Education Week -The Big Dig What a great day Friday was. It was fantastic to see so many parents visit their children’s classrooms and stay for a picnic lunch.

As always the Stage 2 choir were wonderful and hearing Alana and Aiden’s Multicultural speeches as well as representatives from Kindergarten and Year 1, sharing what they want to be when they grow up was a tribute to our school.

While the digging up of the time capsule proved to be a little tricky at first with former teachers and students all having a turn at opening the capsule, eventually the contents were revealed to an excited crowd. Chants of… “Open it! …Open it! could be heard throughout the school playground.

Contents of the time capsule included a bicentennial coin, old school uniforms, geometry books, photos of staff and students, samples of students’ work, photos of the playground, cassette tape, old merit awards and many, many more interesting items.

Contents from the time capsule will be displayed in the foyer for all to see.

I would like to publicly thank all teachers and members of the P and C who spent many hours coordinating our Education week activities. Community spirit was definitely evident!

Welcome to our University of Wollongong Professional Experience Students. They will complete their final placement at our school. Jessica Bailey will be on class 6B and Emily Hart will be on 3/4JM. Giselle Coltman Principal

Enrolment of Kindergarten Students for 2015 We are now taking

enrolments of Kindergarten students for 2015. If you are an existing family with a child who will start Kindergarten in 2015, please ensure that you have completed one of the new enrolment forms and handed the form to Mrs Rickersey at the front office.

If you know any families in your neighbourhood who have a child beginning school in 2015, and live in our local area but do not have siblings at our school, could you kindly let them know that we are currently taking enrolments of Kindergarten students for 2015. All enrolment information is available from Mrs Rickersey at the front office.

Are you Leaving us? If for any reason your children will not be returning to Nareena Hills

Public School in 2015 could you kindly inform the office as soon as possible. Knowing exact numbers assists the school to plan for 2015 based on accurate information.

Figtree High School Year 7 Scholarship 2015 Year 6 students who will be attending Figtree High

School in 2015 are encouraged to apply for the 2015 Figtree High School Year 7 Scholarship.

To gain this scholarship you need to display high academic diligence and/or sporting and/or creative and performing arts achievement, outstanding citizenship qualities and exemplary attendance,

behaviour and attitude to school.

Application forms can be collected from the front office and due back to school by Friday 19 September.

Premiers Reading Challenge Countdown Closing date 22 August - 3 weeks to go!

Health Snippets Did you know…? 6 to 12 chips (100g) contain around 3 teaspoons of fat and 1000kj. Compare this to a small baked potato (100g) with a light spray of oil having less than ¼ teaspoon of fat and 400kj. Why not make healthy hot chips at home? Just cut 2 large potatoes into chip-sized pieces, spray with canola oil and bake in a hot oven until golden brown. Be Active Every Day Physical activity means to move the body. Exercise classes, dance, sports, games, everyday playing, swimming, skating, cycling, active play, skipping and walking are all activities which keep adults and children healthy.

Make it Easy Children (and adults) are more likely to eat healthy snacks if it is made easy for them. Try cutting up some fruit and putting it in the fridge for when the kids come home. If it’s easy to grab they are more likely to eat it.

Walking Bus Winter Reward Program Having trouble getting your kids motivated to join the walking bus during the cooler weather? Been meaning to get your child started on the walking bus?

From next week (August 11) and for the rest of term 3, the Nareena Hills Walking Bus is running a Reward Program.

Walkers will receive a sticker passport and every time they join the bus for our morning or afternoon bus walk, students will receive a sticker to add to their sheet.

For every 10 walks, students will receive a 50 cent canteen voucher, which they hand into the canteen. It’s a simple and fun way to encourage your kids to get involved.

We are also in need of additional volunteers - whether you can only help out occasionally when our regular volunteers are unavailable or more regularly on a specific morning or afternoon, please contact Anne Simpson at [email protected] Anne Simpson Walking Bus Co-ordinator 0411801553

Futsal - State Champions Congratulations to all of the students who travelled to Penrith last week to compete in the State Futsal Finals. It was a magnificent effort by all students who played with great skill and sportsmanship. Representing the girls team were Teagan, Jeddah, Alana, Isadora, Alyssa, Hayley, Eden and Kaiah. Apologies to Teagan whose name was inadvertently left out of last week’s newsletter as a member of the girls Futsal team.

Special congratulations to the Nareena Hills Red boys team who were crowned State Champions. The team of Tim, Aiden, Darcy, Ned, Logan Tomas, Adam and David were a credit to the school. A magnificent effort!

Special thanks to Mr G and Mr C for their superb coaching. Of course we must not forget the wonderful Mrs Thompson for her coordination of the teams. Lastly a huge thank you to all of the parents who not only transported the students to Penrith but ably assisted with coaching!

From David and Tim Last Tuesday, the State Futstal Tournament was held in Penrith. Teams came from all over NSW to compete with only the best teams. Nareena Hills was one of them, coming second in Regionals. Our hopes were high to win this tournament.

Our first match was against Trinity, which we drew 3 all. We won our second game 9-1. We next played Oatley and we drew 1-1.

At this stage of the tournament we were leading the competition equally with Trinity. A coin toss decided 1st and 2nd place in the group stage. We lost the toss and as a result, we qualified for the quarter finals.

In this game we played Trinity again and we won this game 3-0. After playing another 2 games which we won the first in a penalty shoot out and the second on Golden Goal.

This result meant that Nareena Hill Red team were the champions of the State Futsal Tournament.

Darcy Please support Darcy by purchasing raffle tickets from him before and after school. He will be selling the tickets at the front of the school. Tickets are $2.00 each and you can win some great prizes. The much needed money will help Darcy fly to Albany to represent NSW at the National Cross Country Carnival.

District Athletics Good Luck to the all of the students who will represent Nareena Hills Public School at the District Athletics Carnival on Thursday and Friday of this week.

SCHOOL NEWS SCHOOL SONG

Fire Brigade Visit Last Thursday the children in KF, 2T and 2L were very privileged to have a visit from Fire and Rescue NSW, Wollongong, C Platoon. The firefighters gave a very informative talk about fire safety in the home. An important point that was discussed at length was fire evacuation plans. I included a proforma of a fire evacuation plan as an attachment in the Newsletter for Term 2 Week 9. The firefighters suggested that a good way to practice a fire evacuation plan was under parent supervision with a child getting out of their bed and evacuating the house with their eyes closed. When there is a lot of smoke it is hard to see so rehearsing this under parent guidance may be advantageous.

After the talk the children went outside and each had a turn of operating the fire hose. The teachers were offered a turn of operating the fire hose as well. The fire fighters were very generous with their time and definitely held the children's interest. A very informative afternoon was had by all. I have attached a proforma of how to report a fire. You may like to view it and discuss this with your family. It is very important to leave the phone line open and to not hang up. For more information and some fun activities for children you can visit the fire brigade website on www.brigadekids.com.au Mrs Parker

Crunch and Sip Starts 19 August at Nareena Hills Public School. Why have a Crunch&Sip break? Allowing students to eat fruit or vegetables in class in the morning or afternoon helps students to ‘re-fuel’ during the ‘gap’ between breakfast and morning tea or lunch and afternoon tea.

The Crunch&Sip break: Improves concentration and classroom performance, allows students to try new foods, helps to build healthy eating habits and introduces students to the idea that fruit and vegies can be good snack foods.

The next meeting is on: Wednesday 20 August

Meetings are held in the school staffroom and begin at 7pm. New members are always welcome. Julijana Stanojevic P & C President

Art Show The Art Show was a roaring success. Thank you to all of the parents

who supported the P and C by purchasing their child’s art work. All monies raised are All monies raised

Crunch&Sip also gives children with the opportunity to eat the piece of fruit/veg that might otherwise be left in their lunchbox and not be eaten at all.

How many fruits and vegetables do children need to eat? It is important to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables every day. The amount of fruit and vegetables recommended depends on age, appetite and activity levels.

are going towards funds needed for a COLA over the basketball court.

If you would like to purchase your child’s art work you can still do so! Money can be sent into the office and placed into the P & C box.

School Banking All tokens will be collected next week. The banking system keeps track of when students are eligible for rewards. Twice a term eligible students will be asked to choose a reward.
