PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

When it rains it pours… literally and metaphorically! Our grassy playground has enjoyed the extra watering and continues to grow well. Teachers and students are engrossed in inspiring classroom activities and the growth in learning is exciting to witness… As I wander through many of our classrooms each day I am constantly amazed by our students and teachers. Our Kindies are now ‘old hands’ and used to the patterns and curiosities of school. Our Year 6, leaders of our school culture, have been setting the standard for behaviour, academic achievement and social interactions with others through our playground Ridgy-Didge Buddies program and through spreading kindness and care to their younger schoolmates. The outstanding reading comprehension, problem-solving persistence and ‘courage’ to take risks in learning from our students that I have witnessed this week is awesome. Keep it up, Ironbarkers! Talking Data Teachers at Ironbark Ridge have always used student assessment as an important part of the ‘Teaching and Learning Cycle’, however our focus on collective efficacy, differentiation and growth has led to far richer and more targeted conversations about data. (The Teaching and Learning Cycle is explained in a diagram to the right… and is not a new concept in any way.) In 2019, during our weekly teaching team Collaborative Planning Conferences, classroom teachers are using data about student learning and growth to continually adjust their teaching plans and to ask inquiry-minded questions. We are using a case-management approach when investigating individual student growth and achievement. The value of the collective wisdom and creativity of the team is already reaping huge benefits in the classroom, with teachers reporting more clarity in their own minds about the specific strategies they are employing with individual students in their classes, but

also talking excitedly about the extra growth these students are already making. Explicit teaching has been shown by research to have a huge impact on student growth, and the collective minds of our teaching teams are demonstrating increased ability to analyse assessment data, then specifically target our students’ many and varied needs. The Ironbark teaching team is such a dynamic and dedicated group to work with! Well done, guys! Day of Action – Bullying, No Way! Today we recognised the National Day of Action against bullying and violence by discussing bullying behaviours, strategies to stop them, and by committing as a school to making Ironbark Ridge a “Bullying, No Way” zone. Understanding the differences between teasing, an angry reaction, and bullying is important, as a touch of kindness and space to cool off will usually solve disagreements. Bullying is ongoing, is intentionally hurtful, and involves an imbalance of power or control. Bullying is never OK. Our student leadership team have worked hard over the past weeks to create a video episode for Ironbark Ridge TV, posters and classroom resources to support our teachers in building a good understanding amongst our students about anti-bullying strategies. Ridgy the Frog even put in an appearance to help students chant “Bullying. No Way!” in the playground today! Students today received wristbands and cards to bring home reminding everyone that the Ironbark Ridge culture does not allow for bullying behaviours at any time... even online! Have a chat at home this weekend to continue the conversation with your children. Feel free also to watch our short Ironbark Ridge TV episodes: https://youtu.be/jwQS_rUkwg8 or https://youtu.be/O1tYrcDbSiE Staff news In exciting news, two of our classroom teachers - Ms Kirstin Heyes (3K) and Ms Christina Lee (1L) have recently been made permanent teachers as part of the Ironbark Ridge staff. Both have been teaching as ‘temp teachers’ for some time with us. Ms Heyes achieved ‘Merit Selection’ through application and nerve-wracking interview, while Ms Lee is a ‘first-round draft pick’ from the select bunch of recent university graduates who have achieved targeted status. The move from a temporary contract to a permanent position with the Dept. of Education is a wonderful achievement for them both… and a marvellous ‘score’ for our students, school and community. Election Day BBQ/Cakes/Books – 23rd March As I know everyone is so keen to exercise their democratic-once-every-four-years right to vote, everyone will be up at school sometime next Saturday 23rd March to vote and… in collaboration with our wonderful P&C we will be holding a traditional Election Day BBQ, Cake Stall and 2nd-hand Book sale – a fund-raising opportunity to reach outside our learning community into the local community at large! We are seeking your support as volunteers for an hour or so in a roster for the day. Voting starts at 8am and we’ll be firing up the BBQ from 7.30am until after lunch, so please consider helping our school and P&C – add your name to the roster (you can visit the P&C Fb page or phone our school Admin Office.) Outdoor Movie Night – reminder It’s only two weeks away! On Saturday evening 30th March our fun, family Outdoor Movie Night will be held on our grass playing area. Please join us all for food vans and a giant outdoor movie screen so we can sit together and watch Incredibles 2. Bring a blanket or camp chair to sit on. This is another family-oriented night organised simply to give our community a chance to gather here at school and get to know each other a bit more. This is part of our Connected Community focus at Ironbark Ridge. Sporting Reps. A number of Ironbark Ridge student sports-stars have been successful at the highly competitive and difficult selection trials held so far for Ridges Zone teams to compete in Sydney West Area tournaments this year:

• Football/Soccer – Jordan • Rugby League – Daniel, Puatonga and Chais • AFL – Alex and Liam • Netball – Indya

Well done also to our swimmers from this week’s Sydney West carnival! See the special reports later in the newsletter for full outstanding details. Wow! Class Contacts A special meeting of all Class Contacts will be held next week on Tuesday evening 19th March from 6.00pm in the school Library. It is important for all Class Contacts to attend this meeting as we will discuss the expectations and responsibilities of this special class communication role. Many classes have already begun the communication process through their Class Contacts. This system of communication allows the class teacher to directly pass information and reminders to you at home, however you must choose to join this list. Your child’s class teacher will not pass on your email details to the Class Contact unless you deliberately ask to be added to the list. Please send an email to the school address ([email protected]) clearly asking to be added to the Class Contacts list for the specific class and this will be passed on to your class teacher. Remember that the Class Contact list is an email communication method, not a chat group or social media hub of any sort. No details, including those of the Class Contact themselves, will be publically shared or posted, so please use the school email as the avenue for joining up. Free webinar – Balancing Extra-Curricular Activities On Tuesday evening 2nd April from 8-9pm there is a webinar that Ironbark Ridge parents can access for free using the voucher code ‘BALANCING’, as explained in the short article to follow about Extra-Curricular Activities… probably worth thinking about given how extremely busy we keep our children these days! School Star We’ve had a great response to our new app trial – School Star, with almost 550 current users logged in and active. This gives our school an excellent way of contacting you all in the case of emergency, as well as providing a great medium to share news and celebrations about learning in a secure, non-public virtual space. If you have any trouble logging in please contact our Admin Office and I’ll lend a hand Yours in learning partnership, Nick Thomson Principal

DEPUTY PRINCIPALS’ REPORT

Australia-Chinese Research Institute – The Teaching of Chinese Language in Australian Schools. On Monday night our lead Chinese Language teacher, Ms Przyrembel, assisted the Rouse Hill High School Chinese teacher, Ms Wang, in presenting to the Australia-Chinese Research Institute (ACRI) at the University of Technology, Sydney. Ms Przyrembel presented on the collegial nature of our work with the Rouse Hill Learning Community and the impact this has had on students’ success in language studies into high school and beyond. More information about the discussion can be found on ACRI’s website: https://www.australiachinarelations.org/content/aiming-high-chinese-language-capacity-australian-schools We are proud to have teachers participating in rich and meaningful discussions about the future directions of language teaching in Australia. Congratulations Ms P! Student Attendance We would like to remind parents that the safety of our students remains our highest priority and that children are not permitted to arrive prior to 8.30am and/or remain at school at the end of the school day unless they are attending KTOOSH.

Page 4: Newsletter 2018 - ironbarkrg-p.schools.nsw.gov.au€¦ · This system of communication allows ... April from 8-9pm there is a webinar that Ironbark Ridge parents can access for free

Please be reminded that formal school supervision begins at 8.30am each morning and continues during play breaks throughout the day. At 3.00pm the students are dismissed under the direct supervision of the staff. Students are expected to leave the school grounds promptly and where possible, be under the supervision of a responsible adult or older sibling. Executive staff supervise the main gate each afternoon. The school understands that many parents have commitments at work which require them to leave before 8.30am and or arrive to pick up their children after 3pm. Unfortunately, there is no staff supervision for students prior to the 8.30am morning bell or after 3.00pm. However, there is available within the school, a Before and After School Care service, KTOOSH which operates, depending on vacancies each school day. Alternatively, you may be able to make arrangements with friends or neighbours for the supervision of your children. Drop Off and Pick Up We are now almost 8 weeks into the new school year, and children have well and truly settled into their new classes and routines. We have noticed a large number of parents remaining at school well past drop off time. As mentioned above, teachers provide supervision in the playground from 8.30am, however we have found the supervision of children difficult with the number of parents remaining on site. Children generally settle very quickly once parents have left, so your assistance in making this transition as smooth as possible for our students is very much appreciated. Perhaps now is the time to practice using the ‘Kiss and Drop’ zone out the front of the school!

Swimming Congratulations to our Ridges Zone Swimming team for their representation at the Sydney West Regional Swimming Carnival at Homebush on Tuesday. We had some sensational results, with Chand, Oliver, Susie and the Junior Girls Relay team (Maisie, Zoe, Eloise and Susie) all progressing through to the NSW PSSA State Carnival, which will be held on the last two days of this term. Congratulations to Susie who was named the Junior Girl Champion for Sydney West, with at least two records broken on the day, including the record for the Junior Girls Relay team. We are certainly proud of our excellent swimmers!

Gymnastics and Athletics In term 2, K-2 students will be participating in Be Skilled Be Fit Gymnastics lessons. 3-6 students will participate in weekly Athletics lessons in preparation for our Athletics Carnival. 3-6 students will also have Gymnastics lessons in Term 3. These lessons are run by highly skilled and trained teachers from Be Skilled Be Fit and will be invoiced to parents in Term 2. ICAS Ironbark Ridge PS will not be hosting ICAS assessments in 2019. These assessments are traditionally completed outside of class hours for a relatively small number of students. As a school, we do not value nor use the data obtained from these assessments to inform our teaching and learning. The assessments also impose an administrative strain on our office and teaching staff, with no remuneration from the UNSW nor value to our school learning programs. This year, the University of New South Wales has changed its ICAS assessments to an online only format. We are unable to support these tests with the technology they require. Should you wish your child to complete the ICAS assessments, visit the ICAS website on https://www.unswglobal.unsw.edu.au/educational-assessments/products/icas-assessments/ to enquire about the nearest testing centre. Kindergarten Capers

We are just over half way through the first term of Kindergarten and it is a joy to watch our students grow both socially and academically. They are really settling into the routines of school and now know what to expect in the classroom and the playground environment. Students have learnt many sounds (that they are blending to make words), sight words and reading strategies to begin to read and write. Reading and writing groups are a daily part of our teaching and learning programs. Students are encouraged to read their home readers and practise their sight words at home and they have the opportunity to change their books once a week. Home reading folders can be brought back to school on a Thursday and will be returned home on a Friday with new books. Kindergarten are now attending the Wednesday afternoon assemblies. Due to our school numbers, we are divided into 2 groups - even weeks, Kindy Noosa and Kindy Dandenong and odd weeks, Kindy Gundagai, Kindy Kirribilli, Kindy Woombye and Kindy Aranda. We will be letting parents know with plenty of notice when it is our turn to host – this will be later in the year. Most classes have had the opportunity to meet their ‘Buddy class’. Each Kindergarten student has a buddy or two from a Year 3 or 4 class. We meet for ‘Buddies’ regularly and at this point the students are getting to know each other by engaging in discussions, completing activities and playing games. The Kindergarten students enjoy having an older peer that provides support and a familiar face in the playground. Kindergarten parents, we would like to ensure we are creating meaningful community partnerships and would appreciate your feedback by using the following link to the survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/PJGWRJR Our aim as a Kindergarten team is to offer you support with how best to help your child at home with reading, writing and mathematics. Parents who do not have a child in Kindergarten in 2019, please do not complete this survey. We have a busy few weeks ahead as we get nearer to the school holidays and Easter. Please ensure your child goes to bed at a reasonable time as Kindergarten can be exhausting for some students (and teachers). ES1 Teachers Some photos with our Stage 2 buddies.

Stage 1 Snippets We have officially passed the half-way mark of Term 1! Time really does fly when you’re having fun! It has been another successful fortnight and Stage 1 classrooms are buzzing with highly engaged little learners. Students have immersed themselves into our English and Science & Technology programs, with our Stage 1 astronomers currently learning about the stars. Students are enjoying themselves and so are the teachers! Did you know our Sun is a star? A big congratulations to both 2C (week 6) and 1Y (week 7) who with their Stage 3 buddies took on the challenge to be the first classes to run an assembly for 2019. They presented entertaining items and showed enthusiasm throughout the assembly. On Monday students in Year 2, who have turned or are turning 8 years old this year, will be attending the Cross Country Carnival. Buses will depart school at 9:15am and arrive back at school around 2:30pm. Students are to wear their sport uniform or house colours together with their school hat, sunscreen and suitable running footwear. Please make sure students bring their recess and lunch as there is no canteen at the venue. Next Thursday is Harmony Day. Students are encouraged to wear orange or traditional clothing to celebrate the day. We are looking forward to another exciting and fun fortnight in Stage 1.

Stage 2 Dance Group Students will be informed shortly of a day and time for their audition. A message will be sent out on the school app as well with the correct day and time. Stage 3 Snippets

What a great fortnight of learning in Stage 3! Students and teachers have been working hard in their classes to reach personal goals and growth. Students have been engaging in focused and targeted reading lessons this term, aimed at improving comprehension over a large range of text types and genres. Discussing the main message or ideas of a book, TV show, documentary or article with your child may be a great way to get

involved in helping them gain a deeper understanding and access to the information and forms of communication that surround them every day. Monday is the Cross Country Carnival. Stage 3 always bring a great attitude to the event and we encourage all students to demonstrate a growth mindset by having a go and participating. We are looking forward to witnessing the persistence shown by our students and the personal success they achieve as a result. It’s sure to be a great day!

History Projects have been handed out and students are eager to begin researching their significant individual or event, identifying and discussing the contribution made to Australian society and the impact it had on the development of the country. While students will be give some time in class to begin the task, the majority is to be completed at home. We encourage

students to think creatively about how they will present and show their understanding e.g. using costume, technology, poetry, a model, etc. We are looking forward to seeing the final products in Term 2. We would like to wish all the best to those students who are sitting the selective high school exam. These students have put in a lot of hard work in preparation and we a very proud of their efforts. Camp is approaching fast, with final payment due on Friday 15th of March. More information regarding the organisation of this highly anticipated excursion will be communicated shortly.

Stage 3 Teachers CHINESE Week 7

Nǐmen hǎo! 你们 好! In Chinese this fortnight students have been engaged in their learning of Chinese New Year. Kindy students have been learning about the Year of the Pig and they have created a paper plate pig. Year 1 students have been learning about the meaning behind a few Chinese New Year symbols

and practices. Year 2 students are continuing to practice the ‘gōng xī’ song. Year 3 students are learning about the significance of lanterns and how they light the way into their bright future. Year 4 students have completed their agamographs and comparisons of New Years and Chinese New Year. Stage 3 have now formed groups and are working together to perform a hóng bāo gē poem in front of their peers. Below are photos of some students from KA, 3C and 1Y with their Year of the Pig craft. CANTEEN

Could parents please try to place their flexischool orders prior to 8.30am, or even the night before, as we are finding that since Flexischools have changed their website, it seems to “crash” when a

lot of orders are trying to be processed between 8.30am and 9.00am, especially on a Friday. We apologise if this causes any problems, as our busy time in the morning is between 8.30 and 9.30, and we are unable to take phone calls during this time. If you have missed the cut off time or unable to place an order, the canteen can provide your child with a vegemite, cheese or jam sandwich.

These are our new Ridgey Yoghurt Cups. They are made up with a weetbix base, yoghurt and seasonal fruit. They are $1.00 each and available at breakfast and recess and can be ordered through Flexischools under the 'Salad' section.
