Page 2: OUR LADY OF VICTORY NATIONAL SHRINE AND BASILICA 6 2016 Bulletin.pdf · our St. Vincent de Paul Society for their work with the poor and ... Letters of Recommendation: Recommendations

This Sunday, feel free to stop down at the Marian Room for coffee and donuts after all of the Sunday morning Masses.

This weekend, at all the Masses, we will take up the annual collection for the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Catholic University is the only university in our country run by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops. It is my Alma Mater, having graduated from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences there in May of 1976. Please be as generous in this collection as you can. Use the special envelope in your packet for this collection.

Adult Bible Study begins this Monday, November 7, in the Our Lady of Victory Elementary School cafeteria. You may register at the door. The group will be studying great saints who have contributed to the life of the church.

Friday of this week is Veterans Day. On this day we stop to say thanks to all veterans of all wars who have fought to defend our country, and to pray for the safety of all women and men in uniform today who continue to keep our nation safe and secure. I will be praying for all of your relatives and friends who are vets – and for all of your loved ones serving in our Armed Forces on that day. A special word of thanks to all of the folks in our parish who have served our nation!

Next Sunday, November 13, we will have the ceremony for the closing of the Holy Door at the Noon Mass. This simple ceremony will bring to a conclusion the Jubilee Year of Mercy which we inaugurated last December. Join us for this beautiful closing ceremony.

Our annual Thanksgiving Day Family Mass will take place on Thursday, November 24, at 10:00 a.m. When you come to this Mass, bring a gift of non-perishable canned goods for the Food Procession. All donations made at this Mass will be given to our St. Vincent de Paul Society for their work with the poor and needy in the Lackawanna area.

May Jesus bless you and Our Lady of Victory watch over you.

Father Paul

Sacrament of Baptism: Our Parish offers a special Pre-Baptism preparation program for parents who desire to share their faith with their children. Parents-to-be must attend this class prior to the birth of their child. Baptisms are usually scheduled two times each month. Call the Rectory to register for classes. Godparents must be Confirmed and practicing Catholics. Non-parishioners are required to have a Letter of Recommendation to serve as a sponsor.

Sacrament of Marriage:

To be married in the Basilica, you must be an active parishioner for at least 9 months prior to setting a date. Engaged couples should contact the pastor before making other wedding arrangements. Couples are required to attend a Pre-Cana Conference, or equivalent pre-marriage preparation program.

Letters of Recommendation:

Recommendations to act as sponsors for Baptism or Confirmation can be issued only to registered members of Our Lady of Victory Parish who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation, attend Mass and receive Holy Communion regularly, have their children attending a Catholic school or Religious Education class. If married, the marriage must be in conformity with the regulations of the Catholic Church.

Devotions:

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament begins immediately after the 12:10 p.m. Mass in the Basilica on Fridays and concludes with Benediction at 5:00 p.m.

First Friday:

On the eve of the First Friday of each month there are confessions from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Mass is celebrated at 7:30 p.m. on First Friday.

Care of the Sick:

Please notify the rectory office for a visit to any family member who is sick, in the hospital or confined to home. Regular home Communion visits are usually on the First Friday of the month by a priest, deacon, or minister of the Eucharist.

Tours:

To schedule a tour of Our Lady of Victory Basilica, please contact Dianne Bosinski, Tours & Basilica Programs by email at [email protected] or by phone at (716) 828-9424.

Summary of the Readings Thirty-second Sunday

in Ordinary Time

The second book of Maccabees tells a powerful story, and a rather gruesome one at that. But central to it, beyond the horrible deaths inflicted upon the brothers and their mother, is their belief in the promise of resurrection and life everlasting in God.

Paul asks the Thessalonians to pray for him as he spreads Christ’s message of love, so that he might be delivered from other nonbelievers anxious to do him harm. The apostle is confident in such prayer, just as he is confident in the everlasting support of Jesus and God the Father.

And there’s that “everlasting” word again. The Sadducees, not buying the idea, ask Jesus an interesting—albeit meaningless—question about the status of married life at the Resurrection. He tells the non-believers that marriage isn’t an issue for the risen children of God. More importantly, he assures them that their ancestors do live on in God, even as evidenced by the Father’s words to Moses. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Each session will be held in the OLV School Cafeteria, and sessions will begin at 7:00 p.m. We will be reviewing a new series developed by Bishop Barron entitled “Pivotal Players.” This new series is an examination of the lives and contributions of various Saints, Mystics, Evangelists and Artists. Subjects include St. Francis, St. Thomas Aquinas, Bl. John Henry Newman, St. Catherine of Siena, G. K. Chesterton and Michelangelo. All are welcome to attend.

St. Vincent de Paul Society News

The OLV St. Vincent de Paul Society will be distributing food to the needy in our community for the Thanksgiving holiday. If you are interested in doing a little to make a big difference, please consider joining us...no experience is necessary! We could use help packing 200 bags of food on the morning of Friday, November 18, starting at 10:00 a.m. On Saturday, November 19, we could use people/families willing to drive their cars to deliver those bags to Lackawanna homes at starting times spaced out between 10:00 a.m. and noon. For more information, call the rectory at 828-9444 to leave a message for the St. Vincent de Paul Society and a member will call you back.

You can also help your neighbors by placing non-perishable food (especially a protein such as peanut butter or tuna) in the bins at the entrances to the church. We can also use the “paper in plastic bags” you get from the supermarket. Thank you.

The Traveling Chalice

Would you like to host the “Traveling Chalice” in your home to promote vocations to the priesthood and religious life?

Father Sam invites families with school-aged (including college-aged) children still living at home, to bring his personal chalice home for a week to help promote vocations through brief prayer each evening with your family.

The week begins with the presentation of the chalice at the end of a Saturday evening or Sunday Mass, and may be concluded with Father Sam celebrating a Mass in your home on the following Friday evening. Please contact Father Sam at the rectory at 716-828-9428 or [email protected] for more information or to sign –up.

Vocation Thought

We are blessed by Christ’s assurance of life after death. This good news is worth spreading! Let us then pray for an increase in vocations to priesthood and religious life. If God is calling you to a Church vocation, call Father Andrew Lauricella at 716-847-5535. Check out the “Priest of the Month” stories at: www.buffalovocations.org.
