BPP UNIVERSITY

T his programme will be awarded as a Master's in Clinical Dentistry (MClinDent). As clinically-based qualifications, BPP's courses are designed to equip you with real-life practice experience, so that students are fully prepared for a flourishing professional career.

The six programmes are specifically designed for practising dental professionals. Part-time students attend intensive blocks of seminars and practical workshops at BPP University locations and perform the clinical component of their programme in their own practices.

08SYLLABUS OVERVIEWUNIT 1:AETIOLOGY AND DIAGNOSIS OF DISEASE OF THE PULP

This module explains the causes and aetiology of pulpal disease

and how they may be treated or prevented. It provides knowledge of

the morphology of teeth including the size, shape and course of the

pulp chamber and canals, developing an awareness of anatomical

variations. Students will also be able diagnose pulpal disease, treat

endodontology emergencies and advise patients of post-operative

sequelae.

300 HOURS/20 CREDITS

UNIT 3:BIOMECHANICS OF OSSEOINTEGRATION

When root canal treatment is not a viable or cost-effective

treatment option this module gives an overview of implants

and the theory of osseointegration with guidance on patient

selection, diagnosis, treatment planning, and restorative

protocols.

300 HOURS/20 CREDITS

UNIT 4:ENDODONTOLOGY RETREATMENT AND NAVIGATING THE COMPLEX TOOTH CANAL ANATOMY

This module develops competency in retreatment of failed root canal

treatment as a result of under-preparation, inadequate obturation

and iatrogenic perforation of the canal system. Included is the

management of facial trauma and surgical endodontology with risk

assessment and determination of long-term prognosis.

150 HOURS/15 CREDITS

UNIT 2:MANAGEMENT OF THE COMPROMISED DENTAL PULP

This module teaches students to develop a comprehensive, properly

sequenced treatment plan and alternative plans based on all

diagnostic data. It introduces the latest methods of managing disease

of the pulp and technologies of root canal preparation, debridement

and obturation underpinned by evidence-based treatment planning.

It also covers restorative protocols and their influence on current

thinking with regard the long-term prognosis of the root treated tooth.

300 HOURS/20 CREDITS

UNIT 5:OCCLUSION

This module addresses clinical aspects of occlusal treatment:

diagnosis and treatment protocol, fabrication of bite splints,

treatment of temporomandibular disorders, the creation of

functional restorations, occlusal adjustment, and treatment of

malocclusion.

PROFESSOR JAMES PRITCHARDBDS, MSC, LDSRCS(ENG), MFGDP(UK), FIADFE(USA), AFHEA(UK)

Professor Prichard is a renowned teacher in endodontics, delivering hands-on courses,

lectures and seminars throughout the UK and overseas. Before joining BPP, James held

the posts of Associate Clinical Teacher, Clinical Teaching Fellow and Clinical Supervisor

in Endodontics on the Masters Programme at The University of Warwick. James has

published in scientific journals including the International Endodontic Journal, The British

Dental Journal and Endodontic Practice. He has been awarded a Fellowship from the

International Academy of Dental Facial Esthetics in New York and has recently gained

his Associate Fellowship from the Higher Education Authority as part of a post-graduate

teaching certificate in professional education.

DR JUSTIN DINLEYBDS, MSC(ENDO), DIP IMPDENT, RCS(ENG), DPDS, MFGDP

Justin is a Senior Lecturer in Endodontics on the MClinDent at BPP University, and is a key

opinion leader in the field of regenerative technologies for biotechnologies.

When he is not lecturing, Justin works in private practice, currently Duffield

Road Dental Care, Derby, taking on referrals from local dentists, and covers all

aspects of endodontics and orofacial pain. Justin has over six years endodontic

referral experience using state of the art microscopy and the latest techniques

and developments.

UNIT 6:ADVANCED CLINICAL PRACTICE

Students present and treat a minimum of ten surgical cases, four

of which are under supervision and appraised at regional clinic.

Students also contribute to seminars and present interesting

case reports they treated or intend to treat under supervision

or independently. The cases build up a clinical portfolio that is

marked for evidence of successful completion of the module.

UNIT 7:EVIDENCE-BASED DENTISTRY: UNDERSTANDING RESEARCH

Introduces statistics, measurement, research design, exploring

their specific application in dental research and evaluation of

different treatment modalities.

METHODS OF STUDY

PART-TIME DISTANCE LEARNING

The majority of the learning resources will be online. The

programme will combine interactive distance learning, learncasts,

live learning and print to create an integrated learning programme,

using the best of new media and technology.

RESIDENTIAL

Activities on this programme will be supplemented by attendance

at three residential courses to complete the hands-on portion of

the course.

RESOURCES

Students will have access to BPP University's online library.

METHODS OF ASSESSMENT

Assessments take the form of short answer questions, structured

essays, clinical case reports and treatment planning exercises.

Clinical details and photographic evidence of cases treated in

practice form the basis of case reports.

Structured essays and short answer questions are posted online

and students normally have two weeks to complete and submit.

Single best answer and reflective questions are used throughout

the units as a form of self-assessment.

13LEARNCAST* / RECORDED LECTURES

Each learncast or lecture is typically 1-2 hours long with

assessments to be completed during the unit. Learncasts (live-

distance learning) and recorded lectures may be taken online. In all

cases, the examination is required to complete the unit.

Each lecture hour is assigned a one hour credit and its associated

coursework and assessment is assigned a 0.5 hour credit.

A learncast is a type of web conference, with an online

seminar. The direction of the presentation is primarily led by

the presenter. However, audience participation is integral and

indeed necessary for a more useful and interesting experience.

A learncast is live and interactive – with the ability to give

receive and discuss information. A learncast is typically 1-2

hours long.

CLINICAL CASE REPORTS

Photographic documentation and written descriptions of clinical

cases will be submitted online in a standard pre-formatted

template file for assessment purposes.

The images will include before, after and significant steps in

the treatment. Detailed guidelines for case presentation and

photography will be provided.

Each case is examined anonymously by a minimum of 2

instructors (and a third, in case of disagreement), marked and

returned to the participant with an evaluation and comments.

READINGS

The appraisal of current research will be an important part of the

course/programme.

Required and suggested reading take the form of peer reviewed

articles, chapters of textbooks or other published sources.

Articles are accessed online via BPP University Library. Each

article is assigned a 1 credit value (equivalent to 1-3 hours).

RESEARCH PROJECT / DISSERTATION

A dissertation is a detailed piece of writing designed to further

develop your knowledge and provides an opportunity to draw on

research skills developed across the course.

At a Master's level, the dissertation requires independent

thinking and an ability to critique one's own work and that of

others. A dissertation tutor will provide support in developing

the dissertation and is responsible for assessing and monitoring

students’ progress throughout the unit.

This course is made up of seven taught units and one project unit – a total of eight units. The number of credits required for the

award of MClinDent is 180 credits.

• Undergraduate qualification in dentistry, and

• Completion of at least one year in clinical practice

• Current General Dental Council practising certificate

Prior to commencing clinical placement

Terms and conditions for course fees

An access and registration fee of £6,000 (includes VAT) is payable to Healthcare Learning Ltd upon registration. This fee is refundable in

the event that the student application is not approved (minus a charge of £500 for administration and the online learning library).

A student, upon accepting a place on the course, will become liable immediately for the full fees due. On accepting a place, Healthcare

Learning will provide access to online learning to aid preparation for the course and to support continuous professional

development (CPD).

Students are offered payment options as set out in the fees schedule. These options may be provided by an independent financial

provider. If the payment schedule has been agreed with an independent financial provider, the student will be subject to the Terms and

Conditions of that company. Once a payment plan has been agreed, this cannot be changed by the student, except for in extenuating

circumstances that are agreed with Healthcare Learning Ltd in writing. Healthcare Learning Ltd reserves the right to charge an

administration fee to alter the payment schedule.

Limited Places

Course places are limited in number and cannot be guaranteed until the application is approved AND payment of course fees is received

in full by Healthcare Learning Ltd. Information and dates maybe subject to change and revision at any time.

Sponsored Students

Where a student provides a valid sponsor letter at application from an external corporate body agreeing to pay tuition fees, the invoice

will be sent directly to the sponsoring organisation and payment of the invoice will be due immediately. A student who is sponsored by a

friend or relative will be regarded as responsible for their own fees.

In the event of non-payment of part or all fees by the sponsoring organisation, the outstanding amount will be invoiced to the student

and will be payable within 14 days.
