FROM THE EDITORAlthough I am not at liberty to discuss details at this time, UFO

group coalition talks have taken place among U.S. groups andsomething good may come out of them for UFOlogy. NICAP—rumored to be at rock bottom—denies these reports, and in fact hasrebuilding plans underway with a new president and some newBoard Members. Reliable informants have told me that some time inthe not-too-distant future NICAP will participate in a move towardcoalition activities. Exactly where all of this is leading remainsobscure, but there is at least some hope for a closer workingrelationship among major U.S. UFO organizations. That would be aworthwhile development, and MUFON is prepared to cooperate if asatisfactory coalition structure can be negotiated. MUFON BoardMembers have participated in these preliminary talks and are closelyinformed on the situation. News developments will be reported inthe Journal.

PILOT DISAPPEARS AFTER REPORTING UFO

The widely reported disappear-ance case is being investigated forMUFON by Australian representativesKeith Basterfield and Bill Chalker. Hereare their preliminary reports,. slightlyedited to avoid. duplication.-Editor)The following summary has beenprepared from details carried in thelocal media, press, TV and radio.

On October 21, 1978, at 6:19 PMFrederick Valentich, 20, of Melbourne,Victoria, took off in a single engineCessna 182 aircraft and headedtowards King Island, some 160 km SSWof Melbourne. The flight was scheduledto add to his night flying hours as heworked towards ob ta in ing acommercial pilot's license. Mr.Valentich had spent 3 years as a cadetwith the air training corp and was thenan instructor with them. He hadundergone acrobatic training, and infact overall, most of his flying time hadbeen in the same Southern Air ServicesCessna which he was flying at the time.Weather conditions in the area weredescribed as perfect and there shouldhave been almost unlimited visibility.

At 7 PM he called air traffic controland advised that he was over CapeOtway. This meant that he would thenhave been about to fly over the watersof the Bass Straight towards KingIsland. A call from him at 7:06 PM askedif there were any known aircraft in hisarea below 5000 feet (he was at 4500feet). He was advised that there was notraffic and replied that, "There seems tobe a large aircraft below 5000 feet."Asked what kind of aircraft he said, "Icannot confirm. It has four bright lightswhich appear to be landing lights. Theaircraft has just passed me about 1000feet above."

Control asked if he were sure itwas a large aircraft? "Affirmative, at thespeed it was travelling. Are there anyRAAF aircraft in the vicinity?" He was

told there was no Air Force traffic. At 7:08 PM Mr. Valentich said: "It

is approaching from due East towardsme. It seems to be playing some sort ofgame. Flying at speed I cannotestimate."

7:09 PM: "It is not an aircraft.It's...", radio contact was brieflybroken. Mr. Valentich was then askedto describe the object: "It is flying past.It has a long shape. I cannot identifymore than that. It's coming for me rightnow."

7:10 PM: "It seems to bestationary. I'm orbiting and the thing isorbiting on top of me also. It has a greenlight and a sort of metallic light on theoutside." A few seconds later hereported that the object had vanished;Asked about the -possibility of militaryaircraft, ground control, reported thatthere was no military traffic in the area.

7:12 PM: "The engine is rough, idling and coughing." He was thenasked what his intentions were andcommented: "I'm proceeding to KingIsland. Unknown aircraft is hovering ontop of me. It is not an aircraft."

. After the Melbourne flight servicehad acknowledged that call, there was along metallic noise . on the radio.Nothing more was heard from the pilot, and the plane was declared missing. Anintensive search began on Sunday the22nd. An RAAF Orion long-rangereconnaissance aircraft was dispatchedfrom Edinburgh, SA, to check the areaand fishing boats from King Island alsojoined in.

On Monday the 23rd, there was areported, sighting of debris but uponchecking this was found to be nothingto do with the plane. An oil slick .wasalso found and samples taken to see ifthey were plane fuel. A Nomad aircraft

.conducted a search on the 24thaccompanied by several other lightaircraft, but at the date of writing this

report no trace has been found of theaircraft or pilot-Keith • Basterfield,10/24/78 .Sources: Adelaide Advertiser, 10/23/78and 10/24/78; Adelaide News, 10/23/78and 10/24/78; Melbourne Sun,10/23/78 and 10/24/78; Australian,10/23/78 and 10/24/78; and radiostations 5DN and 5AA news servicesboth days. .

King Island.is a large island to thenorthwest of Tasmania. The pilot andplane were missing early on Saturdaynight, October 21, 1978, and initialreports made no mention of anypossible UFO connection. Theproverbial "cat got out of the bag" lateon the following day, when news of aUFO event being involved first leakedout, which is unprecedented in terms ofofficial statements in other spectacularcases. With Monday morning, themedia throughout Australia were notonly carrying accounts of the incident, but were quoting from actualt r an sc r . i p t s f rom the tapedconversation between the pilot andMelbourne Flight Service.

Valentich intended to fly to KingIsland for two reasons: To pick upcrayfish for the officers of the AirTraining Corps, where he was aninstructor, and to log up more nightflying time. He was an inexperiencednight flier and although this was the firsttime he had flown the trip at night, hehad gone'several times before. Heintended to get back to Melbourne at 10PM, to join his family in a reunion withfriends. The young pilot had flown withan unrestricted license since Februarythis year and had an instrument rating.

He flew over Cape Otway (whichhas a light house) at about 7:00 PM. At7:06 PM the first hint of somethinguntoward came when Valentichcontacted Melbourne Flight Serviceinquiring about other traffic in the area.

(Pilot, continued)When the Cessna failed to arrive

on King Island on schedule at 7:28 PMlight aircraft began a visual and radioresearch, but nothing was found.Conditions at the time were clear, amild northwesterly breeze accompani-ed by unlimited visibility. The Cessnawas equipped with a life jacket and aradio survival beacon. Nothing hasbeen heard from the beacon.

An RAAF Orion (a long rangemaritime reconnaissance aircraft) fromEdinburgh, South Australia, conducteda "tracking crawl" following the coursetaken by Valentich's Cessna andcontinued searching all day Sunday. The only thing found during Sundaywas an oil slick lying some 18 milesnorth of King Island. On Monday,October 23rd, the search continuedand shipping was sent to sample the oilslick to determine whether this was oilor aviation fuel. What was first thoughtto be debris in the area turned out to bepacking cases and plastic bags floatingin the sea.

THE WITNESS

Frederick Valentich was consideredto be a competent pilot and was highlythought of. He was the son of Mr. &Mrs. Guido Valentich and one of fourchildren. Mr. Valentich duringinterviews on October 23rd, wasquoted as saying that his son was "abeliever" in UFOs, and apparentlyundertook an interest in the subjectwhich may or may not have eventuatedfrom a previous UFO sighting. Eight toten months ago, about January orMarch, 1978, he apparently claimed hesaw "a brightly lit object" in the westernsky flying at a tremendous speed fromsouth to north. His father also statedthat his son had read a lot on the subjectand was quoted as saying he hadpurportedly seen "secret UFO files."Just what this does to a percipient'scredibility in the post "CE3K" dayscannot be assessed in this case becauseof Valentich's disappearance. Butcertainly it will figure^heavily in furtherenquiries into this extraordinary case.

Inevitably, the incident has come infor its share of speculation as to whathappened. Transport departmentofficials suggested the pilot may have

become disoriented and somehowinverted his plane and what he saw waseither reflections of his own lights orthose of the light houses at Cape Otwayand King Island! However the 6-minuteconversation on record gives no suchindication and the type of plane wouldonly operate for some 30 secondsupside down before the motor wouldstop from fuel starvation. Experiencedpilots publicly stated they found thisexplanation almost as extraordinary asthe events themselves. Meteor activitywas also suggested as a stimulus. Apartfrom the UFO hypothesis, thepossibility of a hoax cannot be entirelyruled out, however the matter is farfrom resolved.

DISCUSSION

The obvious similarities with theKinross and Mantell cases looms large, however, the object described alsoreminds us of the Coyne Ohiohelicopter case of 1973. Another single-engine plane disappeared without tracein Bass Strait on December 24, 1969.The plane crashed into the sea 8 km offCape Otway on a flight from KingIsland. No trace of wreckage was everfound. King Island itself has had anumber of reports in past yearsincluding a spectacular report in 1976. Ifthe pilot remains missing, the casecould esculate into a classic mystery;however, if the pilot is found alive andwell, speculation will center on threehypotheses. Either he experienced theUFO sighting as described, heunderwent a severe disorientation, orthe event was a hoax of some sort. If heis found dead and his wreckage isfound, the matter may or may not besatisfactorily resolved. Only time willtell.

NOTE: This preliminary report is basedon details determined by our enquiries, from press reports and the many radioand TV reports carried on October22nd and 23rd. Further postscripts willadvise you of subsequent develops asthey happen and a more detailed reportwill follow in a few weeks time oncematters are resolved one way oranother.

Postscript (10/24/78)

1. The Australian 10/24/78mentions a report of a light planemaking a mysterious late-night landingin the western district, not far from theCape Otway area, at about the time ofthe alleged UFO encounter.

2. Other facts mentioned in mypreliminary report on this affair must betaken into consideration if the missingpilot turns up. Officials are generallypessimistic about finding the pilot alive.

3. The possibility of a genuine UFOenounter or a remarkable hoax loomslarge in this case.

4. Further reports will follow asthey come to hand.

Postscript (10/26/78)

Further to my preliminary report, Ihave enclosed a series of clippingswhich speak for themselves.

1. The search for the plane in BassStrait was called off as of yesterday,Wednesday, 10/25/78. The pilot andplane have been missing since Saturdaynight, October 21, 1978. No trace hasbeen found. An oil slick found near thepresumed site of the last conversationwith Frederick Valentich, had beensampled on Monday, 23rd October, butas yet no word has been forthcoming onwhether it was aviation fuel.

2. Subsequent developments havemade the suggestion of acutedisorientation unlikely, and cannot beconsidered as a reasonable explanationfor the UFO report.

3. Therefore we have 2 probableoptions:(a) The UFO report was apparentlygenuine; Valentich was described assomebody who "lived for flying" and it isunlikely that under the circumstanceshe would have done anything to affect

-his chances in improving his flyingstatus. In fact he was flying to KingIsland to log up more night flying hoursand to pick up crayfish. If the UFOencounter is factual, then suggestionsof an "abduction" are unfounded. Lesscritically-minded "UFOlogists" havealready suggested the possibility in themedia. Valentich's father has beenquoted as speculating about this, but itseems likely that to suspect this, is

(continued on next page)

Page 5: MUFON UFO Journal - 1978 8. August

more acceptable to him thenconfronting the possibility that his son'splane went down into the straits. It isnot the first time a plane may have gonedown in that area without trace.Although Valentich's voice throughoutthe alleged "UFO transmission" wasa p p a r e n t l y c a l m , t h e f i n a lcircumstances could have precipitatedeither the plane crashing into the sea ora collision. An overt act of hostility hasno foundation on evidence so faravailable. ,

(b) The possibility of a hoax cannot beruled out entirely and must be aconsideration, if Valentich turns upalive and well. While this possibility isbecoming increasingly less likely,.astime goes by it must still be regarded.Valentich has been quoted as having aninterest in the subject, perhapsstimulated by an earlier sighting heapparently had, but with the advent of"CE3K" etc., such material cannot bereasonably held against any apparentvalidity of the Bass Strait incident.

The lack of radar confirmation, while intially being bandied about asevidence for the plane being elsewhere, other than where the plane was thoughtto be, has been eliminated, since, officials have stated he was not- beingtracked. However a report of a lightplane landing under "mysteriouscircumstances" just after the allegedUFO encounter, has yet to beconfirmed. .

Unless we have an "interruptedjourney" on our hands (and there is noevidence for such a speculation at thispoint), the continuing absence ofValentich and the Cessna plane willcontinue to make the scenario of a hoax(or a bizarre suicide for that matter)increasingly more unlikely. While thereare few things in common, this casereminds me of the Travis Walton affair, thus it is only time that will resolve theaffair.

4. Unless there are furtherdramatic developments in this case, Iwill forward a detailed report at the endof 2 weeks, a period of time, which willhopefully allow some resolution to thewhole affair. -- Bill Chalker, DirectorUFO Research (NSW), 10/26/78

SIGHTING BACKGROUND:On Sunday evening, 27 August

1978,1 received a telephone call from awitness to a UFO sighting — Privateaircraft pilot, Arthur Silva (55), PinetreeDrive, S. Hamilton, MA. Silva told methat he and companion Harold Johnson(62), 85 Perkins Ave., S. Hamilton, MA,had sighted a strange, whitish-silverwingless oval object from an aircraftflying near Cap^e Cod, MA, severalhours ago. Silva was aware of myinterest because of local media publicityafforded me from time-to-time re:UFOs. Interestingly enough, I had alsoreceived word of another daylight UFOsighting from Cape Ann, MA, whichhad taken place 3 hours later.(Reference MUFON MASS 78-9/Fowler 78-34). I arranged an interviewwith both witnesses on the evening of29 October 1978, at the "FamilyLounge," 374 Rantoul Street, Beverly,MA, a business owned by Silva.

(Editor's Note: Late wire servicereports quote the missing pilot's younggirlfriend as saying the family "knows"he is alive, and refer to confidentialmeetings held with the authorities. Afollow-up report will appear in the nextissue.)

SIGHTING ACCOUNT:The witnesses had taken off in

Silva's Cessna .150 from BeverlyAirport, MA, shortly after 1:00 PM on27 August 1978. The Cessna wasplaced on a SSE heading out over theocean and headed toward theProvincetown, MA, airport located onthe tip of Cape Cod, MA. The purposeof the flight was sightseeing andamateur aerial photography by Silva. The Cessna 150 (N5907G) carried at r a n s p o n d e r and was u n d e rsurveillance/control of. the FAA ATCTower, Logan International Airport,Boston, MA. Communication by radiowas maintained by radio frequency,120.6 MHz. National Weather Servicerecords read that visibility was 15 mileswith thin scattered clouds at. 25,000feet. The wind was from the ESE (130degrees) at 10 knots.

Shortly after takeoff, ATC warnedSilva of traffic near him at his 8 o'clockposition. Silva replied that he had notraffic in sight. The ATC advised Silvathat the traffic was not responding totheir radio calls. The ATC surveillanceradar did not record altitude so it was•assumed the traffic was at a differentaltitude and posed no danger. Silvacontinued on a dead SSE heading.

... At approximately 1340 EDT, Silvaand Johnson noticed a bright reflectiveobject about an estimated 4 milesdirectly ahead of them. It appeared tobe at their same altitude of 2,500 feet. They assumed it to be another airplanereflecting sunlight. As it drew closer, itbecame darker in color and a vagueoutline could be seen. No wings couldbe seen and it was assumed it was ahelicopter. Suddenly, the object pickedup • speed travelling . faster than . ahelicopter. For a moment it appeared.as if it were heading directly at them andSilva wondered why ATC was notwarning him. The craft shot by theCessna's 3 o'clock position at anestimated 600 mph. Silva and Johnsonturned around to see more of it butobstructing ribbing blocked their view.

The object appeared to be a silverywhite metallic-appearing sphere. Itlooked as if it were constructed fromburnished aluminum. Its closure angle

(continued on next page) 5

(Radar Case, continued)was so slim that Silva felt it missed themby about 1,000 feet. At that distance,Silva estimated its size as being about18 feet in diameter. Johnson had theimpression that it could have been anupended silver disc, some of whichseemed translucent. He also thought hehad seen a light blue color associatedwith the trailing end of the object. Itsfast approach took them so completelyby surprise that Silva did not even thinkto reach for a loaded camera locatedbehind his seat. Instead, he instinctivelyreached for his mike and queried ATCat Boston about what had just streakedby him. Boston ATC radio'd back thatradar had shown traffic just passed him. Both witnesses decided not to tell ATCwhat they had seen. They continuedtheir flight, took photographs, landed atProvincetown but took right off againwithout leaving the aircraft. Theyreturned to Beverly Airport and landedabout 1430 EDT.

SIGHTING INVESTIGATIONActivity Log27 Aug. 1978 - I phoned FAA ATC

Center, Nashua, N.H.,and talked to WatchSupervisor , JohnMullin about the CapeCod (and Cape Ann)UFO sightings. Noth-ing unusual was notedon the sector log.Mullin advised me totalk with the BostonATC, Logan Airport,Boston, MA, as theywould have beentracking the Cessna150 on their radar.

28 Aug. 1978 — I phoned FAA ATCTower, Logan Airport, regarding the UFOreport. Watch Super-visor, Dan Doherty, identified the pertinentATC radar operator asbeing a Peter Dibsburyand said he wouldarrange a telephoneinterview with him forme on Thursday, 31October 1978.

6

29 Aug. 1978 — I interviewed bothwitnesses separately inan apartment abovethe "Family Lounge,"374 Rantoul Street,Beverly, MA. MUFONForm 1's were filled outand signed and a taperecording was made ofmy interviews. Iphoned Alan Water-man, 65 HowardStreet, Hamilton, MA,who was f o r m e rsupervisor to witnessHarold Johnson for acharacter referencecheck.

31 Aug. 1978 — I interviewed pertinentFAA ATC operator,Peter Dibsbury, at 1520EDT. Dibsbury wouldonly acknowledgeworking an aircraft inthe Cape Cod area andhaving some sort ofdifficulty. He said thathe remembered be-cause it was unusual forhim to be workingaircraft that far awayfrom Boston. Usually, aircraft are taken overby Otis AFB ATC. Hecould not rememberany of the conversationhe had with Silva as itwas a real busy timethat Sunday afternoon.

2 Sept. 1978 — I secured a marked-upSectional AeronauticalChart f rom Silvadenoting the CessnaISO's estimated po-sition during the UFOsighting.

8 Sept. 1978 — I phoned the NationalWeather Service forthe recorded weatherduring the sightingdate/time/place. Iphoned the Chatham,MA Weather Stationfor weather balloonlaunch data for the

sighting date/time/place. I phoned OtisApproach Control, andHyannis Tower. Noth-ing unusual was notedon their logs for thedate/time of the UFOsighting. I phoned ATCat Logan again andasked W.S. RayZazzetti how to obtaina cassette recording ofthe conve r sa t ionbetween ATC andSilva. He referred me toFAA District Head-quarters, EvaluationBranch, and there Ispoke to RobertPinnock. He advisedme to request the datafrom the Dristrict ATCChief via the Freedomof Information Act.Pinnock then called theATC Tower at LoganAirport to put a freezeon the tapes for me sothat they would not beerased. I requested thecassette tape in writing.

11 Sept. 1978-— I phoned BeverlyAirport ATC Tower toattempt to get exacttake-off/landing timesof Silva. They did nothave such recordsexcept for IFR flights.I phoned a former FAAemployee/pilot who isin the position to checkout Silva's characterfor me via other pilotsat Beverly Airport.

12 Sept. 1978-—I phoned/asked Silvafor a character refer-ence. He referred me toA i n a r B u r g b y , apilot/fish-spotter.

16 Sept. 1978 _ I conduc ted acharacter check ofArthur Silva with Mr.Ainar Burgby.

Page 7: MUFON UFO Journal - 1978 8. August

Interview and InterrogationI arrived at "Family Lounge" at

1915 EOT. The lounge is abar/restaurant. It was very noisy so Iconducted my interview in anapartment over the Lounge which isoccupied by Silva's son. Silva was verymatter-of-fact and straightforwardabout his experience. My impressionwas that he was giving me a factualaccount of what had occurred.Johnson showed up later and Iinterviewed him. Both filled out Form1's. Johnson kept emphasizing that hedid not know what he saw but he saw it.He is not a pilot and was hardly atrained observer as he would offer noestimates of size or distance, just the.configuration and appearance of theobject. He did conf i rm thecircumstances under which the sightingoccurred as reported by Silva.

Additional Witness CheckATC Towers at Nashua, N.H.,

Otis, Hyannis and Boston, MA, werecontacted. None had unusual activitynoted on their logs. They had receivedno calls concerning UFOs. I receivedno calls from our other sources exceptfor another UFO sighting originatinglater in the day from Gloucester (CapeAnn), MA.

Natural Phenomena Check(Not Applicable)

Man-Made Object CheckThe FAA noted no unusual activity

in the area, military or otherwise. TheChatham, MA, Weather Stationinformed me that they had launchedonly the two usual weather balloons on27 August 1978. One was launched at0700 and the other at 1900 EOT. Theseare standard times.

Other PossibilitiesThe possibility is very slim that an

airplane or helicopter was mistaken forsomething unusual because bothwitnesses described essentially thesame thing. This would also apply to apossible hallucination. There does notseem to be any motive for a hoax. Thecharacter reference checks indicatethat both men are reliable.

Witness Background Check(Deleted here. Both Arthur Silva

and Harold Johnson were consideredcompetent and reliable by colleagues.--Editor.)

SIGHTING EVALUATIONThe only man-made object that

would resemble the object reportedwould be a silver-colored balloon.Harold Johnson thought that he noteda translucent portion and a light blueportion. Arthur felt that the blue was areflection of the blue sky off the object'sshiny surface. The National WeatherService recorded a 10 knot wind out ofthe ESE (130 degrees) which wouldcarry a balloon roughly in the directionthat the object; was seen moving. However, a check with the only knownballoon-launching facility in this area atChatham, MA, indicated that no suchballoon had been launched. A weatherballoon had been launched at 0700 EOTand 1800 EOT. The^withesses feltcertain that it was not a transientballoon. I thought that perhaps as theyapproached a slow-moving balloon thatthe aircraft's speed would give theimpression that the balloon wasstreaking by them. However, they feltthat the object was metallic and in acontrolled flight. It is interesting thatnothing resembling an instrumentpackage was seen and that radarpainted what appeared to be an aircraftpassing them just as the object passedthem. It is doubtful that the surveillanceradar which just barely had the aircraftwithin its range would paint such atarget if the object were a small balloon.

It is my evaluation that the objectsighted by Silva and Johnson falls intothe unknown category with a"significant" classification due to -theinvolvement of two witnesses (one, atrained observer); probable radarconfirmation and conditions of a 15 milevisibility.

Changes from the version that appeared in the symposium proceedings are noted herein. Thecases are presented in order to stimulate further investigation, not as final proof. Abstract Vm"I'm almost positive it happened in 1973,"

said my informant, a man with a long career as apilot in the military who held the rank of WarrantOfficer in the army during the early 1950's. Nowserving in the Air National Guard, he stood byme, facing a large wall map of the United States ina back room of the Administration Building atLunken Airport in Cincinnati. Earlier, in a largefront room, before about 25 pilots, I had justspoken on the subject of UFOs. It was now thelate summer of 1977 as he tried to recall the exacttime when he stood as a witness, at a distance ofabout 12 feet, peering at five crates on a fork liftinside a hangar at Wright-Patterson AFB. In eachof three crates, he said, were the recovered deadbodies of small humanoids; the contents of theother two crates were not discernible. As herelated this astonishing information in a matter-of-fact manner, he pointed vaguely to an area inArizona on the map. "Here's where itapproximately happened," he said. "It was in adesert area but I don't have the name of thelocation."

There was no one else in the map room whenhe told me about the incident. He made certain ofthat. "It's still a secret and at the time I had toswear to it." he said. "I was in the right place at theright time when the crates arrived at night by DC-7." As we stood at the map, my informantdescribed what appeared to be hastily preparedwooden crates. In these, little humanoids, appearing to be 4 feet tall were lying unshroudedon a fabric, which he explained prevented freezebum from the dry ice packed beneath. As anumber of Air Police stood silent guard nearbythe crates, he managed to get a reasonably goodbut brief glimpse of the humanoid features. Herecalls that their heads were disproportionatelylarger than the bodies, with skin that lookedbrown under the hangar lights above. The headappeared to be hairless and narrow.-The eyesseemed to be open, the mouth small, and nose, ifany, was indistinct. The humanoids' arms werepositioned down alongside their bodies, but thehands and feet, he said, were indistinct. Whenasked about their attire, he said they appeared tobe wearing tight-fitting dark suits, and, because ofthe tight-fitting suit, there was one revealingfeature — a surprising feature. One of thehumanoids appeared to him to be female. He said,"Either one of the aliens had an exceedinglymuscular chest or the bumps were a female'sbreasts." Later, he learned from one of the crewmembers, with whom he bunked at the barracks, that the body of one of the aliens was, indeed, thatof a female.

My informant also heard from the crewmember that one of the little humanoids was still

8

alive aboard the craft when the U.S. military teamarrived. Attempts were made to save its life withoxygen, but were unsuccessful. Anotherquestion, an important one, was promptlyanswered by my informant. How did the militaryknow about the crash and where to go? He saidhe heard from a crew member that the UFO waspicked up by special tracking equipment at Mt.Pafomar in California. They provided thecoordinates to the military to determine the crasharea. The retrieved craft found intact, he laterheard, was sent to Wright-Patterson. He had nomore details as to when or by what means.

Comment: There were other detailsfurnished by my informant concerning hisencounter at Wright-Patterson and on othersensitive UFO issues, that might be identifiable ortraceable to him. On his request, I have avoidedusing these data. For certain, there are a lot ofthings connected with the UFO that the publicdoes not know about.

Abstract XIWith the help of Lou Parish of MUFON I got

'the phone number of Cecil Tenney, age 78, inDelta, Colorado, and called him March 7,1978.1wanted to hear for myself his testimony relative tohis alleged observation in 1953 near Dutton,Montana, of a low-level UFO in distress, or amalfunctioning condition, and, what heexperienced during Air Force interrogation, and, what he saw at the Great Falls AFB, which hebelieved were the recovered dead alien bodies. Inthe Fall of that year, near dusk, Tenney drivingalone from Great Falls to his home in Conrad inhis pick-up, watched near the town of Dutton, thetroubled performance of a large cigar-shapedobject. Appearing to be about one-third the sizeof a football field, and about 200 feet away, thesilvery object pulsated and belched out fire andsmoke for about 7 or 8 minutes.

"It seemed to be trying to pull itself up, but itcouldn't," said Tenney. Then he described anexplosion and a swooshing sound that wasfollowed by balls of fire hitting the road and as faras he could see. Two or three cars from theopposite direction on the road, he said, had theirexhausts shooting out flames. Tenney admittedthat he was stunned and frightened by thespectable. "I got out of there in a hurry," he said,"and stopped at the nearest place with a toilet, abeer haD, which is about 5 miles beyond Dutton."There, Tenney was told by the bartender that he"smelled like lightning." Later, he learned that a

state highway patrolman who also saw the UFOin distress stopped in the saloon, and was givenTcnncy's name as a witness.

That same evening, according to Tenney, hegot a phone call from a colonel at the Great FallsAFB, about 30 miles away. In a gruff voice,Tenney was told, not asked, "I want to see yuh!"He was instructed to report to the Air Base at acertain time the next morning. When Tenneyarrived at the base, he was escorted by two meninto a jail-like, cinder block building and was led tothe colonel's office. He was grilled with questionsfor 30 minutes, then he signed a 5-copy statementwhich was also signed by a notary public.

Following interrogation, Tenney wasescorted downstairs and near the entrance doorhe encountered two military men arriving, eachcarrying a large blue bag over his shoulder. Heguessed they were laundry bags, but the bulges inthe bag did not, according to Tenney, appear tobe laundry. As Tenney moved toward the door, one of the men dropped his bag to the floor and itwas then that Tenney could recognize the bulgesto be shaped more like the protruding limbs ofbodies. At this point, he was rudely pushed out ofthe door and told, "Get the hell out of here!"

Tenney told me he returned to his flowershop in Conrad wondering about the harshtreatment he got at the base and wondering aboutthe contents of the laundry bags. Said Tenney, "Ican't swear they were bodies, but the bagscontained something they didn't want me to see."Later, Tenney heard of another witness, abrakeman on a passing train, who was knocked tothe ground by the UFO's explosion.

Comment: Tenney is the only known witnessto the event with no other names to check forback-up. However, by phone, he soundedconvincing and made no hard claims to know theanswers to the UFO's erratic or troubledbehavior, its noisy disgorging of flame and smoke, why tongues of fire shot out of automobileexhaust pipes, what the highway patrolmanreported to the Air Force, or why the colonel wasso demanding and the escorts so rude, and whatwas inside the laundry bags that was so secret.Tenney's guess was that the UFO he had seen indistress had crashed and the bags contained itsdead occupants.

Abstract XDMrs. G. worked in the Foreign Materials

Division with a top security clearance rating atWright-Patterson AFB in the I94ffs and 1950's,before her retirement in 1959 for health reasons.Charles Wilhelm, who has provided me withsome first-hand reports from people with

information about UFO retrieval or relatedincidents, got this one from Mrs. G. in 1959. Shehad known Charles very well as a teenager on twocounts: he was a good, honest worker inperforming yardwork for her, and for his intenseinterest in UFOs. When she developed cancer, and knew of her impending death, she decided torelate to him some startling information about hersecret duties at Wright-Patterson and what shesaw in the performances of these duties.

In 1955, according to Wilhelm, she wasassigned to a post to catalogue all incoming UFOmaterial, during which time approximately 1,000items were processed. These included items fromthe interior of a recovered UFO brought to the airbase. All items were photographed and tagged. Inher cataloguing duties, Mrs. G. also was witnessto the conveyance, by cart, of two dead humanoidbodies from one room to another. The bodies, preserved in chemicals, were 4 to 5 feet tall, hadgenerally human features except that the headswere large relative to their bodies, and their eyeswere slanted. There was no word as to whether ornot the bodies were brought in from a recentcrash or had been at the base morgue from anincident occurring in previous years. After tellingCharles Wilhelm some' of the barest facts.sheknew, she commented, "Uncle Sam can't doanything to me once I'm in my grave." Six monthslater Mrs. G. passed away.

Comment: The brief, but vital facts bared inthe testimony of Mrs. G. are not to be

underestimated.. I firmly believe in CharlesWilhelm, and he, in turn, believed Mrs. G.Wilhelm told me he saw Mrs. G's Wright-Patterson AFB ID badge prior to her death.

Abstract XmThe late James Mitchell was formerly a Navy

specialist who served at an air station in Dallas,Texas, where his duties included the handling ofconfidential film. After retirement from the Navyin 1966; he became a civil service electrician atWright-Patterson AFB, holding Top Secretclearance allowing.him to work in high securityareas on the base: In 1977, in association with myregular employment, I met one of the sons ofJames Mitchell. Knowing of my research, hecame to my office to relate an incident involvinghis father with base security for having possessionof a photograph which showed a small alienhumanoid allegedly killed following a skirmishwith U.S. military, forces in Arizona. According tomy informant, he was away from home at collegeat the time his father brought the photo homefrom .Wright-Patterson in 1966. However, hisbrother, Mike, who now lives in California, was athome at that time and was shown the photo by hisfather.

In due course, my business associatereached his brother, Mike, by phone and askedhim to describe the photo and also to commenton his father's actions at that time. Mike obliginglydescribed the photo as an 8 x 10, black and whiteglossy, showing two men, one wearing khaki, the

other in a lab coat, holding up a dead body about3% feet tall. The photo was taken at a fair distanceon a clear day in a panorama of desert showingpatchy scrub vegetation. Most of the details wereby now hazy to Mike, but he recalls that the alien'shead was pear-shaped and oversized for its body, with slits for eyes and mouth. He also remembersthat the humanoid was wearing a dull, wrinkled, metallic suit. Mike, in recalling the actions of hisfather, said that he had come home from workand seemed excited as he flashed the photo athim, made a sly glance, and then put it away undersome papers in his dresser drawer. He also recallsthat he said, "I can't keep it. I must take it back."

Later in the evening, according to Mike, hisfather confided that he knew the story connectedwith the photo. He said that during early morningmilitary exercises in a desert area of Arizona, aunit encountered a group of aliens near a landedcraft. There was probably a skirmish and onealien put up quite a fight. Subdued, the smallcreature was given a sedative, by injection, whichcaused its death. The story goes that the othermembers of the "Third Kind", escaped into theircraft and flew away. The one dead bodysupposedly was shipped to Wright-Patterson,preserved in dry ice. The next day, Mike said, hisfather seemed greatly disturbed. Something hadhappened at the base concerning the photo. Heremembers that he had to return it and from thatday' on, James Mitchell refused to discuss thephoto again with anyone.

unable to establish the vintage of the photo or thestory of the skirmish. On the other hand, thephoto may be genuine, but the story not.Nonetheless, the borrowed photo, according toMike's recollection, had caused some concern atWright-Patterson and may have resulted in someform of reprimand for his father. Such actionswould not have occurred 'had themisappropriated photo been a fake. Now, we mayask what about the skirmish?

Abstract XIVRobert D. Barry, fellow researcher and

lecturer, was contacted early in March, 1978, onthe basis of his interest in and knowledge ofcrashed UFOs and the retrievals of craft and theiroccupants. Barry, a dedicated researcher since1957, is director of the 20th Century UFOBureau. When I informed him that I could use hishelp in supplying some data for a paper I waspreparing for the MUFON Symposium, he askedthat I submit a letter to further identify myself andmy objectives in this sensitive area. I did sopromptly, and it produced positive results.

Barry's first letter, dated March 14, 1978,concerns a UFO crash, with occupants, occurring in 1962. I quote from it, in part, asfollows:

.. ."My sources of information on the crashedUFO subject involve quite a few but mymajor sources number four, including onewithin intelligence circles as well as ascientist. As it relates to the crashed UFO of1962, it occurred in the state of New Mexico. The craft experienced flight difficulty at atime it was being tracked on military radar. Itwas tracked across two southwestern statesbefore coming in over New Mexico. Militaryjets were sent up for intercept. As the craftmoved in over the state of New Mexico, itlost altitude and continued to experienceflight difficulty. It impacted on desert sands atan estimated 90 m.p.h. Its underside hit thesand as a plane coming in for a landing. Itslanding gear was not down and its flightpattern at impact gave the indication that thetwo occupants in the craft were evidentlydead at the time of the crash...hence theflight difficulty experienced by the craft."The craft was 68 feet in diameter and 13 feet

in height...typically circular. The two.beingsdiscovered inside the craft were 42 inches each inheight. Each being was donned in a one-piecespace suit that contained no buttons or zippers. The occupants were removed the following dayafter impact to a major medical university hospitalin the U.S. where skin tests and other scientificanalyses were performed. Skin color was gray-gray pink. Head slightly larger for the size of thebody; eyes somewhat larger than norm but thenose was small with little protrusions...no earlobes, but a hole at each side of the head where wehave ears...then, of course, inside the hole areawas the inner ear portion. Mouth very small andthin lips.

"The circular-shaped space craft wasdescribed as exploratory and was removed to amajor military base in the southwest wherescientists and engineers were assigned to work on

10

the craft in an attempt to discover its power ofpropulsion. On this particular case, a total oftwenty individuals were involved in theinvestigation and research. Since that time, threeof them have died...of natural causes...leaving atotal of 17 familiar with the incident and follow-upresearch." ,

Comment: There is more and stronger dataconcerning the 1962 New Mexico crash which arenot publishable at this writing. Barry also has datarelative to other UFO crashes in the continentalUnited States from a reliable Intelligence sourcethat I have been asked not to divulge. The 1962crash site was near Holloman AFB in NewMexico. The incident is known by an astronaut.

Abstract XVMy information comes second-hand from a

person who requests that his name not be used inany way concerning his knowledge of retrievedUFOs, and the preserved alien bodies maintainedin secret storage at Wright-Patterson AFB. Thisperson, who has read by book, SITUATIONRED, is aware of my position in research but

. refuses to discuss what he knows with me byphone or in person. My first-hand informant is hisson with whom he had shared some generalinformation about UFOs a couple of years ealierTo elaborate further, the young man's father gothis UFO input from his .cousin, an Air ForceMajor who was specifically assigned to a UFOproject for about 5 years at Wright-Patterson.The major was formerly a pilot and had alsoserved at a missile site overseas and presently isassigned to a new technical duty. I do have theselatter details, but was asked not to be specific.

So significant was the information receivedby the father from the Major that .he feltcompelled to write down some specific details 'about the retrieved UFOs and the humanoidswhich he sealed in an envelope and placed in hissafety deposit box. His instructions were that theenvelope was not to be opened until after hisdeath. Some of the general information known tomy informant concerns Wright-Patterson'sstorage of an intact UFO, and parts of damagedUFOs, and the preservation of dead alien bodiesunder glass in special refrigerated conditions. TheMajor also reportedly said, "We have the proofthat UFOs are extraterrestrial."

Comment: My informant is not kiddingabout his father's UFO notes being stored in asafety deposit box. He also is not kidding abouthis father's staunch reluctance to discuss with methe contents of his notes. Personally, I must agreewith the father's position of keeping a trust whenit concerns the status and welfare of a closerelative.

Abstract XVIMrs, S.I. called me August 3,1977, to relate

her growing interest in the UFO. She had read mybook, SITUATION RED, and expressed a desireto attend the future meetings of the localOUFOtt. research group. To its director, CharlesWilhelm, she confided that her husband, Carl, while in the Air Force as a member of the AirPolice at Wright-Patterson, was called to duty one

night to stand guard in a Secret area where hewitnessed three dead alien bodies that had justarrived. I was tipped off about this information byWilhelm, so on August 3rd I was prepared to asksome careful questions.

During our first chat I was able to extractsome strong data. She explained that shebelieved that it was the year 1973 when Carl wascalled to duty during the night. He was driven to acertain location, then was blindfolded. She said herecalled that he was led across a field of wet grass, then was helped down a flight of stairs andescorted through a long corridor. At a certainpoint, he was halted and his blindfold wasremoved. There he was issued instructions abouthis mission and where to stand guard. To hisshock, he was in a room with other rankingofficers and a few scientists who were viewingthree small humanoid bodies. They were deadand were stretched out on a refrigerated table. She remembers Carl telling her that the bodieswere about 3 feet tall, their heads wereabnormally large and they seemed to have a shortfuzz on the top of their heads. The skin, she said, was an off-white or cream. She could recall noother facial features described by Carl, admittingthat the only time Carl had talked about hisexperience was while they were courting. Thatwas in 1975. At that time, she said, he seemedshaken by it.

"I believe he was dramatically effected," shesaid, adding, "One time he told his sister about itand she just laughed. Since then, he refuses todiscuss the matter with anyone, even me." Onseveral later occasions when I called Mrs. S.I., Iasked to speak to Carl. One night he was present, sitting at a table drinking coffee, when I called. Iremember she asked him if he would be willing totalk with me about his experience but he declined.Said S.I. when she returned to the phone, "Hesaid he's not allowed to talk about it, and that hewill tell everything he knows after PresidentCarter makes an announcement."

In the Fall of 1977, Mrs. S.I. became soobsessed in her UFO pursuits that she became ill, followed by a long period when she did notcommunicate. Then one evening she called andpolitely announced that she had abandoned herinterest in UFOs. She thanked me for my offers tohelp during her period of stress and againreminded me that Carl would not talk about hisaffair at Wright-Patterson.

Comment: No one can blame Carl forupholding his swom oath to secrecy, but a slip ofhis tongue with his loved one let the proverbial catout of the bag. I believe that the informationrecounted by his wife is fairly accurate. Of specialinterest in this incident of retrieval is the year 1973which suggests that the recovery of alienoccupants from crashed UFOs are still being sentto Wright-Patterson for analysis andpreservation. ,

Abstract XVHIOn April 7, 1978, Steve Tom, NBC radio

newsman, Chicago, and I were linked up by

(Retrievals, continued)phone for an interview with a former Air ForceIntelligence Officer, Major J.M. residing inHouma, Louisiana. Major J.M., I learned, sharedsome common grounds with me. He had alsoserved in the 5th Air Force in the Pacific Theatreduring World War D, and had been'in severalcombat areas such as Leyte, Phillipine Island, where I had been assigned. The purpose of our-call was to obtain first hand, the major's role in theretrieval of an alleged crashed UFO northwest ofRoswell, New Mexico, in the summer of 1947.

The debris of an apparent metallic aerialdevice, or craft, that had exploded in the air orcrashed, was first made known by a sheeprancher who found fragments of metal and othermaterial on his 8,000 acre property. When heinformed the Air Force base in Roswell of hisdiscovery, Major J.M. and aides were dispatchedto the area for investigation. There he found manymetal fragments and what appeared to be"parchment" strewn in a 1 square mile area. "Themetal fragments," said the Major, "varied in sizeup to 6 inches in length, but were of the thicknessof tinfoil. The fragments were unusual," hecontinued, "because they were of great strength. They could not be bent or broken, no matter whatpressure we applied'by hand."

The area was thoroughly checked, he said, but no fresh impact depressions in the sand werefound. The -area was not radioactive. Thefragments, he added, were transported by amilitary carry-all to the air base in Roswell andfrom that point he was instructed by GeneralRamey to deliver the "hardware" to Ft. Worth, tobe forwarded to Wright-Patterson Field foranalysis. When the press learned of this retrievaloperation, and wanted a story, Major J.M. stated,"To get them off my back I told them we wererecovering a downed weather balloon." When themajor was asked for his opinion as to theidentification of the fragments he was certainthey were not from a balloon, aircraft, or rocket. He said because of his technical background hewas certain that the metal and "parchment" werenot a part of any military aerial device known atthat time.

Comment: The retrieval of "unusual"fragments in secrecy suggests they were a part ofan unknown aerial device or craft. Manned, ornot, the major did not know. If there were entitiesaboard no evidence was found. Had there beenany bodies aboard they would have beendestroyed in what appeared to be an aerialexplosion. It is significant to note in this instance, the year 1947 — the year of the first great wave ofUFO reports. Also the area of this retrieval was inthe path of some of the green fireball phenomenaobserved from 1947 to 1948.

Abstract XDCFollowing my lecture April 6,1978, before the

World Wings Association, a gathering of 50 ormore pilots, I was approached by a highlyreputable member of the association who knew ofa "person at work" who, in turn, knew aboutcrashed UFOs and occupants. I promptly got intouch. On April 18,1978,1 talked with former AirForce Sergeant M.S. of the 97th Bomber Wing.He was prepared to relate the data from a high

Intelligence source relative to the retrieval of analien craft and humanoid occupants maintainedat Wright-Patterson AFB. He also related asobering story about a landing on an air forcebase, also.from the same high source.

M.S., while serving-at Wright-Patterson in1977, made close acquaintance with a MajorGeneral whose last name begins with the letter"T", who was assigned at Wright-Patterson fortop security work in the Logistics Command. Hisrank and the nature of his work entitled Kim to aplane at his disposal at all times. The General'sdaughter (name known to me) and M.S. wereseriously lovelorn, and on that basis werefrequently together. This allowed M.S. to be theguest at the General's home where he and thegeneral had private chats. Both being endowedwith the highest security ratings, they discussedUFOs. From General "T", my informant related, details were disclosed concerning a UFO that hadcrashed in the southwest region of the UnitedStates in 1957. At that time, General "T" was Lt.Colonel "T". According to the General, radar hadconfirmed that an alien craft had crossed theskies over the United States at great speed. It wastracked to the point of its crash. The area, as inmost cases', was'"roped off" and the NationalGuard summoned (with canines) for maximumsecurity.

From the damaged craft, four humanoidbodies were recovered with great difficultybecause of the inability to penetrate the craft'smetal structure. The bodies were found badlyburned, some parts so severely, that certainfeatures were indistinguishable. However, thesuits they wore — appearing silver — were not

. damaged by the obvious intense heat enduredinside the craft. Said the General, "The suits werefused to the flesh." M.S. said, according to theGeneral, the four bodies, approximately 5 feet inheight, were sent to Wright-Patterson AFB whereGeneral "T" had seen them in a. deep freezemorgue, kept at approximately 120 degreesbelow zero for preservation. The only otheranatomical feature described by General "T" wasthat the heads of the aliens were, by humanstandards, larger proportionately -than thebodies. Facial features were erased by the heatfactor.

The craft? The General related thatscientists assigned to the task of dismantling it raninto difficulty. To get inside they concentrated inah area where a fissure or crack had resulted, probably from impact. Shipment to Wright-Patterson, said the General, "Was by rail, usingtwo military conveyance rocket cars, properlycamouflaged and classified as 'rockets'."

On another: occasion, M.S. as a guest ofGeneral "T" at his home, while alone, was showna Top Secret document concerning a landedUFO. The incident occurred at Nellis AFB,Nevada, in 1968, and M.S. expressed disbeliefwhen he read the report. -Stamped TOPSECRET, it read, in part: Large UFO hoveredover Nellis AFB for 3 days. Three small alien craftwere observed separating (or being ejected) fromparent craft. One landed on the air base grounds.Sent to greet the landed craft was a Colonel withsecurity detachment properly armed. There wasno mention of attempt to assault the craft. While

waiting for a sign of intent, a humanoid wasobserved to disembark from the craft, which wasdescribed as "short and.stocky". Then a beam oflight was directed at the Colonel. The Colonelwas instantly paralyzed, according to the report.Orders, then came from the officer next incommand for his troops of the securitydetachment to fire, but their weapons weremysteriously jammed. The Colonel wasrecovered and hospitalized. The only recall by theColonel, as M.S. remembers from the report, wasthat he could rationalize the event only in terms ofmathematics as though an attempt atcommunication was conducted in this manner. The UFO was observed to retreat to its parentcraft and then departed.

Commenf: I made a check on General "T" atWright-Patterson. They had no entry on hissecret assignment there, however, a check atanother base through the Accounting andFinance Section, confirmed his existence. Noaddress was released on grounds of the PrivacyAct. However, M.S. knows where the Generalwas to make his residence after retirement.Making a further check on the authenticity of theGeneral and his knowledge of secret UFOreports, I .checked with another Intelligencesource and obtained additional corroborativeinformation concerning the Nellis AFB incident.

Abstract XX"Your book, SITUATION RED, The UFO

Siege, really did it," said A.K., calling me fromCalifornia on June 19,1978. "It convinced me thatI should tell my story to you about a UFO thatlanded or had maybe crashed at Ft. Riley,Kansas." Needless to say, I was receptive to hearA.K.'s story. He, of course, asked to keep hisname confidential because he recalled a general'swarning, who was on the scene of the landing, that he would have his "expletives" shot off if hetalked.

The incident occurred on a crisp, cold nightin November 1964. (Later documentation pinneddown the date as December 10,1964,-Editor) At2:00 AM, A.K., a Pfc on guard duty at the MotorPool, and three other Army personnel of the 1st•Division on regular guard duty, were summonedby the officer of the day, Lt. H., to join him byvehicle to a remote area on the base described asa training area in Camp Forsyte, which is part ofthe Ft. Riley complex On departure to this area,he was issued an extra clip for his M14 rifle. "I wasscared," admitted A.K. "In fact, I'm tremblingright now as I'm telling you this." I told A.K. that Iwas aware of a number of UFO landings andcrashes on or near military installations and thathe.could trust me regarding the confidentiality ofhis name.

After driving a good distance, Lt. H. parkedhis vehicle alongside the road. He, A.K. and theother guards were ordered to hike about a halfmile across an open flat field. Before him, A.K.watched the searchlite beam from an overheadHuey helicopter playing down on the field. It wasfocused on a large round object resting on theground. Pfc A.K. and his comrades stood inshock. He remembers he shouted, "God damn, a

(Retrievals, continued)Flying Saucer!" Already on the scene were about10 Army personnel of various ranks, including aMajor General. Promptly, A.K. was asked for hisID and given a direct order by the General topatrol the grounded craft by circling around it andto "shoot anyone if they tried to force their way tothe craft." At this time Pfc A.K. was sharplyadmonished about keeping the incident secret.Comments A.K., "When I was in the Army, whena General told you something, you obeyed!"

The lone Huey chopper continously flewoverhead while certain personnel on handchecked the object with instruments, andmaintained communication by field radio withhead phones. Nearby a 5-ton truck was parkedwith lights off. On two occasions the Hueychopper flew over parts of the field, said A.K., asthough looking for other evidence. When theHuey was away, a "deathly quiet" prevailed, hesaid, "It was eerie!" A.K. said that on severaloccasions during his 2% hours of guard duty, hegot close to the metallic craft. "The air was muchwarmer when I got close," he said. The groundedUFO, which had impacted into the soil and stoodat a tilt, was approximately 35 to 48 feet indiameter and 12 to 18 feet in height. It wasperfectly round, shaped like a hamburger bun. Inthe middle, or at the equator, of its smoothaluminum-like surface, was a black band made up'of squares, each jutting out about 10 inches. A.K.could not determine if the squares were windowsor what purpose they served. The only protrudingpart on the UFO, said A.K., was a fin-like deviceand beneath it an aperture which may have beenan exhaust unit.

A.K. said the UFO was not lighted; he sensedno vibrations from its power system and smelledno odors. "It was dead," he said. Asked aboutrecovery of occupants from the craft, he replied,"Sorry to disappoint you, but I was not aware ofany life inside the craft, or if any bodies were takenout of it later." The next morning, said A.K., "Ihad a headache, but this was probably caused bythe excitement and fatigue.

A.K. said he heard from other sources on theArmy base that UFOs were sighted in the areaprior to the landing. He recalls no details. On myrequest, he sent me two drawings of the groundedUFO showing rear and front views. The drawingsalso show the Huey helicopter hovering over theUFO, which are used as Exhibits A and B of thisabstract.

Comments: Pfc A.K. was unable todetermine if the UFO had crashed or landed, butfrom his observation of the craft for 2% hours, hebelieved that it had probably malfunctioned and.was immobilized. He was unable to learn moredetails about the incident from the local militarybase and too frightened by the General's threatsto bring the matter up. With the presence of ahelicopter and a large truck, it is my belief that thecraft was hauled away in secrecy and perhapswith it, the occupants. I checked further with anIntelligence source who was "aware" of thisincident. Since my phone conversation with A.K.I have received a tape from him recording hisexperience, and a signed letter. The tape (Exhibit

C) is available for public hearing during theMUFON Symposium today. (The tape wasplayed for the audience.-Editor)

Abstract XXIOn June 29, 1978, my son-in-law Jeffrey

Sparks, Assistant Professor of Theater Arts at St.Leo's College, Dade City, Florida, informed methat he had talked with a person who.hadwitnessed the alien humanoids at Wright-Patterson AFB in 1966. According to my son-in-law, his contact holds a responsible position in afinancial capacity with a private firm in Tampa, and had formerly served in Military Intelligence. He gave me the individual's name and where hecould be reached.

On July 5, 1978, I talked with Mr. J.K. atlength concerning his functions in militaryIntelligence, what he had observed at Wright-Patterson, and many other aspects of crashedalien craft. He also made reference to thecomputer bank, or "dump file," which containssecret information about UFOs dating back to1948. J.K., who served in Nike Missile AirIntelligence (ADCAP), related to me, thefollowing data:

(1) He observed nine deceased alienbodies preserved in deep freeze conditionsunder well-lighted, thick glass enclosures. The bodies were short in stature, about 4 feetin height. They appeared, under the lighting,to be of grayish color in skintone. The.research area, where the bodies were

. preserved, was under heavy guard, insideand out. He was told while viewing thesubjects that 30 bodies were held inpreservation at that time at the air base.

(2) He did not see, firsthand, alien craftstored at Wright-Patterson, but was told thatsuch craft were on the base. He was also toldthat an alien craft was held at Langley AFBand another at McDill AFB in Florida.

(3) He knew of three key areas in the1%0's where certain secret UFO operationswere conducted other than at Wright-Patterson AFB. Bases cited were Langley,Avon Bombing Range — a part of the McDillAFB complex near Sebring, Florida, and atSeymour-Johnson, a Navy Training Centerin Norfolk, Virginia. :

(4) At certain military bases, highlytrained mobilized units were in a constant"ready" state for dispatch to any area in theU.S.A. to recover downed or crashed UFOs.

(5) During the Vietnam crisis, duringJ.K.'s tenure of service (1966-1968), fivecrashes of UFOs occurred in the Tri-Statearea of Ohio, Indiana; and Kentucky. Therewas one known incident of a retrieval of threealien bodies. During this latter incident thereoccurred an alleged shooting of the alienforces by our military units. This wastriggered by the uncertainty of the aliens'intent. Hostility was presumed, said J.K. Thelocation or time of these incidents were notdisclosed.

(6) Said J.K.: "Since 1948, secretinformation concerning UFO activity

involving the U.S. military has beencontained in a computer center at Wright-Patterson. At this base, a master file, writtenin computer language, is maintained, withduplicate support backup files secreted atother military installations." Said J.K.: "Getthe complete 'file dump', both the master andthe support backup files, and you've got allthe hidden UFO data."

Comment: Obviously, the UFO filesavailable to the public at the National Archives inWashington, D.C., do not reveal the hard factsregarding UFO military cases. Concerning J.K.'sdisclosure relative to military units subject todispatch to UFO retrieval areas, I have beenaware from other military sources that specialforces have been maintained for emergencysituations such as UFO retrievals or otherconditions, including riots, etc. These specialforces, known as "Blue Berets," can operatesecretly and effectively by using "diversionarytactics" to prevent public interference. Suchdiversions include creating power blackouts.

Abstract XXIIThis abstract concerns limited biological

data, with Exhibits A & B, describing the alienhumanoids, according to reliable informants, heldin cryogenic preservation at Wright-PattersonAFB and at certain medical institutions in theU.S.A. where special examinations wereconducted. Because this information treats asensitive area within the framework of secrecy, names of the medical centers, the identity of theinformants will not be disclosed at this time. Datamentioned in a number of the previous abstractshave been correlated by me to establish only ageneral anatomical configuration of the alienbeings. Needless to say, the general features ofthe alien are akin to Earth's Homo sapiens; that isto say, the alien has a head, torso, arms, hands, and it is bipedal. There, the likeness ends. Fromanonymous medical and military sources thefollowing composite or general data wereobtained:

(1) The approximate height of the alienhumanoid is 3% to 4% feet tall. One sourceapproximated 5 feet.

(2) The head, by human standards, islarge, when compared with the size of thetorso and limbs. (See drawing of head,Exhibit A.)

(3) The facial features show a pair ofeyes described variously as large, sunken ordeep set, far apart or distended more thanhuman: and, slightly slanted, appearing"Oriental" or Mongoloid."

(4) No earlobes or flesh extendingbeyond apertures on each side of the head.

(5) Nose is vague. Aperture or nares areindicated with slight protuberance. One andtwo nares have been mentioned.

(6) Mouth indicated as a small "slit" orfissure. In some instances, no mouthdescribed. Mouth appears not to function asa means for communication or as orifice forfood ingestion.

(8) Hair. Some observers describe thehumanoids as hairless, some say that thepate shows a slight fuzz. Bodies aredescribed as hairless.

(9) Torso. Small and thin fits the generaldescription. In many instances the body wasobserved wearing a garment. From medicalauthorities, no comment. No abdominalnavel indicated.

(10) Arms are described as long and thinand reaching down to the knee section.

(11) Hands. Four fingers, no thumb. Two fingers appear longer than others. Some observers had seen finger nails; others .

(12) No description available of legs orfeet.

(13) Skin description is NOT green, thank you! It is gray according to mostobservers. Some claim beige, tan, brown, or

tannish or pinkish gray and one said it lookedalmost "bluish gray" under deep freezelights. In one instance, -the bodies werecharred to a dark brown.

(14) Teeth unknown. No data fromdental authorities.

(15) Reproductive organs. Thisbiological region is "sensitive," that is, toqualify a point, "secret". One observerclaims no male or female organs wereidentified. No genitalia. In mynonprofessional judgment, the absence ofsexual organs suggest some of the aliens, and perhaps all, do not reproduce as doHomo sapiens, or, that some of the bodiesstudied are produced perhaps by a system ofcloning or other unknown means.

Thesketch was in the possession of Leonard Stringfield and was theresult of descriptions given him by various confidential sources.I had not seen nor discussed the sketch (or the humanoid materialin general) with Len prior to our meeting on July 13-lU, 1978. Basedon other sources known to me and not to Len, the sketch appearsidentical to material I have been familiar with for quite some time.I had described the hands to my wife and two close friends in late1977 and they can confirm the accuracy of the sketch as comparedwith my description at that time. Other alien types, reportedlyvarying in range from human to moregrotesque configurations, are unknown tome. Speculatively, if these types exist, theymay have their origins in other solar systemsor have roots on different planets within onesolar system.

SummaryIt is beyond the scope of this paper to treat all

the stories and rumors of stories still emerging tothis writer, each alleging the occurrence of a UFOcrash, with or without occupants, and itssubsequent hush-hush military retrieval. As ofJuly 20,1978, for the record, I am aware of morethan 50 sources who bear information relative tothe subject of retrievals or storage of alien craft,and/or the deceased alien humanoids recoveredfrom the craft. From this number I have selected22 of these sources whose testimony is reviewedin this paper, Most others lack sufficient data anda few have "dried up" so to speak, out of fear of

military reprisal or public ridicule.Stories of long ago and as recently as 1977

clearly show that the U.S.A. is not the onlyterritory in the world where UFOs and crews errin their tactical mission and crash to meet theirdoom. On foreign soil we have a number ofreported crashes. One allegedly occurred on theisland of Spitzbergen in 1952 which was secretlyrecovered by Norwegian military authorities.Another UFO crash and retrieval report wascontained in a special dispatch from the latecolumnist Dorothy Kilgallen, datelined May 23,1955, London, England, INS, as follows: "Britishscientists and airmen, after examining thewreckage of one mysterious flying ship, areconvinced that these strange aerial objects areflying saucers from another planet. The source ofmy information is a British official of Cabinet rank.He told me: 'We believe, on the basis of ourinquiries thus far, that the saucers were staffed bysmall men — probably under 4 feet. It'sfrightening, but there's no denying that flyingsaucers are from another planet.' This officialquoted scientists as saying a flying ship of thistype could not have been constructed on Earth. The British government, I learned, is withholdingan official report on the flying saucer examinationat this time, possibly because it does not want tofrighten the public."

Still other foreign reports in the past and ofrecent times tell of objects falling to Earth lookinglike fireballs, of objects exploding on impact. Many crashes have conventional explanations, but others do not, such as the circular craft thatallegedly crashed in Nauta, Peru, on November11,1975. This object, according to Robert Barry, measured 12 feet, 8 inches in diameter, whichfeatured a strange metallic coating. Otherreported crashes have occurred in Australia, May1976, in Mexico, August 1977, and in Bolivia, May

.1978. One report of a UFO crash with recoveredhumanoid occupants stands out above theothers. Occurring in 1953, 100 miles outside ofJohannesburg, South Africa, the incidentprompted investigation by a U.S. Air ForceGeneral. Larry Movers, MUFON State Directorfor Ohio, uncovered the case; I recently had itconfirmed from an Intelligence source. Perhapsthe most significant of the reported foreign UFOcrashes are those in the Communist world. Myinformant, Robert Barry, has learned from areliable InteUifence source that Red China hastwo "downed" UFOs, one of which landed inwater without occupants; and, two, possiblythree, crashes and retrievals in Russia.

In the U.S.A., reports of UFO crash andretrievals continue through the 1970's. Onerecent incident, for example, not yetsubstantiated, came to light from reliable sourcesnot to be named at this time as our search for datacontinues. This incident allegedly occurring in theSpring of 1977 in a rural area of SouthwesternOhio, involves a landed craft, perhaps disabled, and a number of its occupants who engaged amilitary unit dispatched to the scene. Whateverhappened during this Encounter of the ThirdKind, the sketchy data we have thus far suggestviolence. Reportedly, 11 members of the U.S.military detachment were either injured or killed.

14

There was no word of alien casualties. The storyis traceable through a handful of qualifiedresearchers, then it stops at a dead end.Unreachable is a medical specialist supposedlycalled in by the military authorities to perform hisexpertise.- _ -

Ir. the Fall of 1977, I was approached by aCincinnati researcher and told that he hadlearned from a source who worked at Wright-Patterson that in the Spring of 1977 militarypersonnel had carried into a certain area on thebase several litters with little alien bodies from anundisclosed location. Perhaps in time, new datamay appear to give credence to one or both ofthese possibly connected stories. Indeed, apitched land battle between U.S. military andalien forces seems more like fantasy, but if true, then it would be reasonable to assume that thesecrecy lid would come down hard on it! Theeffects from such a disclosure would certainlycreate more than a "cultural shock."

Still another factor that has raised somequestions concerns the geographical location ofUFO crashes. In the U.S.A., especially in the1950's, they have mainly occurred in the Westernor Southwestern desert regions where militaryexperimental installations abound. Logically, onemay ask, is the flying saucer a super-secret U.S.weapon? But the negative answers areoverwhelming. As pointed out earlier, UFOcrashes have occurred on foreign soil beyond therange of the U.S. experimental aircraft. And, asknown to all research, UFOs have repeatedlyreconnoitered U.S. and foreign militaryinstallations and other sensitive areas where theysometimes act in a menacing manner.

On the premise that humanoid aliens havebeen preserved in deep freeze conditions atWright-Patterson AFB and at several medicalcenters for research, I believe it is safe topostulate that these entities associated with theUFO are physical and are not an apparition fromanother dimension. My point here is not toderogate the extradimensional entity, for there ismuch evidence to suggest that it, too, plays a partin the UFO mystery. It is beyond the scope of thispaper to rationalize each and every kind of alienintruder during a live encounter. This subjectbelongs to my colleague, Ted Bloecher, who hasmade a scholarly study of this phase of research.

In summary, the information treated in thispaper, while it may seem provocative to themedia and to the average researcher, does not, admittedly, constitute the final proof that UFOsare of extraterrestrial origin. But, indeed, if mydata from reliable and diverse sources arereceived with an objective and unbiased mind, then the hypothesis surely is strengthened. Itseems no matter how hard we may want todisbelieve the data presented in the foregoingabstracts, it will be difficult to explain away thecorrelative physical similarities of the recoveredhumanoids. Despite my long experience in UFOresearch, I must admit that I feel a sense of humanuneasiness as vital data continues to reach mefrom responsible sources. As the pieces of thepuzzle suddenly fall into place for me, each acorroborative clue, I realize — like a smack in the

. face — that our giant Intelligence community, both military and covert agencies, have been

sitting atop a real Pandora's Box with somerighteous cause.

I am not condoning our InteDigence forcesfor their harsh and tricky actions or methods insuppressing the hidden facts for so many years, but I can now appreciate the problem they mayhave had in trying to find a reasonable way out of adilemma to relate all the sobering data to abenighted world public. How, for instance, wouldthe public react to a sudden official disclosure ofeven the scantiest details relevant to thehumanoid which I have released in this paper? And, the humanoid factor is just a small segmentin the overall sobering UFO data. And, there isstill another sensitive aspect to consider: Theintent of the UFO! It is my belief that ourIntelligence community does not know the intentof the UFO. For our government to suddenlyrelease only the known data in a majorpronouncement could pose some new societalrisks. In my opinion, to release part of the UFOstory, and be unable to define the UFO's intentcould create an even greater concern in theunpredictable public mind. Perhaps the humanmind is ready to hear the truth. Our minds havesurvived in many hot wars and a long cold warwith the threat of nuclear destruction, plus all thesocial upheavals of the 1960s and 1970s. I believewe are ready for the truth.

Who are these mortals whose imperfect crafthave crashed into the foreign soil of Earth? Fromwhat star system do they come whereevolutionary life is not too different than ourEarth's? Is there a missing link in our primevalpast, or lost in our archeological wonders whichmay reveal a human kinship? I do not profess toknow the !ocked-away secrets, or the final answerto the UFO mystery, nor do I know what othergreat secrets may be hidden with the retrievedcraft and deceased aliens. Perhaps PresidentJimmy Carter knows these secrets, or some ofthem. Thus, my plea, here and how, is addressedto the President of the United States to seriouslyreview the testimony I have recorded in thispaper. With his conscience as his guide, I trustthat the President of the United States will tell thisgreat nation and the world the truth about thegreatest story of our time.

chariots. Instead, the entities and"carriages" discussed here are littleknown, but ufologically interestingnevertheless.

Some UFOs reported by rationalwitnesses seem to be simple globes orshells, with no protuberances. Theygive no hint of any propulsion capacity, and the entities reported riding withinthem are not concerned with anyconsoles, dials, or instruments as theglobe or "bubble" maneuversintelligently above and near the earth. The three cases discussed below willattempt to correlate these objects, andwhat possible significance the entitiesborne within them might have as far asthe human race is concerned.

On August 30,1976, between 6:30and 7:00 PM, Mr. Francis de John ofPasadena, California, was strolling inhis back yard enjoying a good cigar. Ashe wrote to the Center for UFO Studies(CUFOS) later, he saw a small, clearbubble floating toward him very slowlyfrom the direction of his neighbor'syard.

"It moved in my direction veryslowly," Mr. de John wrote. "When itwas about 5 feet past me, I walked upto it... . As I looked inside, I see threelives side by side (sic)... My thought atthat time was to capture the object, butthat was before I knew it was fromanother world and that anyone wasinside.... The last I saw of it was when itmade a left-hand turn between myneighbor's house and the house next toit. This to me is a pleasant, happy andan enjoyable experience and one that Iwill never forget for as long as I live."

Investigating the case for CUFOS,I found Mr. de John to be intelligent,well-read and articulate. He is a retiredbusinessman, metaphysically inclined, and the author of a 30-page, privatelypublished booklet about man'srelationship to his Creator and other

philosophical questions. Topicscovered in the booklet range from thepurpose of creation to the reality ofreincarnation.

Mr. de John states that hisknowledge comes from an infusionprocess.akin to "grace." Whether hisphilosophical opinions do, in actuality, contain "truth", the basic facts of hisCE HI experience seem to be as "real"as any other single witness case. Theinteresting difference is the descriptionof the entities encased within the UFO.

Mr. de John stated that the UFOwas about the size of a tennis ball. It wascrystal clear and spherical, with theappearance of a soap bubble, butwithout accompanying rainbow colors. It floated with evident purpose towardhim and made complicated maneuversas it avoided obstacles in his yard. Itseemed intelligently controlled, although nothing which could beassumed to be a propulsive unit wasvisible. (See figure A.)

The three "lives" or entities hedescribed are unique in my experienceas a UFO researcher. He stated that ashe approached the object with the ideaof capturing it, he saw three specks ofdarkened matter, from which identicalred auras of varying shades emanatedoutward. They were within the object. As Mr. de John reached out toward theobject, he was imeediately stopped by amental communication cautioning,"Would you harm entities from anotherworld?" Deciding not to harm theobject, he was immediately stopped bya mental communication cautioning, watched it slowly glide into a neighbor'syard. Then it negotiated a tight left turnaround the house and was out of sight.

In spite of the unusual nature ofMr. de John's experience, it can beaccepted as coming from an honest andrational man. The fact that it does not fitinto the idea of material craft with

(California Report, continued)

humanoid occupants is not the witness'problem. It is ours.

Consider now the May 10, 1957,experience of Shirley McBride.Presently a resident of Tujunga,California, she is an intellectual andsearching individual who is deeplyinvolved in metaphysical studies. Ms.McBride, on the above date, wasdriving her car along a deserted sectionof Kern County near Lake Isabella,California. At the end of a dead endcountry road, she felt compelled to

. leave her automobile to enjoy thescenic view. She idly watched as around,' glowing bubble came into viewabove the tops of adjacent trees. It wassmall in size, not more than a few inchesin diameter, but as it floated toward herit rapidly expanded to an oval shape, approximately 6 feet across and 9 feethigh. Behind the radiant, self-contained white glow were two vagueshadows which Ms. McBride statedmust have been living entities. Theygave her a message, "Do not be afraid."(See figure B.)

The message was telepathic, butsuperfluous, for Ms. McBride wasfascinated and excited. The "bubble"floated very close to the ground just afew feet from her. She noticed "fins" onits surface which seemed composed ofthe same glowing light. The fins stoodout 4 to 6 inches from the object'sperimeter, but these gave no hint howthe object was propelled. Though theobject's path down from the sky hadbeen seemingly propelled, itsmovement at all times was tranquil andsilent.

Ms. McBride watched the objectwith curiosity and awe for someminutes. Presently, she felt withinherself that she was "intruding." Shereturned to her car and backed out ofthe dead end road. As she drove away, she saw the object still hovering nearthe ground. The experience wassomehow wiped from Ms. McBride"sconsciousness. It was only when shewas hypnotically regressed by Dr. W.C. McCall on March 24, 1976, inconnection with another two-witnessCE III encounter that the incidentabove was revealed.

Oddly, Ms. McBride seems to have16

had more communication with theshadowed "entities" within the bubblethan she is willing to reveal. Thetranscript of the tape-recordedhypnotic session is heart-rending andalmost frightening. It shows deep stressas Ms. McBride sought to keep parts ofthe contract secret, particularly thoseconcerned with a "secret" shared bythe entities and which she promisedthem that she would not reveal. It wasonly the expert skill of Dr. McCall thatallowed us to gather the facts as clearlyas we did. She staunchly resisted thesuggestion that she sould reveal thesecret, even when the hypnotistreminded her that her loyalty belongedto the human race, not aliens. The word"aliens" as applied to the visitors in thebubble incensed her. She repeatedlycontended under hypnosis that theywere not alien, but "that it was all thesame". Later she explained that in heropinion, "all life is One".

The third case is well known tomost ufologists as "the miracle atFatima". Actually, it concerns a seriesof events which took place near thesmall village of Aljustrel, Portugal, between 1915-1917. The incidentswhich correlate with the two casesdiscussed above — and with othersimilar cases which I have not space toinclude — were the repeatedappearance of a beautiful "Lady" whofive times communicated with threesmall peasant children. The Lady, whointroduced herself as being "fromHeaven", each time journeyed intosight from the east in a luminous globeof light. Hovering each time just a fewfeet from the three witnesses, thehuman-size entity was at all timesenclosed within the globe, whichthough glowing was also transparent. The entity's features, form, andgarments were extraordinarily radiant, and all seemed entirely composed oflight. :

The three children were simplepeasants but possessed a metaphysicalview of creation and man's dutiestoward a superior Being. The Ladyreatedly urged them to "pray for theconversion of sinners". We mightloosely interpret this as a philosophicalexhortation that all life should bein accord. In addition, "secrets" weregiven the witnesses, which they refused

to share even under dire threats fromvarious authorities. Some in timeturned out to be accurate predictionsconcerning World War I and II andCommunist Russia's rise to worldpower. A final secret, now in the handsof the Vatican, has not yet beenrevealed.

It seems apparent that the Ladychose those witnesses to whom sheappeared. Even though crowds ofpeople were present during the last fourappearances, she was visible only to thethree children. However, the globe inwhich she traveled was viewed by manyas it made its passages toward Aljustrelon the 13th of each month from June toOctober, 1917. Numerous witnessessaw the lighted ball hover near thechildren, viewed rainbow colors on thelandscape and the crowd, noticed adimming of the sun's light and an oddtransparency of portions of the sky. Also, many heard a'noise like a veryfaint voice, similar to the buzzing of abee, at the times when the Lady wasapparently conversing with the childwitnesses.

It is interesting, in the sketchyoutlines above, to see the contrastbetween globe-like UFOs with theirpeaceful occupants, as contrasted toother UFOs which appear ascomplicated, structured craft completewith landing gear, antennae, controlpanels, and a vast variety of frighteningand/or intimidating occupants.

The simple globes with theirentities seem to have the followingaspects in common: 1. They are visibleonly to single or selected witnesses, presumably at the will of the entitiesthemselves; 2. They are silent in transit, and their movements tranquil thoughseemingly controlled; 3. There are noevidences of propulsive units orguidance systems; 4. They are typicallycrystal clear or composed of pure whitelight; 5. The entities are of unclear form, not recognizable as normal, materialbeings; 6. Messages are given thewitnesses, some as "secrets," but allcommunications are considered by thewitnesses to be of vast importance tothe human race; 6. In all cases, thewitnesses were interested inmetaphysical knowledge and sharedthe general philosophy that "all life isOne".

CAUS TO FILE FOIA LAWSUIT AGAINST THE AIR FORCEBy W. Todd Zechel (Director of CAUS)

Citizens Against UFO Secrecy(CAUS), a nonpartisan, nonprofitorganization devoted to gaining therelease of all government-held UFOrecords and d is t r ibu t ing theinformation to the UFOlogicalcommunity, plans to file a Freedom ofInformation Act lawsuit against theU.S. Air Force. The suit will attempt toestablish that the USAF (or elementsthereof) recovered a crashed extra-ter res t r ia l spacecraf t in theTexas/Mexico border area in the late1940's.

Intent on striking while the iron ishot, CAUS hopes to file the suit beforeDecember, when the CentralIntelligence Agency is scheduled torelease a large number of documentsrelated to UFOs as a result of theGround Saucer Watch (GSW) FOIAlawsuit against the CIA. CAUS tookover management of the GSW suitearlier this year and, through discoverymotion procedure and face-to-facenegotiations, succeeded in having theCIA search all of its components forUFO-related material under astipulation ordered by the U.S. DistrictCourt, Washington, D.C.

In August, the CIA notified me thatit had located "1,000 pages of additionalmaterial related to UFOs," and was inthe process of reviewing the documentsfor releasibility. Since then, the U.S.Attorney, speaking in behalf of the CIA,has indicated upward of 10,000 UFO-related documents have been located inAgency files. At the same time, however, the CIA, responding to anFOIA request asking specifically forcrashed saucer data, indicated thatsuch data would fall under Air Forcepurview and such data would have to beobtained from the USAF.

CAUS, in fact, had already filed anFOIA request for crashed saucerrecords with theAir Force in July, listingtwo retired Air Force officers as

witnesses and/or participants in theincident. One officer is a retired USAFColonel who reportedly was in chargeof securing the area during the recoveryoperation. The Air Force has confirmedthat this individual was at the time of theincident serving as Provost Marshall(equivalent to Chief of Police) atCarswell AFB, Texas. The other officeris a retired Lt. Colonel who wasairborne at the time and was alerted tothe object's intrusion of U.S. airspaceby radio reports over his plane'sscramble frequency. Subsequently, theofficer and a fellow pilot flew down overthe Texas/Mexico border in a lightplane, searching for the impact areawhich had been plotted by radaroperators who tracked the object'ssudden disappearance off their scopes.

In August, the Air Force made apro forma denial of the existence ofrecords related to the recovery of anyextraterrestrial device. An appeal wasfiled to the Air Force denial, inaccordance with FOIA proceduralguidelines, expressing our willingnessto file an FOIA lawsuit should the denialof records be the Air Force's officialposition. .More recently, the Air Forcestated it would not accept the appeal, since, according to USAF inter-pretation of the FOIA, it had not deniedus access to records, but had insteaddenied existence of such records, inferring that its response did notrequire or make possible a suit to befiled..

Since CAUS legal consultant PeterGersten, an attorney with theprestigious New York law firm ofRothblatt, Rothblatt, Seijas and Peskin,is expected to be totally occupied withlitigation against the CIA in Decemberand January, and perhaps beyond that,CAUS has contacted a highlyrespected Washington, D.C., law firmwhose attorneys have agreed to handlethe Air Force/crashed saucer suit.

Although the attorneys would not takethe suit on a pro bono basis (withoutcharge), they did offer to handle it as apublic interest action with reduced fees. However, a retainer fee of $2,000 isrequired before the action cancommence, and additional funds will berequired as the suit progresses.

Considering the overwhelmingsuccess of the GSW suit against theCIA (I initiated the suit in behalf ofGSW and CAUS Director of ResearchBrad Sparks drafted the discoverymotion and stipulation), CAUS nowasks that the members of all UFOorganizations join together andcontribute to this unprecedented effortto settle the UFO issue in court. BothCAUS and the D.C. law firm feel thereis enough evidence to warrant a lawsuitto force disclosure of records related tothe recovery of an extraterrestrialvehicle with occupant. By compellingmilitary officers and governmentofficials to testify under oath about theirknowledge of such an incident, CAUSsubmits that the reality of UFOs will beirrefutably established. In using theFOIA lawsuit procedure, the necessityof having advocacy hearings-such asthose in the past is circumvented.Instead, there will be direct testimonyabout specific events, and no amount ofAir Force lobbying behind the sceneswill have any effect on the outcome.

The GSW suit against the CIA,about to realize almost total success, was brought about by the hard workand sacrifices of a very small group ofconcerned individuals. Charles Tuckerhelped get the suit off the ground with agenerous contribution of $1,000, andUFOlogy is forever indebted to him. BillSpaulding has supplied funds in thearea of $2,000, ensuring the suit wouldcontinue. Peter Gersten has workedhundreds of hours, often at his ownexpense, draft ing motions andcomplaints, and conducting research.

(continued on next page) \"J

Page 18: MUFON UFO Journal - 1978 8. August

(CAUS Lawsuit, continued)Yet UFOlogy in general has notresponded, even though the outcomeof the suit will have benefits for allgroups and individuals . UFOresearchers and buffs have beencontent to sit back and allow a few mento make all the effort and all thesacrifices.

While there are many theoriesregarding UFOs being espoused, andthere are obvious ideologicaldifferences between some UFO-advocate groups, CAUS submits thereis a common thread which weavesbetween us all and gives us a purpose tounite. That thread is the force whichbrought each of us to becomeinterested and involved with thesubject: the overwhelming desire andneed to know the truth, tp search outthe answers to a mystery which hassuch relevancy and significance to ourbasic existence that it occludes anyother problem. Simply filing lawsuitsagainst the government, or evenwinning these suits, won't necessarilysolve the entire UFO mystery. Even ifthe existence of a crashed saucer isproved, much work will remain, including the continued investigation ofUFO incidents. But, hopefully, ourimmediate goal will soon be reached:that goal is scientific recognition thatUFOs exist and have seriousimplications for mankind. If CAUS,with the support and assistance of theUFOlogical community, can bringabout that recognition by forcing allevidence to be released, then it willconsider its mission accomplished.

At the moment it can be said, asWinston Churchill might say it, "Neverbefore have so few accomplished somuch with so little." Your contributionsand support can change that to: "Neverbefore have so many done so much tohelp the CAUS."

Contributions may be sent c/oMUFON Journal, 4418 39th St.,Brentwood, MD 20722, specifying thefunds are to be used for the FOIAcrashed saucer lawsuit. Make checkspayable to CAUS/W. Todd Zechel.

Plans are continuing for the UFOpresentation to the Political Committeeof the United Nations in New York Cityon November 27, 1978, under theauspices of the Honorable Eric Gairy,Prime Minister of Grenada.

Even though we now have avacancy for State Director for NewMexico, we are announcing theappointment of Thad G. Fisher, 825Calle Mejia #1134, Sante Fe, N.M.82501 as State Section Director forSante Fe County. Thad is an ardentphotographer and field investigator. Heis presently developing a good rapportwith police and news agencies in hisarea so that they will refer UFO sightingreports to him for investigation. Hisgoal is to be called with adequate timeto photograph the UFO beingreported.

The July issue of The MUFONUFO Journal contained a brief synopsisof the 1978 MUFON UFO Symposiumin Dayton, Ohio on July 29 and 30,1978, at the Dayton ConventionCenter. Thanks to the beautiful andtimely reporting by Peter Tomikawa, 88Shoreview Drive, Apt. 2, Yonkers, N. Y.10710, the October 1978 edition of theJapanese newsstand magazine, "UFOsand Space" features the MUFONsymposium and speakers in gorgeousfull color plus black and whitephotographs. A color photograph ofMajor Donald Keyhoe and PeterTomikawa graces the front cover with"MUFON" spelled out in English. Thisfeatured article covers six pages. Peterhas reviewed each of the speakerspresentations with photographs takenfrom the Proceedings plus his ownsuperb photography. Two additionalpages in the magazine contain a storyabout Dr. J. Allen Hynek. Anotherindependent article by ShozoNakamura is a full page spread aboutthe Mutual UFO Network, Inc., and itsworldwide organization.

During the month of October, aJapanese TV Network will show a UFOdocumentary made in the UnitedStates when a film crew visitedMUFON in Seguin, Texas, Project

Starlight International in Austin, Texas, the Center for UFO Studies inEvanston, Illinois, and GSW inPhoenix, Arizona. Peter Tomikawa wasan advisor to the film crew andaccompanied them to Austin.

In addition to the outstanding newscoverage of the 1978 MUFON UFOSymposium, an ad produced in bothJapanese and English appears in theOctober issue of "UFOs and Space."The cover page is a replica of the coverof the 1978 Symposium Proceedingsdesigned by Donald Tucker, MUFONStaff Artist from Houston, Texas.Incidentally, Mr. Tucker will be theChairman for the 1980 MUFONSymposium to be held in Houston,Texas (actually near the NASA SpaceCenter in Clear Lake, Texas).

I would like to take thisopportunity to thank Peter Tomikawafor his outstanding writing and publicrelations on behalf of MUFON inJapan. Between the magazine "UFOsand Space" and the TV documentary,MUFON is going to be well known notonly in Japanese UFO circles, but bythe general public.

The August 22 issue ofNATIONAL ENQUIRER reported onthe UFO flap which took place in theSyracuse, N.Y., area during March andApril of this year. The UFO and cattlemutilation cases from the Elsberry,Mo., area are detailed in the August 29ENQUIRER. NASA official CharlesKubokawa is quoted as saying thatUFOs represent a highly-advancedtechnology in the September 19ENQUIRER issue. This issue also tells

. of actor Edward Winter's UFO sightingwhile a . member of the Air Force.Winter will have the leading role in thenew episodes of TV's "Project U.F.6."series.

A report on the radar tracking of aUFO at Florida's Pinecastle ElectronicWarfare Range is featured in theAugust 22 issue of THE STAR. NewUFO reports from the vicinity of FortStewart, Georgia, are presented in theAugust 29 issue. The September 5 issuereports on author Zecharia Sitchin'stheory that humans are hybrids ofextraterrestr ials and terrestrialapemen. Sitchin's theory is presentedin detail'"in his book, THE 12THPLANET.

The #11 issue of TRUE FLYINGSAUCERS & UFOs contains little ofinterest, with most of the contentsbeing either rehash or material havingno direct connection with the UFOsubject.

The #4 IDEAL'S UFO MAGA-ZINE is also a loser, as I stronglysuspect that virtually all of its articlesare written by the same person usingvarious pseudonymns. I would also bewilling to bet that 98% of the material ineach issue is total fiction. I'd suggestyou let it remain on the stands, alongside OFFICIAL UFO, ANCIENTASTRONAUTS, and other insults tothe intelligence.

The official Army magazine,SOLDIERS, has a fairly well-balanced

article on UFOs in its August issue. Itincludes a recap of the Coynehelicopter case from 1973, pro and constatements by John Acuff of NICAP,Jennie Zeidman, Phillip Klass, andothers.

PENTHOUSE for October hasanother summary of the UFO subject, presenting very little new material.Other articles in this issue deal withspace and science-fiction themes.

The October issue of UFOREPORT has articles by Jerome Clarkon a North Dakota abduction case,Larry Arnold on a Pennsylvania"triangle," and other features on"subterranean saucers," ancientmonuments, etc. The usual mixture ofgood, mediocre , and h i g h l yquestionable material. .

Jerome Clark's update on theTravis Walton case in October FATEintroduces the results of PsychologicalStress Evaluator (PSE) tests whichhave been administered to Walton. Ifthe PSE data can be believed (and thatis still a topic of some controversy initself), no deception is indicated inWalton's story.

Those interested in possible UFOpropulsion systems might like to obtaina booklet (in photocopy form) by K.W.Behrendt, UFO PROPULSIONSYSTEMS, O R I G I N S , A N DPURPOSES. This is a technical analysisof UFO flight methods and includessome quite interesting material on thepossibility of faster-than-light travel.Copies may be obtained for $3.00 eachfrom: Nova Enterprises, P.O. Box 890,Elizabeth, NJ 07207.

SAUCERS: A MODERN MYTH OFTHINGS SEEN IN THE SKIES by C.G.Jung (Princeton University Press,December); MESSENGERS OFDECEPTION by Jacques Vallee(And/Or Press, March 1979). The Jungbook is a paperback reprint of theoriginal edition which has been out ofprint for some time.

DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE byWaltAndni*

The May 1978 issue of THEMUFON UFO Journal carried anarticle titled "MUFON Information.Centers" and identified six of theseCenters where newspaper clippings, magazine articles, and other pertinent'UFO information could be sent forreproduction and distribution toMUFON Foreign Representatives.Richard H. Delair;Germany: Illobrand von Ludwiger;Japan: Jun-lchi Takanashi; andBelgium and France: Jacques Bonabot."

Since Richard Hall became Editorof the Journal, his former position ofInternational Coordinator has beenvacant. Dick was quick to recognize'that one person could not properly..correspond with all of our Foreign^Representatives, Consultants, and vResearch Specialists and provide the -service and communications essential ffor these fine people to become an^integral part of the worldwide UFOnetwork . He suggested andrecommended that competent peopleshould be selected on each continent to^deal directly with our foreign 'representatives. Mrs. Cynthia Hindemphasized this important aspect (L

during MUFON's Annual Corporate >Meeting in Dayton, Ohio on July 30, ;-1978: We have gone one step furtherthan to divide the world up intocontinents, by extending our coverageto eight Continental Coordinators, working under the guidance of ourInternational Coordinator. Thisdistribution is not only geographicallyarranged, but i t takes intoconsideration the language and culturalaspects of the nations groupedtogether. The Continental Coordin-ators will have the following individual

areas of responsibility: Africa, Europe,Asia, Australia/New Zealand, MiddleEast, Central America, South America, and the Far East. The nations withineach of these areas is listed in this issueof the Journal under a separateheading.

At this time we are extremelyproud to announce the names of thepeople who will start filling theseimportant posts. Our new InternationalCoordinator (a member of the MUFONBoard of Directors) is Michael Sinclair,108 Isabella St., Apt. 1010, Toronto,Ontario M4Y 1N6, Canada. Mike is oneof MUFON's early members, and hasattended over half of our annual UFOsymposiums, since 1970. Educationallyspeaking Mr. Sinclair has an M.A. inPublic Administration and will soonreceive his Ph.D. in EducationalPlanning. Mike is presently employedas an economist. He is chairman andeditor of the UFO newsletter"UFORUM" published by the U.F.O.Research Center in Toronto.

. The ability to communicate in thepredominant languages is an essentialasset for the Continental Coordinatorpositions. Mr. William G. Hinrichsen,25401 Via De Anza, Laguna Niguel,California 92667 has volunteered toserve as Continental Coordinator forSouth America. He was born and raisedin Argentina where he spent the first 20years of his life. For the past 13 years,Bill has been a resident and a U.S.citizen living in the United States. Hewas formerly a pilot at the Argentine AirForce Academy and still is a licensedpilot. Professionally, he is selfemployed, providing accounting, taxes, and management services to themedical profession under the businessname of Medicorp. He has been amember of MUFON for 3 years. He firstbecame interested in the study of UFOswhen he was 14 years of age havingbeen introduced to the subject by his

father who was very well read on thephenomenon. Bill and his wife will bevisiting in Argentina, leaving LosAngeles on December 14,1978. He willcontact MUFON people in bothBuenos Aires and Rosario during his 2-week vacation.

During the 1978 MUFON UFOSymposium, Jerold R. Johnsonreiterated his interest in becoming aContinental Coordinator, where hisSpanish language would be beneficial. After November 15,1978, Mr. Johnsonwill be residing at 3524 Greystone #194,Austin, Texas 78731. Jerry or "Ron'? ashe likes to be called by his amateurradio friends, due to his call lettersWA5RON, has been the MUFON StateAmateur Radio Director for Texas anda Field Investigator since June 23,1973.He has a B.A. in Archeology from theUniversity of Texas and is presently acommunications technician. Ron isfilling the post of ContinentalCoordinator for Central America, which also includes Mexico and theislands in the West Indies. He has doneseveral translations of UFO reportsfrom Spanish for Journal articles in thepast.
