shuttle relay formation and built a pyramid with 15 of their cans. The first team to successfully build their pyramid and be sitting down at the start line was declared the winner of the race. The teams were awarded points based on how many cans they brought in as well as the creativity of their design and were also given points based on where they finished in the relay race. The total of these points were added together and the Xavier Team were the overall winner of the 2021 Social Justice Shield, narrowly edging out the Gleeson team. Even though the teams competed against each other for the shield, all teams united together as one School Community for a common cause which was to help those less fortunate than ourselves. Each year about 1.8 million people across Australia seek support with either food supplies or shelter from the St. Vincent de Paul Society. In the winter months, there are many times when the demand for support exceeds what the St. Vincent de Paul Society can offer. This year we set ourselves a goal of 1000 non-perishable items of food and I am happy to announce that as a school community we achieved this goal. This means that over 1000 people who may not have had a meal will be able to enjoy a meal thanks to our donations. The charity shown by all of our families is a great example of how we demonstrate our faith in action, by actively living out the gospel message of respecting human dignity and helping those in need. I would like to thank all of the children and their families for their generous donations. Confirmation and First Eucharist Celebrations On Tuesday 25

Hi All, It is very hard to believe that we are nearly at the end of Term 2. Student Reports The teachers are currently working on finalising the Term 2 reports for the students. The reports will come home on Thursday this week. The reports are just one way in which we formally communicate with parents about their children’s progress at school. When you receive the report, if you would like an opportunity to discuss its contents with your child’s class teacher, please approach the teacher to organise a meeting time to do this. Xavier wins the 2021 Social Justice Shield On Friday 11

th June, the whole

school participated in our annual charity event. In the morning we celebrated as a school community with a whole school Mass that was celebrated by Father James. The focus of this Mass was on supporting those who are less fortunate than ourselves. After the Mass, the 4 sports teams competed against each other for the Social Justice Shield. The event consisted of 3 parts. Firstly all children were asked to donate cans of food or non-perishable items and place these in their team colours. These cans were then collected by the team leaders and counted. In the 2

nd part of the challenge,

each team was able to use their items of food in order to make a creative design which had a social justice message. I was amazed and inspired by the creativity, insight and deep thought that was shown by all of our students as part of this challenge. Photos of the children’s designs along with the descriptions provided by the children can be seen later in this newsletter. Finally, as a fun way to finish the event, each team was able to form a relay team and they then raced up and down a track in a

celebrate this special occasion for these young children as they made the decision to commit themselves as fully initiated members of the Catholic Church. Father James officiated at the Mass and it was a wonderful celebration. It was great to see the children so well supported at the celebrations by their families and friends. I would like to congratulate all of these children on this special occasion. End of Term 2, start of Term 3 This term finishes at 12.30pm on Friday 2

nd July.

The first day of Term 3 for the children will be Monday 19

th July.

Thank you As this is the last newsletter for this term, I would like to take this opportunity to say a very big thank you to all the staff for their great work and to all the parents who have been supporting with their children’s learning throughout the term. As I keep saying, Our Lady of Hope School is a wonderful community to belong to, and it is the hard work, commitment and caring approach of the staff, and the support and positive attitude of the parents, that make it so. I hope you all have a safe and enjoyable time with your children over the school holiday break and I look forward to working with you all again next term. Kind regards,

School Fees 2021 Fees were invoiced in full at the beginning of the year and statements were mailed to all families early in Week 2. If you have not received your statement please contact us. Term 2 fees should have been paid by 4 June 2021. If you have not paid, please do so immediately or contact me if you are having difficulty. Just some timely reminders: Are your payments up to date? Please check your statement to see if your fee payments are up to date. If you have an amount in arrears and do not have a payment plan in place with us there will probably be a note on your statement. Please action as a matter of priority. Direct Debit health check If you have a direct debit in place please ensure that:

• It is of a sufficient amount to cover your fees in full by the end of the year – if an amendment needs to be made this can be communicated by email using the address below.

• You have sufficient funds to cover the amount on the scheduled date. If you see a number of rejections on your account, there will probably be a note – once again please contact me if you need to amend your details.

Do you think you may qualify for the Lower Income Fee (Previously School Card)? If you think your income falls within these limits please remember to apply for School Card if you haven’t already done so. School Card must be applied for each year. School Card is assessed on the previous year’s income, so if you had a drop in income last year due to COVID you may qualify. School Card applications can be made online or by completing the application form which is available on our website or from the Front Office. If you have any questions regarding fees, please feel free to contact me. Charmaine Gillard, Bursar ([email protected])

Student Health & Wellbeing

Dear Parents, we are now in cold and flu season. If your child is unwell at home i.e. coughing, sneezing, vomiting, lethargic, headache or earache, please do not send them to school. Children need time to rest and recover in the warmth and security of their own homes. We have a

small first aid room with first aid trained staff to look after students who may sustain an injury throughout the school day. Sending children to school in an infectious state can often lead to the spread of illness to other students and staff. Therefore students who are sent to school sick will be sent home. Our staff are also encouraged and supported to be able to rest at home if they are unwell; they too have a duty of care to your children in not exposing them to illness. Parent Volunteers are also discouraged from volunteering if you have cold or flu symptoms. In the interest of reducing the spread of illness at school please support us with this request.

Students returning to school after injury or serious illness If your child sustains a fracture or serious injury, undergoes an operation or has time off school for a serious illness they require a Doctor’s certificate for their absence and a clearance letter to be able return to school stating what they can and cannot do i.e. fitness, PE and for how long. In certain circumstances i.e. broken leg or recovery from surgery we can arrange for a student to spend time in a buddy class when their class is at PE/fitness or in the office at recess and lunch with a buddy so that they are not at risk of being knocked in the school yard, however we need time to work with the class teacher to set plans in place. If any pain medication is required you will need this included in the letter from your GP and the medication you provide will need a pharmacist’s label with your child’s name giving clear instructions as to the amount to be given and how often. For students who may need assistance with toileting after an injury or operation, an appointment is required with Leadership. Should your child sustain a serious injury or undergo an operation please be mindful before returning them to school too quickly as our students are very active at school and their bodies need some time to heal. For extended absences, please liaise with your child’s teacher to request school work to be available for your collection for your child to complete at home when well enough.

Enrolments at OLOH To all current families; if you have a young child due to start school in 2022 or 2023, please ensure that you have lodged an Enrolment Application (you would have received correspondence from the school if you have lodged paperwork). Enrolment applications can be obtained from the front office or via our school website:- OLOH Enrolments If you are not sure please email us at [email protected] and we will check our enrolment records.

School Absentee Notification If your child or children are going to be away for any reason (i.e. illness, family/social, medical/dental appointment, car trouble, running late etc.) we ask that parents please contact the Front Office either via email [email protected] or if this is not

Once the shield has been engraved, it can be viewed in our Admin building.

Gleeson came first for the Sculpture design.

Gleeson

“We have chosen a heart to show that we should treat others like we would like to be treated. Two people holding hands represents love and with this love we can get through hard times together. The words ‘We are One’ is to remind us not to discriminate against

others because of their differences.”

MacKillop

“The tree symbolises that we can grow in strength like

the branches and to have courage to believe in

yourself.”

Xavier

“Our sculpture shows Jesus on the cross who sacrificed his life to save us. Just like Jesus, we are

helping people in need who are less fortunate than us.”

Ignatius

“The love heart symbolises how we care for one

another. The two people on the side depicts people

helping each other, which is what God would like us to

do. We made the word ‘Hope’ to symbolise that Our

Lady of Hope students can help and care for each other

and those in our community like Jesus did.”

OLOH Playgroup In the last few weeks at Playgroup we have explored many things. We had a big focus on reading and read lots of books and had fun with animals/items to match our stories. Then in conjunction with "Walk Safe to School Day" we focused on the importance of walking/riding safely to school. We read a story about walking safely to school. We have also explored 'Number' with a focus on counting and had lots of activities to support this and enjoyed a story and songs with a 'number' focus. We had a special focus on the world acclaimed author Eric Carle, after his recent passing. We read his very popular book "The Very Hungry Caterpillar". The children also enjoyed decorating/colouring amazing caterpillars and butterflies and other pictures from that story. We also had many of his other books which the parents enjoyed reading with their children.
