Motor Industry (SIMI) at theorganisation's 44th AGM,held at Croke Park.
The new Presidentaddressed delegates andspoke about the difficulties inthe aftermarket sector,"There is a double blow whennew car sales fall; not onlydoes car sales’ activityreduce but there are fewercars to service and repair.Allied to this is a flourishingblack market, which alwaysoccurs when incomes falland the Motor Industry is aprime example of that.
“The sale of dubious carparts and in particular 'part-worn tyres', has escalated asconsumers make false short-term savings that will comeback to haunt them in thelonger run. There isn't a
member garage out therewho hasn't had a customerreturn after getting a botchedservice job from anunqualified mechanic usingsub-standard, and in somecases unsafe, parts."
Mr. Lyons highlighted theneed for members to getback to basics; "SIMImembers have the highestqualified technicians in theIndustry and undoubtedly weprovide the highest quality ofservice."
Backing up this assertion,the SIMI recentlylaunched SIMI APR (AutosureProfessional Register) toraise awareness of theimportance for motorists tohave their vehicles servicedwhen they should be and onlyin garages which are fullyqualified to do so. For moreinformation on this servicesee page 8.

New EU legislation fortyres comes intoeffect in November ofthis year. By this dateat the latest, all tyressold in the EU mustcarry a label thatspecifies rollingresistance, wetbraking performance andexternal tyre/road noise.Implementation of thenew labelling regulationswill require tyremanufacturers to operatea self certification policy,but sanctions forviolations and noncompliance are toremain within the remitof national law in thetwenty seven EUmember states. The new Peugeot 208 will arrive at Peugeotdealerships in Ireland for launch on the 30thJune. Smaller on the outside, but bigger on theinside than its predecessor the 207, the 208 isalso 110kg lighter, thus giving lower CO2emissions, with lower fuel consumption andrunning costs.

I was very impressed with this Toyota Auris Hybrid. What impressed me most wasthe smooth and silent progress at all times, not just when running in electric mode.Then there was the seamless switch from electric power to petrol or petrol/electriccombined power, as the operating conditions demanded. Were it not for the gaugein the speedometer, indicating the constantly changing power sources, I would never
have known, that the power supply was changing from time to time. Also it was good to see thatwhen you lifted your foot off the accelerator, the traction motors started to generate electricity torecharge the traction batteries. This technology seemed to be so perfectly suited to our currenteconomic conditions, where petrol has become so devastatingly expensive.
In the picture left, the speedometer is on theright and in its darkened centre, there is anillustration showing a petrol engine, electrictraction motor and a traction battery. There is alsoa dotted line with an arrowhead, showingelectricity from the Traction motor/generator beingreturned to the battery.
Driving in Eco mode, the car still has anabundance of power on tap if you need a suddenburst of acceleration. In fact the car will cruisesilently and effortlessly on motorways at the legalmaximum of 120 kph (75 mph), with power andperformance to spare. Its top speed is said to be180 kph (111 mph), with 0-100 kph acceleration injust 11.4 seconds. To go with this impressiveperformance, its fuel consumption by EU testing
standards is 70 mpg (4.0 lt/100 km), in all threecycles - Urban, Extra urban and Combined. Exhaustemissions are 93 gm/km, putting the carcomfortably within Irish road tax band A, with acurrent annual charge of €160.
I know that it has been said, that while Hybridsdo very well in the EU fuel consumption tests, theydo not deliver nearly as impressive performancesin actual day to day driving. While I didn’t actuallydo any specific fuel consumption tests myself, Iwas absolutely delighted with the snail’s pace thatthe fuel level indicator moved from full towards thehalf way mark. I cannot remember when I last hada test car that had such a miserly fuelconsumption. So, in my opinion, this Toyota AurisHybrid, is not only a very pleasant and satisfying

Adding to the comfortableand effortless nature of thedriving experience was theConstantly Variable automaticTransmission. When reverse wasselected there was an audiblewarning, which was useful forpedestrians and anyone who maybe in close proximity to the car. Inaddition the reversing cameragave a visual picture of the areabehind the car, in a colourillustration on the left hand sideof the internal rear view mirror.The electric power assistedsteering, is geared to give 2.8turns from lock to lock. Thesteering wheel itself adjusts forboth reach and height. It has agood quality feel with itsluxurious leather covering andgives a positive feel of the road.
I found the rear legroom to begood, but that naturally dependson how far back the two frontseats are positioned. However,while I was able to get perfectlycomfortable in the rear seat, I amalso of the opinion, that as far asadults are concerned, it is onlysuitable for two persons. It maybe suitable for three children, but
for setting and adjusting theexterior rear view mirrors are onthe lower side of the faciabetween the steering column andthe driver’s door. There is also aswitch here for folding in themirrors when parking. Thedriver’s door armrest has buttonsfor the central locking and forraising or lowering the fourelectric windows. The left handstalk under the steering wheellooks after the headlamp beamadjustments and the directionindicators, while the right handarm controls the wipers andwashers. There is a coveredvanity mirror in each sun visor.
On the road the car rides andhandles well. The electronicallycontrolled braking systemincorporates anti-lock,emergency brake assist andelectronic brakeforce distributionwith vehicle stability control and ahill holder assist. It uses 296 mmdiameter ventilated discs at thefront and 259 mm plain discs atthe back.
The Luxury specification ofthe Auris Hybrid is fitted withseventeen inches diameter, fivespoke, cast alloy wheels, shodwith 215/45 R 17 MichelinPrimacy HP tyres.

even teenagers may find thecentre position, to be far toouncomfortable. The two outerpositions are fitted with ISOfixfittings for child safety seats.
The rear seat backrest isdivided 60/40 to give extraversatility and facilitate thecarrying of awkward items ofluggage. The luggage spacebetween the luggagecompartment floor and theunderside of the removable shelf,is on the small size for a car inthis price range and segment ofthe market. However, when youlift the luggage floor covering,there is a large removable plasticbox, that can hold a lot of smalleritems. It sits above theSpacesaver spare wheel.
The Auris Hybrid is unsuitablefor towing trailers and caravansand I suspect carrying loads onthe roof is not recommendedeither.
From a driving point of view,the instruments and controls arelaid out for comfort and ease ofuse. The curved top instrumentbinnacle contains two large rounddials. That on the right hand sideis the speedometer, which alsocontains a digital view of thepower source and flow. Itcontains other markings too,
indicating which performancemode has been selected; EV, Ecoor Power. The matching dial onthe left is divided into segmentsaround the circumference.Starting on the left with bluemarkings, it indicates the chargelevel of the traction batteries,next comes two Eco modesegments with green markings,helping the driver to adopt a moreeconomical driving style. Finallyone large Power segment withwhite markings, shows the levelof power being supplied foracceleration and maximumperformance. The centre of thisgauge has two other indicators,that on the left being the fuellevel and alongside on the rightthe engine temperature indicator.

The SIMI (Society of the IrishMotor Industry) recentlylaunched the SIMI AutosureProfessional Register (SIMI
APR), a new scheme toprofessionalise car servicing inIreland.
According to a recent survey,two thirds of motorists are puttingoff their car service because theycannot afford it.
Past President of SIMI, GerryCaffrey says, “There are a lot ofdrivers out there who don’t gettheir car serviced because there’snothing visibly wrong with it. Manywait until something serious goeswrong, such as engine or a brakefailure. That’s when it’s often toolate and the cost to fix the vehiclefar outweighs the cost of the initialservice.”
“It is understandable thatpeople are looking to save moneywhere they can. It may seem likean unnecessary spend whenmoney is tight but regular carservicing will save you money inthe long term.”
“There has been a big increasein untrained and illegal operatorsat the fringes of our Industryoffering to service cars. While itmay seem like a bargain at thetime, often the work carried out bysuch operators is to a poorstandard, which could leave a carin dangerous condition and theowner out of pocket whensomething goes wrong with theircar.”
Cars have become increasinglycomplex and in need of very
specific servicing expertise, evenusing the wrong grade of oil canseriously damage a modernengine.
Similar to the RECI schemecurrently in operation for ElectricalContractors, only qualifiedtechnicians can sign off on servicework carried out. Parts that needreplacement will be kept to showthe necessity of such replacement,which will only be done on thecustomer’s specific instructions,and only original car parts, or partsof matching quality, will be used.
After the service work is signedoff by a qualified technician, anSIMI APR sticker with the currentyear will be placed on the windowof the car, to show that it wasserviced to the highest possiblestandard. A record over time ofadhering to such professionalservicing should also ensure amuch greater value on the vehiclewhen the time comes to trade it in.

“There has been a sharp rise inthe sale of part-worn tyres andsecond hand parts recently.Unbeknownst to the motorist,these could have been used on acar that was previously involved ina crash and beyond the point atwhich they could be safely used,you just don’t know. In addition,
the driver will not know how suchparts will perform under use andwe know that many are seriouslysubstandard.”
“We urge people to get theircar serviced to the high standardset out in this initiative, which willensure that if any problems aredeveloping in your car, they can bedetected and fixed before theybecome a serious problem, statesMr. Brett.”
Mr Caffrey adds, “I’m aware
that in these financiallychallenging times, motorists canoften be apprehensive about thecosts of getting their carserviced.”
“With SIMI APR, when aquotation is given in advance andit becomes apparent that extrawork or parts are required, thegarage should always contact thecustomer first before proceedingwith the work. If there is an issuewith any work carried out by an
SIMI member garage, customerscan avail of the free, independentcomplaints service on offer by theSIMI.”
Under the SIMI APR scheme,the customer will receive aninformation leaflet after the servicehas been carried out andinformation on the specific workcarried out on their vehicle.
Motorists should look out forthe SIMI APR logo when they go toget their next service.

On the road the two litre diesel engine was smooth and almost silent inoperation. The gear change was likewise smooth and positive in operation,making the Avensis a relaxing pleasure to drive. The electric, power assistedsteering required just 2.7 turns from lock to lock and it too was smooth andeffortless in operation, but still transmitted a good feel of the road to the driver.
This model is credited with a top speed of 200 kph (124 mph) with 0-100kph acceleration in just 9.8 seconds. This spirited performance does not comeat the expense of fuel consumption, as by EU testing standards, combinedcycle fuel consumption is 61 mpg (4.6 lt/100 km). Under Urban cycle
It is said that first impressions are lasting. This Toyota Avensis certainly made an excellent first impression, with is spacious interior and absolutelytop quality interior finish. The steering wheel was covered with a smooth luxurious feeling leather. The seats were upholstered in a combinationof soft cream coloured leather and suede cloth. The two front seats were well shaped and comfortable, while the rear bench seat was bothspacious and comfortable, with ISOfix fittings in the two outer positions for child safety seats. The centre section had a folding armrest thatincorporated two cupholders. The instruments and controls were well laid out for comfort and ease of use whilst driving.

Over theyears, with mechanicallyoperated handbrakes, wehave become accustomed topulling them up to apply thebrakes and pushing them
down to release the brakes.On the Avensis, you pushdown on the switch to applythe brakes and pull up torelease them. The left handstalk under the steeringwheel, controls the lights anddirection indicators, while theright hand stalk operates thewipers and washers.
On the road the car ridesand handles well. In fact itprovides a real limousinequality ride. Visibility is goodall round, which is a greathelp when reversing ormanoeuvring in confinedspaces. It has a large luggageboot and there is a ski-hatchbehind the folding reararmrest, for carrying longer,awkward items, like skis,fishing rods, or similar items,without drastically reducingpassenger carrying abilities. Ifyou need even more space,the rear seat backrest isdivided 60/40, but this doesreduce passenger carryingcapacity.

PRICESAROUNDPeugeot has announced a new model
naming strategy, that will see each modelretaining a permanent identification. From
now on, Peugeot models will no longer changename when they undergo a facelift or completerenewal. As an example, the forthcoming 208will retain its model name for ever more.Permanently fixing the model identificationnumbers will help simplify the understanding ofthe range and assist in growing brandrecognition.
Back in 1929, Peugeot began its three digitnumbering system, with the unveiling of the new201. Peugeot's naming system has since beenstructured around a central zero with the firstdigit representing the size of the car and the finaldigit indicating the generation of the model. Thissystem evolved at the end of the 1990s, toinclude different body types - CC and SW - and
since 2005, a central double zero denotesmodels with a high structure, such as the 3008or 5008.
From this point on, all models which alreadybear a number with a final digit 8, such as the208, 308 or 3008, will keep their modelidentification when they are revised or replaced.However, this year new models designedspecifically for emerging international markets,will be identified by numbers ending in 1.
The newly announced Peugeot 301, acompact four door saloon destined for Centraland Eastern Europe, Russia, Ukraine, Greece, theMiddle East, Persian Gulf, African States andLatin American markets, will go on sale inNovember 2012. It will in time become one ofthe Marque's best selling vehicles world wide.The new 301 will have its world premiere at theParis Motor Show in September.
