The plans were drawn upand the specifications laiddown - horse-drawn trams
were coming to West Derby.A document was written in
November 1880 by Edward H
AGE OF THE TRAMby Stephen Guy, West Derby Society Allies, engineer to
the Local Board ofWest Derby, givingprecise details of thetram lines.
The system con-sisted of Barker’sPatent Tramway withsteel rails runningalong West DerbyRoad, Mill Bank andMill Lane to the ter-minus at the Village.
Mr Allies stipulateda tight schedule: “Thevarious lines whenonce began shall beeach laid at the rate ofnot less than 300yards per week.
“The contractorsare to employ a suffi-cient number of men
to advance the workas rapidly as may beconsidered advisableby the engineer.
“They are not toobstruct the traffic ofthe streets or roadsfor a longer time thanis absolutely neces-sary and shall notstack material, exceptwhen unavoidable, asto interfere with thefoot traffic.”
A list of pricesreveals that the steelrails, delivered to thesite, cost £7 7s 6d(£7.38) per ton. Aplate-layer was paid4/6 (28p) a day whilea labourer received3/10 (19p).
The new tramswere quicker andmore comfortablethan the old horse-drawn omnibuses. The first bus servicestarted in Liverpoolabout 1833, travel-ling between theTurk’s Head inn atKnotty Ash (next tothe village hall) andthe town centre.
A similar bus serv-ice started from WestDerby Village a fewyears later, runningevery half hour.
The trams startedserving the Villagefrom February 1882. Anew depot, behind theold courthouse, includ-ed a stables and hayloft.
A tramway inspec-tor’s office was built
against the north wallof the courthouse, which meant that theancient stocks had tobe moved. They spentsome time in a gardenbefore being reinstat-ed in their presentlocation to commem-orate the coronationof Edward VII.
The trams were
electrified in 1900,making the horsedepot redundant. Thebuilding later had anumber of uses, lat-terly by RobewallFurniture until 1976.It was later demol-ished to make wayfor a row of shops.
One of the lasttrams is pictured in the
Village on Saturday 23April 1949 just amonth before the serv-ice ended.
• Join the West DerbySociety at the WestDerby Courthouse(built 1586) in theVillage - open 2 pm to4 pm every Sunday,April to October.

ST MARY’SCHURCH,
WEST DERBYby Jean Ashton (Deputy
Churchwarden)
West Derby Village sits in aConservation Area and has many fea-tures of interest and antiquity for visi-
tors to enjoy; TheOld Courthouse, the Yeoman’sCottage and theMonument arejust a few.
Sitting in the heartof the village, and atthe entrance to thehistorical CroxtethCountry Park, is thecentrepiece which isSt Mary’s Church.
St Mary’s wasbuilt almost 160years ago and is afocal point for thewhole area. Thetower can be seen formany miles in alldirections and I havealways found it awelcoming sightwhenever I havebeen away for sometime. For those livingclose by it is also acomforting sound asthe clock bells ringout the time everyquarter and on thehour. The many wed-dings that take placeeach year at thechurch are often cele-brated with a peal ofbells.
Hundreds of serv-ices are held at StMary’s every year;including baptisms,
weddings, funeralsand communions.Special services arealso held in WestDerby Village atChristmas, on GoodFriday and onR e m e m b r a n c eSunday. Many peo-ple attend onSundays and also theWednesday morningHoly CommunionService at 10am. Inthis way the Churchcares for the peopleof West Derby at thecritical moments intheir lives. Each daywe pray for the peo-ple of this communi-ty.
An historic build-ing like St Mary’s isexpensive to main-tain and repairs arenever simple orcheap. But the Rectorand Church Councilbelieve it is worthmaintaining such abuilding as the parishchurch for the benefitof the communityand people. It is fromthis location that somuch work for andwith the people of thearea, from the chil-dren in school toolder folk in our resi-dential homes, origi-nates.
You may have aconnection to StMary’s. Maybe youwere married at StMary’s or attendedour church school orhad your childrenbaptised here.Perhaps you were amember of the youthclub or uniformedorganisations affiliat-ed to St Mary’s. Youmight have a lovedone’s ashes in theGarden of
R e m e m b r a n c e .Whatever the con-nection I am surethat, like me, youwant to see St Mary’scontinue to be a signof hope in WestDerby for manyyears to come. Wehope that all peopleof West Derby - notjust those who wor-ship at St Mary’s -will contributetowards maintainingthis building. It is
wonderful when peo-ple leave a legacy tosupport the Church.Anything you cangive will make sucha difference.
Please would youconsider making asmall regular dona-tion to our “fabricfund” which is usedfor maintenance andrepair works to thebuilding. If you areinterested thenplease let us know by
telephoning thechurch for details(0151 256 6600 or0151 226 5308). Youcan also contact usvia email [email protected] can find detailson how to make anonline donation onour website:www.stmarywestder-by.org

He had a strange, distinctive lookabout him – the haughty expres-sion, the nonchalant air but, mostof all, his penetrating eye.
Vincent Colebrook lived in shabby splen-dour in a villa that once echoed to the soundof laughter and the drone of conversation. Itwas now silent.
It was the period between the wars whenLiverpool was hit by the Depression. Thewheels of industry slowed, fewer shipscame into port and many people were out ofwork.
The modern world stopped at the sand-stone gates of Vermont in the leafyVictorian suburb. At one time theValdemarts and the Colebrooks hadsocialised, when business deals were struck

Vincent ignoredthe passing years. He wrapped himselfin the past as hewrapped himself inhis theatrical cloakwhen he boiled offhis inner rage inlong walks acrossthe city’s parks.
He could afford toignore the realitiesof the 1930s. Hisfamily had grownrich, like many oth-ers, as cottontraders.
My father,Frederic, knew himwell. They had sim-ilar interestsalthough Vincentwas a product of thelast gasps ofVictorian era.
Vincent had arather grumpy oldbutler calledStumble, whowould usher visitorsinto The Presence.Invariably Vincentwould be sitting, legs elegantlycrossed, in hisleather armchair bythe fire.
Adjusting hismonocle, he wouldoffer you the seatopposite and scruti-nise you with hisall-seeing eye.Father said it waslike being examinedby a predatoryinsect.
In his youthVincent had been onthe stage and knewthe power of antici-pation, the strengthof tension and therelief of humour. Hecould be terrifyingand funny in equalmeasures.
“You have beenthough the woodsand sat on the stoneseat at Camp Hill,”was his openingremark on one visit.Father confirmedthat Vincent wascorrect.
“You guessed it –I usually come thatway,” said Dad.
Vincent laughed:“Only partly – themud on your shoesand the sand onyour coat give someof the game away.”
Other so-calledguesses were not soharmless. Oneacquaintance had aterrible shock whenhe visited Vincent
one freezingJanuary day wheneven the rooks andcrows were silent.
Vincent’s facehad he aspect of acadaver, his pierc-ing blue eye peeredthrough the mono-cle as a fish looksthrough the ice of afrozen pond.
“You must notsee her,” he quietlytold his visitor. “Ifyou do, the earthwill collapse andyou will be trappedforever.”
The followingday, the young manwas on his wayacross a field tomeet his girlfriend,
who worked innearby stables.
He saw her, waved – andpromptly vanishedfrom sight. He hadfallen down an oldwell and was res-cued with great dif-ficulty.
At Vincent’sfuneral, father waswatching the coffinbeing lowered intothe family vaultwhen he distinctlyheard a familiarvoice murmur: “Ican see you”.

Sam, male, Border Collie,Aged 2 years
Sam is an absolute sweet-heart who came into DogsTrust Merseyside from a straypound. He can be very nervousof new people but once youhave gained his trust he givesfabulous cuddles. Sam prefershuman company so would liketo be the only dog in the home.
Sam needs a patient homewho can give him the time andspace to gain a bond with him.We do not know Sam’s historybut he does get worried in newenvironments and is a bit of anescape artist so his new ownerwill need to keep a careful eyeon him! Sadly Sam came to us
with a leg that had an oldinjury and unfortunately thisleg had to be removed but he iscoping very well on just three.
Dogs are in fact amazinglygood at adapting to the loss of alimb. Once they are over theactual operation (probably afew days), they very quicklylearn to walk on the other threelegs and once they’re fit enoughto run around you’ll hardlyknow there’s a leg missing.
If you would like to offer ahome to Sam please call DogsTrust Merseyside directly on0151 480 0660, visit the cen-tre at Whiston Lane,Huyton, L36 6HP or visitwww.dogstrust.org.uk

It’s that time ofyear again – butHallowe’en (orEve of AllHallows) meansdaifferent thingsto different peo-ple. The earlyChristian churchsaw it as a day tocelebrate thesaints and it wasalso known as AllSaints Day.
The Celts cele-brated their dead inpagan rituals longbefore Christianitymade it’s presence

Of course, whatwould Hallowe’enbe without seasonalgoodies such asroast chestnuts, tof-fee apples or, inIreland, the tradi-tional barmbrack(fruit bread). Addedto these, the grow-ing popularity ofAmerican treats
such as pumpkinsoup and pumpkinpie now makesHallowe’en a trulymulti-cultural affair, with fun for every-one.
“Trick or treat” isa recent Americanimport which arous-es mixed feelingsbut we, of course, have our old cus-toms such as “duck-apple” or “apple-bobbing”, whichcan be great fun forall the family, andevery home shouldhave it’s own jack-

Former Royal Marine Who Lost HisLeg Due To an IED is turning hisWounds into Wisdom and is now aMotivational Speaker
Aged just 24, Andy Grant is an Iraq andAfghanistan War Veteran and an amputee. Aftersuccessful completion of the Potential RoyalMarine Course, he embarked on the 32-weekbasic training and earned his coveted GreenBeret. Andy joined 45 Commando, RoyalMarines in Scotland and after a tour in Iraq hethen went on to Afghanistan.
On 3rd Feb. 2009, on a routine early morningfoot patrol in Sangin, Helmand Provence, his
best friend and lead-man jumped over a ditch, triggering a wire that detonated 2 IED’s (impro-vised explosive devices) hidden in the ground.Aged just 20 years old, he sustained 27 separateinjuries to his face, four limbs and torso, includ-ing losing his femoral artery and 6cm of bone inhis right leg. He was in a coma for 2 weeks, hos-pital for 3 months, and then spent 18 months inrehabilitation at the Defence MedicalRehabilitation Centre. With injuries to his rightleg not healing as it was hoped, Andy made thelife-changing and heart-wrenching decision tohave a below-knee amputation in November2010. Just 3 weeks after this, with the aid of
crutches and a prosthetic limb, he was up walk-ing.
He was discharged from the Royal Marines on22nd May 2012, and Andy was prompted tothink about what it is he wanted to do in life.Having seen his mum battle leukemia and sadlypass away when he was just 12 years old, to mil-itary life and suffering life-changing injuries, from this Andy developed S.M.A.R.T, a tech-nique that has helped him overcome his person-al adversities in life, and that can be applied inany walk of life. Although his story is unique, the problems and adversities we all face in ourdaily lives are very similar. Andy now spends his

time going into schools, community groups, charities and the corporate world sharing hisexperiences with others, describing how he over-came adversity and showing that it’s how youdeal with the situation that counts, turning any-thing negative into a positive.
On his visits, he takes with him his ‘bag oftricks’ which really engages the audience andcreates some fantastic questions, especially withschool-aged children. The kit includes pieces ofshrapnel taken out of his body, Royal Marineclothing, a selection of his prosthetic legs, and atourniquet. If a tourniquet hadn’t been applied byhis fellow Marines he would have bled to deathwithin minutes and this perfectly highlights theimportance of working as a team.
Andy was awarded Juice FMs OutstandingAchievement Award at their Inspiration Awardsin April 2012. Andy Grant really is an inspira-tion and is working so hard to inspire others, especially children and young people. In January

FIGHTING FITCAMPAIGN
by Paul Coshott
ISSUE2: MOTIVATION(PART 1: BELIEFS)
Hello - thank you for thefeedback I received from thefirst edition of my FightingFit campaign. Since operat-
you think back toyour childhood, howwas your behaviouraffected by whatsomeone else said toyou? Maybe aremark from ateacher or colleaguesuch as “what a stu-pid answer” madeyou think twiceabout raising yourhand again in classfor fear of humilia-tion. Can youremember any strongbeliefs that youformed about your-self or your situa-tion? It is likely thatthese beliefs stillinfluence yourbehaviour today.
Beliefs can play abig part when work-ing towards some-thing, e.g. “Can Ireally achieve that?Am I worthy ofthat?”. If you think ofa belief as a tabletop,it will have 4 legs tosupport it. For exam-ple, if you have abelief that “I’mugly”, then you willneed 4 legs or refer-ences to support thatbelief. “I’m fat, I
have spots, I havebad breath, nobodyloves me”. If youdecide that some-thing is bad then I’msure you could findreferences to back upthat belief. If youdecide something isgood, then I’m sureyou could findbeliefs to back thisup also. You and Ilive through ourbeliefs. What I wantis to help you tochange your beliefsinto more positiveones..
EXERCISE: WhatI would like you todo is to write downall your beliefs thatempower and dis-empower you. Spendabout 10 minutesdoing this and jotdown as many as youcan. Take a momentto review yourbeliefs and circle the3 most empoweringbeliefs on your list. How do theyempower you? Howdo they strengthenyour life? Thinkabout the positiveeffects they have on
ing my own business as aPersonal Fitness Trainerand Life Coach, it’s fair tosay that I have come acrossevery variety of humanbeing you can think of.
There have been many successstories and there have also beensome people who, deep down, have not wanted to change forwhatever reason. I’m quite a deepthinker so when I come awayfrom a session I sometimes think“why aren’t they doing xyz?”This month and next I will betalking about motivation. Thiswill be split up into 2 parts -Beliefs and Values. This monthwe are going to talk aboutBeliefs.
So what are beliefs and wheredo they come from? Beliefs comefrom other people like our par-ents, teachers, peer groups, friends, family and maybe media. In fact from anyone who stillexerts any influence over us. If

you. Strengthen your emotionalinsensitivity and sense of certain-ty that these beliefs are true andreal so they can guide your futurebehaviours.
Now, look at your disempower-ing beliefs. What I want you to dohere is to knock those legs of cer-tainty from under these beliefs.Choose the two most disempow-ering beliefs and ask yourself thefollowing questions:
How is this belief pathetic andabsurd?
Was the person I learned thisbelief from worth modelling inthis area?
What will it ultimately cost meemotionally if I don’t let go ofthis belief?
What will it ultimately cost mein my relationship if I don’t let goof this belief?
What will it cost me physical-ly?
What will it cost me financial-ly?
Once you have answered thesequestions, become fully associat-ed to what these beliefs have beencosting you. Finally, we can’t getrid of a belief without replacing itwith a new one, so write downsome positive replacements forthe limiting beliefs you have justeliminated.
Once you have chosen newbeliefs, think of some referencesor ‘table legs’ that will supportyour new belief. Whatever theresults you are after, think of aperson or role model who isalready achieving results in a par-ticular area and ask them or thinkabout what their beliefs are..

“I couldn’t be more pleased with the team’sdisplay” enthused a delighted manager, JohnLeary: “This was a great team performancein which everybody was involved. We playedsome great stuff and were well worthy of vic-tory. If we can continue to play like that andmaintain consistency then we will be in thereckoning come the end of the season. But thisis just one game and we have to maintain themomentum and not let our guard drop”.
The Croft have more tough fixtures comingup so one can only hope that they can keep upthis level of performance. One thing is certain:games like this will bring the crowds in!

EIGHT GOALTHRILLER
As South Liverpool FC commencetheir first season at second divisionlevel, the future looks bright in theWest Cheshire League after an unbeat-en start and a three point lead at thetop of the division.
Manager Martin Ryman has brought in sev-eral new players to improve the squad andsome have shone brightly: striker CameronDalton, previously at Waterloo Dock andCollegiate Old Boys, has nine goals from hisfirst seven games and midfielder Neil Best, signed from Cheshire Lines, has providedfresh impetus and has three goals into the bar-gain: defensive midfielder Steve McLinden, also signed from Cheshire Lines, has provid-
ed weight and strength in the middle of thepitch. The team have scored 31 goals in theirfirst 8 league games, including 5 goals oneach of three successive Saturdays; 5-2against Capenhurst Villa with Dalton baggingfour, 5-2 against Prescot Cables Reservesafter being 2-1 down just after half time and5-2 against last season’s divisional champi-ons, Ashville Reserves, with a superb goal byMcLinden.
South’s reserve team gained entry into thethird division of the West Cheshire Leagueand have won five of their first eight leaguegames despite losing their main strikers,Mitchell McNally and Francis Evans, for alarge part of the early season due to injury
and marriage respectively. The 3-3 homedraw with Belfry saw the team achieve apoint with two penalties in the last minute, expertly put away by Ross Kennedy. Theteam’s solitary defeat at rivals from Formby,Redgate Rovers, was the result of a late injuryafter the three substitutes had already beenused with the 10 men conceding 2 goals in thelast five minutes.
The youth team have also got off to a goodstart and having finished 4rd last season arefavourites to take the title. A 6-1 home winover a youthful Custys was improved by a 2-0 win at Vauxhall Motors with spectaculargoals by Kieran Parker and Callum Brown.
