A Message from Father Paul

This Sunday evening, at 7:00 p.m., we will host a concert by the famous Notre Dame University Bell Choir. It is a free concert, open to the public. This group has performed all over the world. We are fortunate to have them here at Our Lady of Victory. They have offered to take up a free will offering, the proceeds from which they will donate to Baker Victory Services, for use with the children under BVS’s care. Come and invite your family and friends to join you. It promises to be a very fine concert.

This Monday evening, March 12, we will celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time for some of the children of our parish. First Penance is always a time for the parish to enter into prayer for these children and for their catechists who have helped to prepare them for this sacrament. There will be 34 children receiving the sacrament on Monday evening at 6:30 p.m. I am grateful to Carm Zomeri, our Director of Religious Education, for her leadership in our sacramental preparation programs and to the parents of these children and the religious education teachers who helped them get ready to receive this sacrament.

Just a reminder that each Friday during Lent we pray the Stations of the Cross at 7:00 p.m. in the Basilica, followed by Mass at 7:30 p.m. This is a great way to enter into the spirit of Lent. Join us as we take part in these prayers and Masses.

Also, a reminder that on every Friday of the year, we hold Eucharistic Adoration immediately after the 12:10 Friday noontime Mass, concluding with Benediction at 5:00 p.m. Most often, this is in the upper Basilica. Occasionally, when other ceremonies are scheduled for the upper Basilica during this time, Adoration is moved to the lower Basilica Chapel. This is a great way to spend some time in peaceful prayer before the Blessed Sacrament.

On Saturday, March 17, we will host the annual St. Patrick’s Day Mass and Parade. The Mass is at 12:10 p.m. (as usual), followed by the World’s Shortest Parade – from the front steps of the Basilica to the flag poles next to Lackawanna City Hall. All folks of Irish descent (and all who wish they were) are invited to attend Mass and join in the parade. I’ll see you there.

If you have not already, pick up one of the Lent/Holy Week/Easter prayer cards in the Basilica, which contains the schedule of Masses and confessions for the remainder of Lent and through Holy Week and Easter. Place it somewhere in your home where all can refer to it for the dates and times of Masses and confessions as we prepare to celebrate Easter, the most important feast in our church calendar.

The last two Lenten Reflection evenings, sponsored by the Lay Vicariate Council of Southern Erie County will take place at Nativity Church, Orchard Park, on Sunday, March 11, and Sunday, March 18, at 7:00 p.m. On March 11, Father Michael LaMarca, from St. John Paul II parish, Lake View, will speak on “How Pope Francis Helps Us To Celebrate Lent” and on Sunday, March 18, Msgr. Richard Siepka, Spiritual Director at Christ the King Seminary will speak on “The Passion of Jesus in the Gospel of St. Mark.” Join parishioners from the other parishes in our Vicariate for these reflections. They are free, open to the public, and will be followed by a reception each evening.

May Jesus, our Savior bless you and may Our Lady of Victory watch over you.

Father Paul

Pray for the canonization of our founder, Venerable Nelson Baker

Sacrament of Baptism: Our Parish offers a special Pre-Baptism preparation program for parents who desire to share their faith with their children. Parents-to-be must attend this class prior to the birth of their child. Baptisms are usually scheduled two times each month. Call the Rectory to register for classes. Godparents must be Confirmed and practicing Catholics. Non-parishioners are required to have a Letter of Recommendation to serve as a sponsor.

Sacrament of Marriage:

To be married in the Basilica, you must be an active parishioner for at least 9 months prior to setting a date. Engaged couples should contact the pastor before making other wedding arrangements. Couples are required to attend a Pre-Cana Conference, or equivalent pre-marriage preparation program.

Letters of Recommendation:

Recommendations to act as sponsors for Baptism or Confirmation can be issued only to registered members of Our Lady of Victory Parish who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation, attend Mass and receive Holy Communion regularly, have their children attending a Catholic school or Religious Education class. If married, the marriage must be in conformity with the regulations of the Catholic Church.

Devotions:

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament begins immediately after the 12:10 p.m. Mass in the Basilica on Fridays and concludes with Benediction at 5:00 p.m.

First Friday:

On the eve of the First Friday of each month there are confessions from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Mass is celebrated at 7:30 p.m. on First Friday.

Care of the Sick:

Please notify the rectory office for a visit to any family member who is sick, in the hospital or confined to home. Regular home Communion visits are usually on the First Friday of the month by a priest, deacon, or minister of the Eucharist.

Tours:

To schedule a tour of Our Lady of Victory Basilica, please contact Dianne Bosinski, Tours & Basilica Programs by email at [email protected] or by phone at (716) 828-9424.

Summary of the Readings Fourth Sunday of Lent

The people of God forgot the covenant and flouted God’s laws. They did not listen to the prophets among them, who spoke for God in warning them. Prophets are sent from God to remind us why we are here, but they are often, even in our own time, mocked, disregarded, and mistreated rather than thanked and listened to.

The book of Chronicles tells the results of these sins: the destruction of the temple and all of Jerusalem, murder, mayhem, and finally exile to a foreign land. Why are these stories in the Bible? Just to inform us of what happened to our ancient forebears? What good would that be unless there were a message and a warning for us as well? Are we people who follow the teachings of God, who obey the words of Christ in the second covenant in his blood? Or do we continue to wreak works of darkness and violence? We are reminded by these readings that we will be judged as a people, not just as individuals. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
