ABOUT THE EAGLES

The Northwest University Eagles (19-4, 9-2 CCC) are currently at No. 3 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference and No. 15 in the Coaches’ Poll this week. Last weekend they swept Corban and Northwest Christian which contributed to their five game win streak. The last two weeks their players, Ryan McIntosh and Michael Greene, have been chosen as the Red Lion Player of the Week.

THE LAST TIME THEY MET...December 21, 2012La Grande, Ore. - The Eastern Oregon men’s basketball team defeated Evergreen tonight, 77-60, in a Cascade Collegiate Conference matchup at Quinn Coliseum.

Senior Jason Mumm led Eastern (16-1, 4-1 CCC) with 15 points shooting 6-of-9 from the field. Trent Roos ended the game with 13 points and 3 assist.

Evergreen (2-10, 1-3 CCC) was led by Cody Peters with 19 points and 5 rebounds. Elzie Dickens and Frankie Johnson added 12 and 10 points respectively.

Eastern would jump out to 14 point lead, 28-14, with 7:47 left in the first half. Evergreen closed the gap to 9 just before the half, sending EOU to the locker room up, 36-27.

The Mountaineers shot 44% (15-of-34) from the field in the first half, while the Geoducks shot 32% (10-of-31).

In the second half Eastern would extend their lead to as much as 21. Evergreen went on a run and cut the lead to 14 midway through the half. EOU would hold their composure and seal the victory, 77-60.

EOU finished the game shooting 47% (28-of-59) from the field and 35% (7-of-20) from the three point line. Evergreen shot 37% (22-of-59) from the field and 31% (7-of-22) from behind the arc.The Mountaineers bench outscored the Geoducks 37-20. Both teams tied on the rebound battle 37 a piece.

EOU will play at home again tomorrow against Northwest University game time is set for 7:30 p.m. live stats and video will be available at EOUsports.com Eastern returns home after three straight road games. The Mountaineers host No. 12 Warner Pacific College next Friday in Quinn Coliseum. It is breast cancer awareness weekend in Quinn Coliseum and the first 200 fans will receive a free “Wear Pink, Get Aware” shirt. All fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCERanked the top team in the nation for the third straight week, the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers will face a tough test come Friday as they travel to Washington to take on 15th-ranked Northwest in a pivotal CCC contest.College of Idaho will also be traveling to Washington, taking on Evergreen on Friday night before trav-eling to Northwest on Saturday. Warner Pacific should have two good challenges at Southern Oregon and Oregon Tech, which Concordia also traveling south.The final matchup features Northwest Christian traveling to Corban on Friday night.

ABOUT THE GEODUCKS

The Evergreen State College Geoducks (2-17, 1-10 CCC) currently stand last in the Cascade Collegeiate Conference. In their last weekend out, Northwest Christian avenged their loss against Evergreen (73-62) and Corban picked up another win (76-70). The Geoducks are currently on an eight game losing streak, only gaining one conference win against Northwest Christian earlier this season.

QUICK LOOK AT THE ROSTEREastern Oregon returns nine players from last year’s squad which went 19-11 overall and 11-7 in conference play. Returners include: seniors Cody Thurmond, Jason Mumm, John Buhler, Trent Roos, Rob-ert Barrington and Anthony Brown. The lone returning junior is: Kyllian Wood. Returning red shirt freshman are Kalvin Johanson and Derek Maloney. EOU has eight newcomers, adding five transfers and three prep standouts. Transfers include: Michael Crane (Walla Walla CC), Tony Eackles (Alcorn State), Craig Tucker (Western Wyoming), Zach Anderson (Lindfield College) and JD Esters (Hum-boldt State). The freshmen class includes: Michael Hillman (Post Falls, ID.), Stuart Bartoldus (Newport, Ore), Tyler Dungan-non (Phoenix, Ore).

THE LAST TIME OUT ...MEN GAIN REVENGE ON SOUTHERN..January 19, 2013La Grande Ore. – The No. 1 ranked Eastern Oregon men’s basketball team defeated Southern Oregon tonight in a Cascade Collegiate Conference matchup, 75-61. EOU’s (22-1, 10-1 CCC) Anthony Brown recorded a double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds in tonight’s contest while teammate Trent Roos chipped in with 16 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists. Southern Oregon (15-7, 7-4 CCC) was led by Taylor Roos with 16 points and 2 rebounds. Jeff Bush contributed with 13 points and 7 rebounds. Eastern was able to get revenge on the lone team to defeat them this season in a physical game that saw three technical fouls in the first half.

Southern led for the majority of the first half taking a 6 point lead with under five minutes to play in the half. The Mountaineers relied heavily on their defense and were able to close the gap and take a 4 point lead going into the half, 34-30. In the second half Eastern led by 8 points, 53-45, at the ten min-ute mark but the Raiders would make a small run of their own and cut the lead to just five with 4:43 left to play. On the ensuing possession Junior transfer JD Esters would knock down a three pointer that would help the Mountaineers take control in the final minutes to defeat Southern , 75-61. The Mountaineers shot 23-of-60 (33% ) from the field for the game and 38% (10-of-26) from behind the arc. The Raiders shot 21-of-50 (42%) from the field and just 6-of-19 (31%) from be-hind arc.

MOUNTAINEERS SWEEP OREGON TECH..January 18, 2013La Grande, Ore. – The No. 1 ranked Eastern Oregon men’s bas-ketball team (21-1, 9-1 CCC) defeated Oregon Tech (11-11, 2-8 CCC) tonight in a Cascade Collegiate Conference match-up at Quinn Coliseum 88-75. Senior Jason Mumm led all scorers with 17 points and 4 re-bounds. Senior Anthony Brown chipped in 14 points and 4 rebounds. OIT was led by David Clarke with 16 points and 4 rebounds, teammate Dani Lopez ended the game with 10 points and 8 rebounds. . Early on the Mountaineers jumped out to an early lead holding the Owls to 6 points in the first five minutes while posting 19 points on the scoreboard. Midway through the half the Moun-taineers held a 23-11 lead and would go into the locker room up 43-33.

EOU shot 16-of-36 (44%) from the field in the first half and 5-of-15 (33% ) from behind the arc. Oregon Tech would shoot 13-of-32 (40%) from the field and 5-of-15 (33%) from behind the arc. In the second half the Mountaineers would come out and go on a 13-0 run and to take their largest lead of the game, 23, led by Mumm’s 7 point spurt. The Owls would go on a run of their own to stop the bleeding and cut the lead down to 13 with 11:39 on the clock. For the remainder of the half the Mountaineers would maintain their double digit lead to sweep the Owls for the first time in 33 years. EOU shot 34-of- 72 (47%) from the field and 8-of-25 from the three. OIT ended the game shooting 28-of-65(43%) from the field and 10-of-28 (35%) from behind the arc. The Mountaineers won the rebound battle grabbing 43 rebounds compared to OIT’s 37 and outscored OIT in points in the paint, 42-26.
