Welcoming new Catholics

Every parish has a part in Jesus’ ministry of welcoming people who want to follow Jesus and helping those already here to grow in their faith. This year we have three people who have asked us to help them in becoming members of the church. The best way for us to do that is through the ministry of RCIA (“Rite of Chris an Ini a on of Adults.”) RCIA is not a series of “classes” but a way for members of the church to mentor others into our community. To help them see what being a Catholic is about and introduce them to the life of our parish. Deacon John has been a great guide in this process.

Now – this year – we need the help of some of the parish to welcome and walk with those seeking to join us. You don’t have to be any kind of “expert”, in fact you will find your own faith and knowledge will benefit from this experience.

Pray about this need and opportunity. If you think you might be able to help or if you have ques ons, please let me know. Call or email me at the Parish Office.

And, if you are “seeking” but not yet a member of the Church, or a Catholic who has never received Eucharist or the Sacra-ment of Confirma on, RCIA is for you too. Let me know.

Thanks Fr. Paul SJ Daily Prayer This Week Every day of every week, we have the precious opportunity to get to know Jesus more in mately and to become more a racted to him, with the result that we grow in a desire to be with him more and to be more like him. Few of us have the wonderful opportunity to follow the special voca on of becoming contempla ves, but we can be more contempla ve in our everyday lives. This can happen for us, not by "leaving the world" but by le ng our Lord have a place in our very busy daily world. If we keep developing the habit of being contempla ves in the midst of our days, we will indeed be blessed to find in macy with God in our everyday lives. It doesn't take more me. It just takes focus.

From the first few moments of our day, and in very brief conscious moments throughout the day, we can speak with our Lord. We can no ce what is going on in within us - our fears, our fa gue, our joys and our sorrows - and tell our Lord what we are feeling and ask for the graces we need.

This week, we can be conscious of the invita on of Sunday's gospel to be less judgmental and more aware of how gener-ously and undeservedly we are loved by God. In a very brief moment, we might ask our Lord to give us the grace to share the light, the gi s we've been given, generously.

On another day, we might find ourselves doing what the Lord has asked us to do, but tempted out of our fear and anxiety to "take too much with us," in the sense of not really trus ng that our Lord will give us what we need for the journey. This would be a great day for some "friend to friend" conversa on with our Lord, before the challenge, in moments during it, and a er it is completed, expressing our gra tude.

We can grow in freedom by not being afraid to ask our Lord about anything. The answer surprisingly comes in our own in-ner peace and trust. By Sunday, we can find ourselves judging others less, and more freely and consciously choosing to turn away from occasions of sin. h ps://onlineministries.creighton.edu/Collabora veMinistry/Prayer/A2-OT-25.html

Spiritual Exercises of St. Igna us to be offered star ng in October (This Week is the last chance to apply for this retreat )

The “Igna an Spiritual Exercises in Everyday Life” will be presented by the Igna an Spirituality Partnership of Maine, which includes the Jesuit Community, Cheverus, and our parish plus others. This year because of the covid restric ons the two monthly mee ngs will take place via zoom. During each mee ng, par cipants will learn about the Exercises and also have me to be in a small group with two spiritual directors/guides and other par cipants. This retreat is designed for people who have had some experience praying with Scripture, and who have had experience talking with someone about their prayer. If you have an interest or ques ons, please contact one of the parish Jesuits.

The Spiritual Exercises of St. Igna us Loyola can be transforma onal. In four stages, referred to as “weeks,” par cipants contemplate various aspects of their lives, as well as the life, Passion, and Resurrec on of Jesus. Leading and encouraging women and men to make the journey of the Exercises is a key priority for Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) globally and its part-ners in mission today. Space is limited. To register for the retreat or for more informa on, visit www.igna anme.org/spiritualexercises. Once registered, organizers will arrange for an in-person or online mee ng to talk more about the re-treat and pair you with a spiritual director/guide. The retreat cost is $425, but financial aid is available. The cost includes all materials and averages out to around $25 per session. Any ques ons, please let us know. Thanks Fr Paul SJ

November Elec on Vo ng

Cas ng a vote is a key responsibility of each of us as ci zens. This year because of covid, it is probably wise to plan to vote “absentee.” You will also be able to vote in-person at your City or Town Hall prior to Elec on Day. To vote absentee you need to request a ballot: by going to your City or Town Hall in person, by calling your City or Town Hall, by wri ng to the City or Town Clerk asking for a ballot, or by filing online through the Secretary of State. ( h ps://apps.web.maine.gov/cgi-bin/online/AbsenteeBallot/index.pl ) The Press Herald has described all the safeguards in place to guarantee no one votes more than once and to be sure it re-ally is you who are vo ng. You must be a registered Maine voter (you can s ll register now), you will need your legal name and your address, your phone number. If you request online, you need your email address. The Post Office states it is equipped to handle mailed-in ballots. It handles more mail than that each Christmas and Mother’s Day. However, it is best to request your ballot now. It will be sent to you in October. Return it by mail early to ensure delivery on me, just as you’d do Christmas mailing early.

The Season of Crea on begins on September 1! Join members of the Igna an family, along with thousands of Chris ans around the world, to celebrate, pray, and take ac on during this ecumenical celebra on that lasts though St. Francis Day on October 4.

In a me of overlapping crises, holding space to act on climate change can feel overwhelming. This Season of Crea on, start simple with ONE

new daily habit for a healthy planet.

Step one: Choose ONE daily ac on to repeat each day throughout the 34 days that will renew your rela onship with crea on or that will allow you to explore a radical new way of living with crea on. Step two: Sign up and officially pledge to commit to ONE habit daily throughout the 34 days of the Season of Crea on. Step three: Put your healthy habit for the planet into ac on! If desired, we will send a daily email or text message reminder to keep you mo vated. We hope that you will consider celebra ng the Season of Crea on with us as we upli the theme of Jubilee. Please reach out to me at bdavis@igna ansolidarity.net if you have any ques ons or concerns! Sign up for the Season of Creation Today

How to Understand?

As many of us try to understand the protests and some mes violent responses in our country this year, perhaps it is help-ful to recall an earlier episode of struggle and violence too? I’m thinking of the tex le strikes here in New England and par-

cularly of the January-March 1912 strike in Lawrence, MA (now known as the “Bread and Roses” strike). Over 25,000 women mill workers – some of them children – went on strike protes ng a wage cut imposed by the mill owners. The strike was opposed with the use of force by the owners who were supported by the government, schools, and many cler-gy. The American Federa on of Labor did not support these women. Ul mately, and unbelievably, the women prevailed. A result was that tex le workers throughout New England were granted a pay raise – presumable here in Biddeford and Lewiston as well. Perhaps the words of this poem, wri en at the me by James Oppenheim, can also capture the pain and the resolve of some of those protes ng today? Fr. Paul S.J.

US Census - have you responded yet? The every-10-year US Census is happening now. If you have not yet responded please do. Many ques ons including federal funding for States are determined by these results. Ac-cording to the US Cons tu on, "every inhabitant" of the country is to be counted. There is no requirement that you be a US ci zen, and it is illegal to eliminate any resi-dent from the census count. You can respond online h ps://2020census.gov. or by phone 844-330-2020 (English language), 844-468-2020 (Spanish), 844-461-2020 (Vietnamese), 844-494-2020 (French), 844-474-2020 (Portuguese).

As we go marching, marching, in the beauty of the day A million darkened kitchens, a thousand mill lo s gray Are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses For the people hear us singing, bread and roses, bread and roses. As we come marching, marching, we ba le too, for men, For they are in the struggle and together we shall win. Our days shall not be sweated from birth un l life closes, Hearts starve as well as bodies, give us bread, but give us roses. As we go marching, marching, we're standing proud and tall. The rising of the women means the rising of us all. No more the drudge and idler, ten that toil where one reposes, But a sharing of life's glories, bread and roses, bread and roses. As we come marching, marching, un-numbered women dead Go crying through our singing their ancient call for bread, Small art and love and beauty their trudging spirits knew Yes, it is bread we. fight for, but we fight for roses, too.

Our Lady of Hope 2020 Voter Guide (Part 4) Human Dignity , Solidarity, Subsidiarity, The Common Good

Over the past weeks our Parish Social Jus ce and Peace Ministry has prepared a guide to help us form our consciences and cast our vote this fall in ways that are true to the teachings of our Church. They have prepared a Guide to Vo ng and also are sponsoring a Town Hall mee ng on October 6th to discuss these issues. The guide and comments are all based on Catholic Social Teachings. These four basic principles of Catholic Social Teaching are found in the USCCB’s Faithful Ci zen-ship Guide: guide (pdf link: h p://www.usccb.org/issues-and-ac on/faithful-ci zenship/upload/forming-consciences-for-faithful-ci zenship.pdf) . These principles will guide our discussion on mely topics, with the understanding that our ap-proach is from a posi on of faith, rooted in the gospel, and not for poli cal purpose. Each week we will highlight different topics of importance to Catholic voters. On October 6th the OLH Social Jus ce & Peace Commission will host a parish town hall mee ng to discuss the guide in its en rety. For more informa on or further conversa on, please contact [email protected]

REFUGEES & MIGRANTS: The Good Samaritan parable instructs us to assist strangers in need. Pope Leo XIII’s On Condi on of Labor (1891) affirms the right to migrate to sustain one’s life and one’s family’s. Church teaching recognizes the right of countries to regulate immigra on, with due concern for jus ce and charity. With over 70 million refugees worldwide, what should be our responsibility, given our natural wealth, development, and prosperity, to assist with rese lement? What is our role as Catholics, in welcoming the stranger in our midst? HEALTH CARE: John XXIII’s Pacem in Terris (1963) declares health care, the safeguarding of life, a right. Affordable quality healthcare is necessary for a full and produc ve life. Abor on and euthanasia are alien to Catholic belief. What policies are best for all? EDUCATION: Gravissimum Educa onis (Va can II) affirms the inalienable right of all to an opportunity for quality educa-

on. How do we best ensure this right in an equitable and fair manner?

From September 23 through November 1, you are invited to join other volunteers for 40 Days for Life – 40 days of prayer and fas ng for an end to abor on. You are also invited to stand and peacefully pray during a 40-day vigil in the public right-of-way outside Planned Parenthood, 443

Congress Street in Portland and to help spread the word about this important community outreach. If you would like more informa on – and especially if you’d like to volunteer to help, please contact: Joanne or Claudia at (207) 613-5910 or visit us on the web address shown below:

Parish to offer a new Ministry to the deaf and hearing-impaired Community star ng this Sunday September 20th.

Fr. Kevin Hughes, S.J. who has just joined our parish staff has had an interest in ministry to and with the deaf community for a number of years, and he is trained in American Sign Language. Because of his knowledge and generosity, Our Lady of Hope parish will begin offering a Signed Mass. The Mass will be spoken as well as signed. 08 Twenty-Fi h Sunday in Ordinary Time

Coming to Mass… (September 18th)

We have now experienced two months of re-opening Masses. Our safety prac ces (pre-registering for weekend Masses, cleaning a er each Mass, careful mask-wearing, social distancing and limi ng the size of in-person a endance) have worked well so far. Thanks to our Welcome Ministry and to everyone’s pa ent care.

There is available space at almost all open Masses. If you feel safe in coming, we invite you to return.

Open Masses: Saturday 4:30 PM, Sunday 7:00 and 9:00 AM, 5 PM – at St. Pius X Church And Sunday 10:00 AM at St. Joseph Church. Pre-registra on is required.

How to register for Weekend Masses Call the Parish Office (207-797-7026) Monday through Thursday 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM before the weekend you wish to come. You must speak to a member of the Parish Staff. Reserva ons cannot be made by leaving a message or sending an email. You must make a reserva on for each week – no “standing reserva ons” can be taken. You will need to give your name and contact informa on and the number of people in your “party.” People living together can sit together. All others are two to a pew.

Daily Mass (Monday-Friday) 9 AM at St. Pius X Church – is open. No need to pre-register. You must sign in when you ar-rive. You must wear a mask.

What about our other Masses?

We have not been able to re-start the Saturday 4:00 PM Mass or the Sunday 8:00 AM Mass at St. Joseph Church or to re-open the Saturday 8:00 AM Mass (livestreamed from St. Pius X Church). Un l members of the parish step forward to take on the needed Welcome Ministry these Masses cannot happen. Can you help us make these Masses available to all?

Can you be part of our Ministry of Welcome?

Thanks to parishioners who are now serving as Ministers of Welcome at each of our open Masses (greeters, ushers, cleaners). Your generous service makes it possible to welcome our parishioners to live Masses.

1. Those serving need to be willing to be scheduled for a Mass on a con nuing basis. We can expect that these condi ons will be with us for months yet

2. All those serving will have to a end a training session. See our website/Facebook page for a video ( h ps:// www.dropbox.com/s/tdi651oninbxg8w/STM%20Safety%20Protocols.mp4?dl=0 ) on what coming to church will look like.

3. Please contact the Parish Office to become part of this important Ministry

Thanks to everyone for your pa ence and understanding and good will!!

Welcome Back It is great to see and hear our students back at St. Brigid School. It has been a good start to the school year with an enroll-ment increase over last year. Blessings to all returning or new students, school staffs, and families.

***Men’s ACTS Retreat*** As Catholics, our faith calls us to move forward on a spiritual jour-ney to become more than we are at this me. We may feel weak in

this regard; direc onless, maybe. Our Catholic community pro-vides structures to support us on our journey. The upcoming Men’s ACTS Retreat provides an opportunity to make our spir-itual journey, our rela onship with our Lord, a priority and focus for a few short days. The retreat runs Thursday evening, November 19th, to Sunday morning, November 22nd. That is the weekend before Thanksgiving. Transporta on to and from the retreat center will be provided. Take this opportunity – set the

me aside now. To register and for more informa on, visit h ps://pothe.org/acts-retreat or contact Tom Luna (518-9236)

A call to sacrifice….

We’ve had some parishioners call about Mass but won’t come un l “their Mass” returns. Many peo-ple these days are making sacrifices, se ng aside what they’d prefer and doing what is possible or best for others. Isn’t a ending and par cipa ng in Mass a greater value than the specific me or place where that Mass is celebrated? The 4:00 PM Sat-urday and 8:00 AM Sunday Masses at St. Joseph can open as soon as enough parishioners come for-ward to be greeters, ushers, and to do the simple and quick cleaning needed a er each Mass. If you want these Masses back, it is really up to you. We are also looking for another person or two for these ministries at the Sunday 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM Masses.

Vo ng – a moral act

Cas ng a vote is an important and moral ac on. How do I make a good decision? Recently the Jesuits of the US and Cana-da issued a document offering guidance in this decision-making process by applying ethical and spiritual values rooted in the vision of St. Igna us. A few highlights are offered here. For the complete document see: I sent the link separately It would be hard to share a more countercultural message than the one Pope Francis offered during a 2013 homily: “Good Catholics meddle in poli cs, offering the best of themselves, so that those who govern can govern,” he said. “Poli cs, ac-cording to the Social Doctrine of the Church, is one of the highest forms of charity, because it serves the common good. I cannot wash my hands, eh? We all have to give something!” Despite the generally sad state of our shared poli cal life today, bringing our voices of faith to the public sphere through ac vi es like issue-based legisla ve advocacy, community organizing and vo ng is essen al to following Jesus as disciples. Why? Because civic par cipa on is one powerful way we can work to uphold Christ’s Gospel mandate to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, welcome the stranger, clothe the naked and care for the ill and imprisoned with compassion (cf. Ma hew 25:31-46). We feed the hungry through direct service, mee ng individual needs as they arise. But we also go to the root of social ills and try to change systems and structures so people won’t go hungry anymore. This la er work re-quires ge ng involved in poli cs. The COVID-19 pandemic is a stark reminder that we are united as one human family and are called to cooperate for the common good and dignity of all. Igna an civic engagement requires confron ng systemic racism We try to find God in all things — including poli cs. It is our dedica on to finding God in all things that draws us toward the poli cal life in the first place. The founda on of our civic engagement is recognizing the dignity of all human beings, each one of whom is created in the image of God and bears the face of Christ, from the me of concep on un l natural death, and at all stages in between. As someone who is commi ed to following Jesus, how does my poli cal par cipa on reflect that commitment? How might Igna an spirituality and discernment guide my par cipa on in civic life? How might my civic engagement, in turn, become a part of my prayer? Poli cs can be a challenging place to find God. What prayers or prac c-es can help me to see God at work there? A big, worthwhile spiritual challenge is to prac ce detachment from our own poli cal views. We are called to make choices in light of the Gospel. Our challenge is to let the teaching of the Church, our faith, the Gospel, the person of Christ himself, to be the light by which we organize our poli cs and our involvement in the poli cal field, and in the poli cal world,” Bish-op Daniel E. Flores of Brownsville, Texas, said on this topic in a February 2020 interview. “We have to be involved in socie-ty, but the Gospel has to be the principal lens through which we judge things. But some mes — and we aren’t even always conscious of it — we allow our poli cs to be the lens by which we judge the Gospel. And I think that’s one of the sources of the division within the body of the Church.” When we let Catholic social teaching guide our priori es, we might find that our consistent defense of human life and dignity leaves us “poli cally homeless,” staking out posi ons on issues that don’t conform to any party’s pla orm. The difficult choices in civic life call for discernment. Real discernment requires us to nurture our rela onship with Christ in that deepest part of our self. It is not about imposing our views on others, but about collabora ng to learn more about God’s hopes for our world and how best to live those out, in the humility that we cannot do it alone. Conclusion 1.Our poli cal ac on emerges from discerning how Christ is already ac ve in the world and coopera ng with his saving work, as opposed to ac ng out of our own limited ideologies. 2. Listening is at the heart of civic engagement — listening to the marginalized, the young, those we don’t agree with, the cry of the Earth. True listening is detached from our own preconcep ons and prejudices. “Contemplation and Political Action: An Ignatian Guide to Civic Engagement” h ps://www.jesuits.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/CivicEngagement-v10.pdf

I had some concerns, as I suspect most people entering

senior living may have, regarding our social lives and whether we

would develop friends here. Not only have my wife and I been able

to maintain existing relationships but we have met several new

people here… people we now consider to be our friends. The life

enrichment program is designed to nurture interaction between

people. The hostess in the Main Dining Room seats new guests

with compatible table mates and within days, individuals

become neighbors and friends. The floor we live on has

become our new neighborhood. The people living here

seem to understand that all of us have been new

to The Park Danforth at some point. Everyone is

so friendly here. My wife and I could not feel

more at home.
