  • This article is part of a community-wide celebration in honour of the building of the National Historic Site Gur Sikh Temple (est. 1911). Each week for the month of November, we will remember and write about four Indo-Canadian heroes whose legacy will continue to inspire our future generations. The following article is the third one in the series.

Lt Col Harjit Singh Sajjan- Standing Tall in the Sikh Community

Turban is not a liability, it is a responsibility

It was Lt Col Sajj-ans day off when I in te rv iewed him. Even though he was dressed in his civil clothes, I could feel these strong vibra-tions in the room that would only come in the company of someone as special and important as Col Sajjan. Lt Col Sajjan recently made history and the Sikh community around the world proud by becoming the first turbaned Sikh to take command of the British Columbia Regiment. The year 2011 is an im-portant year because we are celebrating our 100 years in this country and Col Sajjan could only be another milestone in these celebrations reminding us about our sacrifices and how far

we have come in these years.

Born in Punjab district Hoshiarpur, Col Sajjans village is just 15 minutes away from the village of Private Buckam Singh who died in 1919 while serving the Canadian Army in the First World War. Col Sajjan was five years old when he came to Canada. He grew up in Vancouver during the times when young Indo Canadians were being inspired by the whole gang persona. Even though having a different identity such as keeping a turban would have made one more vulnerable for racism, Col Sajjan thought that it was also something that would save him from falling in trap of the gangs. The fact that a young teenager would

even think of applying true principles of Sikhi in his life and follow the values that our Gurus had taught us speaks volumes about Col Saj-jans commitment and dedication. It was also during those times that parents were so busy and were content the their kids were at least going to school rather than getting attracted towards gangs and drugs that Col Sajjan decided that he would go into the Air Force. Therefore, he joined the reserve unit in BC to go in Air force and had no inten-tion of staying in army. It was during this time that Col Sajjan started facing challenges due to his turban. Little had he realized as a teen-ager that the Canadian military would ever af-fix such labels on him and the military shocked him in terms on racism that existed within it. This wasnt easy and it soon deflated young Sajjans confidence. He called his father and told him that he wanted to quit. His father replied Son you can quit but do realize this, that any other Sikh that comes there after you will be labelled as a failure be-fore they even joined. This statement was life changing for this young boy. Therefore, his stub-bornness kicked in and

    Friday, November 18th, 2011PAGE 6Punjabi Patrika

    PAGE 6

  • in order to prove all the stereotypes wrong he decided that he would stay, work hard and prove them wrong. Col Sajjan certainly proved them wrong and he did so well in his training that he was asked to not leave the army to join the Air Force. Rest is history.

In Col Sajjans words, I see Sikhi differently, you are not a part of it, it actually becomes a part of you. Sikhi is how you live and what you choose to do. Wearing a turban was a commit-ment that I had to make to stay on the right path and not get astray. Col Sajjan gave me an ex-ample of Guru Nanaks principles and his trav-els around the world to spread the message of god. He said that Guru Nanak message to the world was open and clear when he talked about the importance of dedication in ones life. People around the world still remember and re-spect Guru Nanak for his philosophy. This was proven by the fact that on Col Sajjans deploy-ment to Afghanistan, the locals came to him and told him that they know Baba Nanak and Col Sajjan got a lot of re-spect because they knew

that Sikhs are warriors and instead of calling him by his rank or last name they called him Sahib or Singh to give him the honour. The locals would also come to him and say You are a Sikh, so you must help us. This statement speaks volumes about how people perceive the Sikhs.

Soon the military re-alized that what they termed as diversity was now actually an operational necessity. The fact that Col Sajjan had made such good relations in Afghanistan, made him go to a second deployment. He was also requested to serve as the Special Assis-tant to US Army Major-General James Terry, Commanding General of 10th Mountain Divi-sion and Commander of Regional Command South. Col Sajjan said that when you are in war, it does not matter who you look like or what your religion is. What matters is how much work can you do and how committed you are. According to him Diversity is more than just political correct-ness

Col Sajjan said that it was not easy to keep a turban, not only because

of the racism he faced but also in war zone it is hard to maintain the turban. However, a true Sikh is the one who if he once makes a com-mitment never looks back. Commitment is something that in fact gives you confidence and it was this confi-dence that helped Col Sajjan achieve success and make history. Col Sajjan said that Guru Gobind Singh was a visionary because when he gave Sikhs a differ-ent identity, he knew that it would be some-thing that would be hard to maintain. However, those that will succeed in this would be the ones that can be relied on and those would also be the ones that would go to any height for the cause of humanity. Col Sajjans story should be told in every house-hold especially to the youth because during these times when any little thing can make us deviate from our path, it is only commitment and dedication that can save us.

  • Province strengthens Agricultural Land Commission

Farmers and ranchers on Agricultural Reserve Land will have more tools to protect their way of life as a result of proposed legislation, increased fund-ing and other measures to improve the operations of the Agricultural Land Commis-sion (ALC), Minister of Agri-culture Don McRae and ALC chair Richard Bullock said.By improving the structure and sustainability of the ALC, were improving the lives of 20,000 farming families in British Columbia and the $9.6-billion agri-food sector our province supports, said McRae. The changes and support the Province is pro-viding the ALC is a commit-ment to ensure the ALC will be a proactive organization dedicated to preserving farms, and expanding opportunities for producers. These initiatives will en-hance the commissions abil-ity to preserve B.C.s agri-cultural land and encourage farming, said Bullock.A stronger ALC means stron-ger operations for current

and future B.C. farmers and ranchers, and a stronger ag-ricultural industry for the tens of thousands of British Columbians working in it, said Reg Ens, executive direc-tor of the British Columbia Agriculture Council. We are encouraged to see the B.C. government taking steps that should help strengthen farm-ing, and moving forward we anticipate working with the Province to implement the changes.Improvements to the ALC will be made in several areas: Preserving farmland by plac-ing a five-year moratorium on repeat applications for items such as excluding land from the ALR. Sustainable operations through additional funding and provisions for increased revenue generation by the ALC. Increased enforcement ca-pacity through shared re-sources. Strategic governance provi-sions give the chair additional oversight over regional panels

and more time to focus on commission matters by hiring a CEO to look after adminis-trative issues. Upgraded online applica-tion tracking system to pro-vide enhanced web services to clients. Encouraging farming by working more proactively with local governments rather than simply reacting to ap-plications. A new ministers bylaw standard regarding residential uses in the ALR. The comprehensive reform package responds to recom-mendations contained in two independent reviews of the ALC. One was prepared by the auditor general of British Columbia and the other by commissions chair. The chairs report is available at: http://www.gov.bc.ca/agri/alcreview.htmlThe proposed legislation is post-ed as part of Bill 19 at: http://www.leg.bc.ca/39th4th/1st_read/index.htm

b.. Have an emergency kit on hand with flash-lights; a battery-operated radio; extra batteries; corded-telephone; warm clothing and blankets; a first aid kit; non-perish-able, ready-to-eat foods; games, cards and books to keep everyone busy; and a copy of your emer-gency preparedness plan (be sure everyone knows what to expect and what to do in an emergency)

c.. Check BC Hydros mobile friendly website to find out about power outages and estimated restoration time.

During an outage, you can help with power restoration:

a.. Turn off all appliances and electronics, especial-ly electric heaters during an outage. When power is restored, power will rush to all items left in the on position which can cause the system to overload and possibly cause a second outage.

b.. Turn off all lights ex-cept one inside the home and one outside. The in-side light lets you know when the power is back on and the outside light lets BC Hydro crews know.

Public and employee safety is the top priority for BC Hydro. Crews work as safely and quick-ly as possible under diffi-cult conditions to restore power. Be safe!

Never go near or touch a fallen

power line. If you see a fallen power

line, report the exact location to

    1-888-POWERON or *HYDRO on

your mobile phone. For more information,

    visit www.bchydro.com/outages

Be prepared! Storm season is here.

  • PRIME MINISTER STEPHEN HARPER ANNOUNCES THE APPOINTMENT OF THE NEXT COMMISSIONER OF THE RCMP

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced the appointment of Robert W. Paulson as the new Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, effective November 21, 2011. Mr. Paulson succeeds Com-

missioner William J.S. Elliott, who has been appointed as Special Representative of INTERPOL to the United Nations.

Mr. Paulson has had a distinguished 25-year career with the RCMP, joining in 1986 as a Constable. He has held progressively senior positions within the Force, most recently as Deputy Commissioner, Federal Policing. Prior to being appointed as Deputy Commis-sioner, Mr. Paulson served as Assistant Commissioner, Contract and Aboriginal Policing Services and Assistant Com-missioner, National Security Criminal Investigations.

Mr. Paulson was chosen following a rigorous and open selection process. As a senior police leader with broad experience across the RCMPs complex mandate, he brings with him a deep un-derstanding of the challenges facing the Force, said the Prime Minister. Mr. Paulson will provide the leadership nec-essary to strengthen our national police force now and into the future.

The Prime Minister took this opportunity to thank Commissioner Elliott for his dedication and significant contributions over many years of service to the RCMP and the people of Canada. The Prime Minister wished him the very best in his future endeavours.

Manufacturing sales jumped 2.6% in Septem-ber following an unrevised 1.4% gain in August and a 3.3% jump (previously was 3.0%) in July. The rise in September was stronger than market expectations for an already solid 2.0% increase. Eliminating the impact of prices, the volume of manufacturing sales rose 1.8%, building on

1.1% and 3.2% (previously was 3.1%) gains in August and July, respectively. Implications The rise in manufacturing sales in September was largely accounted for by higher sales of petroleum and coal products along with rising

Canadian manufacturing sales jump in September. transportation sales. Sales of petroleum and coal products surged 13.7% in September, building further on 5.3% and 7.0% gains in August and July, respectively. Statistics Canada noted that part of the advance reflected higher volumes reported by some petroleum refineries following temporary maintenance shutdowns that weighed on the sector, particularly in the second quarter. Transportation sales rose 7.1%, reflecting a second consecutive solid gain in aerospace sales of 17.0% following a 19.6% (was 47.8%) increase in August as well as a 6.2% rise in auto sales. Providing notable offset, food sales dropped 3.0% and sales in the miscellaneous industry fell 13.3%, re-flecting a decline in jewellery and silverware manufacturing. On a regional basis, stronger sales were re-ported in nine provinces in September, with the largest increases posted in Alberta (5.9%), Quebec (2.3%), New Brunswick (13.3%) and Ontario (1.0%). The rise in the volume of manufacturing sales in September following solid increases in July and August resulted in sales rising an annual-ized 15.2% in the third quarter as a whole, more than retracing the disappointing 10.3% drop in the second quarter. Manufacturing activity in the second quarter was weighed down by a number of temporary factors, particularly sup-

ply disruptions in the auto industry associated with the natural disasters in Japan in the spring and temporary maintenance at some petroleum refineries. The rebound in the third quarter as these temporary impediments to growth have eased remains consistent with our forecast that GDP growth bounced back in the third quar-ter following the disappointing 0.4% second quarter decline. Ongoing uncertainty about the potential fallout from the European debt crisis and the prospect for fiscal retrenchment in the US remain significant downside risks going forward; however todays report continues to suggest that that GDP growth rebounded in the third quarter, even suggesting some modest upside risk to our 2.8% forecast.Data Details a.. Manufacturing sales jumped 2.6% in September, above market expectations for a 2.0% gain ahead of the report. b.. Increases in petroleum and transportation sales were only partially offset by lower sales of food and miscellaneous products. c.. Sales on a volumes basis rose 1.8% fol-lowing an unrevised 1.1% gain in August and a 3.2% (was 3.1%) increase in July. RBC contacts:Nathan Janzen, Economist, (416) 974-0579

  • ICBC Cases

After my accident I had constant neck and back pains. I felt sad most of the time and became very anxious about the future. ICBC said I was overreacting and offered $17,000. My case settled for $400,000 at mediation. MR. S.

The damage to my car was only $700. ICBC said I could not have been injured; but I was. My lawyer finalized my claim for $28,000 plus expenses. MISS M.

ICBC offered me $32,000 to finish my case. I was off work for 6 months and saw a specialist because of my jaw injury. I couldnt mop the floor or clean our bathroom without help from my children. I received $200,000 through my lawyers efforts. MRS. S.

The damage to my vehicle was about $1,700. ICBC said this was a Low Velocity Impact (LVI) and refused to pay me for my injuries and physio costs. My lawyer obtained more than $45,000 for me. MRS. B.

A car hit me as I walked across the street. ICBC blamed me because of the colour of my clothing. My lawyer worked hard and obtained necessary evidence. My case settled for over $300,000. MRS. C.

  • B.C. Expands India Trade Presence

Premier Christy Clark has an-n o u n c e d t h a t British Columbia will expand its trade and investment presence in India and is working with the federal government to co-locate in Mumbai and Chandigarh. The Premier made the announcement to an audience of business and government leaders in Mumbai, as part of the BC Jobs and Trade Mission.

Indias middle class is growing at an unprec-edented rate, and we want to ensure that B.C. has the best opportunity to market its products and services here, said Premier Clark. By increasing the number of trade representatives, we will be supporting our provinces companies and sectors to build the rela-tionships and access the information they need to

build their business. Its part of our BC Jobs Plan commitment to double our international presence, to create jobs at home.

The Province will have its official trade and in-vestment representatives located in the Consul-ate General of Canada in Mumbai and the Consul-ate General of Canada in Chandigarh offices in the spring of 2012.

The trade operations in Mumbai and Chandigarh will help businesses and organizations from Brit-ish Columbia connect to opportunities across India, promote the province as a destination for investment and tourism, as a location for international educa-tion, a source of informa-tion on natural resources and the provision of pro-fessional services.

The Province, through Canada Starts Here: The BC Jobs Plan, has pledged to double British Colum-bias international pres-ence in key and expanding markets.

Premier Clark made the announcement at a dinner of business and govern-ment leaders organized by the Asia Pacific Founda-tion of Canada and India Gateway House.

The Premier is leading the largest trade mission in the provinces history to promote B.C. as a safe harbour for investment. The BC Jobs and Trade Mission is focused on strengthening existing re-lationships between B.C. and Asian markets, open-ing doors for new relation-ships and setting the stage for future opportunities in China and India.

BC export growth continues up 32 per cent in September

British Colum-bias strong run of export growth contin-ued in Septem-ber with nearly $3.2 billion worth of goods sent to inter-national destinations during the month, an increase of 32 per cent compared with the value exported during September 2010. Septembers export num-bers have helped boost B.C.s 2011 year-to-date figures. Over the first three-quarters of the year, B.C.s exports have closed in on the $25-billion mark, up by 16 per cent compared with what was shipped between January and September 2010. The latest export numbers, released in this weeks Sta-tistics Canada International Merchandise Trade report, were particularly good news

to those involved in B.C.s natural resource sectors. Exports of energy products for the month surpassed the billion-dollar mark, forestry sales exceeded $810 mil-lion, while international shipments of industrial goods were worth more than $670 million. B.C.s exports to Asia were again strong in September. Japan led the way with $528 million worth of goods shipped to the country, a 66-per-cent gain compared with September 2010, with $184 million worth of cop-per ores and $199 million in coal spurring this growth. Year-to-date exports to Ja-pan are recorded at $3.6 billion, up by 18 per cent. Exports to China for the month were worth $520 million, up 48 per cent compared with September 2010. Year-to-date exports

hit $3.6 billion, up by 47 per cent compared with the first nine months of 2010. Softwood lumber exports were worth $107 million, bringing year-to-date sales to $853 million, a 107-per-cent increase compared with the same period in 2010. B.C. also recorded month-ly gains in sales to South Korea and India, but lost ground to Taiwan. Septembers exports to the United States were worth nearly $1.3 billion, a 24-per-cent gain compared Sep-tember 2010, and are up by three per cent for the year. Nationally, Canadian ex-ports for September were worth $31.1 billion, a 19-per-cent gain compared with September 2010. Year-to-date, Canadas exports total $308 billion, a 12-per-cent growth rate over the pace set in 2010.

Canada Working With the US to Address Emissions from Passenger Cars and Light Trucks

for Model Years 2017 and Beyond

The Honorable Peter Kent, Canadas Environment Minister, released a docu-ment on the development of proposed regulations to limit greenhouse gas (GHG) emis-sions from passenger cars and light trucks for model years 2017 and beyond. These regulations are an extension of the close work Canada has already com-pleted in alignment with the U.S. government to establish common North American standards for regulating GHGs from new pas-senger cars and light trucks for the 2011-16 model years.

Given that our economies are deeply integrated, alignment with the United States is a key part of Canadas overall ap-proach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, said Minister Kent. This effort will also lead to greater fuel economy for con-sumers, innovation in the auto sector and increased economic competitiveness for Canada.

This consultation document will seek early input from stakeholders on the main ele-ments of the proposed regula-tions. These comments will be taken into account during the development of the proposed regulations, which are expected to be available for a formal public comment period in 2012. The consultation document has been posted on the Canadian Environmental Protection Act Registry for a 30-day public comment period.

On Oct. 1, 2010 Canada re-leased the Passenger Automo-bile and Light Truck Green-house Gas Emission Regula-tions, which are aligned with the United States and establish progressively tighter emissions standards for cars and light trucks over the 2011-16 model years.

Canada also issued a notice of intent to continue working closely with the United States

towards the development of more stringent standards for new cars and light trucks for model years 2017 and beyond.

Strong action in the transporta-tion sector is a key component in the Governments plan to reduce total greenhouse gas emissions by 17 percent from 2005 levels by 2020. The trans-portation sector accounts for about 25 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in Canada, and so reducing emissions in this sector will do a lot to help us achieve our total emissions reduction goal.

In addition to passenger car and light truck regulations, the Government is also devel-oping regulations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from heavy-duty trucks and has mandated a requirement for an average of five percent renew-able content in gasoline, and two percent content for diesel and heating oil.

  • Angus Reid Poll Stave Lake is up to the Voters

The latest Angus Reid poll results have been received by the City, announced Mayor George W. Peary today.

From October 28 to No-vember 4, 2011, Angus Reid Public Opinion con-ducted a telephone survey among 300 randomly se-lected registered voters in the City of Abbotsford on the Stave Lake Water Project, said Peary. The results indicate that the majority of Abbotsford residents are engaged in this process.

    Highlights from the re-sults include:

Overall, would you say things in Abbotsford are going in the right direc-tion, or are things cur-rently on the wrong track? Three-in-five respondents

say things are going in the right direction.

As you may know, the City of Abbotsford has an immediate need for a new water source to meet sup-ply demands anticipated by 2016. How closely have you followed this situation? Twoin-four re-spondents have followed the situation closely, but one third (33%) have not.

More than half (of re-spondents) 57%, are con-cerned that Abbotsford will run out of water.

When initially asked about their voting prefer-ence on the Stave Lake Water Project respondents are separated by only five points, with 37 per cent saying that they are thinking of voting in favour, and 42 per cent saying they are thinking

of voting against. When informed about the $65.7 million in Federal funding and potential rate savings and asked the same ques-tion again:

The message of savings due to federal fundsas well as possible rate in-creases and restrictions without Stave Lakemoves the needle. On this question, 45 per cent would vote in favour of the project, while 43 per cent would vote against.

One thing is clear, said Peary The decision be-fore the residents of Ab-botsford in this Refer-endum is one that will impact this community for years to come. I en-courage everyone to make their voice heard on this issue by voting on No-vember 19th.

Government of Canada helps Canadians understand diabetes risksThe Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, launched the Canadian Diabetes Risk Questionnaire, known as CANRISK, to inform Cana-dians about their risks of de-veloping type 2 diabetes and to encourage them to make healthy lifestyle decisions to prevent it.Type 2 diabetes and its complications are a growing health concern. For many people however, the disease can be managed and even prevented through lifestyle changes, said Minister Ag-lukkaq. CANRISK is a simple tool to help Canadians understand if they are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes so they can make lifestyle changes before its too late.In order to increase aware-ness of diabetes prevention, the Public Health Agency of Canada is collaborating with Shoppers Drug Mart to distribute CANRISK.Shoppers Drug Mart is com-mitted to helping Canadians improve their health and by

putting CANRISK into the hands of our customers and patients, we are encouraging people who may be at risk to take personal action to pre-vent diabetes for themselves and their families, said Dr. Dorian Lo, Executive Vice President, Pharmacy and Healthcare, Shoppers Drug Mart. We are proud to be working together with the Public Health Agency of Canada to advance the pre-vention of chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes.Education and awareness are cornerstones of preven-tive medicine, said Dr. Sandy Buchman, President, College of Family Physi-cians of Canada. Tools like CANRISK can play an im-portant role in supporting the dialogue between people and their health care practitioners about disease prevention.Partnerships between gov-ernments, the private sec-tor, and organizations like the Canadian Diabetes As-sociations are key in the fight against diabetes, said

Michael Cloutier, President and CEO of the Canadian Diabetes Association. Ef-forts to increase screening and detection of diabetes are beneficial for all.

Approximately 2 million Canadians have been diag-nosed with type 2 diabetes and many more are unaware that they have the disease. Complications from diabetes are common and can include blindness, kidney disease and heart disease.By using innovative ways to disseminate risk aware-ness tools like CANRISK, the Government of Canada is helping to ensure that the Canadian public has the in-formation they need to make healthy lifestyle choices. Currently, the CANRISK Questionnaire can be ob-tained at any Shoppers Drug Mart or Pharmaprix loca-tion, or accessed online at www.shoppersdrugmart.ca , www.pharmaprix.ca , or at www.publichealth.gc.ca/CANRISK.

  • Immunization is one of the most effective ways to prevent serious disease.

Starting Jan. 1, 2012, three new vaccines will be added to the British Columbia child-hood immunization sched-ule, to ensure that children in B.C. get the most effec-tive protection possible from preventable diseases.

The Province is expand-ing its current childhood immunization program to include rotavirus vaccine, a varicella (chickenpox) booster, and hepatitis A vaccine for Aboriginal children, both on- and off-reserve. Total purchase costs for these vaccines will be approximately $3.1 million per year.

The rotavirus vaccine is administered orally, and protects infants from diar-rhoea and vomiting caused by the rotavirus. All in-fants born on or after Nov. 1, 2011 will be eligible. The first dose is adminis-tered at two months of age, followed by a second dose at four months.

To help provide lifetime immunity against chick-enpox, a varicella booster dose has also been add-ed to the immunization schedule. This booster has been recommended by the Canadian Paediatric Society and the National Advisory Committee on Immunization as offering improved and longer last-ing protection. Children get their first dose at 12 months. The second dose will now be offered to children at school entry (four to six years of age). Chickenpox is a viral in-fection that causes an itchy blistering rash, but can also cause infections in any part of the body, in-cluding the brain.

In addition, B.C. will now be offering hepatitis A vac-cine to all Aboriginal infants and children. Although

B.C.s overall hepatitis A rates have declined over the past 15 years, outbreaks have continued to occur in Aboriginal communi-ties. A targeted vaccination program for Aboriginal children will help prevent illness in this group. Hepa-titis A affects the liver and can cause fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and yellow skin and eyes. It is easily spread through activities such as sharing of food and chang-ing of diapers.

The new additions to B.C.s immunizat ion schedule have been re-viewed and recommended by the BC Communicable Disease Policy Advisory Committee and the BC Immunization Committee. With these additions, B.C. will continue to have one of the most comprehensive immunization programs in Canada.

To find out more about childhood immunizations, contact HealthLink BC at 8-1-1, or visit: www.Im-munizeBC.ca

    Quotes:

Dr. Perry Kendall, provin-cial health officer Each of these vaccines has been clinically proven to offer significant protec-tion against potentially harmful diseases. By in-vesting in their prevention now, we can prevent pain, suffering and costs down the road.

Dr. Monika Naus, medical director, BC Centre for Disease Control We recommended these three new vaccines be-cause they will give chil-dren extra immunity and protection from infectious diseases. Parents ca n be assured that these vaccines are safe and effective and will prevent serious health problems in the future. Additionally, rotavirus vaccine is given by mouth and does not require an injection. That should be a welcome change to many.

BC Expands Immunizations for ChildrenQuick Facts:

The rotavirus vaccine prevents about three out of four cases of rotavirus disease, including almost all severe cases requiring hospitalizations.

Rotavirus is the most common cause of diar-rhoea and hospitalization for diarrhoea in children under five years of age.

The first symptoms of rotavirus infection are usually fever and vomit-ing, followed by diar-rhoea and stomach pain. These symptoms appear one to three days after infection. Diarrhoea can last from four to eight days.

Chickenpox is most common in children, but most people will get chickenpox at some point in their lives if they have not had the chickenpox vaccine. Even healthy children can have serious disease.

Chickenpox can be es-pecially serious in preg-nant women, newborns, teens and adults, and people who have im-mune system problems that make it hard for the body to fight infection.

The publicly funded varicella immunization program began in B.C. in 2004. Since then, the number of related hospi-talizations has dropped by up to 84 per cent in hospitals that participate in active surveillance.

Some people infected with hepatitis A do not get sick, but can unknow-ingly spread the disease.

While overall hepa-titis A rates in British Columbia stabilized at a low rate following the introduction of a tar-geted immunization pro-gram in the mid-1990s, outbreaks in Aboriginal groups have remained a more common occur-rence.

Simple SENSES can sell your home Chances are, if youre selling your home youll have many buyers viewing your home. Youll have open houses and buyer meetings. This may take place over several days, or several weeks. If your home is in top condition, many potential buyers will want to inspect your home. The more buy-ers, the more likely youll sell your home, faster.

While you want to expose your home to as many buyers as possible, dont forget to use some common SENSE for these showings. Usually, when a buyer is looking for a home, hell meet with a realtor and spend several days looking at houses, from dawn til dusk. The realtor provides feature sheet for each property. A buyer will spend anywhere from a few minutes to an hour or more at each home, eliminating those homes that dont fit his needs. With so many homes to view, the details of a specific home can become blurred. Thats why its common

for a home buyer to rely upon impressions, feelings and comfort level when consider-ing a home.

When it comes to selling your home, there is much you can do to increase the comfort

level, and impression level of potential purchasers. In fact, with some attention to the four SENSES, youll make your home much more appealing. Most important,

  • youll create and impres-sion, buyers cant resist.

Sense of smellRemember moms home made apple pie or bread? Nothing says warmth, com-fort, and security like the combination of vanilla, nut-meg, cinnamon and wheat, baking in the oven. You dont have to bake each time a prospective buyer ar-rives. There are many easy ways to introduce pleasant smells into your home.

Place a piece of bread (sprinkled with cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, or cloves) into the oven on a low tem-perature for a few minutes.

Purchase frozen bread dough. Follow baking di-rections. Its simple and easy.

Have a bakery prepare two dozen unbaked cinnamon buns. Freeze. It only takes a few minutes to defrost. When youre expecting a buyer, pop two or three into the oven, at 425 degrees for about 30 minutes.

Place a few drops of va-nilla on light bulbs. Turn on all the lights prior to a showing.

Purchase an inexpensive potpourri cooking pot. You can add fragrance with oil, beads, spices, or perfume. Leave it simmer and refill every two or three days.

Add a few drops of vanilla, nutmeg or cinnamon to a pot of water and let simmer for a few minutes.

A word of caution. Too much fragrance can be un-pleasant and distracting.

People may wonder what you are trying to hide with an overpowering effect. Buyers will also remember the lingering garlic, onions and curry long after theyve forgotten the color of the bedroom walls.

Sense of SightVisual enhancements can add color, warmth, texture and atmosphere to your home. Colorful pillows, vases with flowers, plants, and attractive afghans pro-vide the feeling of a bright and cheerful home.

A word of caution. Too many decorating items cre-ate a cluttered, crowded feeling. Neutral decorat-ing tends to work best. Anything unusual usually distracts the buyer.

Sense of HearingGentle background music can provide a relaxing at-mosphere for the viewing. Find some elevator mu-sic, that is non-offensive and easy on the ears.

Sense of TouchBe sure that all high-traffic surfaces are clean and clut-

ter free. Its not uncommon for a potential home buyer to run their hands over a bathroom sink, or a kitchen counter. When surfaces are clean and freshly disin-fected, you create a cared for feeling.

When you pay attention to smell, sight, hearing and touch, youll present a more attractive atmosphere for a potential buyer. When you give your home these inexpensive touches, you can help pay big dividends with buyers.
