Ngwane Park residence provides care and support for 14 girls ranging in ages from 8 to 21 years . The home is well looked after by the housemother Make Mavimbela and by Mary Kate (Hoseas Heart)who’s primary role is to cater for the welfare of the residents. MYC in partnership with Hosea’s Heart reopened this home for marginalized girls at risk in Manziniin in 2013. The home consists of 5 bedrooms, an extra room for emergency cases, a kitchen, dining room, living room, bathroom and toilet.All the residents are currently attending school and their tuition fees are being paid by MYC. Larry. The main goal is to keep the boys at Enjabulweni residential care home busy in their free time. As a result it was decided that the boys should be taught a new skill in music which would be useful. Playing marimba gives the residents the opportunity to have fun and take their mind off their daily life. Mr. Thembela is the schools’ music teacher and a former MYC resident who used to live at Enjabulweni back in the old days. Thembela started playing music at a young age. When he was a student at the Salesian Highschool, Fr. Larry noticed his musical gift and offered him a job as the new music teacher at Enjabulweni and marimba coordinator. In 2010, Thembela took over the lead positopn from Mduduzi, the former marimba teacher. Presently the marimba band consists of two groups, an older group and a younger group, which alternatively perform in events throughout the country. Members of the older group are; Abraham, Bongane, Ciniso, Ntsetselelo, Sebenele, Majahonke and Lwazi. The younger group consists of; Sipho, Thulane, Vukani and Bheki. When the current members leave MYC or change homes, they leave the marimba band and new members get the chance to join. Thembela asks younger boys to join the practice to find out whether they are talented and interested to keep on playing. because their house is next to the marimba class, which Ngwane Park Residential Care Home

The  marimba  band  practices  twice  a  week  in  the  music  music   room.   There   are   5   marimbas   available   to   play    along  with  a  djembe  and  a  shaker.  During  the  practice,  old   songs   are   repeated   in   addition   to   the   teaching   of  new   songs.   Some   of   the   well-­‐known   songs   in   their  repertoire   include   “We  Wish   you   a   merry   Christmas”,  “In  the  jungle”  as  well  as  many  more.  Besides   practicing,   there   is   allot   enjoyment   to   be   had  from   watching   them   performing   in   various   places  throughout  the  country.  In  this  way  the  boys  get  to  visit  the   most   beautiful   places   in   their   own   country,   and  learn  about  their  ancestors,  culture,  and  to  meet  a  lot  of  new   people;   the     most   important   thing   is   that   they    have   fun!   Anyone   can   book   the  marimba   band,   in   the  past   they   have   performed   at   weddings,   beach   clubs,  House   on   Fire,   they   even  went   international   in   South-­‐Africa!  Previous  highlights  were   the  Bushfire   festival,   a  big  festival  in  Swaziland,  where  they  played  three  times  along  with   an   international  marimba  workshop   in  Bela  Bela   (South-­‐Africa)..

 Marimba  Band  performing  in  one  of  their  shows.    The   future   goal   for   Thembela   is   to   combine   the  marimbas   with   other   instruments   like   the   piano   and  guitars.   He   is   already   teaching   some  boys   how   to   play  the   guitar   and   the   piano   during   music   class   for   this  ongoing  project.  We  wish  Thembela  and  the  boys  of  the  marimba  band  all  the  best  in  their  future  projects!        School  &  education  news  

 First  Aid  workshop  for  future  pre-­‐school  teachers  and  

volunteers  

On  the  6th  of  November  the  future  pre-­‐school  teachers,  volunteers  and  house  fathers  attended  a  first  aid  course  facilitated  by  Mr.  Lovemore,  MYC’s  Health  Coordinator  and  two  paramedics  of  the  Emergency  Medical  Service  

Department  (EMS),  Ms.  Hlophe  Nqobile  and  Mr.  Dlamini.  During  this  workshop  they  learned  how  to  handle  and  treat  certain  injuries  and  wounds.  The  trainees  learned  so  many  first  aid  techniques  and  methods  such  as  how  to  treat  burns,  snakebites,  fainting  and  choking.  To  finish  the  workshop  the  

trainees  were  taught  how  to  do  CPR.  The  workshop  came  at  a  right  time  as  Christmas  holidays  are  near      and  most  of  our  youth  will  be  attending      games  and  

sporting  activities.    

   

  Pre-­‐  Schoo  lGraduations  On   the   14th   of   November,   the   Eticancweni   care   point  pre-­‐school   and   Enjabulweni   held   their   annual  graduations   as   the   young   graduates   left   to   begin   their  primary   school   education.   The   ceremony   started   with  teacher   Dlamini   welcoming   the   parents,   family  members   and   special   guests   before   the   children  presented  all    they  had  learned  over  the  past  year  in  the  forms   of   songs   and   rhymes.     Their   knowledge   of  colours,  the  alphabet,  numbers  and  skills  in  writing  was  showcased   to   those   present.   They   also   performed  traditional  dances  in  groups  and  sang  for  the  audience  i,  before   being   presented   with   their   certificates   by  MYC

End  of  exams  In   November,   10   boys   of   Enjabulweni   residential   care  home   finished   their   grade   7   primary   external   exams  along  with  7  MYC  boys  who  also  finished  their  final  high  school   exams.     Their   exam   results  will   be   published   in  January.  We  sincerely  hope  that  their  hard  work  will  be  rewarded  and  that  they  will  advance  up  their  academic  ladder   next   year.   Congratulations   in   advance   to   the  students   from   form   five   and   the   students   from   grade  seven.      Visitors  &  Volunteer  News  

 Six  Visitors  arrived  on  the  27th  June  2015,  Ann  

Laydon,  Gillian  Emery,  Janet  Smith,  Grace  Sidney,  Karen  Tait  and  Chris  O’Neill.  

The   visitors   were   from   St   Anthony’s   School   and   the  University  of  Sunderland.  During  their  visit  they  saw  the  need   to   have   a   youth  mentor   at   Enjabulweni   Bridging  School.  As  a   result   they  created  a  new  post  of  a  Youth  

Mentor  and  funded  it.  Tony  Nzima  was  appointed  to  fill    this   vacancy.     His   duties   among   others   include   raising    support   primary   boys   studying   towards   their   external  examinations.     Childhood   Study   students   at   the  University   of   Sunderland   have   contributed   funds   to  purchase   a   range   of   equipment   and   resources   for   the  pre-­‐school.   They   also   donated   games   to   the   youth   in  MYC.     All   the   children   in   our   residential   care   homes  were   given   toothbrushes,   pens,   pencils,   sharpeners,  rubbers   and   clothing   and   uniforms.     They   also   funded  the   purchase   of  mattresses   for   one   of   the   girls’   home  (Zakhele)  and  decorated  the  kitchen  of  the  home.       Sylvia  Chromm  and  Holger  Braun  On   the   04th   August   2015,   Sylvia   Chrome   and   Holger  Braun   arrived;   they   are     representatives   of   Don   Bosco  Mondo.     They   came   to   assess   the   project   which   is  funded   by   the   German  Ministry   in   Bonn   through   Don  Bosco   Mondo.   While   here   they   visited   Enjabulweni  Primary   School.   Ms.   Sylvia,   Mr.   Holger,   Mr.   Shabangu  and   Fr.   Larry   McDonnell   planted   three   trees   to  symbolize   the  mutual   relationship   between  Don  Bosco  Mondo   and   MYC.

The  Hendrickson  Family  Kyle   Hendrickson   also   recently   visited   us   for   a   few  weeks.    He  is  the  son  of  Edward  Hendrickson,  a  Doctor  of   Environmental   Health   in   Family   Medicine   at   Salud  Family  Health  Centre.    During  his  time  here  he  was  able  to  help  our  Health  Coordinator,  Mr  Lovemore  Garira   in  data  capturing.  Last  month  we  were  also  graced  by  the  presence  of  Dr.   Edward  Hendrickson  and  his  wife  Mrs.  Leslie   Hendrickson.   They   visited   the   clinic   which   they  help  by  fundraising  at  the  Annual  Telluride  AIDS  Benefit  function.

Joyce  and  Luke  Gallie  In  November  we  were  also  graced  by  a  visit  from  Joyce  and  her  son  Luke  and  other  family  members  .  They  stayed  two  weeks  in  Swaziland.  During  their  stay,  they  visited  all  MYC  projects.  They  recorded  a  new    song    with  the  Marimba  Band    which  will  be  launched  soon  in  the  UK.  MYC    residents  were  so  happy  to  see  them  once  again  as  well  as  the  administrative  staff  members.  They  also  revised  the  Litsemba  Lisekhona  Project  which  will  be  launched    next  year  January  2016.      

Volunteers  at  house  on  Fire  Our   volunteers   during   their   last   month   decided   to  participate   in   the   Halloween   Masked   Ball   which   was  organized   by   House   On   Fire.  

 MYC  Volunteers  at  the  Charity  Ball  in  House  on  Fire.  Also,   the   youth   enjoyed   hiking   and   camping   at  McCorkindales   for   the   weekend.   The   volunteers  together  with  the  house  fathers  and  mothers  facilitated  the   camping.  We  would  also   like   to   thank   the  Director  for   sponsoring   the   two   weekends.   On   the   7th   of  

December   the   volunteers   also   conducted   a   youth  summer   sports   day   where   all   the   youth   enjoyed  different  sporting  activities  at  the  Bosco  Sports  Hall.

 MYC  volunteers  group  photo  2015/2016      MYC  staff  news    Two   of   our   staff   members   recently   sat   for   their  examination   at   the   Institute   of   Commercial  Management   (ICM).   Ms.   Thentjiwe   Dube   and   Ms.  Nomcebo   Sibandze   who   are   employed   by   MYC   as  Project  Officer   and  Genaral  Manager   of   education   and  training   respectively.   They   are   currentlyawaiting   their  results   inAccounting   and   Finance   after  which   they  will  then   receive   their   diplomas.   The   duration   of   their  courses   was   six   months.   We   are   grateful   to   Victoria  Christie   for   funding   their   training   under   the   capacity  building   initiative.  We  hope   that   they  will  both   receive  Volunteers at House On Fire

CANGO  A   Coordinating   Assembly   in   partnership   with   UNDP  invited   the   MYC   to   a   four   day   Residential   training  scheduled   from   09th   to   the   12th   November   2015   at  Esibayeni    Lodge,  Matsapha.    This  was  an  effort  to    build  the  capacity  of  Civil  Society  in  anti-­‐corruption  issues  and  transparency.   Winile   Nzima   attended   this   workshop.    The  workshop  focused  on  issues  of  Social  Accountability  &   Transparency   and   was   led   by   a   Consultant   from  Ghana,  Rasheed  Draman.  The  workshop  further  focused  on  developing  a  community  score  card  to  measure  the  effectiveness   of   Government   programmes   at  community  level.  The  score  card  will  also  assist  NGOs  to  measure   the   effectiveness   of   their   programmes   at  community   level   especially   on   issues   of   transparency  and  accountability.    MYC  Clinic  The  clinic  continues  to  operate  and  provide  service,s  to  about  300  patients  per  month,  with  about  200  coming  in  for  HIV  counselling  and  testing.  A  huge  number  of  the  patients   are   coming   from   the   surrounding   community.  The   Health   Coordinator   Mr.   Lovemore   facilitated   a  Sexual   Reproductive   Health   Workshop   organized   by  Volunteer   Service   Over-­‐seas.   Five   residential   house  parents   attended   this   workshop   together   with   three  Enjabulweni   teachers.   The   purpose   of   this   workshop  was   to   educate   and   empower   the   house   parents   and  teachers   to  be   supervisors   for   the  Peer  Educators  who  were  recently   trained     in   the  same  programme.  Such  a  platform  will  empower  our  youth  to  debate  issues  with  their   peers   regarding   Sexual   Reproductive   Health   and  Rights.

We   thank   the   volunteers,   Kayla   Zegers,   Melanie  Huisman,   Villie   Lappaleinenand  Merja   Huuhka,   for   the  clothes  they  donated  to  the  kids.  The  children  loved  the  new   clothes   and   did   a   small   catwalk   show   to   present  their  new  belongings.

   Bosco  Youth  Agricultural  Centre(BYAC)  News  With  the  BYAC  Training  Centre  opening  in  January  2016,  the   recruitment   of   participants   is   close   to   completion.  We  noticed   a   high   interest   from   young   people.  Out   of  the  80  application  forms  distributed,  87.5%  of  the  forms  have  been  returned  and  screening  of  these  applicants  is  underway.   The   next   phase   of   the   project   is   the  construction   of   the   external   houses   for   more  participants  and  staff.  This  will   increase  the  capacity  of  BYAC.   A   special   thanks   goes   to   Misean   Cara   and  Victories  Christi  for  supporting  this  phase  of  the  project.
