Police investigate babys injuryPolice are investigating an incident which left a baby boy unconscious in a Melton West home last week. Paramedics rushed to the Fairhaven Boulevard home about 10am on Tuesday after initial reports that the nine-month-old had fallen out of bed. Paramedics stabilised the child before flying him to the Royal Childrens Hospital in a critical condition.
Prison consortium namedA consortium that includes the GEO Group Australia, John Holland, Honeywell, Capella Capital and GEO Care has been chosen to deliver the $670 million Ravenhall prison project as part of a public-private partnership. The new prison will be built near the Metropolitan Remand Centre and the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre. Its expected to create 650 jobs during construction and another 600 once completed.
You beauty: four awardsFour Melton council and community submissions have won at the annual Keep Australia Beautiful sustainable cities awards. They are the Toolern Vale and District Primary School for its bird-watching, gardens and cooking make our school special program; Melton Family History Group for revealing and celebrating Meltons history; Melton Library and Learning Hub, for its green stars shining energy efficiency program; and the Pinkerton Landcare group, with Western Water.
Cancer Council Victoria is calling on Moorabool and Melton residents to join a band of yellow and help beat cancer this Daffodil Day.
Volunteers such as Kate Allan are donating their time to sell daffodil merchandise to support people affected by cancer, including 337 Melton and 152 Moorabool residents diagnosed with the disease last year alone.
Kate has been volunteering for Cancer Council events and fund-raisers since her father died from the disease four years ago.
Because its affected me personally, I kind of understand how hard cancer can be and how rough that situation can be on someone, she said.
No one should have to go through that and the more money we raise for Cancer Council
the better, so I get involved in as many things as possible.
With the help of 2300 volunteers, this years daffodils will be available at 390 street stalls across Victoria.
The Cancer Council hopes to raise $1.65 million in Victoria this Daffodil Day, August 22, to continue its life-changing work in cancer research, prevention and support.
People should get involved because the more money we raise for Cancer Council the better, Kate said. It goes straight to research and the more research thats completed, the more lives we can save.

100% of your fi re levy goes to our fi re servicesLast year, the Victorian Government replaced the Fire Services Levy with a fairer system, as recommended by the Victorian Bushfi res Royal Commission. Now every property owner contributes a fair share to Victorias fi re services, not just those with adequate insurance. Eligible pensioners and veterans also receive a $50 concession.
100 per cent of the fi re levy goes to support greater funding of the operations of the Country Fire Authority and Metropolitan Fire Brigade. This includes fi refi ghters, staff and volunteers, training, community education, protective clothing, vital lifesaving equipment and more than 1,200 fi re stations and 2,300 trucks.
Each year, Victorias fi refi ghters attend more than 78,000 incidents, including road accidents and rescues, bush and grass fi res, fi res in the home, and workplace incidents. Its a fairer fi re levy.

More than $16 million in lost superannuation is waiting to be claimed in Melton and surrounding suburbs, according to statistics released by the Australian Taxation Office last week.
The figures reveal there are 2268 accounts across Melton, Melton West, Kurunjang and Toolern Vale with a total of $16,602,472 yet to be collected.
Brookfield, Exford, Eynesbury and Melton South have a total of $7,944,194 in lost super, while Caroline Springs, Ravenhall, Cairnlea, Burnside and Deer Park have $26,488,099.
ATO assistant commissioner John Shepherd said there was a total of $14 billion in lost super across Australia.
Theres more than $6 billion of super sitting in accounts where funds have not been kept up to date with changes to personal details, Mr Shepherd said.
Its easy for this to happen because when people get married or move house, the last thing on their mind is updating their details with a super fund.
An additional $8 billion in super is sitting in accounts that have not received contributions for five years or more.
More than 40 per cent of super account holders have more than one account, he said. Many of these accounts have not received contributions for some time, and those with small balances can be eroded by super fund fees and charges.
Search for any lost super by creating a myGov account and linking to the ATO.

Meltons Doretta Charles is working hard to make her dreams come true. And thanks to her recent completion of Matchworks Deadly Yakka program, they are.
Ms Charles had been out of work for some time but wanted to rejoin the workforce and be a role model for her 12-year-old daughter.
Shes now doing a part-time traineeship as an allied health assistant at Djerriwarrh Health Services. I never thought Id be doing this kind of work, but Im giving it a go and its really exciting for me, Ms Charles said.
I dont want my daughter to have a mum who doesnt work.
I feel so good now as Im getting ready for work and shes getting ready for school. Its something I never thought would happen. Im over the moon.
The four-week Deadly Yakka program, newly launched in Bacchus Marsh, is tailored to indigenous job seekers who face unique barriers to employment.
Ms Charles, who described herself as thirsty for information, said the program was reassuring and helped boost her confidence.
It was important for me because I really love getting information and meeting new people, she said. It was amazing, meeting all different kinds of people who can help you.
Ms Charles hopes to eventually land a full-time job and own her own business or manage her own cafe. She said she highly recommended the program to all young Aboriginal people and hoped the programs would run more often.
Indigenous employment consultant Irene Sazdov said the program had been a great success, with all 12 participants graduating last week.

The Pentland Hills Landcare Group has been recognised for its commitment to the health and sustainability of the land as one of this years finalists in the 2014 national Landcare awards.
The group is one of 69 finalists in the running for the Landcare Peoples Choice division of this years awards.
And as the state winner in 2013, the group joins seven other state and territory finalists in the 2014 Qantas Landcare Innovative Community Group Award.

Hills land-carers laudedsaid the group was delighted to be a finalist. It was such an honour to have won the Victoria Landcare group award and as a finalist for the national Landcare awards, we are very aware that were representing our local farming community, Mr Dufty said.
Everything the Pentland Hills Landcare Group has achieved is due to support from our local community.
While there are many great Landcare groups around Australia that deserve to win, lets try and put Bacchus Marsh on the map by winning the Peoples Choice Award.
The group, working with landholders, the local catchment management association,
the Department of Environment and Primary Industries and Melbourne Water, has taken the lead in a large-scale biolink project set to link Lerderderg and Werribee Gorge state parks.
So far, 22 kilometres of the biolink have been completed, with the last 11 kilometres due to be completed next year.
The Bacchus Marsh community is being encouraged to get behind the group by voting at www.landcareonline.com.au.
Voting is open until 6pm on Wednesday, September 17. Winners will be announced the next day at a 2014 national Landcare awards dinner in Melbourne.
