Both girls were in the medals, reaching thefinals in a very tough competition watched byover 2000 people at the K2 Centre in Londonwhich hosted the 2012 British Taekwondo Open.

In herbest performance to date, Ruby showed herclass throughout a one-sided fight with anarray of amazing kicks to the head and body.

Amy went on to the final with a tough con-test against London’s Zaynab Farrugia fromHadri TKD; this was a hard fought fight butAmy dominated throughout and led all theway to the buzzer where she won gold with 13points to 7 to become British Open championat C class in the -51kg category.

Liverpool City Mayor Joe Andersonwas recently approached by a developerthat had identified the council-ownedStonebridge Cross site off the East LancsRoad in Gilmoss as the preferred locationfor a major new facility.

A planning application is due to be sub-mitted at the end of August, and if suc-cessful the scheme could be complete byautumn 2013.

A consultation is already getting under-way with the local community to informthem about the potential proposals.

Mayor Joe Anderson said: “This is ahugely exciting proposal which has thepotential to be a real game changer forthis part of the city.

“It will create over a thousand qualityjobs on a scale which has not been seenfor many decades.

“They approached me following themedia coverage we have had as a busi-ness friendly city, and attracted by thespeed of decision making that the newMayoral arrangements can deliver.

“This is really good news for a part of

The castle gatescreaked open andthe coach rum-bled out into aterrifying bliz-zard of snow andice.

The passengershuddled together asthe horses pulled thecarriage slowly downthe forested moun-tain road. The pitchblack night was onlybroken by eerieglimpses of the fullmoon through gaps

STRANGE TALESby Anton Valdemart

in the towering, sin-ister trees.

Slowly out of themenacing night theyheard chilling howlssounding like lostsouls. At first thetravellers thought itwas the wailing windin the tree tops butthe sound graduallygrew louder andlouder.

Then there was thepadding of dozens offeet in the snow. Theman put his head outof the window andpeered into the velvetdarkness.

The pack of wolveswas getting closer –then one huge brutebroke away from therest and leapt at thecoach. It ferociouslyclawed at the wheelbut caught its pawand fell yelping intothe snow.

Other wolves, crazed with hunger, fell upon the injuredbeast, tearing it apartin a feeding frenzy.

The man fell backinto his seat and reas-suringly hugged hiswife and child. Theforest was thinningand the road waswidening – soon theyreached the stationand a train headingwest to safety.

It was 1871 and mygrea t -g randfa the rCount Julius

Valdemart was leav-ing Silesia for the lasttime with his wifeElisabeth and three-year-old sonFerdinand. The Countis pictured in the cer-emonial uniform ofthe Valdemarts.

His family hadlived in their turretedfortress home in theSudeten Mountainsfor hundreds ofyears. Silesia wasrich in naturalresources and theValdemarts ownedlucrative coal andcopper mines as wellas stone quarries.

Silesia’s valuableresources attractedthe attention of thePrussians and in1742 most of theregion was absorbedby the growing impe-rial power in the Warof the AustrianSuccession.

The Valdemarts, however, were littleaffected at first intheir remote moun-tain stronghold.

The final strawcame when Silesiabecame part of theGerman Empire withthe formation of theGerman state. Juliusand Elisabeth feltthey must leave andstart anew.

Through familyinterests, they knewLiverpool quite well– Julius had visitedonce or twice as partof his business deal-ings and now decid-ed this was wherethey could flourish.

In those days nopassports were requiredand few questions asked– and a solid oak chestfull of gold accompa-nied the Valdemarts toLiverpool.

Julius, who was

born in 1835, left sixyounger brothers inSilesia – Wenceslaus,Sigmund, Frederick,Henry, Charles andGerhard. Once thefamily home wassold they also settledin Liverpool.

Over the years ourfamily amassed manystrange tales from athome and abroad.Letters and documentsform a unique archiveof the unexpected.

I have preservedand collated themhere in the library atthe family home inLiverpool, originallybuilt by my great-grandfather, and willshare them with youover coming months.

West Derby Tuition Ltd has been oper-ating for several years delivering suc-cessful 1:1 tuition and small groupwork in Maths, English and Science. We have been working with local com-munities and local schools supportingAdults and children with their specificeducational needs.

We are specialists in Special EducationalNeed and we also offer training and consul-tancy for schools and companies. We arepresently working with a multi national com-pany throughout the country delivering train-ing and consultancy.

In 2011 I opened a second company calledthe Donohue Foundation For Education CIC,were we usefully bid and won a grant toenable us to work with children from localschools and communities, improving theirLiteracy and Numeracy skills.

We consider ourselves fortunate to be basedin the wonderful building called theBroughton Hall Centre, which is within theConvent of Mercy, within the grounds ofBroughton Hall High School. The buildingwas built in 1860 for Gustavus C. Schaube ofHamburg a prominent Liverpool merchant. The beautiful conservatory was added to thehouse between 1870 and 1880.

At a dinner in 1868 Schaube entertainedThomas Ismay and a Mr Wolfe, Schaube’snephew. It was agreed between them to haveships built by Harland & Wolfe and Schaubewould finance a company called the OceanicSteam Navigation Company, which laterbecame the famous White Star Line and thenthe Cunard White Star. The first ship built wascalled the Broughton, and then the companywent onto build the infamous RMS Titanic.

The Broughton Hall property was pur-chased in 1925 by the Liverpool communityto establish a girls school, eventually a schoolwas built on site which is now known asBroughton High School. In 1968/69 a newconvent was also built on site, this replacingthe Mother House at Mount Vernon, whichwas compulsorily purchased to make way forthe Royal Liverpool Hospital. In 1993 the newconvent was deemed too big for the needs ofthe community and it became the first babyhospice now known as Zoes Place. The con-vent then moved back into the main propertyBroughton Hall, which over the years havebeen a Preparatory School and a home for eld-

DOG OF THE MONTHBruno is a handsome andfriendly eight year old Blackand Grey Cocker Spaniel atDogs Trust Merseyside.

He came to the rehoming cen-tre from the dog warden whobrought him in as his family did-n’t want him anymore. Bruno hasgot cataracts which restrict hisvision, but he is currently under-going tests at the centre to deter-mine whether this is operable.

Despite his eyesight problemsBruno is bouncy and full of ener-gy! However he does need a lot ofhuman company and gets verydistressed when left alone. Hetherefore needs to be rehomedwith someone who is at home alot of the time. Bruno can berehomed with children aged overeight but not with cats.

The rehoming centre is alsocurrently running desperately lowon stocks of tinned dog food, so isappealing to readers for any tinsthey can spare.

We first started arelationship withfood when wewere in our moth-er’s womb. Wewould tell ourmum what kindof food we need togrow.

This is why mostmothers will havefood cravings. Thebaby is telling itsmum what it needs.

As we get older weare told what weshould and shouldn’teat which in turnruins our relationshipwith food. If we goback to our earlieryears and eat whatwe feel like, overtime we will eat a

healthy diet, Ibelieve. The key tosuccess here is to eatwhen you are hungryand stop when youare satisfied. Whenyou have eaten toomuch your body willgive off a sign that ithas taken in toomuch, i.e. indiges-tion, stomach ache, burping, etc.

Imagine you havea chart in your head. So, for example, 1 =so hungry you couldeat a horse and 10 =so full you couldburst: only try andeat when you are at a5 and stop when youare at a 6. So you caneat anything provid-ed you follow that

guideline. The sec-ond point here is todrink plenty of water. When you go intodehydration modeyour body may giveoff a signal that it isthirsty and this canget misinterpretedfor being hungry.Vital organs like theliver, brain etc. needwater so you shouldalways make sureyou are hydrated. The best way to dothis is to check yoururine once or twicethroughout the day tosee how clear it is.The clearer it is, themore hydrated youare.

My third pointhere is to think aboutwhat to achieve. Asyou are seeing your-self achieving thisnew goal, ask your-self : ‘why am Idoing this?’, then askyourself: ‘what do Ineed to do to achievex?’

Finally when youhave a moment torelax, visualise your-self going into a cin-ema, “sit at the backrow” and watch afilm about yourself, but fitter and slimmerand with new confi-dence. Watch thefilm back and forth afew times. Whenyou’re ready, in yourmind enter the filmand live the experi-ence of feeling fitter, slimmer and moreconfident. If there isany sound in thefilm, turn it up. Ifthere are any feel-ings, spread themaround your body.Really try and get intouch with the feel-ings your new weightand fitness give you. This exercise willsharpen your modali-ties towards youroutcome and willhelp you becomemore motivatedtowards your goal.

Important points:• Use a smaller

plate• Chew your food

at least 20 times• Start seeing

yourself fitterand slimmer

• Your imaginationis stronger thanyour will.

In next month’sissue: Working onself-belief.
