Search
Google custom search of the site content. Also a Google custom search for other OER sites so that course creators can find other OER they might reuse or remix into their course.
OpenLearn, OLC and FutureLearn
• If OU originated content (even if co-production) then goes on OpenLearn.• If content partly OU and partly other organisations or if only by other
organisations then goes on OpenLearn Create. Or could go to FutureLearn if organisation is a paying member (must be monetising element).
• On OpenLearn Create course can have your own badging assessment strategy, not bound by OU BOC rules, can have OU name but cannot have OU logo on badge.
• OpenLearn Create can host perpetually open or time bound courses, FutureLearn only hosts time bound courses.

What is on offer now on OLC?
• DIY basic course (no charge, you take as long as you like to build using Moodle only functionality)
• Course built for you by OMIL* (e.g. 24 hour BOC type course costs £27k plus overheads, time to build and test can be quick if content ready and not complex, shorter courses cheaper than this)
• Open or closed cohorts• Badged courses (optional)• Statement of Participation (optional)
• Collections of courses (DIY no charge or OMIL build for you - quick build - cost £3k per collection which includes ongoing service charge for platform software maintenance. Course production is separate cost)
• Portal site for courses own header, footer and navigation but using site taxonomies and functionality (design costs plus £40k or more to build, depending on complexity, 3 to 6 months to build)

New OpenLearn Create design
• Site redesigned, site not yet mobile responsive (planned).• Free courses page has filters using new site taxonomy system. • New dedicated search page.• Get started (for course creators) with course builder guide• Course pages redesigned to accommodate both Moodle only and
Moodle with XML (OU structured content) courses.• Course creators can set up collections of their own courses or can
ask us to set them up on their behalf.• Article functionality allows users to create a standalone article in
Moodle which the system recognises as an article not a course.• Improved Statement of Participation to include learning outcomes
and course overview.• Moodle Stats and data dashboard for Moodle reports of course data.
New Article feature● The article feature
enables content to be published which has a distinct ‘article’ rather than ‘course’ layout.
● Articles are identified as ‘articles’ rather than ‘courses’ on the site
● Articles can have more than one author listed, with a lead author
● An article is a single page layout of text (with images and embedded video optional)
● An article can go in a collection with courses and other articles
Coming very soon

• Handbook functionality allows users to create a standalone handbook in Moodle which the system recognises as an handbook not a course (no enrolment available).

OU XML coursesAs part of the service the OU offers we can build courses using XML – eXtensible Markup Language. XML content provides the following:• clear navigational links between pages of materials (next, back) • hide/reveal activities • unmarked formative quizzes • interactive learning activities of various kinds (simple and
complex)• embedding video/audio files
We render the marked up XML content to a course and this generates additional alternative formats of course materials from the same file for learners to download and study offline (e.g. Word, PDF, eBook versions). These alternative versions do not synchronise with the tracking system for the online materials, so learners need to return to online materials for their progress through materials to be recorded.

Stats & Data dashboard for Moodle reports
• Manage your courses area for course providers includes links to data reports for their courses
• The stats & data dashboard includes some newly built reports, some existing reports and a link to the other Moodle reports which have not yet been displayed in the new design layout
• If the course provider has collections and sites they will also be able to access data reports for these from the same dashboard (currently only OLCymru and OLC have site reports as OLCymru is the only portal hosted by OLC)
Manage courses page, showing links to data reports for each course

Stats & Data dashboard for Moodle reports
Stats and Data dashboard for a specific course, showing the Number of course views report (the data can filtered to a specific date range and can be downloaded). Please note that as new fields had to be set up (this is a new report), the figures shown are actually from the date of the code release in September rather than the original publication date, so the number of course views since publication will actually be much higher.
