Yorkton MLA Greg Ottenbreit has announced he will run for a third term after a nomination held earlier this week as the Saskatchewan Party candidate in Yorkton for the next provincial elec-tion. “Years ago, I realized our province had so much poten-tial that we were failing to
live up to,” he says. “I knew Brad Wall and the Saskatchewan Party had the leadership and a plan to help Saskatchewan fulfill its desti-ny. And today, Saskatchewan is leading the nation, which inspires me to continue serv-ing as part of this team. I want to ensure our growth and the improved quality of
life for the citizens of Saskatchewan continues.” Ottenbreit was first elected to the Saskatchewan Legislature in the 2007 pro-vincial election. Currently the Government Whip in the Legislature, Ottenbreit has had a number of legislative responsibilities, including Chair of the
Legislature’s Standing Committee on Human Services, Legislative Secretary to the Premier for Vulnerable Youth, Legislative Secretary to the Minister of Environment on Recycling, and Legislative Secretary to the Minister of Social Services on Community Based Organizations. “As the Legislative Secretary
to the Premier for Vulnerable Youth, I was able to consult many stakeholders, including youth, for direction and ideas on how to help them live up to their potential, take part in Saskatchewan’s economy, and improve their quality of life,” Ottenbreit details.

GROOVY MAN! – On Thursday, May 15, students at St. Michael’s School in Yorkton performed the musical “Groovy” at Sacred Heart High School. The play, about a group of sixties kids who get together to put on a free concert promoting “music, beads and flowers” had the audience moving and grooving to 60’s tunes.

THE NEWS REVIEW
For the fi rst time in its nine-year history, the Parkland College Dollars for Scholars Golf Classic is sold out. The annual scholar-ship fundraiser takes place at Deer Park Golf Course in Yorkton on June 20. The event has room for 36 teams and the fi -nal spot was claimed on Friday. “This support is in-credible,” says Dollars for Scholars co-chair Brendan Wagner. “We came close to fi lling all
the spots last year, but I’m amazed how quick-ly people signed up this year.” Although the Texas Scramble’s 144-player limit has been reached, a waiting list is being put together in case some teams have to cancel. Anyone interested can contact the College to be put on the waiting list. Businesses can still sponsor the tournament with cash or prize dona-tions. Individuals can
support it by purchas-ing tickets to the post-event steak supper at $25 apiece. There will also be door prizes, a silent auction, contests, and 50/50 sales. Golfi ng begins with a 1 p.m. shot gun start. The later start time was a new addition to last year’s tournament and was well-received, allowing more people to get away from work for the afternoon. All proceeds from the non-competitive event go to the Parkland Col-
lege scholarship fund. Thanks to the generos-ity of local businesses, community groups, and individuals, the 2013 Dollars for Scholars Golf Classic raised over $28,000 for students enrolled in a variety of programs at the Col-lege’s fi ve campuses. That money is matched by the provincial gov-ernment’s Saskatch-
ewan Innovation and Opportunity Scholar-ship program, effective-ly doubling contribu-tions to the event. For more on the ninth annual Dollars for Scholars Golf Classic, call Parkland College at 1.866.783.6766, visit www.parklandcollege.sk.ca, or email [email protected].
Canadian residents, who die owning assets such as vacation prop-erties in the United States or stocks in U.S. companies, may be sub-ject to U.S. estate taxes. For tax purposes, assets include real and tangi-ble personal property situated in the U.S., shares of U.S securities and units of U.S. mutu-al funds, certain U.S. debt obligations, depos-its in a brokerage account in the U.S., assets of a business car-ried on in the U.S., and U.S. retirement plans and annuities. Under the Canada-U.S. Tax Treaty, Canadian residents with worldwide assets valued at US$5.34 mil-lion or higher will be required to pay U.S. estate tax as high as 40% on the fair market value of U.S. situs assets. Fortunately, some relief is possible. Canadian residents
may be able to claim a unified credit exemp-tion equal to the greater of US$13,000 or a pro-rated amount based on a formula using the value of U.S. assets rel-ative to total worldwide assets. For example, a Canadian resident with a total estate value of $10 million, owning $1 million of U.S. assets, will be subject to US$345,800 in estate tax. Claiming the uni-fied credit exemption reduces the U.S. estate tax liability to US$137,620. Other credits are available. A marital credit is provided to those leaving U.S. assets to a spouse on death. Foreign tax treaty relief may be available in the form of a credit against Canadian income tax. Small estate relief exempts Canadians from estate tax if their
worldwide gross estate does not exceed US$1.2 million at death, sub-ject to conditions. There are other ways to further minimize or defer U.S. estate tax. The most obvious would be to reduce the estate value to less than US$5.34 million as this would completely elimi-nate U.S. estate tax on deaths in 2014. Similarly, gifting U.S. situs property to cer-tain U.S. charities on death will exempt those assets from U.S. estate tax. Those who own U.S. real estate may wish to
use a non-recourse mortgage to finance it. This effectively allo-cates the liability directly against the value of the U.S. real estate, thereby reduc-ing the value subject to U.S. estate tax. Regarding U.S. equi-ties, Canadians might use a Canadian corpo-ration to own U.S. secu-rities. However, although it excludes the U.S. situs assets on death, it may not always result in tax savings as the taxes on investment income and capital gains could be more than would have been
payable through the U.S. estate tax. Others may elect to re-structure their U.S. equity investments altogether. For instance, they may choose a Canadian mutual fund focused on U.S. equities instead of buying them directly. Such investments are not considered to be U.S. situs property because the mutual fund is essentially con-sidered to be a corpora-tion. Another planning tool is to use life insurance to fund any U.S. estate tax liabilities, but this can be tricky because of some of the rules apply-ing to the unified credit exemption calculation. Clearly, when planning for an integrated solu-tion to U.S. estate tax liabilities, it is wise to work with a qualified U.S. tax expert profi-cient in cross-border issues.

Born in Regina, Ottenbreit has resided in Yorkton for most of his life. Prior to his public service, he was a local entrepreneur, owning and operating a private environmental waste disposal busi-ness, Ottenbreit Waste Systems. Community involve-ment is also important to Ottenbreit. In part-nership with his wife, Leone, the two started Brayden Ottenbreit Close Cuts for Cancer,
an initiative encourag-ing volunteers to shave their heads to raise money for cancer research. In 2005, both Greg and Leone received the Saskatchewan Cen-tennial Medal for their community involve-ment and volunteer-ism. Ottenbreit says he is excited to be part of the team that is moving Saskatchewan forward. “It has been an hon-our to serve my home of Yorkton since 2007.
This community has been so good to my fam-ily in some of the most difficult situations I could imagine, as well as in our past business interests. If given the opportunity, I would love to continue serving the people of my con-stituency and prov-ince.” With Ottenbreit’s nomination as the can-didate for Yorkton, the Saskatchewan Party has nominated 28 can-didates for the next provincial election.

CAMPAIGN SUCCESS! – As a recent Lenten campaign, the community service group at St. Michael’s School in Yorkton organized a silver drive to raise money to go towards building schools in Kenya and India. Every classroom collected coins as they were competing to be the class with the most in donations. Staff challenges also took place and if teachers didn’t hit different milestones, they had to dress up in costumes. There was also a contest to see who could fi nd the marshmallows in the pudding, dancing in front of the school, a rap performance, musical entertainment, and dyed hair! After two weeks a grand total of $2648.94 was raised.

EVENT IS HAPPENING RAIN OR SHINE
It’s great news for Yorkton and area pro-ducers. Richardson Inter-national Limited has announced it has in-creased canola crushing capacity at its process-ing plant in Yorkton by 25 per cent due to continued demand for Canadian canola and canola products. Following a $30 mil-lion expansion project, Richardson’s Yorkton plant began processing 3,000 tonnes of canola per day, an increase from 2,400 tonnes per day, on April 1. The facility now has the ca-pacity to process more than one million tonnes of canola per year. “Combined with strong origination capa-bility through our Rich-ardson Pioneer network across the Prairies, we
are in an excellent posi-tion to keep up with ev-er-growing demand for canola oil,” says Darwin Sobkow, Richardson’s Executive Vice-Presi-dent, Agribusiness Op-erations & Processing. “We opened our York-ton facility just under four years ago and we have continued to re-invest to enhance our operations and improve service to our custom-ers.” Richardson fi rst opened its $170 million, state-of-the-art canola processing facility at Yorkton in June 2010. In addition to expand-ing crush capacity, the recent expansion proj-ect also included up-grades to the plant’s truck receiving system. Richardson added a third truck receiving pit and now offers a ful-
ly automated delivery system to provide cus-tomers with quick and easy access for delivery of their canola.
“Canola is a true Cana-dian success story and we are committed to continuing to increase our presence in the market to meet grow-ing demand for its prod-ucts,” adds Sobkow. Combined with its canola processing plant in Lethbridge, Alberta, Richardson now has the capacity to process ap-proximately 1.5 million tonnes of canola each year. The company also continues to explore op-portunities to increase
canola crushing capac-ity at its Lethbridge plant. Richardson Interna-tional is Canada’s larg-est agribusiness and recognized as a global leader in agriculture and food processing. Based in Winnipeg, Richardson is a world-wide handler and mer-chandiser of all major Canadian-grown grains and oilseeds and a vertically-integrated processor and manu-facturer of oats and canola-based products. One of Canada’s Best Managed Companies, Richardson has over 2,500 employees across Canada and the U.S.
DAMAGING BLAZE – On Tuesday, May 20 at at 6:45 a.m. two adults on a farm in the RM of Wallace, approxi-mately 12 kilometers northeast of Yorkton, were awoken by what was reported to be an explosion-type popping sound. They determined their detached garage was on fi re. They called 911 and Yorkton Fire Department, EMS and Yorkton Rural RCMP responded. The quick response by the Yorkton Fire Department saved the house. Dam-age to the house consisted of exterior damage to the siding and smoke damage inside the house. The detached garage, along with one Jetta car inside and one Jetta car outside the garage, were destroyed by the fi re. The cause is still under investigation. Both occupants of the home are safe and escaped without injury.
Richardson boosts capacity
Improved stewardship Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz and Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart have announced improvements to the Farm Stew-ardship Program. The program provides support for producers to adopt benefi cial management practices that maintain or improve the quality of soil, water, air or biodiversity resources. “Farmers and producers have always been excel-lent stewards of our land, air and water resourc-es,” says Ritz. “The changes being made to this program will enable them to continue producing high-quality agricultural products in a way that is both environmentally responsible and sustainable in the long term.” “The Farm Stewardship Program recognizes that good environmental practices and a success-ful agriculture sector go hand-in-hand,” Stewart adds. “Saskatchewan producers continue to be leaders in environmental stewardship and these improvements will help the industry continue to grow.” The Farm Stewardship Program, with an annual budget of $4.6 million, provides eligible Saskatch-ewan producers assistance to implement practices that ensure the long-term health and sustainabil-ity of their operations, positively impact economic and environmental viability and minimize nega-tive impacts and risk to the environment. New benefi cial management practices added to the Farm Stewardship Program will increase fo-cus on important areas such as precision farming and land management. For more information on the program and Grow-ing Forward 2, please visit the Saskatchewan Ag-riculture website at www.saskatchewan.ca/Grow-ingForward2.

Baby boomers often think of 50 as the new 40. This is especially true now as the last members of the think-young generation reach the half-century mark. With an unprecedented life expectancy of 78.7 years for the youngest of the boomers, we are all being encouraged to incorporate healthy habits to keep our minds beautiful during the second half of life.
The latest science indicates that there are simple, but powerful, steps you can take to help your brain remain strong and healthy as you age. A partnership between the National Center for Creative Aging (NCCA) in Washington, D.C. and the life’sDHAbrand, identifies key lifestyle factors known as the “Four Dimensions of Brain Health” that can make a positive impact throughout life. The campaign, Beautiful Minds: Finding Your Lifelong Potential, names these factors as: diet and nutrition, physical health, mental health and social well-being.
“Keeping the brain healthy is easier than many people realize. Everyday actions such as maintaining a diet including DHA omega-3 and other important nutrients like vitamin E and lutein, as well as staying active physi-cally, mentally and socially, are all good ways to maintain long-term brain health and cognition,” says Dr. Michael Roizen, the co-founder of Real Age Inc. Dr. Roizen is also an author and advisor to the Beautiful Minds campaign.
Here are a few concepts that can help in understanding how to maintain a healthy brain at every age:
The nourished mindMany important dietary nutrients
help to promote brain health, but recent research indicates a potential link between three key nutrients and a reduced risk of cognitive decline. Those nutrients are DHA omega-3, vitamin E and lutein.
For years, research has demonstrated the benefits of DHA in maintaining brain health, yet most people eating a western diet don’t get enough DHA. It can be found naturally in fatty fish such as salmon and ocean trout, along with DHA-fortified foods like juice, milk, eggs, tortillas, yogurt, and algal
DHAsupplements.A study recently published in The
Journal of the American Medical Association showed that vitamin E may positively impact functional perfor-mance among participants with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease. Vitamin E can be found in milk, butter, eggs, vegetable oils, nuts, whole grains, wheat germ and dark leafy greens like spin-ach, and is available as a supplement.
Additionally, new research on lutein, typically known for its benefits to eye health, has found a correlation between positive cognitive function in healthy older people and a diet rich in lutein. Incorporate lutein superfoods into your diet, such as dark leafy green vegetables like kale, spinach, collards and turnip greens, or egg yolks, peas and corn.
The physically active mindResearch has found associations
between physical activity and improved cognitive skills. Engaging in physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day may encourage new brain cells and connections. Take a walk over lunch, take the stairs instead of the elevator, join a club sporting league, or do some-thing you enjoy outdoors.
The mentally engaged mindStudies have suggested that brain
cells, much like muscle cells, can grow bigger and stronger with cognitive chal-lenges and stimulation. People who continue to learn new activities and develop new skills and interests are exercising their brains in ways that may help to build connections in the brain, helping to support brain function.
The socially connected mindEvidence supports the idea that social
connectedness is vital to health, well-ness and longevity. Experts theorize that having a rich social network may also help support brain health in a vari-ety of ways, including providing us with better resources and stimulation. Staying socially connected helps you feel like you’re a part of something whether that is a club, a religious con-gregation or a volunteer group.
