" Where Is Your Faith?"
The beloved physician records an amazing story in Luke 8:22-25.
He writes of a time when fearsome storm almost sunk the boat in
which Jesus and his disciples were crossing the Sea of Galilee.
Jesus was sleeping through the storm, but his disciples awoke him,
saying, "Master, Master, we're going to drown!" (v. 24 NIV).
Jesus miraculously rebuked the storm, and also rebuked his
disciples with these words, "Where is your faith?" (v. 25 NIV).
Isn't Jesus' response to the disciples strange? Isn't it a normal thing
to become frightened while on a storm-tossed boat in the middle of
the sea? How could their fear be interpreted as faithlessness?
Faith isn't some unrealistic and irrational confidence that
everything will be okay, at least, not according to the Bible. In
Habbakuk's day, the people were faithless when they refused to
believe that things were going to get really bad due to God's
judgment (Hab. 1:5). The Bible defines faith as man's trust in
what God has said in his word (Rom. 10:17).
Again, why is the disciples' fear tantamount to faithlessness? An
essential thought in answering that question is found a little later in
Luke's gospel. Luke tells of some Pharisees who warn Jesus,
"Leave this place and go somewhere else. Herod wants to kill
you" (13:31 NIV). Jesus responded, "Go tell that fox, 'I will keep
on driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow,
and on the third day I will reach my goal.' In any case, I must
press on today and tomorrow and the next day--for surely no
prophet can die outside Jerusalem!" (vv. 32-33 NIV). Jesus said
that he had no need to fear Herod Antipas who ruled Galilee and
Perea, because Scripture had declared that the prophet like Moses-
-Messiah--would die in Jerusalem (cf. Zech. 12:10-13:1). Thus
Jesus' faith in Scripture's prophesies ruled out fearing Herod.
This is surely what Jesus had in mind when he rebuked the
disciples' fear as faithlessness. They should have understood that
Jesus, as God's Messiah (Luke 9:20), couldn't die by drowning in
the Sea of Galilee. Rather, Scripture foretold his death as a
crucifixion in Jerusalem (cf. Psa. 22:16; Zech. 12:10).
When Paul says that we're to live by faith and not sight (2 Cor.
5:7), he means that we're to do exactly what Jesus rebuked the
disciples for not doing. We're to have an absolute trust in what
God teaches in his word that controls the way that we view the
circumstances we find ourselves in the middle of and that dictates
how we behave in them.
