Marimbaband The marimba band was founded in 2008 by “Gogo” Joyce and the first teacher was Fr. Larry. The main goal is to keep the boys at Enjabulweni residential care home busy in their free time. As a result it was decided that the boys should be taught a new skill in music which would be useful. Playing marimba gives the residents the opportunity to have fun and take their mind off their daily life. Mr. Thembela is the schools’ music teacher and a former MYC resident who used to live at Enjabulweni back in the old days. Thembela started playing music at a young age. When he was a student at the Salesian Highschool, Fr. Larry noticed his musical gift and offered him a job as the new music teacher at Enjabulweni and marimba coordinator. In 2010, Thembela took over the lead positopn from Mduduzi, the former marimba teacher. Presently the marimba band consists of two groups, an older group and a younger group, which alternatively perform in events throughout the country. Members of the older group are; Abraham, Bongane, Ciniso, Ntsetselelo, Sebenele, Majahonke and Lwazi. The younger group consists of; Sipho, Thulane, Vukani and Bheki.
When the current members leave MYC or change homes, they leave the marimba band and new members get the chance to join. Thembela asks younger boys to join the practice to find out whether they are talented and interested to keep on playing. because their house is next to the marimba class, which

The marimba band practices twice a week in the music music room. There are 5 marimbas available to play along with a djembe and a shaker. During the practice, old songs are repeated in addition to the teaching of new songs. Some of the well-‐known songs in their repertoire include “We Wish you a merry Christmas”, “In the jungle” as well as many more. Besides practicing, there is allot enjoyment to be had from watching them performing in various places throughout the country. In this way the boys get to visit the most beautiful places in their own country, and learn about their ancestors, culture, and to meet a lot of new people; the most important thing is that they have fun! Anyone can book the marimba band, in the past they have performed at weddings, beach clubs, House on Fire, they even went international in South-‐Africa! Previous highlights were the Bushfire festival, a big festival in Swaziland, where they played three times along with an international marimba workshop in Bela Bela (South-‐Africa)..
Marimba Band performing in one of their shows. The future goal for Thembela is to combine the marimbas with other instruments like the piano and guitars. He is already teaching some boys how to play the guitar and the piano during music class for this ongoing project. We wish Thembela and the boys of the marimba band all the best in their future projects! School & education news

CANGO A Coordinating Assembly in partnership with UNDP invited the MYC to a four day Residential training scheduled from 09th to the 12th November 2015 at Esibayeni Lodge, Matsapha. This was an effort to build the capacity of Civil Society in anti-‐corruption issues and transparency. Winile Nzima attended this workshop. The workshop focused on issues of Social Accountability & Transparency and was led by a Consultant from Ghana, Rasheed Draman. The workshop further focused on developing a community score card to measure the effectiveness of Government programmes at community level. The score card will also assist NGOs to measure the effectiveness of their programmes at community level especially on issues of transparency and accountability. MYC Clinic The clinic continues to operate and provide service,s to about 300 patients per month, with about 200 coming in for HIV counselling and testing. A huge number of the patients are coming from the surrounding community. The Health Coordinator Mr. Lovemore facilitated a Sexual Reproductive Health Workshop organized by Volunteer Service Over-‐seas. Five residential house parents attended this workshop together with three Enjabulweni teachers. The purpose of this workshop was to educate and empower the house parents and teachers to be supervisors for the Peer Educators who were recently trained in the same programme. Such a platform will empower our youth to debate issues with their peers regarding Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights.
