    Synopsis: King Solomons Mines

My story was King Solomons Mines written in 1885 by H.Rider Haggard.Famous for his jungle novels, King Solomons mines was one of his most famous.

The story is not clear where it is based but after my research into king Solomon's

mines and the real story behind it, I found that the mines were thought to belocated in Zimbabwe, Africa.

    The story

After finding a map drawn over 300 years ago, Allan and his men venture into un-known battlesand adventures to reach the mines of King Solomon. The story section that I was given firstdescribes the travellers walking and up into the mountains also known as the Three Witches. These mountains stand next to each other in a row. Up to the mountains lead a path that breaksaround a huge pit. Across this pit was the entrance to the cave of King Solomons mines.

Surrounding the massive pit was three statues, two males and one female, this brought not muchattention to the adventures as they preceded to the cave. Gagool, the tribes lady who was leadingthem, brought them through the doors of the mines, after such a trip one traveller, Foulata, wastoo tired to continue and was aloud rest. Allan and the rest of his men continued through to thevast sighting of diamonds upon imagine.

Gagool saw this as the opportunity to close the door and trap the men inside, she got as far as thegate before she was met with Foulata. After a bloody battle, Gagool was crushed under the largerock door due to her lose of concentration and footing. Foulata had fought bravely but had beento injured to continue and passed by the time Allan and his men arrived. The mourned for theirfriend. Once realising that they were trapped, the men hunted for the source of air to the mines, which may lead to an exit. They each grabbed a hand full of diamonds, enough for a life time of

wealth and found their exit through a hole an animal had dug.

    A breakdown

After reading the story, what clearly stuck out for me to design was the mines, thecave doors and the mountains. This is what I began to concentrate on the most atfirst.

I quickly thought to put the doors, rather on its own, but collaborate it withanother scene, for example the mountains, leaving me with a free space to conductanother scene. I went with the mines again, one just inside and one further downwith the diamonds. I felt that this was the object of the story and that I wanted toproceed in drawing.

    Identifying my Visual Concept

Taking what I had learnt from the story, my first thumbnails and the research behindthe real mines, a few things changed for me.

Mainly discovering where the mines are actually rumored to be lead me to Africa, so

this decided my colour pallet. Tribal colours, reds, oranges and greens being mymain source, though in my mountain scene I will be adding a hint of pink flowers asdescribed in the story where the wild moors ran up the slopes A wild moor being apinkish purple plant found natively in Scotland.

The main thing driving my ideas is the whole point of the story, the mines. I have

taken a few different approaches on this, some soft and some more harsh with jaggedrocks.
