Charles Henry Douglas Clarke, 1909-1981.

Biographical Sketch

(See also Box 19, Folder 1: “A Tribute to Charles Henry Douglas Clarke, 1909-1981” by Harry G. Lumsden. The Canadian Field Naturalist, vol. 98 [1981], pp. 379-391; and Box 18, Folder 1: autobiographical sketch for the Wildlife Society.)

C.H.D. Clarke was born on June 14, 1909, at Kerwood, Ontario; his mother was a teacher and naturalist, and his father was a Methodist minister. After completing his Ph.D. in 1935 at the University of Toronto in the Department of Zoology, Clarke worked for the federal Department of Mines and Resources. His work included field investigations on the muskox preserve on the Thelon River. In 1938, Clarke married Muriel Langstroth whom he had met at the University of Toronto while they were both doing post-graduate work. During World War II, Clarke was involved in the North Pacific Planning Project, and advocated wildlife interests in the area of the Alaska Highway, the Canol Road and the Arctic Coast. In 1944, he joined the Ontario Department of Lands and Forests, where he was successively in charge of wildlife research and wildlife management, and finally, Chief of the Fish and Wildlife Branch, retiring in 1972. During his retirement, Clarke served as a consultant on wildlife with the New York State Temporary Commission on the Future of the Adirondacks, and, through the Canadian International Development Agency, with the Kenya Game Department (1965) and Tanzania National Parks (1972-1974). For a number of years, Clarke was also a Commissioner on the International Great Lakes Fishery Commission, and in its early years, a Governor of the Arctic Institute of North America. He was an Honorary Member, Past President and Leopold Medallist of the Wildlife Society, and Honorary President of the Federation of Ontario Naturalists. Throughout his life, Clarke wrote extensively on wildlife, conservation and hunting (see Box 19, Folder 1: Harry G. Lumsden’s bibliography of Clarke). His unpublished drafts also include such subjects as doxology, literature, and reflections on man’s relationship with nature. Clarke’s death on March 25, 1981, was the result of an ice-fishing accident in which the ice gave way under him on Lake Simcoe. Clarke left his wife, Muriel, daughter, Mary, his sons Leigh (who has five children), and Stephen. After his death, the Canadian Wildlife Federation established the “Doug Clarke Memorial Award,” and the Ontario Chapter of the Canadian Society of Environmental Biologists established the “C.H.D. Clarke Award for Excellence in Environmental Biology.”
