A letter from the

Dear IPSFers,

As you know the 60th IPSF World Congress, Porto 2014, will start in 4 days and the spirit could not be higher and the stress factor is increasing exponentially! These 4 remaining days represent the finish line of a two year period of preparations for the 60th IPSF World Congress, 2014 Porto! Since the 58th IPSF World Congress, Hurghada, Egypt when the bid was won by AEFFUP, the RC is giving on a daily basis a great effort to set a quality mark on every piece of the World Congress.

Probably the most exciting thing to bear in mind is the possibility of getting in touch with 650 students and sharing all experiences but we are pretty confident that your experience in Portugal will be unique and totally awesome for the culture itself and being synergic with the famous IPSF spirit. At the very least, we honestly hope that you can have the same feeling as the RC members who have been in Utrecht or Hurghada: “Saudade”! Saudade 3is a very Portuguese word, only used by Portuguese natives, that names the feeling of missing something really hard and having really nice memories of it.

Behind the scenes, all Helping Committee and Reception Committee members are working at full speed to have everything ready for one of most important congress ever. As you know, besides being the 60th edition of the World Congress, this year IPSF is celebrating his 65th anniversary as well as AEFFUP is celebrating the 85th anniversary. So raise your glasses, celebrations are coming!

As you know, the Congress will officially start with Leaders in Training (LIT). With almost 20

participants and different trainers will provide workshops and trainings with the clear purpose of defining the tomorrows’ leaders. All participants will be submitted onto an interactive program that primarily aims to train pharmacy students who are interested in taking up leadership roles on different levels.

After this program ends and during 10 days something special will happen. The educational and scientific program of the congress with 118 slots of workshops (yes, 118!) will be something to be really eager and proud after accomplished. Having so many workshops gives every participant the possibility to assess and choose the best agenda for the World Congress.

Since Portugal is not so big in size, it will be possible to take you throughout the whole country and show you the best parts. Portugal is full of diversity, so you’ll see everything from big cities full of history to breathe taking beaches and natural sights - mountains, plains, rivers... We’ll try to give you true portuguese experiences, those that tourists don’t usually get. You’ll be able to feel the pulse of Portugal, such only felt by those who have been here and understand what it is that anchors our souls here!

This is your oPORTOnity and I’ll really hope that this experience makes you love Porto as much as we do.

Dearest friends from around the world!

Kindly accept the warmest regards from the 59th Executive Committee of the International Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation (IPSF). Having begun our term in October 2013, it has not yet been a long journey, but it always brings us back to where it all started – the World Congress.

I first met IPSF in Slovenia at the 56th IPSF World Congress and continued my journey through the subsequent 3 Congresses in Thailand, Egypt and the Netherlands. Each event, though providing different experiences, was unique in their own way and just epic. All of them shared something in common – something that would make me say “awesome!” not later than 30 min-utes upon my arrival and would eventually produce the feeling of excitement for the next edi-tion before the current one had even officially started. It is the atmosphere that speaks to the global friendship, unity, mutual respect, worldwide health policy and progressive programme as well as that of pharmacy future knowing its decision would go down in the history of the profession, regardless of any educational or cultural background one may originate from.

Here comes the time for

Would it be any different? Yes and no. The same atmosphere and principles, that have defined IPSF since 1948 when the first attempts to establish the Federation were made, are not likely to change. We will all meet again for friendship, sharing scientific development and professional initiatives with each other and distinguished guests who are experts and leaders in their re-spective fields. On the other hand – this booklet provides overview of all the uniqueness that the 60th IPSF World Congress will bring! At the following pages, you will meet the Reception Committee and find the details about the events and programmes that will be offered in Porto, Portugal in August 2014 along with the cultural beauty of the host site.

The 60th IPSF World Congress will be exceptional for the Federation and for me personally. Not only does it mark the end of my second mandate, but it also marks 65 years of the Federation’s history. Therefore, get ready for something special and meanwhile enjoy reading this booklet! With my invitation to experience this truly life-changing opportunity I look forward to seeing you all this coming summer in the bottom-left corner of Europe. On behalf of the University of Porto and myself, I would like to welcome the participants of The 60th IPSF World Congress.

We look forward to having you here and will make sure that your stay in Porto will be pleasant and that your visit to our University will be enriching. Discovering Porto will bring you many sur-prises. For those who visit the city, you can find traces of the medieval period; many works of art from the Romance and Baroque styles; neo-classical and neo-gothic buildings; the old part of the city by the riverside, which was the reason why it received the World Heritage title; some of the finest contemporary architecture and the bridges linking the margins of the Douro River.

Although the origins of the University of Porto date back to the 18th century, it was formally established on the 22nd of March 1911. Today our institution is one of the largest Portuguese universities. With about 32,000 students, the University consists of 14 faculties and a business school covering all major areas of knowledge. It has 60 certified research units and is respon-sible for more than 20% of the Portuguese scientific production indexed in the ISIS Web of Science.

For all these reasons, the University of Porto is catching up with the top 100 European univer-sities. We are on the path to building a highly recognised research university, generating soci-oeconomic development and offering excellent training. Therefore, dear students, take full advantage of everything that the city and the University of Porto have to offer.

geNeral assemblyThe General Assembly (GA) is the highest decision making body of IPSF and consists on the representatives of IPSF member organisations, the IPSF Executive Committee and any invited guests. The GA meets annually to discuss all ongoing matters and plans of the Federation, to

accept reports and to elect new Executive Committee. GA is chaired by IPSF President.

Only organizations which maintain the Full Membership are allowed to vote during the GA. The Members in Association and Individual Members do not have a voting right in the GA, but are strongly welcomed to participate in discussions.

Each Congress attendant has the right to speak at the GA.

A motion is a proposal coming from the members or the Executive that will be presented for discussion during the GA. A motion suggests and/or approves projects and the direction that IPSF will follow regarding a particular point that has been discussed earlier. As well, they are used to amend and/or approve documents. If a motion is approved, it is mandatory for the Executive to make sure that its content is put into action.

At every GA session two Scrutineers have to be present. The Scrutineers help the Executive and Motions Committee to ensure the GA runs smoothly. This means for example assisting in passing on microphones, handing out voting cards and counting votes. The Scrutineers are appointed by the GA.

what to KNow

The IPSF Official Documents give guidance to the Federations’ structure and procedures. They are sort of “IPSF law” and therefore have to be obeyed by the Executive, Officials and all the members of the Federation. The most updated version of the Official Documents has been distributed to the congress participants before the event.

First of all, you must read the IPSF Official Documents.

As a Contact Person:

Please read the CP handbook carefully. You should also be familiar with the Congress Folder and any documents relating to the Congress.

As a Student Exchange Officer:

Please revise the SEP Official Documents. There will be SEO workshop where problems from this past year and their possible solutions will be discussed.

As an Official Delegate:

Please get familiar with any materials related to the Congress you will receive in advance.

There will be an individual Official Delegate´s Interview on Day 0 for every delegation. In addition there will be an introduction to procedures at the GA on Day 0; Please make sure to come prepared and book the appointment for the interview at the Registration desk.

Members Poster Competition Annual Awards

On Day 1 of the Congress a meeting of all Contact Persons will be held with Jason Hong, Chairperson of Internal Relations to discuss the past year and your needs. Don’t forget to bring your questions!

During the Educational Symposium breaks Member Organisations will present their organisation and activities including campaigns, events and involvement with IPSF. This will be a creative platform to exchange ideas for your new activities. All the participants that have signed up for the Members Poster Competition should bring their posters on day 3 of the Congress.

Two Annual Awards will be awarded during this Congress: The Sidney J. Relph Award for the best performing Member Organisation and the Otto Föcking Award to the most accomplished New Member Organisation. All Members could apply for this award. Watch out for the best and get inspired by their excellent performance throughout the past year.

This year in Porto we will be hosting a huge and complex Cardiovascular Screening in the center of Porto where pharmacy students will be able to measure health parameters and educate general Portuguese population or tourists on a variety of topics including Hypertension, Diabetes, and Hyperlipidemia. Patients will go to different booths to get their levels checked and discuss ways to control and prevent future complications.

The screenings end with a Zumba Dance Class to get everyone moving and aware of the importance of physical exercise.

The PHC will take place on 5th of August but in order to participate you must sign up at www.2014.ipsf.org/phc and you should also attend the preparation workshop on 2nd of August.

As the years go by, the Public Health Campaign have been gaining importance and prominence during

the IPSF World Congress.

proFessioNal developmeNt eveNts

Compounding EventThis is the most recent event, counting with only one edition so far! The purpose of this competition is to reflect on formulation/compounding work that pharmacists usually do. The challenge lies on the participant develop the best method to prepare a formulation taking into consideration the study case. Join this event and show us the mastermind of compounding that lives inside you!

Patient Counseling EventThe Patient Counseling Event tries to show the importance of pharmaceutical guidance and to improve our role as pharmacists in public health, encouraging and promoting the development of our profession, which should have a more active role within the society. The participants from each country will compete against each other in a small simulation, where they will have to advise the patient, showing their skills and putting into practice real pharmaceutical care.

Clinical Skills EventThis concept was developed by the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists (ASHP). This event was created to encourage students to practice and develop their clinical skills through problem solving and, of course, to promote the pharmacist role when it comes to patient care. The Clinical Skills Event (CSE) focuses in helping the participant to use his clinical knowledge to solve and improve drug therapies of patients.

For the 1st time during an IPSF World Congress

alumNi eveNt

This event is intended for former IPSFers who want to experience the fantastic atmosphere of an IPSF World Congress again and wish to visit our wonderful city.

7th - 10th August.

Every participant should manage to arrive at Porto until the morning of 7th August since Welcoming Lunch will take place at 1 p.m.. All the participants will have free transportation from the airport or train station to the “IPSF town”. During the afternoon, the participants and their accompanying will have the opportunity to explore Porto.

On 8th August, all participants (Alumni and Accompanying Person) will have the opportunity to participate on the Congress Excursion Day.

On 9th August the Alumni Participants will be called to speak about their past experiences as an IPSFer on the Alumni Forum. Alternatively, on this day the Alumni Participant can opt to attend the General Assembly.

At last, on 10th August the departures will take place. Please notice that the Alumni Participants and their accompanying persons could participate in the Post Congress Tour starting on this day.Every participant will have free access to the social programme of the congress.

To be considered an Alumni you must fill one of the following requirements: 1. Have been involved in IPSF before, within the IPSF team.2. To be an Honorary Life Members (HLM) .3. Have been a Regional Working Group (RWG) member, a Contact Person (CP) or an Official Delegate (OD) before. 4. Attended at least 3 IPSF events: Regional Symposium or World Congress.

The Alumni participant can attend and get involved on the General Assembly as also being part of the brand new Alumni Forum where they and can be invited to talk about their experiences during their IPSF time.

In Porto, the 60th IPSF World Congress – “Science into practice, practice through science”, will have the most present and important themes and issues regarding the pharmaceutical area. The health sector is changing nowadays, and the role of the pharmacists is getting more important in a translational way, which means that the several professionals of the health systems have to work together, in order to establish what the best is for the patient.

“Professional recognition of pharmacists through education” is the main theme for the Educational Symposium. With this starting point, on day 3 (3rd, August) of the congress, pharmacy students, and pharmacists as well, will have the opportunity to learn and discuss with world top speakers, with final debates.

The following day (4th August) will take place the Scientific Symposium - “Translational Pharmaceutical Sciences: from the bench to the patient bedside”. The most relevant pharmaceutical scientists will present their most recent and innovative research and knowledge, preparing the participants and professionals to a new perspective of the pharmaceutical job, from the research news, passing to the several stages of medicine’s production, to the patient bedside.

This ceremony officially opens the congress and welcomes all the participants to the biggest pharmacy students event of the year. The Opening Ceremony will include the official welcome by the Chairperson of the congress Mr. Luís Azevedo, IPSF President Mr. Radoslaw Mitura and AEFFUP President Mr. João Pedro Souto and other important personalities, followed by the flags ceremony where each IPSF Full Member will get the flag of the country they are representing. We will be waiting for you at Herança Magna for this beautiful ceremony!

Bring your chemical knowledge to the

on Boulevard Aliados, one of the most

known night clubs in Oporto. The main

objective of this party is to gather

several elements of the periodic table

(each person will be a different one)

to form a molecule (it must be a valid

The last social event of the congress is all about having fun one last time before the goodbye. It is going to be a fancy and classy dinner and it is one of the most emblematic nights for be-ing the last one. The main aim of this event is not to cry during the whole gala – (:p). It is going to be a night to celebrate and you may drink and dance until late hours at this spectac-ular evening.

The Gardens of Palácio de Cristal (Crystal Palace) is a magnificent park from where you can enjoy the fantastic panoramic views of the Douro River and the Atlantic Sea accompanied by a delightful sunset.

The colors seen from there are just beautiful. It is perfect to spend Sunday morning having your breakfast and reading a good book while laid down on the grass and subtly hearing the sounds of Mother Nature.

The name of these gardens came from the Crystal Palace that it was built in the same place in the 1860’s. In 1956 the building was substituted by Pavilhao Rosa Mota, a huge pavilion with its own complex architecture.

The Rosa Mota pavilion, as well as the romantic Gardens of Palácio de Cristal have always been a special background for various events – Music concerts, outdoor cinema, art exposures...

During the visit to the Gardens you will be able to see exotic plants and rare large trees, rose gardens, fountains, a pond

with many birds and animals.

The Faculty of Pharmacy - Uni-versity of Porto (FFUP), is the oldest pharmacy faculty in Portugal. It was first established in 1921 and since then it is considered one of the most pres-tigious pharmacy schools in the world. During 91 years, students from FFUP had lectures in the same place - a huge and old building with old furniture and a beautiful stained glass. In 1975 it actually burn down, but we managed to survive! Even though we are not having classes in the same place since 2012, the first FFUP’s building is still an historical monument and it means a lot for today students. Every year, it is organized a “school trip” for the freshmen, to en-lighten them about old, to be caught by the beauty of the old building and to transmit its importance.

Although the old faculty was beautiful, the truth is that was becom-ing too old and too small for the num-ber of students – we needed to move urgently! And BAM! In 2012, FFUP stu-dents were blessed with brand new and shiny facilities. Today we share three buildings with the faculty of Health Sciences (Medicine, Veterinary and Aquatic Sciences). Besides the Health Sciences fac-ulty, we have also curious neighbours that inhabit the nearby gardens we have right by the faculty side. The beautiful gardens of Palácio de Cristal (“Crystal Palace”) are ruled by several birds, including peacocks, gooses and ducks. Unfortunately, gooses can’t fly so high and that’s why they are not so neighbours as their relatives…

Known as the European West Coast, Portugal is a marvelous place, full of great mysteries and amazing stories. The history of Portugal could always count with different and incredible episodes, full of love, adventure, mystery, betrayals, fantastic journeys and enormous conquests.

The best part is that, all of it is actually portrayed in real facts! Portugal has plenty of castles, books written by the bravest man on a ship, who told people the whole quest! We have great musicians and even a world heritage music style: Fado. Besides, no one can resist the magnificent portuguese sights, which offer a uniquely diverse and exciting range of cultures, climates, and landscapes. From the sunny white-sand beaches of Algarve, to the restful Alentejo, the gorgeous sceneries of the Center and North, the tropical-like Madeira Islands and the one-of-a-kind Azores Islands.

This “world” of traditions always kept Portuguese people close to each other. In fact, we’re well known to be kind, welcoming, tender and friendly people, always ready to help others and to welcome tourists the best way we can.

Portugal has always been well represented in the arts. Famous poets include Luís de Camões and Fernando Pessoa. No less creative are the talents of the international football star Cristiano Ronaldo. During the month of June, festivities dedicated to three saints known as Santos Populares (popular saints) take place all over the country. They are characterized by folk dance and music, particularly the traditional Fado.

the couNtry oF the 3 F’sThis is one of the best things to experience in Portugal. It is almost impossible not to fall in love with all the Portuguese gastronomy. Each different Portuguese district has its own special dishes and they are all so tasteful with divine flavors: the marvelous and tender Portuguese meat from the southern places to the best fresh fish and shellfish of the Atlantic Ocean.No doubt that the Portuguese menu is real-ly elaborated and complex. Our cuisine al-ways accompanied the big events in the country and it has been influenced by the em-igration, immigration and all the colonial ex-ploration from the early years. Another great aspect of the Portuguese gastronomy is the fish abundance and the sophisticated sauc-es and spices. Definitely, a world to explore!

This music style is starting to be known all over the world. Great names such as Amália Rodrigues and Mariza have been heard in dif-ferent continents and we are proud to say that Fado is considered a World Heritage!Fado can be classified in two styles. The name of each style came from the city where it was born: Fado de Coimbra and Fado de Lisboa.Despite of their differences, there are some things they have in common: The way the feel-ing is transmitted to the public by the singer and the delicate sound of a weeping portuguese guitar (portuguese instrument, played in Fado).

Portuguese people are definitely crazy about football! It is part of our tradition to gather everyone in a bar or in a coffee shop to watch our local teams playing against other ones. The friendly created environment is really appellative. Porto has its own local team: Futebol Clube do Porto! After all, who doesn’t know the famous Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo??

Call for Participants

The IPSF Pharmacy Education Committee cordially invites all congress participants who wants to inspire their fellow pharmacy students from all around the world.

Applying presenters must be registered participants of the 60th IPSF World Congress, Porto, Portugal. The content of presentation can be about new innovative ideas to be adopted, issues to be passionate about, or original projects to be implemented. Anything is possible, it only needs to be inspiring.

Presenters will be given 7 minutes to try to inspire the audiences with their ideas/issues/projects. A selected panel of jury will provide direct feedback to the participants based on their performance. At the end of the session audiences will get to vote and decide who the Most Inspiring Participant is. The 2nd IPSF Young Researchers’ Forum Call for Abstracts

The IPSF Pharmacy Education Committee cordially invites all congress participants to present their research project in a form of short oral presentation as a part of The 2nd IPSF Young Researchers’ Forum.

Applying presenters must be registered participants of the 60th IPSF World Congress. Content of the presentation can be primary research, secondary research or a review on a specific topic relevant to pharmacy practice or pharmaceutical science.

Presenters will be given 10 minutes to present their research project in front of the audiences. Among the audiences, a selected panel of jury will provide direct feedback to the participants on different aspects of presentation; communication and presentations skills and material used for presentation. The best presentation will be decided based on the evaluation of the jury. Application Guidelines: 1. Submit your abstract by e-mail to [email protected] not later than Saturday, 26th of July 2014

with the subject line as follow “Young Researchers’ Forum 2014, [Name of Presenter], [Country]”.

2. Abstracts shall be written in English 3. Abstract shall consist of:

That’s right, we are that great. This name dates from Roman times, when Lusitanian settlements straddled both sides of river Douro’s banks. This area was owned by Muslins who had named it as Portucale, but around 1000 AC it was reconquered and reorganized as the county of Portucale, with Porto as its capital. It was from here that the Portuguese hero Afonso Henriques launched the Reconquista (Christian reconquest), finally winning Portugal its status as an independent Kingdom! Go Henriques!

But enough about history! Here you’ll be able to see the most magnificent Sunsets at Rio Douro, medieval relics, baroque churches and all of this by zigzagging through our narrow streets. Porto even has an “Unesco World Heritage Site”! The Ribeira district is where tripeiros (Porto inhabitants) mingle in the old houses of commerce, where roman ruins lurk beneath foundations. By night, it’s a lively place for the young to congregate and pass a good time.Oh, and for the ones who love our wine, you have scores of cellars by the riverside of Vila Nova de Gaia, where you can hear all about its history! But, of course we’ll forgive you if all you’ll remember most after are the quiet moments: the laundry lines drying in the river winds; the sound of wineglasses clinking under a full moon, a crumbling wall full with a top notch graffiti; or even the amusing conversations between neighbors from house to house.

Let’s begin by saying that Porto put the “Portu” in Portugal.

The participants are going to be distributed on 3 residencies, but don’t worry because it won’t be random! We will take in consideration the importance of having all the Official Delegates of each Association together so they can gather easily. During your stay you may find some features in your residency that will be very hand-ful. For example, if you’re running out of fresh clothes you can do your laundry on your residency with a simple cost of 2€ (don’t tell anyone, but the laundry machine is so big that you can share with someone else and the price becomes 1€!)

Internet connection is also available in every residency.

The rooms are distributed per corridors and each one of these have a common area where you can get along with your “neighbors”.

The cleaning service is not available, although you will be given new clean sheets by the half of the congress.

post coNgress tourSince Portugal is not so big in size, it will be possible to take you throughout the whole country and show you the best parts. As we mentioned, Portugal is full of diversity, so you’ll see everything from big cities full of history to breathtaking beaches and natural sights - mountains, plains, rivers... We’ll definitely take you to Lisbon and other important cities, as Guimarães, Coimbra or Sintra. We’ll try to give you true portuguese experiences, those that tourists don’t usually get. You’ll be able to feel the pulse of Portugal, such only felt by those who have been here and understand what it is that anchors our souls here!

First of all you will be able to connect to Portugal’s History in a different way. In Santa Maria da Feira, the first city to be visited, you will visit a medieval fair where you will have the opportunity to see some historical reenactment shows.

In Guimarães you will learn a little bit more about Portugal’s history! Did you always dream with princess fairytales? Well then, in this city you will get into some of the images of your dreams. We say that “Aqui nasceu Portugal” (come on, pick a dictionary and start learning some Portuguese words) because it was here where our first king was born.


35To attenuate the cultural episodes we are planning a mountain adventure in Gerês. Have you ever heard about the Portuguese adrenaline? Look at the pic-tures and imagine yourself in that role.

Aveiro is the Portuguese venetian city. We will take you into a Moliceiro jour-ney and into the tasteful experience of eating Ovos Moles (or smooth eggs) the traditional dessert of this region.

In Coimbra we will show you the whole Portugal in a thematic park named “Portugal dos Pequenitos”. As the name says, you will learn about this wonderful country seeing differ-ent constructions in a small size. Also we will show you the historic center of Coimbra, full of university students secrets and unique experiences. Co-imbra is considered the city of the stu-dents since it has the oldest university of the country and you can feel the true student spirit in every corner.

Lisbon is our capital and of course we won’t let you leave our country without visiting it. This city is plenty of different aspects and places you can explore. We will show you the most emblematic places and then we will let you discover it by yourself in a free day. We will be glad to help you planning this day or go along with you in your journey. At the end we will give a little “lisboeta” surprise that you won’t want to miss!

At the end of this tempting tour we will take you to Algarve, one of the places on earth with the best beach-es and nightlife events! We will show you the recent classified best beach of the world and you be able to try some nautical activities in our sea! What do you say about a surf class or a “ba-nana” trip? Don´t be embarrassed by your presumable lack of ability to this activities, we assure you: none of us is better than you!

For those who are still thinking this trip will be just based in culture and sightseeing, don´t be deluded: we are planning parties and social events every single day. You’ll be able to meet new people and experience any feeling you’re expecting to.

During the 31st August (only!) there will be a shuttle specially provided for congress participants to be picked up at the airport and the main railway station in Porto and be brought to the congress registration The schedule of the bus is from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Any participant that might arrive after or earlier the bus time schedule will be handled separately and the transportation will not be assured. Whatever the case is, if your flight is out of the bus schedule you should email the logistics department at [email protected].

After arriving at FFUP, you will proceed with your registration where we will confirm your data, receive your souvenirs/items for the auction night, a congress pack will be also provided as well as the room attribution. During the registration you must have with you your ID Card/Passport and a caution of 50€ (that will be returned at the end of the course as long as any rules were not disrespected). After it the participants will be transported to the Opening Ceremony. This transportation is only available from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m and it will not be provided beyond this timeframe.

The day 0 of the congress requires 100% efficiency by the OC and it is impossible to give the same service to any participant that arrives out of the schedule. However, the OC will make sure that each participant will get the best possible attention.

A single look of panic from you and you will gather a horde of helping people. But now seriously, Portuguese are known for their kindness, welcoming spirit and their more or less knowledge of the English language. Therefore we thought we could give you some points in that matter.When you arrive in a new country and you meet new people, the question “How do you say...” is always present! Oporto vs. Porto – just to make it clear, both names refer to the same city. Porto is the Portuguese name, Oporto in English. Yes, it’s silly that they’re so close – only 1 letter difference. But, as it happens, the Brits didn’t understand that the “O” they placed before “Porto” is actually the masculine article in Portuguese, placed before the name of the city. They assumed this “O” was part of the name.

We rarely drink Porto wine – that’s for tourists. But of course we all have one very good expensive bottle at home, which we only use for special occasions with family or

friends.

You almost never see people on bicycle in Porto. It’s not because we don’t like it, but look: this place has steep-er hills than San Francisco! But feel free to try. Drivers are quite polite and it’s free to take bikes onto the Metro and suburban trains… and it’s quite flat by the riverside and at the seaside.

We all get crazy at São João, our city festival on the night of June 23rd, when we cel-ebrate the saint who guards over Porto. The city centre and riverside are amazing-ly full of people dancing to popular music, drinking and eating grilled sardines and smashing each other on the head with plastic hammers! No kidding. But we love it!

‘A galinha da vizinha é sempre melhor do que a minha’ is a typical Portu-guese saying that means ‘my neighbour’s chicken is always better than mine’. Yep, we like to complain. And we’re never satisfied with that we have. Com-plaining is the national sport in Portugal. It’s like the Fado thing: we know Portugal was great, but that’s the past…

We like to go out, but we start late. So don’t be surprised to find the bar empty at 10:00 and the club not yet filled at 2:00 or 3:00. We’re probably still at the dinner table or starting off with a drink at some-body’s flat. Come back later and the whole city will be stuffed with party people! But what’s that card for – the one they gave me when I entered the club? Well, when you go to order a drink the barman will ask you for it and will write what you had. At the end of the night, you pay for everything at the same time and give the card back to the doorman when you want to leave – so don’t destroy or lose it!

Where’s everybody? On Sundays Porto is dead – most restaurants and cafes are closed, and so are most shops, bars and clubs. What to do on a Sunday then? Museums are open and the parks and beaches are crowded if the weather’s nice. But what families re-ally like is window shopping at one of the multitude of huge shopping malls spread on the outskirts.

Eat a lot! Eating is not about feeding your-

self, but pleasure and culture. In the morn-

ing we start with strong coffee and a sweet

pastel de nata, then we go to a tasca to get

Arroz de Cabidela (rice with chicken cooked

in blood). Around 16:00-17:00 you need

another coffee and a croissant. A good din-

ner could be Iscas de Bacalhau… and later,

when going out, we get a Bifana. A lot of

calories, but still, we’re not fat. Yeah, it’s

all about metabolism… Keep in mind eat-

ing schedules are quite strict in Portugal.

It’s possible to find a place serving dinner

until late – for example at 22:00 or 23:00,

but don’t even think of showing up before

20:00. It’s uncommon to get lunch out-

side of typical lunch hours (12:00 to 15:00

at the latest) as most restaurants are not

even open. Apart from that, cafés and bak-

eries are all over the city and you can have

breakfast or an afternoon bite anytime from

very early morning until 19:00-20:00.
