RCMP seek assault suspect If you know who this man is, call the police. On Friday May 18 at 7:30 p.m., a 16 year old female was walking West bound on highway #52 just outside of Yorkton when she was picked up by an unknown male. The suspect propositioned the victim to carry out sexual acts. When the victim refused, the suspect assault-ed her and then abandoned her on the side of the road two km West of Willowbrook on Highway #52. The male suspect was driving a regular cab truck of unknown make from late 1980’s or an early 1990 model. The truck is described as having tinted side windows, dark in colour (possibly black), with two pinstripes grey / white on the side of the truck. The victim described the interior of the truck as clean, missing the radio from the dashboard, with a console in between the two front seats. The suspect is described as hav-ing dark skin, bald with brown eyebrows and no other facial hair. He was wearing glasses, is in his mid 30’s and is approximately 200 lb, 6’ tall. At the time of the inci-dent he was wearing a long sleeve baby blue shirt, jeans and dark brown cowboy boots. If you have information in re-gards to this assault / confi ne-

ment, please contact the Yorkton Rural RCMP at 306-786-4500. If you wish to remain anonymous, call Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, *8477 on SaskTel Mobility, text TIP206 plus your tip to CRIMES (274637), or online at www.saskcrimestoppers.com where you can also view information on other unsolved crimes.

Saskatchewan’s Ag-riculture Minister Lyle Stewart has announced the winners of the 2013 Saskatchewan Agricul-ture Student Scholar-ship – on the list are two names from this area. Ten students from

across the province will each receive a $1,000 scholarship to help pay for their agriculture-related post-secondary education. “More than 50,000 people are employed in agriculture in Sas-

katchewan,” Stewart says. “The opportuni-ties in our vibrant sec-tor are increasing and it is important that youth know about and consider careers in agriculture. The students selected for this scholarship show real potential and have bright futures in the in-dustry.” Applicants were asked to produce a three-min-ute creative video or write a well-researched 750-word essay describ-ing why agriculture, now more than ever, is a vi-brant, diverse industry. They also provided let-ters of recommendation from a teacher, agricul-ture industry leader or community leader. The winners of the scholar-ship are:

• Kaitlyn Polegi, Jed-burgh • Samantha McKee, Turtleford • Bethany Harland, Frenchman Butte • Sheldon Moellen-beck, Humboldt • Sydney Lake, Turtle-ford • Ryan Olson, Pen-zance • Bailey Wilson, Tu-gaske • Kenton May, River-hurst • Brett Bowes, Kam-sack • Jonathan Neigum, Unity For more information on the Saskatchewan Ag-riculture Student Schol-arship and to view the winning submissions, visit www.agriculture.gov.sk.ca/scholarship.

A ‘diamond in the rough,’a tribute to Neil Diamond

Good times have never seemed so good for this Neil Diamond imperson-ator. Joey Purpura’s vocal im-personation of the famous singer will be reachin’ out and touchin’ you as he brings his show to the Yorkton Legion Friday, May 31. There is a general feel-ing that’s evoked in the show, Purpura says. See-ing people happy. “I had no idea how be-loved Diamond is. And I had no idea how powerful

his music was – and still is – to people,” he said. Seeing Diamond fans light up and seeing audi-ence members smile or cry when they hear his ballads. He says this as a satis-fying part of his job. “Re-sponse is so good that I always get invited back wherever I perform.” Purpura says his musi-cal career as a Neil Dia-mond tribute artist began when he went to a kara-oke night. “I was introduced to

karaoke about 12 years ago by a friend. I took to it immediately, especially since I could now work on vocal impersonations.” He can also imperson-ate other artists, such as Elton John, Gordon Light-foot, James Taylor and Scott Stapp, but his busy schedule hasn’t allowed him to showcase them yet. “I haven’t been able to produce other acts yet. I’ve done a few shows with different voices, but not regularly,” he concludes. Diamond in the Rough: The Neil Diamond Trib-ute Show is coming to the Yorkton Legion Friday, May 31 at 8 p.m. To buy tickets for the show, please call the Legion or pick up tick-ets at the Legion club room. Tickets are $20 ad-vance/$25 door, Call (306) 783-4332.

NEIL DIAMOND impersonator will be bringing his new show: Diamond in the Rough, to Yorkton on May 31.

It’s 100 year celebra-tion and you are invited. Members, leaders, sup-porters and 4-H alumni from across Canada will be gathering in Winnipeg next week to celebrate the organization’s 100th Anniversary gala style. If you are interested you too can attend. “In an age when orga-nizations seem to come and go in a short span of time, the longevity of the 4-H movement is some-thing worth celebrating,” says 4-H President Rob Black. “Since 1913, two million young Canadi-ans have been members of our clubs and have taken part in hundreds of thousands of projects focused on giving them the opportunity to learn to do by doing.” The main part of the event is a special gala planned for Thursday, May 30 at the Fairmont Winnipeg. The event

will celebrate the impor-tance of food production and sustainability as well as the role of youth as future leaders in feed-ing a growing world population. Dr. Bondar, Canada’s fi rst female as-tronaut, will be the key-note speaker. On May 31 a “Night at the Museum” will be held in Roland, Manitoba, the birthplace of the 4-H movement. For tickets or more in-formation, visit: www.4-h-canada.ca, email: [email protected] or call (613) 234-4448, ext. 26.

Robert(Bob) Carmen Bannister passed away, unexpectedly, in his sleep at St Joseph's General Hos-pital in Comox BC on 30 Novem-ber 2012. He was predeceased by his wife Doreen, and is sur-vived by his daughters Don-na(Mike) & Brenda(Ralph), grand-sons Kyle(Stephanie), Kurt & Brett and great granddaughter Alexia.Robert Carmen Bannister was born in the County of Brant in On-tario on October 20, 1929, the son of Stanley and Florence (nee Vivian). Bannister. Bob was raised on the family farm near Wil-sonville ON. In Aug. 1948, he was accepted into the RCMP and be-gan his training in Regina. He fin-ished his training in 1949, and was sent to "F" division in Regina and then to the Melville Detachment. While attached to Melville, he took his mounted training (Musical Ride) in Regina, assisted with the Winnipeg flood that year, as well as taking motorcycle training in Calgary. In 1950, he was trans-ferred to Kamsack for a year, and while there, met Doreen Brown. He was then moved to Langen-burg, finishing in Foam Lake in 1952. He was accepted to the Po-lice Dog Section and transferred to Sydney NS. He was given a Po-lice Service Dog named Ranger and returned to Yorkton in 1953. Bob married Doreen Brown, in Kamsack, on November 15, 1953. Over the years, Bob and Doreen moved at the whim of the RCMP. They started their married lives in Yorkton, until the birth of their daughter Donna in 1956. The family was posted back to Kam-sack for one year then, moved on to Esterhazy, where their second daughter, Brenda, was born in 1958. The Bannister family was sent back to Yorkton in 1959, moving to Melville in 1961, then on to Fillmore in 1963, and Eston in 1967. During the summer of 1967, Bob was in charge of Con-federation Truck Caravan #7 and traveled around Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Bob retired from the RCMP in 1968, and they de-cided to call Regina home. There he was employed in the insurance business until 1973, when the family moved to Woodstock ON. The Bannisters would call Wood-stock home until 1997, then Bob and Doreen returned to Yorkton to enjoy their retirement and be clos-er to Doreen's Mother, who was then living in a nursing home in Kamsack. Doreen passed away in 2007, and Bob remained in York-ton until 2011, when he moved to Comox to be near his daughters, who had both been moved, at dif-ferent times, by the Canadian Forces, to that location. In accordance with Bob's wishes, there will be no service and his ashes will be interred next to Do-reen's, at the RCMP Depot Ceme-tery in Regina, Saskatchewan on Monday, June 24th at 11:00am.
