Corrections

Here are two corrections for our March, 1999 (Vol. 12, #1) newsletter brought to our attention by mem-ber Jim Heath, Jr.

Clyde Downing has discontinued the Swazey Family Newsletter.

Re: The Iron Era Mortuary of 1883 "Joseph Heath, Bartleyville, age 80" The Iron Era, Vol XIV, #40, 8 Nov 1884, pg. 2, stated that Joseph died on Wednesday, 22 Oct 1884. Joseph was a brother to Jim's great-great-great-grandfather, Jere-miah Heath; Jeremiah's wife was Mary Swayze

Our Purpose is to make each issue informative and enjoyable to a varied readership by including articles that present current genealogical tools and methods, unpublished local records, and relevant historical context.

New Acquisitions at the Library

by John A. Sass

Here are the latest acquisitions at the library:

Genealogical Abstracts, Revolutionary War Vet-erans Script Act of 1852, by Margie G. Brown, H929.32 BRO, 1997. The files that contained

the information for this publication covered a multitude of problem warrants: dual claims, inter-ference, proof of a higher military rank, death of the veteran in battle, lost or misplaced warrants, failure to survey, etc. These could all affect the amount of scrip to which the claimants were enti-tled. If the veteran was long dead, these files could reveal the names of the grandchildren and great-grandchildren and the places to which they migrated.

Genealogists helping to compile this information may frequently be aware of names that will fill in the blanks. If that information was not in the file, it was not added. No information from any other source was used. Many of the papers were diffi-cult to decipher. If errors have been made, the impact may be lessened by the fact that the rec-ords are available for researchers to make their own interpretation. These are abstracts for ge-nealogical information and therefore will not en-compass all of the information that might be of interest to researchers of a particular line. You are encouraged to read the complete file. There is a surname index in the back of the book as well as an alphabetical list of veterans in the front of the book.

The Hardwick Monthly Meeting Burying Ground, Allamuchy, Warren County, New Jersey, by Scott Shepherd, H3W1 SHEP, 1999. This publication contains an alphabetical list of those buried in the cemetery of the Hardwick Monthly Meeting in Al-lamuchy, Warren County, NJ including a list of eighty-nine names from the Quaker burial rec-ords. Close inspection of the list reveals very few of those listed died following 1855 even though interments are known to continue until 1918. Most interments include the following families: Adams, Laing, Lundy, Patterson, Schmuck, Schooley, Stevenson, Ware and Willson.

Our Heritage and Hope: The First Presbyterian Church of Fairmount, Califon, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, 1747-1997, by Marie Farley, H3HU5 CALI PRES, 1997. This publication contains the history of the church as well as detailed biogra-phies and family histories of its ministers. These biographies include that of Robert L. Agnew, Ed-win Hascall Brown, Jacob R. Castner, Everett Ross Clinchy, Russell James Clinchy, John Ma-son Cooney, Frederick Dalliker, Titus Elwood Davis, William L. Davis, Isaac Snedicker Davison, Frank E. Dupue, Marcus Snedes Hutton, Nathan-iel Baker Klink, Leonard Henry Evans, Edwin Wack Long, Charles M. Oakley, Frank Harper Poole, Tillman S. Rush, William Otis Ruston, John Rutherford, James Scott, Rogert D. Sidener, Baker Smith, Frank P. Thompkins, John C. Van Dervoort, Roger Allen Verse, Casper Wacker, John R. Wilcox, Charles Wood, and Charles W. Wood. Unfortunately, no records pertaining to baptisms, marriages and deaths are cited in this publication. Not indexed.

More Records of Hunterdon County, New Jersey, compiled by Phyllis B. D'Autrechy, H3HU1 D'AU v. 1, 1998. This compilation contains records from three different areas of Hunterdon County: Surrogate's Office, County Clerk's Office, and some nonpublic records. The surrogate's records include volumes I and II of receipts, 1817-1848, division of lands, 1795-1876, minutes of orphan court, volume 1, 1785-1797, and guardianship of minors and lunatics, 1794-1827. The county clerk's records contain 18th century coroner's in-quests, peddlers' licenses, 1763-1879, naturaliza-tion records, 1803-1876, and miscellaneous rec-ords of the Pennington Presbyterian Church, 1822-1850. Indexed.

Images of America, The Mendhams, Morris County, New Jersey, by John W. Rae, HM2 MEND RAE, 1998. This visual history follows the region from the Revolutionary War to the Indus-trial Revolution. Featured in this book are views of elaborate historic homes and businesses. Captured in over 200 images are moments in the lives of people who made this community. Fami-lies mentioned in the publication include: Bliss, Byram, Cromwell, Hudson, Ralston, Rawles and Wills. Other recently acquired publications in this series include: Bedminister, Berkeley Heights, Chatham, Hanover Township, Madison, Prince-ton, Somerset Hills, Wharton and Whippany. Not indexed.

Free African Americans of North Carolina and Virginia, by Paul Heinegg, H975 HEI, 1997. This book includes the family histories of more than 80% of those counted as "all other free persons" in the 1790 and 1800 census. Two hundred eighty-one families are listed in the beginning of the book and are too numerous to list here. These genealogies, comprising the colonial history of the majority of the free African American families of North Carolina and Virginia, reveal a facet of American colonial history previously overlooked by historians. Users should take note that the free African Americans have been identified by printing their family names in bold except in their own family history. Check the index for many other smaller families.

Obituary Index to the Daily Record, 1954-1955, Morristown, Morris County, New Jersey, compiled by Claire Kissel, HMI DAI.OBI, 1999. This is the most recent addition to the series of indexing the obituaries from the Morristown Daily Record. Us-ers of this index should be aware that while this is primarily an index of obituaries, additional infor-mation may be found in the death notices. Death notices are usually listed on the same newspaper page as the obituaries, however a death notice may appear a day or two before or after the obitu-ary or even as much as a week or two before or after the obituary.

Deacons Accounts of the First Dutch Reformed Church of Beverwyck, Albany County, New York, 1652-1674, by Janny Venema, H974.742 DEA, 1998. This publication provides a history of the church and includes references to its parishioners. Indexed.

Pioneer Cemeteries of Hampton Township, Alle-gheny County, Pennsylvania, H974.885 PIO, 1997. This publication was compiled and written by the North Hills Genealogists of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It includes interments at the Pine Creek Covenanter (Reformed) Presbyterian Church, the Depreciation Lands Museum Ceme-tery and the Hampton Cemetery. Cemetery lot owners are given, when known. Indexed.

The Barbour Collection of Connecticut Town Vital Records, Volumes 8-10, by Lorraine Cook White, H974.6 WHI, 1998. Contains marriage and death records arranged alphabetically for the following towns: Danbury (1685-1847), Darien (1820-1851), Derby (1655-1852), Durham (1708-1852). East-ford (1847-1851), East Haddam (1743-1857), East Hartford (1783-1853), East Haren (1700-1852) and East Lyme (1839-1853).

"Railroad Retirement Board Records" Abstracted from an article by George G. Morgan in "Along Those Lines" in the Genealogy Forum of AOL.

When Congress established Social Security in 1935, they also instituted the Railroad Retirement Act that made provisions to maintain a separate program for employees of the nation's railroads. A separate block of numbers (700-728) were set aside for these employees. The Railroad Retirement Board administrates this federal retirement program covering employ-ees working on the nation's railroads in 1937 and later. The Railroad Retirement Board will release information on de-ceased persons for genealogical research. Files for railroad employees are found only at the headquarters office of the Rail-road Retirement Board. Among the records that may be included for an employee are:

— Application for participation in Railroad Retirement Statement(s) of railroad service Application for employee annuity

— Description and certification of eligibility

— Record of service for which no records are available — Certificate of termination of service — Death certificate of employee — Notice of Death and Statement of Compensation

"Railroad Retirement Board Records" (continued) The Railroad Retirement Board will perform searches for employee records for genealogical purposes for a $16 nonrefundable fee, payable in advance. A check or money order should be made payable to the Railroad Retirement Board, and mailed to:

U.S. Railroad Retirement Board Office of Public Affairs 844 N. Rush Street Chicago, IL 60611-2092

Since records are kept by the employee's unique number, this is the best way to request information. You may find 'the So-cial Security or Railroad Retirement number on the person's death certificate. In order for the Railroad Retirement Board to perform its search, please provide the Railroad Retirement number and the person's full name. In some cases, it may be possible to locate records using only the full name, address, and birth and death dates of the person. However, it is usually not possible to locate records for people with relatively common surnames unless a number is included.

You may learn more about your ancestor and his/her employment history through this route than you might otherwise have been able to ferret out on your own. Remember that the various railroads' records are scattered throughout various archives and repositories, and that many have been lost or destroyed. In these cases, the Railroad Retirement Board's records may be the only viable place to gather more information about your railroader.

For more information about the Railroad Retirement Board, please be sure to visit their Web site at: http://www.rrb.gov/ Here you will find details about the office, and a special link on the mail screen labeled "Genealogical Inquiries" will pro-vide details about the office. In addition, there is a link to "Genealogical Research Before 1936 at: http://www.rrb.gov/geneal2.html Here you will find a partial list of depositories with railroad records.

THE IRON ERA

The Iron Era, published in Dover, NJ, contains a wealth of information about residents of Dover and the surrounding areas of Morris County. The Morristown-Morris Twp. Library has microfilm copies of the issues published from Jan. 20, 1872 through Dec. 10, 1905. Unfortunately, there is no index. However, toward the end of each year from 1881 through 1892, a synopsis of the years events was published in the newspaper. The Library's col-lection includes a transcript of the synopses, Morris County History 1881-1892 [HM1/Dove/Mor]. (continued from Vol 12, No 1, p 14).

A Genealogy Day with Meldon J. Wolfgang, III

This seminar, held April 10, 1999 and sponsored by MAGS with support from The Morristown-Morris Township Library and the Salmon Family Fund, was decidedly a huge success. Over 100 genealogists enjoyed the informative and entertain-ing talks by acclaimed genealogical lecturer Meldon Wolfgang, III. Mr. Wolfgang acquainted us with alternative sources available in libraries and government records that can help to reach beyond dead ends and to round out the lives and times of our ancestors.

"Sleuthing in the Stacks: Using Non-Traditional Resources to Uncover Genealogical Clues" Genealogists are usually familiar with resources used for genealogical research. But when you hit a Brick Wall, what do you do? Give Up? No! It is time to start sleuthing in the stacks. Non-traditional resources in libraries may provide just the right clue to enable you to leap over, tunnel under or tear down the brick wall that is impeding your research. You need to do a literature search to discover as much as possible about the time and place of your research problem. You need to check all possible secondary sources: literature in related and unrelated fields; sources concerning ancestors' community, ethnic, religious and social groups; references to relatives, neighbors and friends. Background material may give you clues that will lead to important genealogical facts. You need to investigate your problem from every possible angle.

"Using the Obscure and Uncommon Records of Local Governments" Search records produced by city, town and county governments. These include coroner's reports, public safety reports and records, records of public charities, legislative records, orphan assistance records, and many others such as licenses, jury service and professional registers. Many counties maintain records of military discharges. Public health and welfare agen-cies retain records on government-run hospitals, indigent burials, victims of epidemics. Maps may show land ownership and the physical layout of neighborhoods.

"The Great Disappearing Act: Germans and German-Americans in America" Researching German immigrant families presents a unique challenge. Again, the genealogist needs to do an extensive lit-erature search to increase the chance of success. Scholars, social scientists and professional historians have often uncovered new record sources unknown to genealogists. Mr. Wolfgang has compiled an extensive resource and reference guide to help you with your research. Handouts on these three topics are available in The Morristown-Morris Township Library.
