About Motorvated

Motorvated Racing is one of the leading UIM Class 3A offshore powerboat racing teams and operates a Phantom 19G hull modified by John Guille to incorporate stepped ventilation.

Jack Bobin is the team driver having started his racing career in the 2014 season proving himself in a tired Tintorera hull with which he won all bar one of the national races entered in which he came a close second.

Whilst it is was Jack’s first year of racing his knowledge gained from growing up around and physically operating fast powerboats. He became the youngest person to achieve the RYA PB2 certificate using the rule allowing the test to be taken a maximum of six months prior to reaching the age where it could be issued.

Racing History GUERNSEY

The team campaigned a tired Tintorera hull in the 2014 UIM 3A World Championships held in Guernsey, where the structural inadequacies of the boat became apparent.

In the first race whilst holding third position Jack found the whole of the dashboard fell into his lap resulting in retirement. Undeterred repairs were made and the second race resulted in the same third position held until the bottom of the hull delaminated and the boat promptly sank to it’s gunwhales! Again undaunted the boat was recovered and the team worked overnight to the surprise of the media to replace the bottom of the boat, rebuild the motor and saddle to be on the start line for the final race.

Making the difficult choice of whether to run a fast propeller or nurse the boat to a finish the latter was called, however Jack ran true to form and pushed the boat to a third place finish against the international fleet.

The winning boat of that world championship is the actual boat that the team run now.

Despite the hull being very much on it’s last legs Jack decided to run the boat at the Coniston records week where he established the 3A UK record.

Going into 2015 with the new boat Jack found himself with a whole new learning curve of handling a stepped boat. Theses boats become highly unstable both during a turn but also in a straight line. He very quickly adapted and took the challenge of achieving some 3600 miles of testing prior to competing the World Championships in Sweden. The aim being International competition he competed in a few national races prior which proved him and the boat to be unbeatable.

Racing History SWEDEN

Sweden presented a whole new challenge with the protected waters presented by the Baltic Sea. For many years it has been unthinkable that a UK boat prepared for our exposed waters could challenge the Scandinavians on home turf.

Well Jack surprised the whole audience when arriving at the harbour turn not only in front of the whole 3A fleet but mixed within the faster catamarans of 3B. The latter laps lacking the slightly more exposed waters outside of the inlet allowed William Soderlind to pass and just hold onto the win.

The following two races proved to be glass like conditions in sweltering heat. Very pleasant for the spectators of course but extremely difficult for the UK competitors to compete against the flying Swedes.

Jack drove the boat with astonishing prowess to secure a further second place in both of the following races separated from the winner by extremely small margins. In fact the totalled times elapsed showed less than 30 seconds in total over three hours of racing. An excellent result but leaving the hunt for gold unfinished.

Racing History COWES AND CONISTON

Following on from the Sweden success the boat was entered into the newly revived Cowes Poole Cowes race racing against boats such as a triple engined 1500 hp Baja and Bubble deck cigarette. Whilst obviously standing no chance of victory against these beasts he went on to deliver an outstanding victory over not only the class 3 boats but also the class 2 boats with their 200 hp + motors. An incredible average speed of 62.1 Mph.

The team were obviously becoming the dominant force in class 3 racing and to stamp that authority they attended the last race of the season being an OCR race. These races are run over fairly short courses and the long legged class 3 boat would not normally be considered a viable contender against the lighter more nimble OCR boat with their highly modified engines. However the race craft showed through and he won the overall event against some very seasoned OCR racers.

How do you finish of a year like this. Well Jack and the team took the boat to Coniston for the speed records week and achieved a new national 3A record of 71.1mph along with a Club 3 record of 70.00 mph. The chase for the world record was on, however the weather closed on the final day with it well within reach and but for the course being closed may well have achieved the ultimate goal.

Whilst there Jack took the opportunity to take his fathers boat up the course to establish the record for the Z150 class leaving him with a plethora of awards for his years racing.

But what of the rest of team? Jack is well blessed with having a superb team around him and has been joined in the navigator seat by Jamie White who became an excellent navigator during this period. Jamie has since decided to step to one side to allow another navigator fill the spot and we expect he will begin his own driving campaign in one of the teams boats this year.

The team led by Jack’s father Kerry has always taking a philanthropic approach to their racing and see the assistance of other teams as being part of their integrity. Kerry races occasionally in both a Revenger and the team also run another race boat which is designed to allow guest drivers to take part.

Shaun joins Jack this year as navigator with his RNLI grounding hopefully providing the ability to achieve great things. Max and Alex are also undertaking training within the team boats to reinforce the teams capabilities

Mechanically the team is blessed to have Doug Ashley focussing his attentions and experience for the last two years on Jacks racing and that will continue. Doug is extremely particular about who he works with in racing and it is testament that as soon as he heard Jack was going racing that he decided to return to the sport having known him since he was old enough to stand.

Logistics and media is assisted greatly by John Moore who again not only recognised this emerging UK talent but has become both a close friend and ally to the team.

The teams aims this year are to approach the World Championships in Norway with the sole goal of putting themselves in with the greatest chance of success.

Self funded with over £100k of investment and commitment to continue the team now presents an excellent opportunity for a company sponsor partner to join in the journey of achieving that illusive gold medal and sharing in the success.
