Pastor’s Letter Dear Friends, Hard to believe that Halloween is over. Thanksgiving and Christmas will be here be-fore we know it. Last month, we had the October Count, in which we count all the people who come to Sunday Mass. I thought you would be interested in some of the results: 1) The highest attended Mass is the 12 Noon at 541 people per Sunday 2) The least attended Mass is the 7:30am at 157 per Sunday

3) The 5:00pm Saturday Mass averaged 244 people, the 9am Sunday Mass averaged 365 people, and the 10:30am Mass averaged 271 people No surprise here, women far outnumber men coming to Sunday Mass and check this out, on average, the number of children coming to the 12 Noon Mass is 178, a little less than all the other Masses combined. My hope and my prayer is that we can get some of these 178 kids into our school next year. Thanksgiving will be here in two weeks. We will have one Mass that day at 10am. I couldn’t think of a better way to start your Thanksgiving Day than by coming to Mass and thanking God for all the many gifts He has given us during this past year. Please bring your bread and wine that you will use for your Thanksgiving Dinner to be blest after Communion. To be all inclusive, we will have a reading and song in Spanish. We will also take up a collection that day. It will be divided between the St. Vincent de Paul Society and the Helping Hands Christmas Outreach Program. Please plan on coming to this Mass. It is my favorite Mass of the year. Thank you for listening to my talk on the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal (AAA). As I told you in my talk, we still owe the Archdiocese $50,000. It either comes from your generosity or it comes from our savings of $400,000. To those of you who have already given, thank you from the bottom of my heart. For those of you who haven’t given, please consider giving. Every little bit helps.

Queridos amigos, Es difícil de creer que Halloween ha terminado. Acción de Gracias y Navidad estará aquí antes de que nos conocemos. THIS WEEK IN CONFIRMATION & YOUTH MINISTRY

Monday 11/17: Middle School Classes meet in the convent, 7-8:30. **There will be a meeting for all parents of “non-traditional” students on 11/17 @ 7:30pm in the Convent. You should attend this meeting if you have a middle/high school student who started our program later than 7th grade, or is preparing for Bap-tism or First Holy Communion. We look forward to seeing you at the convent. Thursday 11/20: High School Classes meet in the Convent at 7pm. There will be a meeting on Thursday, 12/4 for all of our 2015 Confirmation Sponsors from 7:30-8:30 in the convent. All teens receiving their Confirmation on May 9, 2015 must be represent-ed. If sponsors are unable to attend, a parent is asked to come in their place.

Mass Intentions: The tradition of Mass offer-ings has its roots early in the Church’s histo-ry. People would make an offering in memory of a loved one from their own treas-ury, usually an animal or from their harvest. These went to the support of the clergy or the community at large. Over time the offering came to be a monetary gift. Today we con-tinue this tradition. The monetary gift that has been suggested by our Archdiocese is a $10.00 stipend. Our Mass intention book for 2015 is open. We ask that you request no more than four intentions per family. As you are aware, we have only one week day Mass. We are able to have intentions offered for Sunday Masses at the 5pm, 7:30am and 9am Masses as well as the 12 Noon Spanish Mass. Intentions will be taken at the Rectory offices during normal operating hours. Thank You

2015 Mass Intention Book is Now Open

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION All Christians in both East and West embraced the care of the sick as essential to church life. In the West, the importance of the visit of the priest is stressed, while in the East, the sick person is brought to the church for a full Liturgy of the

Word. Some, such as the Armenians, even call it the “Ritual of the Lamp,” since the oil is poured out of the lamp by which the Word is read. This may be why East-ern Christians sometimes anoint the sick with this oil, since the trip to church might kill them. Our tradition in the West also unfolded in monaster-ies, where it was possible for infirm monks to be attend-ed with a full and beautifully consoling liturgy. In 950 the monks of St. Alban’s Abbey in Mainz produced a ceremonial book that was instantly a pastoral hit every-where. There were two lengthy rituals for the sick, one an extended vigil, and the other a liturgy of anointing that included Communion under both species. While this ritual was a house formula for monks, it is easy to see how monks who had the care of parishes desired to serve their parishioners in a similar way. The first form included the chanting of penitential psalms, and the sec-ond form required a confession beforehand. Both forms included a laying on of hands, which everyone under-stood as being an essential part of penance

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En 1682 unos negoci-antes encontraron una caja abandonada en una playa al sur de El Salvador. Como no pu-dieron abrirla decidieron llevársela al pueblito de San Mi-guel para conseguir con qué abrirla. Montaron la caja en un burrito y comenzaron su camino. Al pasar por la iglesia

parroquial, el burrito se sentó y la caja se abrió reve-lando una bella imagen de la Virgen. En aquel entonces el pueblo de El Salvador estaba divido por la guerra pero con la llegada de esta imagen milagrosa el pueblo buscó reconciliarse. En 1833 hubo otra guerra en El Salvador y los que salieron victoriosos prome eron a María no vengarse en contra de los perdedores. Por estos hechos se le concedió a la imagen el nombre Nues-tra Señora de la Paz. Su imagen de madera tallada y ves da lleva una palma en la mano recordando un milagro donde por la intercesión de la Virgen de la Paz, Dios salvó al pueblo de la explosion de un vol-cán. La palma recuerda que el humo que salía del volcán formaba una palma en el cielo.

Pope Francis' universal prayer intention for November is: “That all who suffer loneliness may experience the closeness of God and the support of others”. His intention for evangelisation is: “That young seminarians and religious may have wise and well-formed mentors”.

GET READY The Letters of Paul to the Thessalonians are among his earliest writings, and are driven by his belief and the be-lief of the entire early Christian community that

the return of Christ was imminent. Therefore, to devote time or attention to anything else was foolish. As time progressed, this fervor receded a bit. Today we may wonder, when we hear these readings about the coming end-times, if we should take them to heart. What should we do when we hear that the day of the Lord will come upon us “like a thief at night”? (1 Thes-salonians 5:2) Does this mean we are to stop our long-range goal-setting, get rid of our yearly calendars and planners, or stop putting money in the college education fund? Of course not. What it does mean is that we need to change our lives, living like children of the light and illuminating the world around us with the light of the gospel. Then, on that day, when the details of our daily living become unimportant, we will be ready to find our peace and security in Christ Jesus.

greso de Cristo era inminente, y por eso sería una tontería dar empo o atención a otras cosas. Con el pasar del empo, ese fervor comenzaba a disminuir un poco. Hoy día, cuando escuchamos es-tas lecturas sobre el fin del mundo, podemos pregun-tarnos si de veras creemos que Cristo va a venir entre nosotros como “un ladrón en la noche” (1 Tesalo-nicenses 5:2). Si la respuesta es “Sí”, ¿debemos, o no, dejar nuestra planificación a largo plazo, deshacernos de nuestros calendarios y agendas, y suspender los ahorros para la educación universitaria de nuestros hijos? Seguro que no. Pero, lo que sí quiere decir es que deberíamos cambiar nuestra vida y vivir como hijos de la luz e ilu-minar el mundo a nuestro alrededor con la luz del Evangelio. Entonces, en aquel día, cuando los detalles de nuestra ru na diaria ya no importen, estaremos listos para encontrar nuestra paz y seguridad en Cristo Jesús.
