Last PostMy tenure as the Dean ofthe Faculty of Agro-BasedIndustri (FIAT) ends today(31st December), and myservice as an academicianat UMK, which began inJune 2008 will end at theend of January 2014,which is exactly 67 months. For the last twoyears, I was given the
responsibility to lead FIATat the Jeli Campus as itsfirst Dean, and during theperiod, I had the support ofmy great team who hasgiven their best. This hasprovided the impetus forFIAT to always moveforward in line with thevision, mission and aims asenshrinedin the UMK 2020
Strategic Blueprint and theJeli TransformationProgramme. These 2 years hasbeen very challenging, especially with the limita-tion that we faced as every-one should be well awareoff. This crisis cannot bedenied as the Jeli Campusstarted right from scratch

ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR: LEARNING
THE ESSENTIALS
I was recently given the opportunity to attend
a 3 day course on Adobe Illustrator which
was held from the 3rd to 5th December.
Adobe Illustrator which is fondly known as AI
among graphic designers and users of inter-
face softwares can be quite versatile and
easy to work with once one knows the basictools. A quite number of tips were gained from the short workshop.
There are many tools and applications using AI, but those more
relevent in print work has been very beneficial and will be put to
good use in enhancing the print work of the faculty, especially
MyFIAT. Although stilll an amatuer user of AI, with time and experi-
ence will make MyFIAT more likable by the university community.By Mohd Hafiz Jamaludin

when he leaves the Jeli Campus.
On behalf of the members of the faculty I would like to record
my sincere appreciation for his many contributions to the Faculty
and wish him well in his retirement.

received the Merit of Excellence Award for his excellent contribu-
tion in the field of Science Education. Dr. Mohammed Arifullah,
Senior Lecturer received the Young Scientist Award for his exten-
sive work on medicinal plants and plant tissue culture. This conference has also served as a stepping stone for building
new relations with renowned scientists from around the world,
particularly with University of Colombo and its Institute for Agro
Technology and Rural Sciences. The potential for collaboration
with this premier university in Sri Lanka would bring mutual benefits
when a Memorandum of Understanding with UMK in the not too
distant future becomes a reality.

The Dean of the Faculty of Agro-
Based Industry (FIAT) leaves office
at the end of January 2014. Prof
Datuk Dr Ahmad Anwar Ismail (to
those who know him as a Datuk and
prefers not to reveal this to anyone)
has been the Dean since FIAT was
established in 2012. He has spent
67 months in the service of UMK out
of which 24 months as the Dean. He
was amongst the pioneer when hefirst joined the Faculty of Agro Indus-
try and Natural Resources (FASA) in
June 2008 and assisted the then
Dean, Prof Dr Ibrahim Che Omar, to
develop FASA right from scratch. He
was the Head of Department for
Agro Industry (2010-2012) and when
FIAT was established appointed as
the Dean in Jeli Campus. One of the
immediate tasks he undertook to
strengthen teaching and learning
particularly related to agriculture was
to developthe Agro Park in the
campus to house various crops,
plants and livestock for the purpose
of conducting field work and
research and this is slowly getting
into shape.
To those who know him,
he is an unassuming
person, prefers not to
hog the limelight but
would like to keep a low
profile. One of the other
things he wanted to see
when assuming office
was that there should be
regular dissemination of
current news and infor-mation within the faculty,
the university and
beyond. The first issue
Bidding Farewell by Dr. Mohammad Arifulllah
of the monthly bulletin MyFIAT came
into being in April 2012. Now both
printed and online versions are
available. He was also instrumental
in wanting to see that FIAT takes a
lead in setting up its own in-house
journal. Thus in 2013 the inaugural
issue (Vol. 1, January Issue 2013) of
the Journal ofTropical Resources
and Sustainable Science, of which
he is the Chief Editor, was pub-
lished.
Over the last two years we
knew him as the person who led the
faculty he has been a inspiring figure
The agropark is slowly taking
shape, and the hardwork put in
is slowly flourishing. Congratu-
altion to the management for
Agropark. Yet, although the
development of the Agropark is
intended for learning and
teaching, the management
should also consider that theagropark is a habitat for
various interesting species.
Care should be taken to
develop the area, taking intoconsideration the current ecology,
what more being an intelectual insti-
tution does not equates well with
destruction. The management must
accept that animals do roam UMK
Jeli Campus undeveloped areas,
and development should include
them in the design of the Campus in
the Forest Park. Although some of
these animals may pose a threat to

the various plantation plots set up,
and also to staff and students work-
ing in the area. The development
should remember that the stream
running through the agropark is an
important water source and is
frequent by various animals, and it
is not right to prevent them from
accessing such resources.Currently, a team of researcher
from both Faculty lead by Mr.
Kamarul Arifin from FSB, Mohd
Hafiz Jamaludin and assisted by
Ahmad Auzan Azhar and Moham-
med Firdaus Mohd Ridzuan are
interested to evaluate UMK wild
immediate neighbours (or co-host),
with the aim to highlight that these
animals are real, and also have the
rights to co-exist. Although some
may be dangerous, but reports of
sighting of animals such as tapir, an
endangered animal, and recently
some unusual feline track marks
are what put these researchers to
know more about UMK backgar-
den.

Three members of the academic staff
from FIAT received a prestigious
award each at the recently held
World Congress on PharmaceuticalSciences and Chemical Technology
in Colombo, Sri Lanka, 16th-18th
December 2013. The congress was
organized by University of Colombo,
University of Kelaniya and Industrial
Technology Institute in collaboration
with the International Society for
Nature and Health Care Inc. USA.
MyFIAT wishes the three recipient
heartiest congratulations as this
occasion had surely promoted the
UMK name on the world stage.
Prof. Dr Ahmad Anwar Ismail, Dean
of the Faculty of Agro Based Industry
The last two years as Deanbrings fond memories, but there arealso some which are hard to swal-low. The most dissapointing was myinability to defend the ViceChancellors Quality Award whichwas won by FASA (Faculty of AgrIndustry and Natural Resources, now defunct) for 2 years in a row. Iam sorry for this and how I would like
to forget this episode.Lastly, I hope
everyone in FIATcontinue to assist who-ever is appointed theDean. I believe FIAT willalways be in the fore-front now and in thefuture when given theresources needed forthe faculty to functioneffectively, but what is
important is the commitment of thestaff to achieve what we desire.Personal agenda by anyone, fromthe top to bottom, has no place in thescheme of things as this will impedethe promotion of excellence but
resourcefulness by all will.I would like to end this with
again requesting forgiveness for theweakness in my leadership if any, orwhatever actions taken that hasmade some of you uneasy during mytenure as Dean.
I wish for a brighter future forFIAT. We must take the first step tobe in the forefront to become a entitythat is much admired and respectedBe the change you want to see
