Ageing popula1on: facts • In absolute terms, the number of older persons has tripled over the last 50 years
and will be more than triple again over the next 50-‐year period to reach nearly 2 billion in 2050.
• By 2020 the 65+ popula1on will represent the 25% of the overall popula1on in Europe.
• Due to increased longevity and reduced birth-‐rate: – The annual growth of the older popula1on (1.9%) is significantly higher than that of the
total popula1on (1.02%) – In the near future, the difference between those two rates is expected to become even
larger, as the baby boom genera1on starts ageing in many parts of the world, including Europe.
• The ageing of the popula1on is changing also the workforce scenario in Europe: – currently the ra1o between working people and re1red ones is equal to 4:1; dras1c
reduc1on of this ra1o up to 2:1 in 2050. • Healthcare and Pension systems are struggling to cope with addi1onal demand
also in considera1on that age and disability are strongly correlated: around a fiYh of people over 50 experience severe vision, hearing and dexterity problems.

The elderly society barriers • Barriers to independence, affec1ng the lives of elderly people include:
– Major deficiencies in assistance to the elderly in the transporta1on modes, hampering their social and working ac1vi1es.
– Due to the lack of appropriate retraining, lifelong learning ac1vi1es, and tele-‐working infrastructure, senior workers are oYen confronted with unemployment.
• Social isola1on is a common problem for senior people. The consequences of ageing popula1on present enormous challenges and opportuni1es for ICT.
ITESM-CEM 3
A typical example is the Internet that has become an enabler of social inclusion, as it allows contact to the outside world.
Senior people can walk out of loneliness, by sending e-‐mails to family members and friends all over the world, cha]ng in forums to exchange feelings and ideas, etc.

OASIS vision • OASIS aims at an open and innova*ve reference
architecture, based upon ontologies and seman*c services, that will allow plug and play and cost-‐effec1ve interconnec*on of exis*ng and new services in all domains required for the independent and autonomous living of the elderly and their Quality of Life enhancement. Both the open reference architecture and the related tools will be made available as open source.

OASIS data summary
• EC co-‐funded project (ICT-‐FP7) • Coordinator: Barco FIMI – Italy (Phillips FIMI) • Start/end date: 1 January 2008 -‐ 31 December 2011 • Consor1um: 33 Partners from 12 countries

Target user group • Elderly people who experience mild cogni1ve and physical impairments
due to ageing. • These people have the competence, in most cases, to lead independent
and ac1ve lives, but, are at risk of exclusion due to the slight cogni1ve and physical deteriora1ons that they are experiencing, as well as the complexity and lack of u1lity, accessibility and usability of ICT.
• The OASIS main end-‐user group, can be broken down into 3 sub-‐groups : – ‘Young’ Elderly: ages 55-‐65, i.e. people who are healthy with ac1ve lives, but
who have just started to experience slight deteriora1ons in their quality of life due to ageing.
– Elderly: ages 65-‐75, i.e. people who are healthy, but are more likely to experience mild cogni1ve and physical problems due to ageing.
– ‘Old Elderly’: ages 75+, i.e. people who are very likely to experience cogni1ve and physical deteriora1ons due to ageing.

OASIS modules at a glance • A new Architectural Framework, called “COF-‐Common Ontological Framework” or “OASIS
hyper-‐ontology”. The hyper-‐ontology is open, modular, holis1c, easy-‐to-‐use and standards-‐abiding and allows the interoperability, seamless connec1vity and sharing of content between not only single services but also compe1ng ontologies of the same or different applica1on domains.
• An Open Reference Architecture (also called ‘OASIS Plajorm’), composed by the COF and its support tools, both available as open source, that allow the automa1c or semi-‐automa1c connec1on of exis1ng and emerging ontologies and services to the OASIS Architectural Framework.
• The OASIS System, composed of the new Open Reference Architecture, enriched by an AmI Framework (a mul1-‐Agents plajorm) and the Interac1on Plajorm (allowing automa1c UI self-‐crea1on for new connected services and self adapta1on to the device used, the context of use and the user needs and preferences).
• A wide range of connected applica;ons (over 12 different service types), all integrated within the OASIS System, and interopera1ng in integrated scenarios and Use Cases, covering the needs of the elderly and their caregivers.
• A Pilots test-‐bed, consis1ng of 4 sites Europe-‐wide (in North, Central, South and East-‐ Europe) and all poten1al test environments per site: Living Labs, Sheltered Homes, Independent Living (private) homes.

SP1: Open Reference Architecture, User Interface, Plajorm and Tools
• Building of the open-‐ended reference architecture (COF: Common Ontological Framework) for organising, maintaining and applying heterogeneous ontologies. This architecture framework is aimed to achieve: – Interoperability between different web services from the same or
different applica1on domains. – Sharing of contextual informa1on between different objects and
services. – Seamless connec1vity between hardware, from hardware to service and from service to service.

SP2: Independent Living Applica1ons
• This SP promotes ac1vi1es to enhance the elderly autonomy, comfort, safety, security and health while at home. The aim is facilitated by the following modules: Nutritional advisor: personalization and adaptation of the recommendation and advices to the elder for improving his/her nutrition Activity coach: monitors, supports and coaches several physical activities, aiming to reduce the age-related declines in the musculoskeletal and cardiovascular systems

SP2 (cont.)
• Brain and skills trainer: through different exercises and simulated scenarios, the mental health of persons will be promoted. A set of personalized exercises will maintain his/her memory and mental ac1vi1es level.
• Social rela1on and recrea1on plajorm: building of a social community plajorm, at different levels, in order to fight the social isola1on of elderly people and to facilitate new collabora1ve experiences.
• Health monitoring: management of the elderly people’s health and assurance of their op1mal health status while realising the rest of their daily lives ac1vi1es.
• Environmental control: Domo1cs applica1ons allowing the elderly to be confident in his/her house and contribute to the comfort of the person.
13
SP3: Autonomous Mobility and Smart Workplaces Applica1ons
This SP promotes ac1vi1es to “push” the elderly user out of his/her home, guaranteeing safety, security and comfort. The aim is facilitated by the following modules:
• New func1onali1es, for more independency and safety in their trips, by easing their driving, avoiding the exposure to risks and accelera1ng the emergency rescue procedures.
• New route guidance prototype, incorpora1ng elderly cogni1ve needs and behavioural paqerns.
ITESM-CEM

SP3 (cont.)
• Appropriate mobility services, including journey planning and support while driving (assistance naviga1on, extended emergency call and tele-‐diagnos1cs, driver monitoring and comfort), accessible tourism, leisure and social ac1vi1es.
• The need of older people to remain ac1ve in the business domain can be supported while at home, or anywhere, as mobile users.

SP4: Integra1on, Pilot sites and devices
• All the developed applica1ons will be tested in 4 sites Europewide: – UK – Germany – Italy – Greece, Romania & Bulgaria
(combined site)
• Par1cipa1on of hundreds of users, their caregivers and other stakeholders, in order to evaluate the overall success and to get the required data to op1mise them.
ITESM-CEM 16
SP5: Horizontal ac1vi1es • Management, dissemina1on, marke1ng and exploita1on of
the project concept and results, ethical and gender issues protec1on, training (to familiarize the partners with the technology) and standardisa1on (OASIS plajorm and applica1ons will be submiqed for standardisa1on by the established OASIS world-‐wide Industrial Forum).
