Primera Lectura: Exodo 32: 7-11, 13-14 En aquellos días, dijo el Señor a Moisés: "Anda, baja del monte, porque tu pueblo, el que sacaste de Egipto, se ha pervertido. No tardaron en desviarse del camino que yo les había señalado. Se han hecho un becerro de metal, se han postrado ante él y le han ofrecido sacrificios y le han dicho: 'Éste es tu Dios, Israel; es el que te sacó de Egipto' ". El Señor le dijo también a Moisés: "Veo que éste es un pueblo de cabeza dura. Deja que mi ira se encienda contra ellos hasta consumirlos. De ti, en cambio, haré un gran pueblo". Moisés trató de aplacar al Señor, su Dios, diciéndole: "¿Por qué ha de encenderse tu ira, Señor, contra este pueblo que tú sacaste de Egipto con gran poder y vigorosa mano? Acuérdate de Abraham, de Isaac y de Jacob, siervos tuyos, a quienes juraste por ti mismo, diciendo: 'Multiplicaré su descendencia como las estrellas del cielo y les daré en posesión perpe-tua toda la tierra que les he prometido' ". Segunda Lectura: 1 Timothy 1: 12-17 Querido hermano: Doy gracias a aquel que me ha fortalecido, a nuestro Señor Jesucristo, por haberme considerado digno de confianza al ponerme a su servicio, a mí, que antes fui blasfemo y perseguí a la Iglesia con violencia; pero Dios tuvo misericor-dia de mí, porque en mi incredulidad obré por ignorancia y la gracia de nuestro Señor se desbordó sobre mí al darme la fe y el amor que provienen de Cristo Jesús. Puedes fiarte de lo que voy a decirte y aceptarlo sin reservas: que Cristo Jesús vino a este mundo a salvar a los pecadores, de los cuales yo soy el primero. Evangelio: Lucas 14: 25-33 En aquel tiempo, se acercaban a Jesús los publicanos y los pecadores a escucharlo; por lo cual los fariseos y los escribas mur-muraban entre sí: "Éste recibe a los pecadores y come con ellos". Jesús les dijo entonces esta parábola: "¿Quién de ustedes, si tiene cien ovejas y se le pierde una, no deja las noventa y nueve en el campo y va en busca de la que se le perdió hasta encon-trarla? Y una vez que la encuentra, la carga sobre sus hombros, lleno de alegría, y al llegar a su casa, reúne a los amigos y veci-nos y les dice: 'Alégrense conmigo, porque ya encontré la oveja que se me había perdido'. Yo les aseguro que también en el cielo habrá más alegría por un pecador que se arrepiente, que por noventa y nueve justos, que no necesitan arrepentirse. ¿Y qué mujer hay, que si tiene diez monedas de plata y pierde una, no enciende luego una lámpara y barre la casa y la busca con cuidado hasta encontrarla? Y cuando la encuentra, reúne a sus amigas y vecinas y les dice: 'Alégrense conmigo, porque ya en-contré la moneda que se me había perdido'. Yo les aseguro que así también se alegran los ángeles de Dios por un solo pecador que se arrepiente". También les dijo esta parábola: "Un hombre tenía dos hijos, y el menor de ellos le dijo a su padre: 'Padre, dame la parte que me toca de la herencia'. Y él les repartió los bienes. No muchos días después, el hijo menor, juntando todo lo suyo, se fue a un país lejano y allá derrochó su fortuna, viviendo de una manera disoluta. Después de malgastarlo todo, sobre-vino en aquella región una gran hambre y él empezó a pasar necesidad. Entonces fue a pedirle trabajo a un habitante de aquel país, el cual lo mandó a sus campos a cuidar cerdos. Tenía ganas de hartarse con las bellotas que comían los cerdos, pero no lo dejaban que se las comiera. Se puso entonces a reflexionar y se dijo: '¡Cuántos trabajadores en casa de mi padre tienen pan de sobra, y yo, aquí, me estoy muriendo de hambre! Me levantaré, volveré a mi padre y le diré: Padre, he pecado contra el cielo y contra ti; ya no merezco llamarme hijo tuyo. Recíbeme como a uno de tus trabajadores'. Enseguida se puso en camino hacia la casa de su padre. Estaba todavía lejos, cuando su padre lo vio y se enterneció profundamente. Corrió hacia él, y echándole los brazos al cuello, lo cubrió de besos. El muchacho le dijo: 'Padre, he pecado contra el cielo y contra ti; ya no merezco llamarme hijo tuyo'. Pero el padre les dijo a sus criados: '¡Pronto!, traigan la túnica más rica y vístansela; pónganle un anillo en el dedo y sandalias en los pies; traigan el becerro gordo y mátenlo. Comamos y hagamos una fiesta, porque este hijo mío estaba muerto y ha vuelto a la vida, estaba perdido y lo hemos encontrado'. Y empezó el banquete. El hijo mayor estaba en el campo, y al vol-ver, cuando se acercó a la casa, oyó la música y los cantos. Entonces llamó a uno de los criados y le preguntó qué pasaba. Éste le contestó: 'Tu hermano ha regresado, y tu padre mandó matar el becerro gordo, por haberlo recobrado sano y salvo'. El her-mano mayor se enojó y no quería entrar. Salió entonces el padre y le rogó que entrara; pero él replicó: '¡Hace tanto tiempo que te sirvo, sin desobedecer jamás una orden tuya, y tú no me has dado nunca ni un cabrito para comérmelo con mis amigos! Pero eso sí, viene ese hijo tuyo, que despilfarró tus bienes con malas mujeres, y tú mandas matar el becerro gordo'. El padre repuso: 'Hijo, tú siempre estás conmigo y todo lo mío es tuyo. Let me alone, then, that my wrath may blaze up against them to consume them. Then I will make of you a great nation.” But Moses implored the Lord, his God, saying, “Why, O Lord, should your wrath blaze up against your own people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt with such great power and with so strong a hand? GOD LOOKS AT US WITH MERCY

There have always been people who feel so pure and good, they consider it unworthy to mix with those socie-ty deems as impure. In addition, from the height of their own farness and perfection, they judge everyone with-out fear. They establish barriers that divide society be-tween good and evil, and sit at the gate determining who can pass in one direction or another. There were also people like this in the times of Jesus and he got their attention because he ate with sinners and as a result, became impure; therefore, those who were pure could not deal with Him, much less accept his words, But Jesus is not affected by this; he know he is son of the God of mercy. In his words and actions, Jesus reveals God’s way of being. God’s compassion for eve-ryone is the reason why Jesus is not angry. He tells para-bles such as the lost coin or sheep. The parable of the prodigal son does more than just portray the attitude of any father towards his son. Fathers and mothers feel an immense love for their children, especially for those who are distant. Today God has given us the ministry of mercy. He did it with Paul, who persecuted Christians, was blasphemous and violent as he says in the second reading. But God called, relied, and trusted him with the preaching minis-try; the mystery of God’s ministry which reaches every-one, especially whose who are lost and suffer. God al-ways looks at us with mercy and it is with mercy that we must see our brothers. In this way we will be witnesses of God’s mercy to the world. For Reflection How do I judge others? Do I consider how God would act with them?

REFLEXIÓN DOMINICAL / SUNDAY REFLECTION DIOS NOS MIRA CON MISERICORDIA

Siempre ha habido personas que se sienten tan puras y buenas que no se dignan mezclarse con los que social-mente son impuros. Además, desde la altura de su pro-pia justicia y perfección, juzgan sin miedo a todos. Es-tablecen las barreras que dividen a la sociedad entre buenos y malos y se sitúan a la puerta para determinar quienes son los que pueden pasar en una dirección u otra.

En tiempos de Jesús también había personas así y Je-sús les llamó la atención, porque comía con pecado-res y, por tanto, se volvía impuro él mismo. Entonces, quienes eran puros no podían tener ya trato con él y mucho menos aceptar sus palabras. Pero Jesús no se deja afectar por eso; sabe que es el hijo del Dios de la misericordia. En sus palabras y actos, Jesús revela el modo de ser de Dios; por eso Jesús no se enoja, por-que la compasión de Dios es para todos. Cuenta pará-bolas, como la de la moneda perdida o la oveja perdi-da. La parábola del hijo pródigo no hace más que re-tratar la actitud de cualquier padre de familia hacia su hijo. Los padres y las madres sienten un amor enorme por sus hijos, y especialmente por los más alejados.

Hoy Dios no ha entregado a nosotros el ministerio de la misericordia. Así lo hizo con Pablo, que fue perseguidor de los cristianos, blasfemo y violento, como el mismo dice en la segunda lectura. Pero Dios lo llamó, lo capa-citó, se fio de él y le confió el ministerio de predicar: el misterio de la misericordia de Dios que llega a todos, pero sobre todo a los que están perdidos y a los que sufren. Dios nos mira siempre con misericordia y es así, con misericordia, como debemos nosotros mirar a nuestros hermanos. Así seremos en el mundo testigos de la misericordia de Dios.

Para la reflexión ¿Cómo juzgo a los demás? ¿Pienso cómo actuaría Dios con ellos?

EL ESCORPIÓN: SE SIEMPRE TU MISMO “Que el comportamiento de los otros no te haga cambiar tu esencia”

Un maestro que vio cómo un escorpión se estaba ahogando, decidió sa-carlo del agua, pero cuando lo hizo, el escorpión lo picó. Por la reacción al dolor, el maestro lo soltó, y el animal cayó al agua y de nuevo estaba aho-gándose. El maestro intentó sacarlo otra vez, y otra vez el escorpión lo picó.

Alguien que había observado todo, se acercó al maestro y le dijo: "Perdone, ¡pero usted es ter-co! ¿No entiende que cada vez que intente sacarlo del agua le picará?".

El maestro respondió: "La naturaleza del escorpión es picar, y eso no va a cambiar la mía, que es ayudar".

Y entonces, ayudándose de una hoja, el maestro sacó al insecto del agua y le salvó la vida.

No cambies tu naturaleza si alguien te hace daño; sólo toma precauciones. Algunos persiguen la felicidad; otros la crean.

Celebraciones de Esta Semana / This Week’s Celebrations THE MOST HOLY NAME OF MARY (SEPT. 12): Richard of St. Lau-rence states "there is not such powerful help in any name, nor is

there any other name given to men, after that of Jesus, from which so much salvation is poured forth upon men as from the name of Mary." He continues, "that the devout invocation of this sweet and holy name leads to the acqui-sition of superabundant graces in this life, and a very high degree of glory in the next." After the most sacred name of Jesus, the name of Mary is so rich in every good thing,

that on earth and in heaven there is no other from which devout souls receive so much grace, hope, and sweetness.

SAINT JOHN CHRYSOSTOM (SEPT. 13): St. John Chrysostom was one of the greatest Fathers, Doctors and bishops of the Catholic Church. Recognized to be among the most powerful orators of the ancient world, St. Chrysostom suffered much for his stand as a Catholic bishop, from both secular authorities and, sadly, from some within the Church.

He is the patron saint of preachers.

THE EXALTATION OF THE CROSS (SEPT. 14): The Feast of the Exal-tation of the Holy Cross, celebrated every year on September

14, recalls three historical events: the finding of the True Cross by Saint Helena, the mother of the emperor Con-stantine; the dedication of churches built by Constantine on the site of the Holy Sepulchre and Mount Calvary; and the restoration of the True Cross to Jerusalem by the emperor Heraclius II. But in a deeper sense, the feast also celebrates the Holy Cross as the instrument of our salva-tion. This instrument of torture, designed to degrade the

worst of criminals, became the life-giving tree that reversed Ad-am's Original Sin when he ate from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil in the Garden of Eden.

OUR LADY OF SORROWS (SEPT. 15): In 1913, Pope Pius X fixed the date of this feast on September 15. The title "Our Lady of Sor-

rows" focuses on Mary's intense suffering during the pas-sion and death of Christ. "The Seven Sorrows," the title by which it was celebrated in the 17th century, referred to the seven swords that pierced the Heart of Mary. This feast is dedicated to the spiritual martyrdom of Mary, Mother of God, and her compassion with the sufferings of her Divine Son, Jesus. In her suffering as co-redeemer, she reminds us

of the tremendous evil of sin and shows us the way of true re-pentance.

SAINTS CORNELIUS AND CYPRIAN (SEPT. 16): It seems fairly true to say that almost every possible false doctrine has been proposed at some time or other in the history of the Church. The third century saw the resolution of a problem we scarcely consider—the penance to be done before rec-onciliation with the Church after mortal sin. Men like Cor-nelius and Cyprian were God's instruments in helping the Church find a prudent path between extremes of rigorism and laxity. They are part of the Church's ever-living stream

of tradition, ensuring the continuance of what was begun by Christ, and evaluating new experiences through the wisdom and experience of those who have gone before.

SAINT ROBERT BELLARMINE (SEPT. 17): Robert Bellarmine devot-ed his life to the study of Scripture and Catholic doctrine. His writings help us understand that not only is the content of our faith important, it is Jesus' living person—as revealed by his life, death and resurrection—that is the source of revela-tion. He is the patron saint of catechists and catechumen. In 1930, Pope Pius XI canonized him and the next year declared

him a doctor of the Church.

EL NOMBRE DE MARIA SANTISIMA (SEPT. 12): Ricardo de San Lo-renzo afirma que "no hay tal ayuda poderosa en cualquier nom-bre, ni hay ningún otro nombre dado a los hombres, des-pués del de Jesús, de la que tanta salvación es derramada sobre los hombres como del nombre de María". Él conti-núa, "la invocación devota de este dulce y santo nombre conduce a la adquisición de gracias superabundantes en esta vida, y un alto grado de gloria en la venidera." Des-pués del nombre sagrado de Jesús, el nombre de María es tan rico, que en la tierra y en el cielo no hay ningún otro de las que reciben las almas devotas tanta gracia, esperanza y dulzura.

SAN JUAN CRISÓSTOMO (SEPT. 13): San Juan Crisóstomo fue uno de los más grandes de Padres, Doctores y Obispos de la Iglesia Católica. Reconocido como uno de los oradores más poderosos del mundo antiguo, San Crisóstomo sufrió mucho por su posición como un obispo Católico, tanto de las autoridades seculares y, por desgracia, de algunos den-tro de la Iglesia. Él es el santo patrón de los predicadores.

LA EXALTACIÓN DE LA CRUZ (SEPT. 14): La Fiesta de la Exaltación de la Santa Cruz, que se celebra el 14 de septiembre, recuerda tres acontecimientos históricos: el hallazgo de la Verdadera Cruz por Santa Elena, madre del emperador Constantino; la dedicación de iglesias construidas por Constantino en el sitio del Santo Sepulcro y el Calvario; y la restauración de la Verdadera Cruz a Jerusalén por el emperador Hera-clio II. En un sentido más profundo, la fiesta también se celebra la Santa Cruz como instrumento de nuestra salva-ción. Este instrumento de tortura, diseñado para degra-dar al peor de los criminales, se convirtió en el árbol de vida que invierte el pecado original de Adán cuando comió del árbol del conocimiento del bien y del mal en el Jardín del Edén.

NUESTRA SEÑORA DE LOS DOLORES (SEPT. 15): En 1913, el Papa Pío X fijó la fecha de esta fiesta el 15 de septiembre. El título de "Nuestra Señora de los Dolores" se centra en un intenso sufrimiento de María durante la pasión y muerte de Cristo. "Los Siete Dolores," el título por el cual se celebró en el siglo 17, se refirió a las siete espadas que atravesaron el Corazón de María. El siglo III vio la resolución de un problema que apenas consideramos-la penitencia que se ha hecho antes de la reconciliación con la Iglesia después del pecado mortal. Hombres como Cornelio y Cipriano fueron instrumentos de Dios para ayu-dar a la Iglesia a encontrar un camino prudente entre los extremos de rigorismo y laxitud. Son parte de la corriente de tradición siempre viva en la Iglesia, asegurando la continuación de lo que Cristo comenzó, evaluando nuevas experiencias a través de la sabiduría y experiencia de los que han ido antes.

LOS DERECHOS Y DEBERES

La tradición católica enseña que se puede proteger la dignidad humana y se puede establecer una comunidad sa-ludable sólo si se respetan los derechos humanos y se cum-ple con los deberes. Por lo tanto, toda persona tie-ne un derecho fundamental a la vida y un derecho a todo lo necesario para vivir con decencia. A la par de esos derechos, hay también deberes y responsa-bilidades-de unos a otros, hacia nuestras familias y hacia la sociedad en general. Tenemos que hablar de los derechos del hom-bre. El hombre tiene el derecho a vivir. Él tiene el derecho a la integridad física y los medios necesa-rios para el desarrollo apropiado de la vida, en parti-cular los alimentos, ropa, vivienda, atención médi-ca, el descanso, y, por último, los servicios sociales necesarios. En la sociedad humana, el derecho natu-ral de un hombre da lugar a un deber correspon-diente de otros hombres; el deber, es decir, de reconocer y respetar ese derecho. Por lo tanto, para reclamar los dere-chos de uno y pasar por alto los deberes de uno, o sólo me-dio cumplir con ellos, es como construir una casa con una mano y derribarla con la otra. Los derechos individuales, desvinculados de un conjunto de deberes que les dé un sen-tido profundo, se desquician y dan lugar a que escalen prác-ticamente ilimitada e indiscriminadamente las exigencias. En cuanto al Estado. . . También tiene la obligación de proteger los derechos de todos los ciudadanos, y en particular de los más débiles, los trabajadores, las mujeres y los niños.

RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Catholic tradition teaches that human dignity can be protected and a healthy community can be achieved only if human rights are protected and respon-

sibilities are met. Therefore, every person has a fundamental right to life and a right to those things required for human decency. Corre-sponding to these rights are duties and respon-sibilities--to one another, to our families, and to the larger society.

We must speak of man's rights. Man has the right to live. He has the right to bodily in-tegrity and to the means necessary for the proper development of life, particularly food, clothing, shelter, medical care, rest, and, finally, the necessary social services. In human society one man's natural right gives rise to a corre-

sponding duty in other men; the duty, that is, of recog-nizing and respecting that right. Hence, to claim one's rights and ignore one's duties, or only half fulfill them, is like building a house with one hand and tearing it down with the other. Individual rights, when detached from a framework of duties which grants them their full mean-ing, can run wild, leading to an escalation of demands which is effectively unlimited and indiscriminate. As for the State . . . It has also the duty to protect the rights of all its people, and particularly of its weaker members, the workers, women and children.

Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

When religious people complained that Jesus wel-comed and ate with sinners, Jesus challenged them to change their image of God. Imagine God as a shepherd, abandoning ninety-nine obedient sheep to seek the stupid one who got lost. Imag-

ine God as a distraught woman (could religious men imagine that?), losing something and turning the house upside down to find it. Imagine God as an uncondition-ally forgiving father granting an unworthy son an unde-served feast. Then Jesus added a character whom reli-gious people might imagine, even recognize, all too well. The elder son stayed home; obeyed the father’s will; then exploded with rage and judgment and re-fused to join his brother’s welcome-home feast. This Jubilee Year of Mercy asks, which half of Jesus’ audi-ence do I belong to? How do I imagine God? How can I become like the searching shepherd, the sweeping woman, the forgiving father? How else can I expect a welcome to Jesus’ feast of forgiveness?

“Cuando algunas personas muy cumplidoras de los preceptos religiosos se quejaron que Jesús se juntaba y comía con pecadores, Jesús los desafío a cambiar su imagen de Dios. La imagen de Dios como un pastor que abandona a noventa y nueve ovejas para buscar a la más despistada que se perdió. La imagen de Dios en una mujer preocupada (¿podrían los hombres religiosos ima-ginarlo?) que perdió algo y pone “la casa patas arriba” para encontrarlo. La imagen de Dios como un padre que incondi-cionalmente perdona a un hijo indigno y además celebra su regreso con una fiesta. Luego Jesús añade a otra persona con quien las personas religiosas podrían de alguna manera reconocer y, también todos nosotros. El hijo mayor que es-taba en casa, un hijo obediente a la voluntad de su padre, luego reaccionan con rabia y juicio y, se niegan a unirse a recibir en casa a su hermano. Sin duda que en este Año Jubi-lar de la Misericordia se nos pregunta ¿con cuál audiencia te identificas? ¿Cómo tú te imaginas a Dios? ¿Cómo puedo ha-cerme como el pastor y la mujer preocupados, el padre com-prensivo? ¿De que otra manera puedo esperar una bienveni-da a la fiesta del perdón de Jesús?

CONGRESO REGIONAL ANUAL

La Oficina de Educación Religiosa en la Región Pastoral de San Pedro de la Arquidiócesis de los Ángeles invita a todos los adultos y jóvenes deseosos de enriquecer su fe a participar en el Congre-so Regional anual “¡Bendecidos en la Misericordia de Dios!” que se llevará a cabo el sábado, 1 de octubre 2016, en la St. Joseph High School, Lakewood. Pre-Inscripción sugerida—Visite a su Pas-tor o Director/a de Educación Religiosa para ver el libro de regis-tro. La Liturgia de apertura celebrada por el Obispo Oscar A. Solís será a las 8:30 de la mañana. ANNUAL REGIONAL CONGRESS

The Office of Religious Education in the San Pedro Pastoral Re-gion of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles invites all who want to deepen their faith to attend its Annual Regional Congress “Blessed in God’s Mercy!” scheduled for Saturday, October 1, 2016 at St. Joseph High School, Lakewood. Pre-registration is suggest-ed but not required. Visit your Pastor, or DRE to review the regis-tration book or you can access the registration book and register online by visiting the ORE San Pedro homepage at: http://archla.org/oresppr. On-site registration begins at 7:30am and the Opening Liturgy is celebrated by Bishop Oscar A. Solis at 8:30 am. This year over 60 workshops will be offered in the areas of Faith formation, Spirituality, and practical skills, such as creative lesson planning and personal development.
