Meridian Community College - Monday Morning

Autumn event kicks off Oct. 28The time is now. Today kicks off MCC’s Fall Fest 2013: Wild, Wild West – Eagle Country.

Organizer Adrian Cross, recruiter, said this week always is a highlight of the fall semester. “It’s a time for students to relax, socialize and support one an-other’s student organizations,” she said.

The campus-life festivities get under way at noon today in Ivy Hall with the Rootin’ Tootin’ Chili Cook-off in which participants are vying for the title of “MCC’s Best Chili Chef.” It’s also Animal Print Day/Think Pink.

On Tuesday, Oct. 29, at high noon, too, the judging of the Door Decorating Contest begins. The winners of this competition will receive lunch for their bunch. Cross said participants are asked to “dress to impress in your best MCC gear.”

Food plus entertainment plus fun will be the order of the day for Wednes-day, Oct. 30, with the FallFest’s Western Day. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Col-lege organizations including Gospel Choir, Medical Lab, Health Information Technology, Ivy League, Phi Beta Lambda, Business and Office Technology; Phi Beta Lambda, Computer Technology; Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA), Dental Hygiene, Surgical Technology and Early Child-hood Education will be selling a myriad of treats – from chili cheese fries to fried Oreos and Twinkies. There will also be food from off-campus vendors including Chick-Fil-A and Mugshots.

Later that evening, beginning at 7 o’clock, the MCC’s Got Talent Show will begin in the McCain Theater.

As the academic week comes to an end, on Thursday, Oct. 31, it’s Hallow-een Costume Day. Cross urged the campus community to “dress in you most spook-tacular Halloween costume.”

PTK to host ‘Commit to Completion’ signing at FallFestStatistics show the surest way for anyone to land a job in their chosen field is to finish college and earn a degree or certifi-cate.

And that’s exactly what MCC students are promising to do - signing a mass pledge to complete their associate degrees or certificates before leaving community college for transfer or to enter the job market. Administrators, faculty and staff have also been asked to sign the pledge, committing themselves to do whatever they can to facilitate completion of student credentials.

On Wednesday, Oct. 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., students are encouraged to stop by the Phi Theta Kappa table at Fall Fest to sign the completion pledge, part of a national community college movement. The event is being hosted by the college’s Nu Upsilon Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international academic honor society for community and junior colleges.

PTK members are serving as the student arm of the Com-munity College Completion Challenge, a national education initiative. Learn more at www.cccompletioncorps.org .

“By Monday, Oct. 28, please forward the names of students we should consider for nomination, as well as a brief summary as to why they would make a good candidate. We will help assist the students in ensuring they have access to the applica-tion,” Holladay said.

ApplauseSoccer Coach Alex George has been named to coach the first Mississippi Association of Colleges and Junior Colleges Men’s and Women’s All Star Soccer Game.

The event will serve as a showcase for the most outstanding players in the league and will allow four-year coaches to get a closer look at the best players in the MACJC.

George will coach the South Team for the Nov. 16 event. “It is one of the highest honors to represent the South in this event,” said George. “It will be an exciting game, bringing the very best talent together to compete. It should be a great opportu-nity for both sophomores who are looking to continue playing and four-year coaches to evaluate the very best MACJC play-ers.” Also Selected from MCC to represent the South will be sopho-mores Myers Falls and Christian Jackson. Both were a driving force in leading the men’s team to a 2012 Region 23 Runner-Up. The MCC women also have Miller and Merrick Watkins representing the Lady Eagles in the event. The games will be held at Freedom Ridge Park in Ridgeland.

MCC Graphic Designer Amy Miller won a Silver Medallion of Achievement from the National Council of Marketing and Public Relations District II.

The award was for her creation of the WEXR logo.

The NCMPR District 2 Medallion Awards recognize outstand-ing achievement in communications at community and techni-cal colleges in District 2, which includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Bermuda, British Virgin Island and the Bahamas.
