ENGLISH WOODLANDIt seems no time at all has passed this year andNovember is here already. The nursery has been ahive of activity preparing the site for another season. Now that autumn is well and truly upon us it is an idealtime to plant trees and shrubs, the soil is still warmenough for the roots to carry on growing even if theleaves are falling, giving the plant a good start for nextspring. We have our usual arrival of new fruit and ornamentaltrees as well as reliable hardy hedge plants, largespecimen trees and conifers and we are expectingsome outstanding Japanese maples. Come in and have a look at the nursery, the start ofthe tree planting season is my favourite time of year –I’d like to share it with you! Graham Grimmett

As I write this article summer is turning to autumn; early morning mists, cooler temperatures and shorterdays mark the transition. In the Sussex Wildlife Trust’s Selwyns Wood reserve there are also changes.Clusters of red berries can be seen hanging from the branches of the mountain ash, really the Rowan; var-ious fungi, including the classic picture-book toadstool Fly Agaric unmistakable by its red cap with whitespots, are pushing through the leaf-litter, and the purple of the heather on the heathland area is just start-ing to fade. However this year we can look back on a lovely summer. I am sure that most of you will have noticed thenumber of butterflies around; Peacocks, Red Admirals and ‘Whites’ abounding. In Selwyns Wood the vol-unteers, who do a weekly butterfly survey have been rewarded with many sightings. Not only have therebeen large numbers of our ‘regulars’: Speckled Woods, Ringlets and Meadow Browns but also an increasein the number of Gatekeepers, a butterfly we normally record but usually at lower levels. What gives usgreatest pleasure is when we see our two ‘special’ woodland butterflies – the Silver-washed Fritillary and

the White Admiral – and this year we have had sever-al sightings of both species. We were also luckyenough to see a Clouded Yellow flitting quickly overthe heather. This butterfly is a migrant arriving fromFrance and many have been seen in Sussex this yearso it is was good that one decided to pay us a quickvisit at Selwyns Wood.

Heathfield has been relatively peaceful this summerwith no noticeable crime patterns and very few inci-dents of anti-social behaviour. We have had a fewreports of noisy cars late at night and have workedsome later shifts to catch and advise any would be“boy racers". There is mostly no intention to annoyothers but thoughtlessness about how late at night itis and also how readily noise can travel. One of the initiatives that NPT teams force wide hasbeen taking part in is “OP SIGNATURE". OpSignature is aimed at stopping the postal, e-mail orphone scams. While anyone can be a victim, typi-cally, the scammers will pick an elderly person usu-ally with a good income. The scams are varied andsome will suggest the victim is entitled to an inheri-tance, or there is an offer of an investment. Otherswill send goods such as cakes or chocolates athugely inflated prices and keep sending such itemstaking payment straight from the victim’s bankaccount and can be very difficult to cancel. Theseare just a few examples and there are many varia-tions to these scams. As many of the victims are elderly and can be feel-ing isolated they will often get addicted to the con-tact that the scams offer, and not see it for the scamit is - or be too embarrassed to admit they had beentaken in. The victims are often people who havemade wise investments in the past and think this iswhy they have been chosen and there have beencases where hundreds of thousands of pounds havebeen lost by the victim. If you are getting this type of contact or know or sus-

pect someone may be targeted do give us a call atHeathfield and we can visit and offer advice andensure that the right support is in place. We have had a change of Chief Inspector atWealden as Dick Coates has retired and ChiefInspector Gary Pike has taken his place. You may have noticed in the press that HeathfieldPolice Station was to be closed and relocated, how-ever, at this time it looks unlikely this will happen asthere are no better sites locally to relocate to.Just a reminder that I as the NPT sergeant for thearea, PC Kelly Simmonds , PC Ted Anderson andPCSO's Fleur Whitaker, Geraldine Hodgens, LizMcDonagh, Paula Gatward, Matt Neve and MattBoyle all work out of the Heathfield Police Station. We all work shifts and weekends and the days andtimes, therefore, vary. If you want to see anyone atthe Police station either call or e-mail us and bookan appointment. The Sussex Police website has all the contactdetails and we also have a link on the Heathfield andWealden websites. New extension numbers: 568700, 568701, 568702, 568703

Once again the Twinning Association has enjoyed a very successful year. At the end of June the groupwent to Forges-les-Eaux for the weekend and were royally entertained. As always we had a warm wel-come from our hosts and experienced two museum visits, a picnic and a meal in a restaurant apart fromanything that, individually, we managed to do. In September the group from Forges (16 people) camehere and an enormously successful weekend was enjoyed by all. On the Saturday evening we playedskittles in the pub at Barcombe and the French thought that this was marvellous. A truly riotous eveningensued! In spite of the rain we managed an interesting visit to Hever Castle and grounds on theSunday, with a communal picnic in Hever Village Hall to get the day off to a good start. Apart from these excellent exchanges we have enjoyed the choral weekend in June which sawHeathfield Choral Society entertaining three choral societies from the Forges area. There was a mem-orable concert involving all choirs and both musical directors in the Kings Church on the Saturdayevening followed by a communal meal in Broad Oak Village Hall which truly cemented the friendshipsbeing made. Then in July Waldron Croquet Club played the annual match against the club fromCatenay, an event which originated in an introduc-tion through the Twinning Association. This time thematch took place in Catenay, on one of the hottestweekends of the year. Sadly Waldron lost, but notcatastrophically, but the friendliness of the occasionand the links made with the players in Catenay iswhat really matters. And, of course, Francinebrought her delicious Norman cheeses to LeMarché at the end of August. As always we have the occasional SoiréeFrançaise, with our efforts at speaking French oiledby refreshments. For details of these and anythingelse to do with the Association please contact GillTemple on 01435 812861.

August Bank Holiday Le Marché – très bien!

The French market day in Heathfield was very good inso many ways. The weather was delightful, thecrowds turned out in their thousands, the music asusual played a big part in the day, the fire station cel-ebrated their 90th anniversary in style and sales fromstalls and shops reached a record.Richard Ridley, chairman of the organising committee, said “It was a fantastic day, an absolutely gorgeousday. It started off a little chilly, but by 10 am the sunwas out and the day was warm. We definitely thinkthat there were record crowds at this, the biggest mar-ket of its kind in South East England. The French side of the market specialised in cheese, baked products, fruit and vegetables but they alsosold food they cooked on site (crèpes, paella, jumboprawns). Sales went through the roof and all stallholders seem delighted with the day.

The bands, organised by Eric Kemp, were first classand enjoyed by all and included the Heathfield SilverBand, Sussex Stompers Jazz band and the HorshamAccordion Band. The entertainment also includedspecial treats for children provided by Marco theMagician and Andy Bosco.Heathfield’s Fire Station open day was a great suc-cess with crowds of children, and adults, climbing inand out of the engines on display and enjoying thedemonstrations. More local shops than ever opened their doors and allof them I talked to had their best year of sales. Localstall holders also had a very good day with severalselling all their products before the market closed at3.30pm.All in all we try each year to make the day big-ger and better and I think this year we succeeded.”

The allotments at TheobaldsGreen have been very successfuland almost all of the plots are nowtaken. We are very grateful to allthe officers of the AllotmentAssociation for all their hard workin helping to get them up and run-ning.The next phase is the setting outand laying out of the burial groundand woodland burial ground andwe are currently having discus-sions with the Natural DeathCentre as to the best way ofachieving this. Work will takeplace during 2014 to allow burials

to commence early in 2015.We are currently working hard onthe Council’s budget for the2014/2015 financial year. It is like-ly to be a very difficult processbecause Government funding toWealden District Council is chang-ing and we are anticipating thatthere will be a shortfall in our ownbudget as a result. Unfortunatelythe Government will not releasethe actual figures until lateDecember which is too late for ournormal budget setting timescale,so we may have to carry out lastminute adjustments to the figures.

During this financial year, theParish Council have allocated thegrants shown below. The Parish Council welcomesapplications for grants from localgroups and organisations, howev-er, there is a limited budget andunfortunately it is not always possi-ble to meet all the requests. Girls only: Rainbows 5-7; Brownies 7-10; Guides10-14; Senior Section 14+All of our units had a busy programme organised forthe summer and this included lots of outdoor activi-ties. Some of our Brownies went on a pack holidaywith some of the Uckfield Brownies and others wentto a local village hall for a weekend pack holiday. These are always thoroughly enjoyed by the girlsand great fun for everyone. The Guides also hada chance to camp with other guides from bothUckfield and Hailsham at our Division site inChiddingly which is a beautiful setting. We had twoactivity days also at Bull River for all the ages whichincluded circus skills, camp skills, cooking and manyother things. The Brownies had a special afternooncalled Brownie Revels which was just for them withthe theme of the Wild West. Our Friends of Guidingladies organised the day with lots of games, refresh-

ments and some country dancing which proved verypopular!Due to our large numbers of girls in each section wedesperately need more adult helpers and would bereally pleased to hear from anyone who would beable to volunteer for just a few hours a week ormonth.
