ABOUT THE WARRIORS

The Corban Warriors (8-13, 4-8 CCC) currently sit seventh in the conference. Their last weekend out, they gained one win against Northwest Christian and fell short in their non-conference match-up against New Hope. The Warriors were on a five game losing streak until their win against Evergreen.

THE LAST TIME THEY MET...Jan. 5, 2013Salem, Ore. – The No. 2 Eastern Oregon men’s basketball team (19-1, 7-1 CCC) came away with a, 78-66 win over Corban University (6-9, 2-5 CCC) in tonight’s Cascade Collegiate Conference match up. Trent Roos and Jason Mumm led the Mountaineers in scoring. Roos, finished with 15 points and 6 rebounds and Mumm, finished with 15 points and 7 rebounds. Anthony Brown and Cody Thurmond scored 12 and 10 points respectively. Corbans Andrew Evans led all scorers as he finished with 25 points and 6 assists. Marcus Butler added 9 points and 4 rebounds. In the first half Eastern jumped out to an early lead after baskets by Mumm and Thurmond, along with back to back threes by Brown pushed the Mountaineers lead to 11 with 12:50 left to play in the half. Corban came back to cut Easterns’ led to 6 before EOU would go on another run gaining their largest lead of the game 37-19. With just 3:39 left in the half, turn-overs by the Mountaineers let the Warriors back into the game as they cut the led to just 10, sending EOU into the half up, 41-31. Eastern shot 48% (15-of-31) from the field in the first half and 53% (7-of-13) from behind the arc, as Corban shot 42% (12-of-28) from the field and 44% (4-of-9) from the three point line. Eastern came out of the locker room cold in the second half as Corban cut the Mountaineers lead to just one after back to back jump shots by Butler with 12:48 left to play. EOU then battled back to gain a 7 point lead with 8:18 left on the clock. The Warriors closed the gap to 2, 60-58 but baskets by Roos and Brown allowed EOU to regain control and hold on to the lead for the remainder of the game. EOU finished the game shooting 48% (28-of-58) from the field and 46% (12-of-26) from downtown. Corban shot 47% (25-of-53) from the field and 42% (8-of-19) from behind the arc. Eastern will travel to The College of Idaho next Friday, game time is set for 7:30 pm MT. Live

ABOUT THE CONFERENCEThanks to a trio of upsets on Saturday night, top-ranked Eastern Oregon was able to extend their lead atop the conference standings but with three full weeks left to play, there is still a lot of basketball left to play.This week, Northwest and Warner Pacific will meet up in Portland with second-place po-tentially on the line. In addition to taking on WPC, the Eagles will play at Concordia as well with Evergreen also touring Portland to take on WPC and CU.Corban and Northwest Christian make the trek east to take on Eastern Oregon and College

ABOUT THE BEACONS

The Northwest Christian Beacons (8-16, 2-10 CCC) fell short last weekend against Corban University. Their win against Evergreen January 18th broke their ten game losing streak and also bumped them ahead of the Geoducks in the CCC rankings. They are now on a two game losing streak and will be looking for another conference win this weekend.

QUICK LOOK AT THE ROSTEREastern Oregon returns nine players from last year’s squad which went 19-11 overall and 11-7 in conference play. Returners include: seniors Cody Thurmond, Jason Mumm, John Buhler, Trent Roos, Robert Barrington and Anthony Brown. The lone returning junior is: Kyllian Wood. Returning red shirt fresh-man are Kalvin Johanson and Derek Maloney. EOU has eight newcomers, adding five trans-fers and three prep standouts. Transfers in-clude: Michael Crane (Walla Walla CC), Tony Eackles (Alcorn State), Craig Tucker (Western Wyoming), Zach Anderson (Lindfield Col-lege) and JD Esters (Humboldt State). The freshmen class includes: Michael Hillman (Post Falls, ID.), Stuart Bartoldus (Newport, Ore), Tyler Dungannon (Phoenix, Ore).

THE LAST TIME OUT ...NO. 1 EASTERN WINS AT EVERGREEN 82-67..January 26, 2013Olympia, Wash. The No.1 ranked Eastern Oregon Mountain-eers defeated the Evergreen State College Geoducks, 82-67, in a Cascade Collegiate Conference matchup at CRC Gymnasium Saturday night.

Senior Cody Thurmond led the Mountaineers (24-1, 12-1 CCC) with 17 points and 2 rebounds. Senior Trent Roos finished with 13 points and 2 rebounds, while Junior transfer Michael Crane added 10 points and 9 rebounds.

Evergreen (2-19, 1-12 CCC) was led by Frankie Johnson with 21 points and 3 rebounds. Cody Peters added 13 points and 5 rebounds, teammate Marc Taylor finished with 12 points 6 rebounds.

Eastern jumped out to an early eight point lead in the first four minutes 13-5, but Evergreen would battle right back and go on an

8-0 run of their own to tie the game at 13 with 14:52 left to play in the half. Zach Anderson would knock down his second three pointer of the game gave to give Eastern a 20-13 point lead mid-way through the half. Evergreen continued to hang around before EOU went on a 9-0 run just before the half to gain their largest lead, 13, heading into the locker room up, 39-26.

EOU came out in the second half and continued to hold on to their double-digit lead. The Mountaineers extended their lead by as much as 18, 63-45, with 9:37 left to play. Evergreen surged back and cut the Mountaineers lead to single digits with just over three minutes to play. Eastern answered with 6-0 run of their own, put-ting the game out of reach and capturing their tenth win in a row.

Eastern finished shooting 26-of-57 (45%) from the field and 11-of-23 (47%) from downtown. Evergreen shot 26-of-71 (36%) from the field and 9-of-24 (37%) from behind the arc.

NO. 1 EOU WINS NAIA GAME OF THE WEEK..January 25, 2013 Kirkland, Wash. – In a jam packed gym and a tumultuous crowd, the No.1 ranked Eastern Oregon men’s basketball team defeated No.15 Northwest University in the NAIA basketball game of the week, 75-71. The win marks the first time in school history that an EOU team has won in a NAIA game of the week. Before tonight’s game EOU athletic teams were 0-4, (Men’s basketball 0-2, Football 0-2) in NAIA games of the week.

Craig Tucker led the Mountaineers (23-1, 11-1 CCC) with 12 points and 4 rebounds. Cody Thurmond added 11 points, 3 rebound and 3 assists while Michael Crane and Jason Mumm chipped in with 10 points respectively. Northwest (19-5, 9-3 CCC) Ryan Mcintosh led all scorers with 26 points and 8 rebounds. Michael Greene contributed with 15 points and 7 rebounds.

In the first half Northwest would take a seven point lead 18-11, their largest lead of the game, with 13:28 left to play in the half. The Mountaineers came back and took the lead by two with 5:54 on the clock. EOU eventually extended their lead to 7 before Northwest went on a 8-0 run and took a one point lead into half time, 37-38. EOU shot 17-of-37 (45%) from the field and just 2-of-10 (20%) from behind the three-point line in the first half. NU shot 15-of-28 (53%) from the field and 4-of-9 (44%) from behind the arc. In the second half the teams traded baskets early on, with 6 ties occurring in the first seven minutes of play. Midway through the half the Mountaineers would take a seven point lead, 65-58, after a three pointer by Tucker. With five minutes left, EOU led by 8 and seemed to be in control but NU wouldn’t go away and used their pressuring defense to cause several turnovers and cut EOUs’ lead to just two, 73-71, with 2:11 to play. Mumm answered with the last basket of the game with 18 seconds on the clock to seal the deal for the Mountaineers.
