MAKE SURE YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE FOLLOWING:

1. OBTAINED CONTOUR FILES (SHAPE FILES). IF YOUR SITE IS IN AUCKLAND, INFORMATION CAN BE ACCESSED THROUGH:HTTP://ITADMIN.CREATIVE.AUCKLAND.AC.NZ/PROJECTS/AKCITY/OTHERS.PHPIF YOUR SITE IS ELSEWHERE, SHAPE FILES CAN BE DOWNLOADED FROM LINZ: HTTP://WWW.LINZ.GOVT.NZ/TOPOGRAPHY/TOPO-MAPS/MAP-CHOOSER/INDEX.ASPX

2. EXPORT A 3D DWG (AUTOCAD FORMAT) FILE USING ARCMAP AND ARCSCENE.REFER TO THE ‘MODELLING TOPOGRAPHY’ TUTORIAL FOR DETAILED STEPS:HTTP://VIMEO.COM/14200925

WHY USE REVIT?

1. IF YOU ARE WORKING AT SMALL (RESIDENTIAL) TO MEDIUM (COMMERCIAL) SCALE2. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO WORK USING A BIM PROGRAM (MORE INFORMATION: HTTPS://WIKI.AUCKLAND.AC.NZ/DISPLAY/MEDIACENTRE/REVIT).3. IF YOU MODEL USING REVIT

GETTING STARTED

1_IMPORTING DATA

THE 3D CONTOUR DATA IN THE FORM OF A DWG OBTAINED FROM ARCMAP AND ARCSCENE NEEDS TO BE IMPORTED IN TO REVIT.THIS CAN BE DONE BY LINKING OR IMPORTING.

LINKING ALLOWS ANY CHANGES TO THE DWG WILL BE UPDATED IN REVIT AND IS USEFUL IF THERE ARE MULTIPLE PEOPLE WORKING IN DIFFERENT PROGRAMS ON THE SAME PROJECT. BECAUSE A REFERENCE IS MADE TO THE DWG FILES NEED TO BE ORGANIZED SO THAT REVIT KNOW WHERE TO FIND THE LINKS.IMPORTING CREATES A COPY OF THE DATA INSIDE REVIT SO ANY CHANGES TO THE ORIGINAL DWG WILL NOT EFFECT THE REVIT DATA.

‘LINK CAD’ AND ‘IMPORT CAD’ ARE IN THE INSERT TAB OF THE MAIN RIBBON. THE SAME DIALOGUE BOX APPEARS FOR BOTH LINK AND IMPORT.MAKE SURE ‘CURRENT VIEW ONLY’ IS UNTICKED.ADJUST UNITS WHEN NEEDED. (FOR THE PURPOSE OF THIS TUTORIAL UNITS IS SET TO CENTIMETRES RATHER THAN METRES BECAUSE THE PROPER SIZE OF THE SAMPLE DWG IS INAPPROPRIATE FOR REVIT.)

USEFUL NOTE: TYPING VF WILL AUTOMATICALLY ZOOM THE WORKSPACE TO ALLOW THE DATA TO FULL THE SCREEN

2_3D VIEW

A 3D VIEW IS NEEDED IN ORDER TO MAKE A TOPOSURFACE. TO MAKE A 3D VIEW GO INTO THE VIEW TAB AND UNDER THE ‘3D VIEW’ FLYOUT THERE IS ‘DEFAULT 3D VIEW’.

THE VIEW CAN BE PANNED USING THE MIDDLE MOUSE BUTTON AND ORBITED USING THE SAME WAY BUT WITH SHIFT BUTTON HELD. THIS CAN ALSO BE DONE WITH THE VIEWCUBE ON THE TOP RIGHT CORNER OF THE WORKSPACE.

YOU HAVE NOTICED THERE IS A NEW GROUP IN THE PROJECT BROWSER CALLED 3D VIEWS. DIFFERENT VIEWS CAN BE SAVED.

TOPOSURFACES IS WHAT REVIT USES TO REPRESENT SITE CONDITIONS. TOPOSURFACES HAVE DIFFERENT MATERIAL DEFINITIONS AND HEIGHTS AND SHOW CONTOUR LINES. THEY CAN BE MODIFIED TO SHOW AN EXISTING SITE OR PROPOSED SITE GRADING. YOU CAN CREATE A TOPOSURFACE BY PLACING POINTS INDIVIDUALLY OR BY USING POINTS FORM AN IMPORTED OBJECT OR FILE.

TOPOSURFACE TOOLS ARE FOUND IN THE ‘MASSING AND SITE’ TAB OF THE REVIT RIBBON WITHIN THE MODEL SITE GROUP.

4_TOPOSURFACE

NORMALLY TOPOSURFACES ARE CREATED FROM POINTS THAT YOU PLOT OR PROVIDED FROM CSV FILES. IN THIS CASE WE ALREADY HAVE 3D CONTOUR DATA SO POINTS CAN BE EXTRACTED DIRECTLY FROM THIS.

IN THE ‘CREATE FROM IMPORT’ FLYOUT THERE IS THE OPTION OF ‘SELECT IMPORT INSTANCE’

A NEW DIALOGUE BOX WILL APPEARASKING FOR WHICH LAYERS TO ADDPOINTS. SELECT WHICH LAYERS YOU NEEDAND CLICK OK

5_TERRAIN MADE

TOPOGRAPHY POINTS WILL BE ADDED TO ALL THE CONTOUR LINES.COMPLEX TERRAIN CAN BE SIMPLIFIED WITH SIMPLIFY SURFACE.INDIVIDUAL POINTS CAN BE EDITED IF EXCAVATION IS PLANNED.

THE FINISH CONTOUR MODEL.

VISUAL STYLE CAN BE ADJUSTED AT THE BOTTOM.
