President’s Message Wynne Osborne "It is an ill wind which blows NO good" The ill wind, aka the eclipse, blew in some bad
news and our quilt show has been cancelled. But the GOOD is the great response from members to make the best of our situation. Here are some HUGE THANK YOUs: Sue Woolley and Andrea Carpenter finished 5 quilts and Sue joined the Mt. Meadows Guild in order to show them on August 5 and perhaps sell them. These were goodies from the Community Quilts closet. The one I saw was beautiful. Here's to Sue and Andrea. And then Sue investigated a sales table at the Mt. Meadows Show. The Guild will pay for a table and Community Quilts and Guild members will staff a table of re-‐sale items, again from the Community Quilts closet. Fabric, fat quarters as well as 5" squares, tools and other donations will be for sale. All of the profit will go to the Guild. Another BIG thank you to Sue and also to Jan Durham who have organized the volunteers and the table. Please support the Mt. Meadows quilt show on August 5th to show our support. Gwen Brock has permission from the Assistance League of Bend to show our quilt at their August meeting. Patti Stewart will help with ticket sales. Many thanks. Louise, our intrepid Boutique chair, is working on a Boutique Day with one of the quilt shops. Several members have called or emailed me with additional ideas that the Board will consider at our August meeting.
We are stronger together! I look forward to learning the winner of the Raffle Quilt and the winners of the Challenge Quilt at our September meeting. Enjoy the end of summer!
Hospitality Kim McCray and Kris Lang Thanks for the great refreshments that everyone brought in July. No meeting in August, no one bringing snacks! Have a fun month we'll see everyone in September!

Guild Library Mary Ella Strelchun Returning from our very hot Sequoia camping experience last week I stopped off at the quilt shop in Merrill, Oregon, just south of Klamath Falls. Several of their books featured letters and quilt blocks that represented them. Most of the quilt blocks were paper pieced and six inches in size. Our library has Hobo Quilts by Debra G.
Henninger. 55+ Original Blocks Based on the Secret Language of Riding the Rails. Other similar books are: The Civil War Love Letter Quilt by Rosemary Youngs is a history book, quilting guide, and touching tale of the love shared by Civil War soldiers, their sweethearts and families. This new guide showcases 121 different paper pieced block patterns with the actual letter that inspired them. The collection includes love letters from: President Rutherford B. Hayes to his family, Newton Scott to his childhood friend, whom he married upon returning from the war. David Winn, a soldier who ultimately gave his life for his country. The Farmer's Wife 1930s Sampler Quilt by Laurie Aaron Hird. Featuring real-‐life letters from The Farmer's Wife magazine, commemorates the strength and hope of the farm women of the Great Depression. The 99-‐block queen-‐size sampler quilt inspired by these letters uses reproduction 1930s fabrics. For each block, instructions are provided for template piecing, and-‐-‐where applicable-‐-‐rotary cutting, so readers can piece the blocks based on their preferred technique. Amish Circle Quilt by Rosemary Youngs The Amish women of the Pennsylvania Dutch Country have been creating exquisite quilted masterpieces since the 1800s. Amish quilts represent personal expression, craftsmanship, and frugality, and are the most desired in the world. This book is the first to take quilters inside the Amish tradition of the Circle letter. From each letter, a quilt block is created to represent a significant event in the life of the quilter; these letters and blocks are passed around a circle of 11 friends, and once 121

blocks have been created, they are joined together to create a beautiful work of art that tells the story of family and friends -‐ a circle quilt.

With Many Thanks to Our Sponsoring Shops! Stitchin’ Post 311 W. Cascade, Sisters 541-‐549-‐6061 www.stitchinpost.com Hi Everyone, As you must realize, I am writing this a week after quilt show to meet the newsletter deadline, so I am just now relaxing after a very fun week of workshops and events, and the very successful quilt show. I was concerned about the heat that day, but it wasn’t that bad. People paced themselves and wore hats and drank lots of water. The quilts were just stunning, and I have to give a big shout out for my committee of ten who put together the plan where each quilt will be hung and get them in the correct bags to be hung. We did it in three half-‐days and then worked on special exhibits. Marion Shimoda and Jan Tetzlaff did an amazing job of categorizing quilts as they arrived and then we went to work. After 43 years, quilt
show is still the highlight of my year and I am still in awe watching the quilts come out of bags and getting hung on buildings. Guess what? We actually had more fabric arriving a couple of days ago, an order of wonderful Christmas fabric from Moda. And if you have not seen the new Holiday Homies line designed by Tula Pink-‐-‐come see it. It has a very northwest feeling with the colors and content. Two of our super employees got table runners made before the show (red color way and green color way) and we have kits. Then Kayley designed a wonderful improv Christmas tree and we have a free pattern for that. This is really the time to get started on holiday decorations and gifts. Watch for my improv pieced and stuffed tree one-‐day class..it was very popular last year, and we will be repeating it. Kayley will have the class schedule ready for you very soon. See you soon! Jean

Greetings from BJ's! We survived Quilt Show week (phew!) and are getting the shop tidied up and restocked. We've got lots of yummies coming in and hope to tempt you soon. We just received some fun new juvenile fabrics, just in time for this fall's baby boom. If you're looking for blenders, we have a great selection of "go-‐withs" including lots of contemporary "low volume" prints and solids. If you're a Lori Holt fan and plan to participate in her "Bee Happy" sew along, we've got the whole line but it is buzzing out the door... Our fall class schedule is online, and you can now sign up for classes on our website (if you're like me and love to shop in your jammies). Lavelle Wallace is teaching her great "Ultimate Travel Bag" class again, as well as several fun QuiltSmart quilt patterns. Patty Bowers has several great Quilter's Lumberyard classes planned, and watch the website for some fun classes with Bevalee Runner as well. Hope to see you all soon! Kathy
