1. The Jim Pattison centre of excellence at the Penticton campus is one of the world’s most sustainable buildings. It opened its doors to students in June 2011 and is predicted to create 100 per cent of its energy needs.

2. each year the college hosts an annual Powwow, celebrating and honouring aboriginal culture.

3. Students in kelowna eat thousands of sandwiches from Fezziwig’s every year - chicken almond is the most popular choice.

4. One of the province’s largest folk fests takes place every year in Salmon arm - the Roots and Blues festival.

5. The Vernon campus overlooks kalamalka lake - known for its stunning hues that range from cyan to indigo. ever wondered why kal lake is so beautiful? Scientists credit the precipitation of calcite.

6. The Penticton campus is home to the college’s newest recreation facility and gymnasium.

HEALTH AnD SOcIAL DEVELOpMEnTDEGREE

Bachelor of Science in nursing This two-year program, in partnership with the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus (UBCO), provides years one and two of the four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree program offered at UBCO. Students who successfully complete all courses in the first two years are granted admission into UBCO’s BSN program and guaranteed course transfer credits to complete the final two years of the degree.

DIPLOMAS

Early childhood Education

This two-year program provides students with the training and coursework to work as early childhood educators in daycare and preschool settings. Specialized training in infants and toddlers, and supported child care, which meet government licensing requirements, is also included in this program.

Human Service Work

This two-year program provides the skills and coursework for graduates to work as social service/mental health support workers or as community and classroom support workers. This generally requires graduates from this program to be client-centred, able to explore and challenge themselves (thoughts, feelings, behaviours) and to be open to change.

practical nursing

Graduates of this 18-month diploma program will be eligible to write the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration exam in order to become Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) in B.C. This program prepares graduates to provide care, in partnership with other health professionals, to selected clients in a variety of settings. This is a collaborative, values-based program that focuses on partnerships between teacher, student and client.

Therapist Assistant

This two-year program provides the training to work as an assistant to occupational, physical and recreational therapists. The two-year diploma of full-time study includes four semesters of coursework plus 16 weeks of practical experience in clinical settings.

CERTIFICATES

certified Dental Assistant

This 10-month program provides students with the skills to work in a dental office. Certified Dental Assistants work as team members and require excellent communication skills, commitment to dental health, and must be kind, honest, reliable, positive, conscientious, and respectful of human diversities. This program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada and approved by the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia.

Health care Assistant

This six-month program is designed to provide students with opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to function effectively as frontline caregivers and respected members of the health care team, in community and facility settings. Under the direction and supervision of a health professional, graduates provide person-centred care aimed at promoting and maintaining the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social well-being of clients/residents. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are prepared to work in any level of continuing care, including: home support, adult day care, assisted living, and complex care (including dementia care units).

DIPLOMAS

Advanced culinary ArtsTwo years - Kelowna

This program combines traditional culinary training with an education in business administration to prepare graduates for employment in the culinary/hospitality industry.

Trades Technology Teacher EducationTwo years - Kelowna

Completing this diploma program is the first of three steps to becoming a Secondary School trades or technology teacher. It covers six key areas: carpentry, electronics, metal fabrication, industrial design, drafting and design, and automotive service technology.

APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMSLevels 1–4 (depending on program length)

Apprenticeship training at Okanagan College combines traditional classroom instruction with practical hands-on experience in well-equipped shops and labs.

Students enrolled in apprenticeships benefit from paid on-the-job training, work experience and post-secondary classroom instruction. Upon completion, an apprentice is required to write an exam in order to receive the Journeyperson designation.

FOUNDATION (PRE-APPRENTICESHIP) CERTIFICATESFoundation programs are the place to begin your trades education. Previous experience is not required for entry. Many students follow their passion, aptitude and creative interests into a fulfulling career in trades. Most programs are offered at several campuses and intake dates vary. ASSOCIATE DEGREES

Associate of Arts Degree

An Associate of Arts degree from Okanagan College gives you the skills you need to manage the influx of information we all face on a daily basis. Through prescribed courses in Arts and Science, graduates learn how to communicate, think critically, and apply research and knowledge that will help make a contribution to their field of study, their employer and their community.

Associate of Science Degree

An Associate of Science degree from Okanagan College will help you develop the practical experience and theoretical knowledge that will open the door to a myriad of career options or to further studies. Many students go on to study in the fields of dentistry, medicine, veterinary medicine, optometry, forestry, hi-tech, statistics and data analysis, and more.

DIPLOMAS

Diploma in General Studies

This flexible program provides study in a wide area of courses from Arts and Science.

Diploma in Human Kinetics

This two-year program includes a solid foundation in the art and science of human movement. Students will learn principles, theories and practices in the areas of health and wellness, sport sociology, sport psychology, motor learning, biomechanics, exercise physiology, motor development, and human development and physiology. The program offers three distinct streams: Health and Fitness; Health and Physical Education; and, Kinesiology and Health Science. The diploma also ladders into Okanagan College’s Bachelor of Business Administration degree program.

Diploma in Journalism Studies

This two-year diploma introduces students to journalism and media criticism and to the contemporary social and cultural context within which journalists work. Completion of this program is intended to provide students with the liberal arts education necessary to further study in journalism.

Diploma in Media and cultural Studies

This two-year interdisciplinary diploma program offers students a range of courses from a number of departments. Students will examine the rich interrelationship between media and culture in contemporary society and will explore how culture is produced, commodified, communicated, regulated, and consumed.

Diploma in Writing and publishing

This two-year diploma provides students with a solid grounding in creative and literary writing, publishing, communications and business. In addition to widely transferable academic courses, students will receive applied training in fields such as print and web-based publishing, accounting, marketing, and management, as well as creative, cultural and professional communications.

Diploma in criminal and Social Justice

This two-year program will provide students with an Arts-based criminal justice education. Throughout the program, students take a variety of social justice related courses in sociology, psychology, political science, and criminology, in addition to elective Arts courses.

Diploma in Environmental Studies

This two-year diploma has three options, one in interdisciplinary environmental arts, one in environmental management and one in environmental science. This diploma program allows students to understand the physical principles governing the environment and the social and cultural aspects that influence human behaviour towards the environment.

Diploma in International Development

This two-year diploma provides students with an opportunity to engage with current global issues such as poverty, environmental degradation, racial and gender discrimination, and political deficiency. Students acquire a multidisciplinary understanding of the current issues in international development and learn to apply appropriate techniques to analyze the issues and problems of development in the global context.

The diploma has two options: International Development Governance and International Development Management - a joint diploma program between Arts and Business.

CERTIFICATE

Advanced certificate in communication

The Advanced Certificate in Communication provides students with skills in applied communications. Students develop competence in areas such as professional writing, public relations theory and practice, management communications, marketing writing, and visual communication.

The certificate will be of interest to students who are looking to complement their previous post-secondary experience by focusing on an applied, career-related field.

civil Engineering Technology

This two-year diploma program provides students with the theory and practical knowledge to work as Civil Engineering Technologists in public and private settings. Graduates are prepared to work on the design and construction of buildings, bridges, highways, streets, parks, subdivisions, dams and drainage, municipal works, and surveying. Students in the co-operative education option and graduates are currently in high demand in the construction industry.

Electronic Engineering Technology

This two-year diploma program prepares students for dynamic and rewarding careers in the field of electronic engineering technology by providing training in analog and digital electronic systems and equipment. Graduates find jobs in the communications, microcomputer applications, and system controls fields that involve the installation, operation, maintenance and sales of complex electrical and electronic equipment for government agencies, educational institutions and private companies.

Mechanical Engineering Technology

Graduates of this two-year diploma program are involved in the design, manufacture, installation, operation and maintenance of machine and mechanical devices. Students will learn the fundamental engineering principles and practices as well as gain a working knowledge of the fundamentals of power, fluids, materials, manufacturing, thermodynamics, HVAC, quality, instrumentation and control. network and Telecommunications Engineering Technology

This two-year diploma program provides training in local-area and wide-area voice/data communications. Topics include Internet and intranet technologies, computer network design and configuration, network management and security, data communications, wireless and telephony systems. Graduates design, build, manage and maintain the high-speed networks that governments, companies and organizations rely upon.

Water Engineering Technology

This unique two-year diploma program provides training in the design, use and maintenance of water systems, wastewater and waste disposal facilities, and environmental monitoring. Areas of study include hydrology, hydraulics, instrumentation and control, water and wastewater management, biology and chemistry, as they relate to environmental monitoring, collection analysis, treatment and distribution of water.

Accounting AssistantThis 19-week program is designed for students who have some prior business education or experience and wish to specialize as accounting assistants. Graduates are prepared for immediate employment performing accounts payable, receivable, payroll or general accounting assistant duties. A three-week practicum is included.

Administrative AssistantThis 37-week certificate provides graduates with advanced office administrative skills. Students will learn office procedures, accounting, secretarial skills and computer software applications.

Administrative Assistant Fundamentals This 17-week program prepares students for entry into higher-level Office Administration specialty programs such as Legal Administrative Assistant, Accounting Assistant, and Medical Administrative Assistant.

Business Administration This flexible, 30-credit program is designed by the student to meet immediate career and educational goals. It provides the opportunity to take first- and second-year business courses from a variety of options, and ladders into the diploma and degree programs at Okanagan College.

Business StudiesThe Business Studies Certificate allows students to focus on specific disciplines of particular interest to those who are already employed and are looking to further develop their knowledge in a specific area.

Legal Administrative Assistant corporate/conveyancingThis 20-week program gives students an introduction to conveyancing and corporate commercial law as well as wills and estates and includes a practicum in a law office. It prepares graduates to work in conveyancing as an administrative assistant.

Legal Administrative Assistant LitigationThis 18-week program gives students an introduction to law, family law, personal injury law, and litigation and includes a practicum in a law office. It prepares graduates to work in litigation as an administrative assistant.

Medical Administrative AssistantThe Medical Administrative Assistant is a 480-hour online specialty certificate program designed for students with prior office administration experience or training who wish to attain the skills required to work in a medical or allied health office as a medical administrative assistant in a variety of public and private settings.

Office AssistantStudents enrolled in this 22-week program will learn essential business skills such as business English, business correspondence, computer essentials, office procedures, word processing, business math, spreadsheets and Internet usage. This program is designed to be an introduction to the Administrative Assistant Certificate.

Office ManagementThis certificate provides graduates of the Administrative Assistant program with the skills they need to manage an office. A broad base of business courses that emphasize managerial aspects of secretarial work are covered. Graduates will be prepared to write the proficiency exams leading to the Certified Professional Secretary designation.

pathway to professional AccountingThis program is designed for students planning to pursue a professional accounting designation: Chartered Accountant (CA), Certified General Accountant (CGA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA).

post-Diploma certificate in Business AdministrationGraduates with a diploma or degree in Business Administration may receive this post-diploma certificate by completing an additional 18 credits, of which at least 15 credits must be at the second-year-level or higher. Certificates are available for completion in the Fundamental, Intermediate and Advanced Levels.

provincial Level Diploma

Students who complete the Provincial Level are eligible for the B.C. Adult Graduation Diploma (Adult Dogwood).

Upgrading courses are offered in Biology, Chemistry, Composition, Computers, Career Planning, English, First Nations Studies, Geography, History, Law, Mathematics, Physics, Science, General Studies, and Social Studies.

English as a Second Language

Okanagan College offers six levels of instruction in English as a Second Language (ESL). At level four, students can begin to combine ESL courses with academic courses. On successful completion of level six, students receive a Level Six – Academic ESL certificate.

ESL courses are offered in English Essentials, Grammar, Pronunciation, Reading, Speaking, and Writing.

Adult Special Education

Okanagan College has libraries at each of the four main campuses: Kelowna, Penticton, Salmon Arm and Vernon. Each campus library provides research resources, personal research assistance, computer access, printing, photocopying, media viewing facilities, and individual and group study space. Online research resources, including the library catalogue, electronic books, newspapers, magazines and journals, and personal research assistance are available, both on and off campus, through the library website.

There are a total of 35 student laptops available for loan from each of the campus libraries. These can be borrowed without charge for the day, or rented for periods up to one week.

Students who attend Okanagan College have the opportunity to play competitive baseball and hockey as a part of the Coyotes Athletics program – which operates out of Kelowna.

The Coyotes hockey team competes in the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL), which includes Selkirk College, Simon Fraser University, Thompson Rivers University, Trinity Western University, the University of the Fraser Valley and the University of Victoria.

The Coyotes baseball team competes in the Canadian College Baseball Conference, which includes teams from Thompson Rivers University, the University of Calgary, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Vancouver Island University and the Prairie Baseball Academy.

Okanagan College offers a wide range of credentials in a variety of disciplines. Many programs and courses transfer to other universities in B.C. and beyond. Fall, winter and summer sessions, combined with opportunities for full-time, part-time and distance learning, offer students flexible learning options.

B.c. Secondary School graduation or equivalent (see mature applicants) is required for entry into all degree, diploma, associate degree and most certificate programs. Students who will graduate prior to 2013 and who are completing their mathematics courses through the old curriculum (Principles of Mathematics or Applications of Mathematics) are advised to check the Calendar for complete admissions requirements.

ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGIES

civil Engineering Technology Diploma

60% in English 12*. 67% in Pre-calculus 11, or 60% in either Pre-calculus 12 or Foundations of Mathematics 12, or 60% in Okanagan College MATH 120. Applicants who do not satisfy the mathematics requirement may write the Okanagan College Mathematics 11 Challenge Exam and must receive 64%. Physics 11 or 12 or Applied Physics 12 is recommended. Mathematics requirements must be satisfied no more than seven years prior to enrolment. Students applying for Sept. 2013 intake must also receive one of: 60% in Physics 11, or 50% in Applied Physics 12, or 50% in Physics 12.

Electronic Engineering Technology Diploma

Completion of Okanagan College’s Electronic Engineering Technology diploma program with a minimum graduating grade average of 80%.

Mechanical Engineering Technology Diploma

60% in English 12*. 60% in Pre-calculus 12 or 60% in Okanagan College MATH 120. Applicants who do not satisfy the mathematics requirement may write the Okanagan College Mathematics 12 Challenge Exam and must receive 64%. Physics 11 (Physics 12 recommended). Chemistry 11 or 12 is strongly recommended.

network and Telecommunications Engineering Technology Diploma

60% in English 12*. 73% in Information and Communications Technology II or 67% in Information and Communications Technology 12. 67% in Pre-calculus 11, or the equivalent Advanced Level ABE mathematics course, or 60% in either Pre-calculus 12 or Foundations of Mathematics 12 or the equivalent Provincial Level ABE mathematics course, or 60% in Okanagan College’s MATH 120. Applicants who do not satisfy the mathematics requirement may write the Okanagan College Mathematics 11 Challenge Exam and must receive 64%. Physics 11 or 12 is recommended.

Water Engineering Technology Diploma

HEALTH AND SOCIAL DEvELOPMENT

All applicants for these programs must submit a criminal record check. Additional requirements may include evidence of a negative tuberculin test taken within six months before application, Foodsafe certification, a physician’s report and first aid certification. Bachelor of Science in nursing (years one and two)

70% in English 12*. Biology 12. Two other approved Grade 12 courses. A minimum average of 67% is required in four approved Grade 12 courses, which must include English 12 and Biology 12. Chemistry 11. Pre-calculus 11 or Foundations of Mathematics 12. Chemistry 12 is recommended.

certified Dental Assistant certificate

60% in English 12*. 60% in Biology 12. 60% in one of: Chemistry 11 or 12; Physics 11 or 12; Applications of Physics 11 or 12.

Early childhood Education Diploma

67% in English 12*, or 26/40 on the LPI, or 50% in an English course at the 100-level or higher.

Health care Assistant certificate

60% in English 12* or a Language Proficiency Index (LPI) score of at least four. A Grade 11 science or Adult Basic Education science at the 70 and 80 level is recommended. Human Service Work Diploma

60% in English 12*, or 24/40 on the LPI.

practical nursing Diploma

70% in English 12*. 67% in Biology 12 and 70% in Pre-Practical Nursing Anatomy and Physiology (PPNUR 113). 67% in either Pre-calculus 11 or Foundations of Mathematics 11, or a minimum grade of 70% in either Introductory Algebra 11 or both Math 084/085.

Therapist Assistant Diploma

Option A: 60% in English 12*. Chemistry 11. One of: Biology 12, or BIOL 122 or BIOL 124. (Biology 12 or BIOL 122 is strongly recommended.) Option B: One of ENGL 100, 150, 151, or 153. BIOL 131 and 133. PSYC 111 and 121.

FOUNDATIONAL PROGRAMS

Adult Academic and career preparation

Applicants must be at least 19 years of age, or have been out of the public school system for at least 12 months and be at least 18 years of age, or have completed Grade 12.

Adult Special Education

Applicants must be at least 19 years of age, and attend a pre-entry interview with the instructor. Please see Calendar for detailed requirements.

English as Second Language

All applicants must take an assessment examination. Based on the results of this examination, applicants will be placed in the program level and courses, which will best suit their needs. International students must have a study permit.

TRADES FOUNDATION

Advanced culinary Arts Diploma

60% in English 12*. 60% in one of: Pre-calculus 11, or Foundations of Mathematics 11, or Apprenticeship and Workplace Mathematics 11.

Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) M

67% in English 11. 67% in one of: Applications of Mathematics 11, or Principles of Mathematics 11, or MATH 040. Science 11 (Physics) or equivalent. Apprenticeship and Workplace Mathematics is not accepted.

Trades Technology Teacher Education Diploma

60% in English 12*. 60% in Apprenticeship and Workplace Mathematics 12, or 50% in one of: Foundations of Mathematics 11 or Pre-calculus 11. 60% in any Science 11 course.

APPRENTICESHIP

Apprenticeship programs offered at Okanagan College require that you are working in the trade and are a registered apprentice with the Industry Training Authority (www.itabc.ca). Once you are a registered apprentice you can contact the Apprenticeship Office at Okanagan College to reserve your technical training at 1-800-621-3038 or visit the office at B120 on the Kelowna campus. An apprenticeship training schedule is also available online: www.okanagan.bc.ca/apprenticeship.

Another pre-requisite to becoming an apprentice is to ensure you have the appropriate level of secondary school education. Many trades require a Grade 12 graduation with a minimum of Grade 11 math and sciences. Students who entered Grade 10 should take Apprenticeship and Workplace Mathematics 10. This course is designed for students going into the trades or planning not to enter an academic post-secondary program.
