Cornerstone Connection AUGUST 2010 VOLUME 4 ISSUE 12 SUNDAY SCHOOL N EW S FROM PASTOR RICK... THE  WINNING WALK   A Study of the Book of JOSHUA Begins Sunday, August 29 Sunday School Classes & Sermon Series Sunday mor nings. I believe God w ants to use the Book of Joshua to take this church to a new level of spiritual maturity. I believe God wants to take us from being a good church to being a great church. I realize this method will present new challenges to me in preparing sermons at least 2-3 weeks out so the curriculum can be written and placed in the teachers’ hands in plenty of time for them to study and prepare for each Sunday’s lesson. However, I a m excited about our digging in together and allowing God to have His way with us as  we focus in on the Book of Joshua.  As a faith family, we are at a crossroads, very similar to that of Israel in the Book of Joshua. We must be in agreement to go together where God is calling us to go. Pastor Rick Cornerstone Family,  We’re going to be doing something altogether different in Sunday School t his year. A few weeks ago , I shared with the church that we would be starting the Book of Joshua the last week in August . What Paul’s letter to the Ephesians explains doctrinally, the Book of Joshua illustrates practically; it shows us how to claim our riches in Christ and live victoriously. The purpose of our study will be to realize what God has in store for each one of His followers.  What does it take for us to cross the River Jordan into our land flowing with milk and honey—His chosen future for us? The theme of the series is The Winning Walk.  What does Sunday School have to do with this, you may ask? All through our faith family, from the children all the way up to our senior adults, we are going to design our Sunday School curriculum to coincide with the Sunday morning message from Joshua.  That means that, depending on what hour you attend Sunday School, you will hear the message preached from Joshua in the worship service and then will have the chance to discuss it in detail in your Sunday School class. If you attend Sunday School before worship, you will be able to discuss the passage for that morning and then hear it preached afterwards. Forrest, our Associate Pastor for Church Growth, who is over all the Sunday School, and Jim Wrather, our Sunday School Director, have worked  with me in coming up with this plan.  Through this plan a curriculum is being developed which will reach across our  whole church body. Let me explain the reasons for this ch ange. SUNDA Y SCHOOL NEW S FROM PASTOR RI CK...

Sunday School Classes

& Sermon Series

Sunday mornings. I believe God wantsto use the Book of Joshua to take thischurch to a new level of spiritualmaturity. I believe God wants to take usfrom being a good church to being agreat church.

I realize this method willpresent new challenges to me inpreparing sermons at least 2-3 weeks outso the curriculum can be written andplaced in the teachers’ hands in plenty of

time for them to study and prepare foreach Sunday’s lesson. However, I amexcited about our digging in together andallowing God to have His way with us as

crossroads, very similar to that of Israelin the Book of Joshua. We must be inagreement to go together where God iscalling us to go.

Pastor Rick

Cornerstone Family,  We’re going to be doing

something altogether different in Sunday School this year. A few weeks ago, Ishared with the church that we would bestarting the Book of Joshua the last week in August. What Paul’s letter to theEphesians explains doctrinally, the Book of Joshua illustrates practically; it showsus how to claim our riches  in Christ andlive victoriously. The purpose of our

What does it take for us to cross theRiver Jordan into our land flowing withmilk and honey—His chosen future forus? The theme of the series is The Winning Walk.

MISSIONARY UPDATES

also. It has been a problem.

  Scott & Cindy Hunter—The last

two weeks of July were spent in

Michigan at the Member Orientation

Program (MOP). Two weeks of cross

cultural training just gave us a glimpse

into the changes that are ahead of us. It

was both encouraging and a little

intimidating to think what is ahead of

us, yet we also got a glimpse into the

joy of trusting God in a way that we

have never had to before. We are at

nearly 20% of our monthly support and

25% of our outgoing support. We are

hosting Dessert and the Journeyevenings at our house on a bi-weekly

basis as an opportunity to share what is

happening in our lives and answer

questions. Would you like to attend?

Send Cindy an email and let her know.

Tim & Marsha Judy— We have

been extremely busy this summer - it

seems we never catch up withrest! Here's some requests for August.Visa renewal -August 6-11, travel toPoland - pray for safe travel andapproval of our visas for the next yearTim travels to throughout EasternUkraine the last week of the month.Pray for safety and new relationshipswith Business people.I am working on several upcomingvolunteer teams for the fall - pray fordetails and approval from regionalgovernment leaders

Things are changing here - it is moredifficult to work as freely as we oncecould - Pray for favor as we seek to doGod's work around the countryThank you!

Patrick & Diana Williams —   Just

returned “home” from a week of meetings in another city. We are soglad to be back! Our hearts are gratefulfor each one of you as you giveyourself in obedience to the Father andpray for needs around the world. This

month we ask you to join with us as wefocus on Colossians 1:9-14.

Thankful...Funds were provided forBurmese Bibles! 21 are attending thediscipleship class! Many prayers havebeen answered when there wasn’t timeto even write and ask. We know youare holding us up before the Fathereven when you don’t know a specificneed. Pray...For national Burmesepartners as they attend the discipleshipclass to grow in boldness in sharingtheir faith. Many hearts will be open tothe Truth. We will have godly wisdomand spiritual discernment as we leadthis class. Thankful for you as weserve Him together.

Dave & Terri McInnis —  In fact,

David just had his 4th treatment onTuesday and a CT scan was also doneto see how things wereprogressing. The CT showed that thecancer is 90% gone!!! He feels awfulright now, but the chemo is doing whatit’s supposed to and very well, thanksto all the prayers we are sure!!Continue to pray for strength andhealing. He needs to be able to sleep

support Scott and Cindy, as well as ourmissionaries through the IMB.

Be in prayer for the sale of the Hunter’shouse; this is the biggest hurdle left forthem. If they can sell their house, thenas soon as they reach their financialgoal, they will be able to go. They arepatiently waiting upon God’s timing.

I look forward to seeing and hearingabout God’s work through this familyamong the people of Spain. God Blessyou guys for hearing and heedingGod’s call. Our prayers and financialsupport will be with you.

Pastor Rick

As you know, Cindy Hunter, ourchildren’s director, and her family havebeen called to serve God on the missionfield in Spain. We are excited for them

and what God is doing in their lives asHe prepares them for this new directionin ministry.

Cindy and Scott have spoken to ourfaith family about their call and theirwork. They shared that they will begoing with SEND, a non-denominational group. The reason forthis is that the IMB does not like tosend families where a high-schooler isinvolved. Their daughter Hannah is inhigh school. But this is not considered aproblem with SEND. So, the Hunters

have chosen to go with them instead. As their pastor, as well as being atrustee with the International MissionBoard (IMB) of the Southern BaptistConvention, I support their decision.

The difference between SEND and theIMB is that, we fully support our

missionaries through our CooperativeProgram giving, as well as our LottieMoon Christmas Offering, they do not.Their missionaries have to raise all

their funds themselves. That brings me to my reason for thisletter. Our Missions’ team, with myleading, has proposed that we givesome of the Hunter’s support throughour budget. Many of you haveindicated that you will support themindividually with a financial gift. Iencourage our faith family’s support. However, when you pray aboutsupporting Scott and Cindy, ask Godwhat He would have you give over andabove what you would give to the

Cooperative Program through yourtithe and your gift at Christmas toLottie Moon which is our missionaries’sole means of support. Do as DavidPlatt discusses in his book  Radical—beradical and make a real sacrifice! Let’sgive cheerfully and sacrificially to

SUNDAY SCHOOL INFO By now you are familiar with the fact

that we are, as a church, heading in to anew season together as we commune

with God through the book of Joshua.

In light of the changes that this will

bring for Sunday School, we will be

having an appreciation/preparation

meeting on August 8th

immediately

following the 10:45 morning worship.

The meeting will include lunch for all

teachers and their families and will be

held in the FLC. After the meal, all

teachers will have a meeting while the

rest of the family hangs out in the FLC,

supervision provided. This is an

extremely important meeting that does

not need to be missed. God is working

in our midst and getting us ready to

cross over into a deeper place with Him

as a church. We will discuss all the

exciting details at this meeting. Get

ready! God is taking us to the other

side. I’m thrilled and privileged to be a

part of the journey with you and with

Him.

We’re looking for adults to join our team in

conversation based on the study that is being presented that evening.

From Joy Peterson: Pour out your heart to God for your children

Have you ever felt burdened for your children and not known what to do about it?Moms in Touch is an opportunity to meet with other moms to pray for yourchildren. (www.momsintouch.org). To briefly describe MIT: Each week momsusually with kids in a common school or schools meet to pray. In that time each

week, we also learn more about an attribute (characteristic) of God and we praiseHim for it. We also silently confess our sins and thank God for His answers. Then,

we put before Him our requests. We pray for the specific needs of our children and we also pray scripture verses over our children. For example, we would pray, “May my children (by name) love the Lord their God with all their heart and with all theirsoul and with all their strength.” Praying scripture over the lives of our children is

very important because God tells us in Isaiah that His Word does not return void. When we pray scripture over our children, we know that we are praying for God’s will to come forth in the lives of our children. Scripture teaches that sometimes wedon’t have because we don’t ask. Moms in Touch is a place that helps us beaccountable to pray diligently over the lives of our children. Perhaps, you have neverprayed in a group. The same could be said of many people now in MIT. Is Godnudging your heart to be a part of MIT to pray more diligently for your children? If so, please contact Lisa Reid, [email protected] (854- 3087), Guilford County AreaMoms in Touch Coordinator..
