Sunday, October 1, 2017 - Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

It is Coffee and Donuts Sunday this Sunday. All are welcome to stop down to the Marian Room for a coffee and a donut after each of the Sunday morning Masses.

As we are getting back into our fall schedule. Here a few things which might be helpful to you.

Just a reminder that the 8:15 a.m. Mass for the students in Our Lady of Victory Elementary School will be held on Mondays and Fridays this year (a change from last year’s Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday schedule for this Mass). Please note that it will only be celebrated on days on which school is in session. All are welcome to attend this Mass. Please refer to the bulletin for the schedule of these Masses.

Each Friday, beginning immediately after the 12:10 Mass, we begin Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. This Adoration time concludes with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at 5:00 p.m. Most often this is held in the Upper Basilica. Occasionally, when other things are scheduled in the main part of the church (or during times of construction), Exposition and Benediction will be held in the Lower Basilica Chapel. All are invited to spend some time in prayer in front of the Blessed Sacrament on Friday afternoons.

On Saturday, October 7, the Feast of Our Lady of Victory (also called Our Lady of the Rosary), we will celebrate our annual Feast Day Mass at 10:30 a.m. You may recall that this feast commemorates the 1571 Battel of Leponto, when the Christian Navy of Europe defeated the Turkish Navy near the Bay of Leponto, off the coast of Greece. Christians all over Europe had been praying the rosary for the Christian success of this battle. When the small Christian navy defeated the much larger Turkish navy, by the praying of the rosary, the feast was titled Our Lady of Victory/Our Lady of the Rosary. All are welcome to attend the Feast Day Mass at 10:30 a.m. that day. There will be a reception in the Baker Hall School following the Mass. All are welcome. Come and bring a friend. Happy Feast Day to all!

The parish feast day gives me an opportunity to thank all of the employees of the Our Lady of Victory Institutions for all they do to help continue the wonderful legacy of Father Baker. I am truly grateful to all of them for all they do to keep the spirit of Father Baker alive and well.

May Jesus bless you and may Our Lady of Victory watch over you.

Father Paul

Sacrament of Baptism: Our Parish offers a special Pre-Baptism preparation program for parents who desire to share their faith with their children. Parents-to-be must attend this class prior to the birth of their child. Baptisms are usually scheduled two times each month. Call the Rectory to register for classes. Godparents must be Confirmed and practicing Catholics. Non-parishioners are required to have a Letter of Recommendation to serve as a sponsor.

Sacrament of Marriage:

To be married in the Basilica, you must be an active parishioner for at least 9 months prior to setting a date. Engaged couples should contact the pastor before making other wedding arrangements. Couples are required to attend a Pre-Cana Conference, or equivalent pre-marriage preparation program.

Letters of Recommendation:

Recommendations to act as sponsors for Baptism or Confirmation can be issued only to registered members of Our Lady of Victory Parish who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation, attend Mass and receive Holy Communion regularly, have their children attending a Catholic school or Religious Education class. If married, the marriage must be in conformity with the regulations of the Catholic Church.

Devotions:

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament begins immediately after the 12:10 p.m. Mass in the Basilica on Fridays and concludes with Benediction at 5:00 p.m.

First Friday:

On the eve of the First Friday of each month there are confessions from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Mass is celebrated at 7:30 p.m. on First Friday.

Care of the Sick:

Please notify the rectory office for a visit to any family member who is sick, in the hospital or confined to home. Regular home Communion visits are usually on the First Friday of the month by a priest, deacon, or minister of the Eucharist.

Tours:

To schedule a tour of Our Lady of Victory Basilica, please contact Dianne Bosinski, Tours & Basilica Programs by email at [email protected] or by phone at (716) 828-9424.

Summary of the Readings

Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

In the stream of readings during this portion of Ordinary Time one week’s texts can often appear to pick up exactly where the previous week’s concluded. The sentiments expressed in today’s first reading seem to be a direct reaction to the Gospel passage we heard last week. In that Gospel, the landowner pays the same wages to his workers whether they worked for a full day or for only a few minutes. Today Ezekiel gives us the lament, “The LORD’s way is not fair!” (Ezekiel 18:25). These Sundays in Ordinary Time offer us a glimpse into the ways of the Lord. We see how God’s way has the tendency to turn the accepted conventions of the day upside down. Those who always expected that their way to heaven was guaranteed are disappointed. Those who thought they never had a chance are given that chance. Today offers us another opportunity to discover the abundance of God’s mercy and love. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

SUNDAY 10/01/17 OUR LADY OF VICTORY PAGE 3

We had a wonderful start to the new school year! Thank you to all of our faculty and staff for helping all of our families and students transition easily into their new classrooms.

Come take a look at our school. A new main floor was installed outside the school’s main office in August. We added new equipment in the classrooms and a coat of new paint in the Junior High Classrooms makes everything look bright and new. Our students now have access to a free breakfast and lunch program, new accelerated courses in Math and Science, along with Health courses in seventh and eighth grade. Our STREAM program is adding even more exciting classes for our students to become involved in throughout the year and our new Technology Integration teacher will work to support our teachers and encourage our students to use technology every day in the classroom. Thank you, Monsignor Burkard and all of our parishioners, for your support. Know that you are always welcome to come and see all the wonderful things going on at your parish school.

Bible Study to Resume

Our Bible Study program will resume on Monday, October 23, at 7:00 p.m. in the school cafeteria. The program will continue at that same time each Monday thereafter through November 20. In the session, we will examine the second half of a 10 part series presented by Dr. Brant Pitre entitled “Eucharist - Discovering the Mass in the Bible.” If you are new to the program, a $20.00 fee, payable on the first evening of the sessions, will be required to cover the cost of study materials and refreshments. We look forward to your participation, and all are welcome to attend.

Lectors Needed

Obligation: One Mass per month. Past lector or public speaking experience desirable. High school students who have been Confirmed are welcome. Please contact the Rectory office at 828-9444. Thank you.

Vocation Thought Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

One of the first things to realize when it comes to vocations is that we are part of something that is much greater than ourselves. We make a fatal error when we try to put ourselves at the center of things. Let us make every effort to reach beyond our selfishness and hear the voice of God more clearly. If God is calling you to a Church vocation, call Father Andrew Lauricella at 716-847-5535. Also, check out the “Priest of the

Month” stories on our website: www.buffalovocations.org!
