MatthewKnightArenaopeneditsdoorsonJan.13,2011,toasold-outcrowdof12,364astheOregonmen’sbasketballchristenedthenewpalacewitha68-62victoryoverUSC.Thebuilding,namedafterthelatesonofNIKECo-FounderPhilKnight,islocatedontheeastsideofUO’scampus.

OfficialsbrokegroundonMatthewKnightArenaonFeb.7,2009,asthe420,000square-footmasterpiecewasconstructedinlessthantwoyears.MattArenawaserectedtoreplacelegendaryMcArthurCourt,whichopenedonJanuary14,1927.Knownasoneofthetoughestvenuesinthecountryforopponents,MacCourtwasthesecond-oldeston-campusarenastillinusebeforeMatthewKnightArenaopeneditsdoors.

Alsoknownas“ThePit,”SportingNewsnameditthe“thebestgyminAmerica”assportswriterandarenaresearcherBillKintnerplacedMacCourthistopfiveofcollegebasketballarenasinAmericaforitshistory,character,andatmosphere.

MacCourtwasapassionincubator.Thegeometryoftheplacenotonlyshovedfansclosetoamplifytheintensityofemotion,itputfansontopoftheaction,makingthemfeelliketheywereanintegralpartoftheplayonthefloor,andabletoushertheirDuckstovictorythroughtheforceoftheirenergyandcollectivewill.Fansdidn’tjustgotoMacCourttowatchagame;fanswenttoliveit.

TorecreatethesamepassionandexperienceatMatthewKnightArena,thenewvenuewasfashionedwiththesamecloseconnectiontothestudent-athletesandtheaction;bymakingthefansfeelliketheyareanintegralpartofthegame.MatthewKnightArenaisamonumenttoallOregonfansandtheircommonloveforOregon,andtheexcitingenergythathappenswhenalljointogethertocheerfortheDucks.

Thereareseveralareasthroughoutthearena,includingtheclubareas,teamspacesandconcessionsthattietheOregonbrandtogether.ThreemajordisplaysontheConcoursearetheAnthemtotheFan,theHeroGraphicsandtheShroudWall.Eachtellsdifferentpartsofthestory.TheShroudWallisprimarilyaboutheritage,energyandprogression.

HeroGraphicscelebrateOregon’sgreatstudent-athletesandgreatmo-ments--pastandpresent.TheAnthemtotheFanisaboutcommonde-votion.Together,theyexpressthesenseofconnectionandownership,theuniqueandproudheritage,thewildpassion,andtheunrelentingquestformorechampionshipstocome.ThisLandoftheTallFirsisaspecialplace,inhabitedbypeoplewhocaremoredeeplyaboutateamthatfightsevenharder.

TheuniquefloordesignatMatthewKnightArenaisanodtotheTallFirs,thenicknameofOregon’sNationalChampionshipbasketballsquadin1939.TheoneofitskindperspectiveislookingupfromaclearingintheforestthatcelebratesOregon’sbeautifulenvironment.

KilkennyFloorisahomagetothefamilyofformerathleticsdirectorPatKilkenny.ThreelogosrepresentHeppner,Ore.,withtheMorrowCountyCourthouse;aninterlockingUOwiththreeshamrocks;andthebeach/sunsetofSanDiego.TheseimageshonorthehometownoftheKilken-ny’s,theIrishprideandlogoofOregonduringPat’seraasastudent,andPat’sloveofSanDiegowherehecallshometoday.

Matthew Knight Arena rivals Hass Pavilion for the tightest, steepestseatingbowlinthePac-12,andthereareunobstructedsightlinestothetotalplayingsurfaceforallseats.ThelowerbowlofMattArenaisclosertothefloorandsteeperthanMacCourt.TheWestEndzoneseatingisassteepascodeallows–over36degrees.

The center hung KnightVision boards are the largest (12’8” high and18’11” high) and highest resolution (6mm) video boards on a score-board in an NCAA arena. Only the recently opened Amway Center(NBAOrlandoMagic)haslargerscreensatthisresolution.

Inaddition,MattArenahasfourhustleboards locatedatthecornersoftheseatingbowlforgamestatsand270degreeLEDribbonboardslocatedatfrontofupperseatingbowl.

Therearetworegulation-sizebasketballcourtandoneregulation-sizevolleyballpracticecourts.

Onthefloorlevel,MattArenahasspaciouson-siteathletictrainingandweighttrainingfacilitiesaswellasanutritionbar.

The men’s basketball, women’s basketball and volleyball team lockerroomsandloungesalsohavestateofthearttechnologyforgamedays,practicesandstudyingpurposes.
