Insights are born from triumph as well as tragedy, but tragedy can be so wrenching as to make it difficult for us to linger long enough to gain insight. Often, we wish simply to move past the tragedy, put it behind us. I think of the attacks of September 11, 2001 - horrific, inexcusable, and born of a twisted reliance on literalism and fundamentalism that results in rigid doctrines. In the actions of the 9-11 terrorists, we can see the consequences of a failed imagination, a view that relies on fixed dogmas rather than a living God. That should give us new insight in the Christian family as well. Fixed dogmas serve no better in a Christian context than in a Muslim context, or in any religious context. We wind up putting our trust in what is written rather than the One the writings serve. Relying on fixed doctrine also relieves us of any responsibility for discerning the Spirit. A better beginning place, in my view, is to focus on Story. How do we tell the Christian Story? How do we share our understanding of its significance, of its claim on our life, how it differs, or not, from the stories other faiths tell? The various Affirmations of Faith are not best seen as definitive statements of dogma but as poetic expressions of the Christian Story. What insights into the Christian story does your life provide? How have your experiences shaped your understanding of the faith? Our life experiences invite new insights. Relying on fixed doctrine also relieves us of any responsibility for discerning the Spirit.A better beginning place, in my view, is to focus on Story. How is that Story revealed in your life?

Joy Sunday School Class: We’ve been studying “Tradition and Wisdom” from the books of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Solomon. “The Wisdom of Jesus.” will be our topic during the end of October through November. Hopefully with the leadership of Jack, we’ll get more wisdom! Fran Ford has been coming with Marolyn Stout and Ruby Jensen has become a regular. We appreciate and welcome our new friends in faith. Let us thank God for the cooler weather and continue to pray for rain. —Linda Coffman

Share Sunday School Class: The Share Class had wonderful picnic at Pam & John Green’s home on Oct. 15. The food was delicious, and the Green’s backyard is just beautiful. We were only missing two of our class members, and the weather was incredible. What a blessing to have so many great friend-ships in our class. We are in our 4th week of the series, “If you want to walk on the water, you have to get out of the boat,” by John Ortberg. This series challenges us, and reminds us, you are never to old to trust and act on Christ calling to, “Get Out of the Boat!” —Mary Ellen Cromwell

One of the oldest Christian holy days is All Saints Day. Celebrated Nov. 1st each year, All Saints Day is the occasion for honoring all those who have gone before us in the Christian faith – called ‘saints’ not because they lived unblemished lives, but because they are each, in their own way, now part of the great cloud of witnesses in the Christian faith. All Saints Day is the day each Christian community of faith recognizes and celebrates the life of each church member who has died in the past year since last year’s All Saints Day. This year, Lakeside UMC will give thanks for the lives and contributions of three church members – Donnie Roberson, Herb Conyers, and Frank Wolfe. Because Nov. 1st falls on a weekday this year, we will observe All Saints Sunday on Nov. 6th as a central part of the day’s worship. A special feature of this year’s All Saints Sunday observance will be a Bell Banner, built for us by Scott Schmitt. A bell will be hung for each of this year’s deceased members, as well as other bells symbolizing the contributions of other Lakeside members who have died in the past. The banner will become a consistent reminder of the presence and abiding power of the ‘saints’ of Lakeside. John Wesley, father of Methodism, considered All Saints Day one of his favorite days, so it holds a special place in Methodist history. Please make every effort to be in attendance Nov. 6th for All Saints Sunday. Remember to set your clocks back on Saturday night as Daylight Saving Time Ends.

Campus Ministries Apportionment In the fall, some students who have been nurtured in the faith by your church family will leave for college. That certainly conjures up differ-ent images for different people. For some students there is anxiety, while others feel and eagerness to taste freedom. Some parents will feel confident and happy about this next step in the maturing of their child, while others will approach this time with sadness and anxiety. Indeed, the college years are critical in the lives of many persons. For many this is the time when career choices are tested and finalized, a life mate is chosen, and lifetime friendships are formed. The ministry and witness of the church need to be especially present as these major life decisions are in process. Your church is there, reaching out to students—through the campus ministries apportionment. The apportionment helps to support ministry to students on 16 college and university campuses in Oklahoma. There are approximately 108,525

students in these schools. (Oklahoma City University is not included in this group because its ministry with students receives support through the OCU appor-tionment.) This work is not undertaken alone by the campus ministers. There is a local church that works in partnership with each of the campus ministries in order to provide a broader church family for students. Each of the campus ministries requires additional funding in order to support an active and appealing program. Many churches and individuals make contributions in addition to the local church’s apportionment. Money is not the only need of these ministries. They need church people to get involved in their programs, and they need contact information to enable them to reach the students who have been in our churches and who are now entrusted to the care of campus ministry.
