HOMEOPATHIC AND NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE
HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINE
HISTORY
• Originated in the late eighteenth
century.
• Derived from two Greek words
(hómoios, "-like" and páthos,
"suffering") that mean "like
disease.“
• Have a curative effect when given
in very dilute quantities to sick
people.
• Believed to stimulate the body's
own healing processes
HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINE
•Homeopathic Medicine orHomeopathy is the practice of
medicine that embraces a holistic,
natural approach to the treatment of
the sick.
• Developed in Germany by Samuel
Hahnemann (Physician)
HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINE
•Homeopathy is holistic because it treats theperson as a whole, rather than focusing ona diseased part or a labeled sickness.
•Homeopathy is natural because itsremedies are produced according to theU.S. FDA-recognized HomeopathicPharmacopoeia of the United States fromnatural sources, whether vegetable, mineral, or animal in nature.
PRINCIPLES OF HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINE
1. Similarity
2. Individualization of treatment for
the patient
3. Use of the minimum dose
1. SIMILARITY • Fundamental idea of homeopathy is the ‘Similarity’
stated by the German physician Samuel Hahnemann
(1755–1843) in 1796.
• This implies that substances capable of causing
disorder in healthy subjects are used as medicines to
treat similar patterns of disorder experienced by ill
people.
•He viewed health as a dynamic process.
•Aimed to direct and stimulate the body’s self-regulatory
mechanisms.
2. INDIVIDUALIZATION OF TREATMENT FOR THE PATIENT• Characteristics of the chosen medicine should be as similar
as possible to the characteristics of the illness in the patient.
• This closest match is called the ‘simillimum’.
• Similarity may be at the ‘whole person’ level, taking into account the symptoms and signs of the disease, the patient’s physical build, personality, temperament and genetic predispositions.
• This high level of individualization is not always required: ‘similarity’ may be at a more specific, local level, especially in the treatment of acute conditions.
3. USE OF THE MINIMUM DOSE
•Doses used in homeopathy range from those that are
similar in concentration to some conventional
medicines.
•Vigorous shaking of the solution together with impact or
‘elastic collision’ (known as succussion) during the
manufacturing process is a key element in the
production of homeopathic medicines.
GOALS OF HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINE
•Seek to cure the patients on the physical, mental, and emotional levels.
•Safe treatment, as it uses medicines in extremely diluted quantities.
•Its non-toxicity makes it good choice for treatment of children
•Inexpensive
•Colds and flu may be effectively treated
GOALS OF HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINE
• Effective in treating infections, circulatory problems, respiratory problems, heart disease depression and nervous disorders, migraine headaches, allergies, arthritis, and diabetes.
• Used to assist the healing process after surgery or chemotherapy.
• Good treatment to explore for acute and chronic illness.
SOURCES OF HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINES
1. PLANT KINGDOM
• 60% of the homeopathic medicines are
prepared from one or more parts of
plants.
• Leaves, roots, flowers, seeds, and
berries, may be used in the preparation
of the medicines.
• All types of plant, benign, poisonous,
and carnivorous, have been used as
homeopathic medicines.
2. MINERAL KINGDOM
• Approximately 20% of the homeopathicmedicines are prepared from minerals.
• Therapeutic properties of almost allknown metals and non-metals andmany important compounds have beenexploited in homeopathy.
• Eg. Aurum metallicum (gold), Kalicarbonicum (potassium), Natrummuriaticum (common salt), and Silica(sand)
3. ANIMAL KINGDOM
• Some homeopathic medicines
are derived from certain animal
products.
•Animal products, such as snake
poison, spider poison, etc., are
used in extremely minute doses
to prepare homeopathic
medicines.
4. DISEASED TISSUES
• Some homeopathic medicines
are prepared using tissues or
secretions containing bacteria,
viruses, and other microorganisms.
• Thus, homeopathy advocated the
therapeutic use of miniscule
amounts of microorganisms long
before the introduction of
vaccines.
5. HORMONES AND HEALTHY TISSUES•Healthy human/animal tissues
and secretions are also used to
prepare homeopathic medicines.
• Examples of such medicines are
Thyroidinum and Adrenaline.
6. IMPONDERABLES
•Certain energy sources, such as
magnetism, x-ray, radiation, etc.,
are also used to prepare
homeopathic medicines.
HISTORY
•Naturopathic medicine dates back to the time of Hippocrates -
400 BC.
• The term “Nature Cure” was coined in 1895 by Dr. John Scheel
of New York City to describe his own method of health care.
• In the late 19th and early 20th century, naturopathy evolved
and grew enormously, rivaling conventional medicine in
popularity.
NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE
HISTORY
•Natural medicine flourished until about the mid 1930's
when economic and political factors shifted the emphasis
to conventional (“allopathic”) health care.
• Interest in naturopathic care resurged in popularity from
the 1960s onward in response to high-tech care that
sometimes had significant side effects (such as
thalidomide).
NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE
NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE
• A form of alternative medicine that employs an array
of pseudoscientific practices branded as "natural", "non-invasive", or
promoting "self-healing".
• The ideology and methods of naturopathy are based
on vitalism and folk medicine, rather than evidence-based
medicine (EBM).
Naturopathic medicine
•Naturopathic medicine is a distinct system of primary
health care that addresses the root cause of illness or
disease and promotes health and healing using natural
therapies.
Naturopathic Principles• First, do no harm
•Cooperate with the healing powers of nature
•Address the fundamental causes of disease
• Treat the whole person through individual treatment
• Teach the principles of healthy living and preventative medicine
Philosophy of Naturopathic Medicine
Primum Non Nocere: First of all, to do no harm
Vis Medicatrix Naturae: To act in cooperation with the Healing
Power of Nature
Tolle Causum: To address the fundamental causes of disease
Tolle Totum: To heal the whole person through individualized
treatment
Docere: To teach the principles of healthy living and
preventive medicine
Praevenire: To practice prevention with patients and the public
Naturopathic Medicine
•The primary goal of naturopathic treatment is toaddress the cause of illnesses, rather than simplytreating or suppressing symptoms.
•Utilizing alternative therapies such as botanicalmedicine and clinical nutrition, naturopathicmedicine offers natural treatment options forchronic disease, hormonal imbalance, painmanagement, weight loss and much more.
Single medicine is the first choice as per homeopathic principles but the complex symptom picture presented by the patient makes it difficult to prescribe the similimum at times.
Naturopathy isn’t a Scientific Treatment Technique
Allopathic or other treatment cannot be taken with Homeopathy
