TIPS FOR MOTIVATING A TEAM

• Goal

– First and foremost prerequisite for building an effective team is to establish a SMART goal.

A goal should neither be too optimistic nor too pessimistic

• SMART STANDS : -

– S – A Goal must have an element of stretch . In other words, the objective should be a little

more than what can be easily achieved. The stretch will simulate the team members to

involve themselves in the job and evolve creative ideas and alternatives that will lead to

success. In addition, a goal must also be ‘specific’. Vague actions or activities do not get

implemented.

– M – A goal should be ‘measurable’, i.e tangible and quantifiable.

– A – A goal should be achievable and action-oriented.

– R – A goal should be ‘realistic’ and ‘relevant’ otherwise the purpose of planning gets

defeated.

– T – The goal should always be ‘ time bound’. Have specific time limit for completing all the

activities.Contd …

Page 5: Motivating A Team

1st PART PHILOSOPHY

ANTS NEVER QUITIf they’re headed somewhere and you try to stop them, they’ll look for another way. They’ll climb over, they’ll climb under, they’ll climb around. They keep looking for another way.

LESSON: To never quit looking for a way to get where you’resupposed to go.

2nd PART PHILOSOPHY

ANTS THINK WINTER ALL SUMMER

You can’t be so naïve as to think summer will last forever. So ants are gathering their winter food in the middle of summer. You’ve got to think rocks as you enjoy the sand and sun.

LESSON: It is important to be realistic. Think ahead.

3rd PART PHILOSOPHY

ANTS THINK SUMMER ALL WINTER

During the winter, ants remind themselves, “This won’t last long; we’ll soon be out of here.”At the first warm day, the ants are out.If it turns cold again, they’ll dive back down, but then they come out the first warm day.

LESSON: Stay positive at all times.

THERE IS A WAY

Page 11: Motivating A Team

A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet.

He held up a sign which said:

Page 12: Motivating A Team

A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat.

There were only a few coins in the hat.

Page 13: Motivating A Team

He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words.

He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by will see the new words.

Page 14: Motivating A Team

Soon the hat began to fill up.

A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy.

Page 15: Motivating A Team

The boy recognized his footsteps and asked,”Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?”

That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were.

Page 16: Motivating A Team

The man said,

“I only wrote the truth.

I said what you said but in a way.”

Page 17: Motivating A Team

What he had written was:

"Today is a day and I cannot see it."

Page 18: Motivating A Team

Do you think the first sign and the second sign were saying the same thing?

Of course both signs told people theboy was blind.

Page 19: Motivating A Team

But the first sign simply told people to help by putting some money in the hat.

The second sign told people that they were able to enjoy the beauty of the day, but the

boy could not enjoy it because he was blind.

Page 20: Motivating A Team

Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective?

Page 21: Motivating A Team

There are at least two lessons we can learn from this simple story.

Page 22: Motivating A Team

The first is,

“Be thankful for what you have. Someone else has less.

Help where you can.”

Page 23: Motivating A Team

The second is,

“Be .

Be .

Think .

THERE IS ALWAYS A WAY!”
