—A Message from the Pastor—

SUNDAY 03/29/20 OUR LADY OF VICTORY PAGE 2

My dear sisters and brothers in Christ, I want to assure you that, during these very difficult and challenging times, you are being remembered in my daily Masses and prayers. Every day, Fr. Paul, Fr. Romulus, and Fr. Justin join me in concelebrating a Private Mass here at Our Lady of Victory for the announced Mass intentions posted in the weekly bulletin, as well as special intentions offered for all of our parishioners and loved ones for your safety, good health and well-being during this coronavirus pandemic. We are doing everything possible to keep our parishioners, employees and visitors safe here at Our Lady of Victory and we are trying to do our best to keep us all spiritually connected during this time of no Public Masses or gatherings. The health and well-being of our community is our primary concern. Once again this week, I will celebrate the Mass for the Fifth Sunday of Lent and it will be posted on our OLV website and social platforms. Please join me in prayer and in offering a “Spiritual Communion” until we can all be together again at Mass. I also want to express my deepest gratitude and appreciation to our registered parishioners who are mailing in their weekly offertory envelopes to the rectory. If you have not done so, I strongly encourage you to do so. This is our Basilica parish and, even though we cannot gather for public Masses, we still need to pay all of the bills to maintain the day-to-day operations of the Basilica, as well as to provide for parish ministries and our employees. I know these are extremely challenging times, especially for those who are unemployed at this time. We do rely on your generosity to keep everything going, both now and for our future here at OLV. Also, in regards to the Catholic Charities Appeal 2020, thank you to everyone who has contributed thus far by mailing in your contribution. To date we have raised $32,864.33. We still need to raise $58,135.67 to meet our Parish Goal of $91,000.00. You will see in this bulletin an information sheet on what Catholic Charites provides in our Lackawanna community. This year, more than ever, Catholic Charities needs our support to provide for all the people who will fall through the cracks during and after the coronavirus pandemic. Every donation makes a difference, large and small. We are in great need of new donors. Please consider a one-time gift or a pledge. I personally pledge every year because I can make a larger donation and pay it in pledge payments throughout the year. For more information on how to contribute to Catholic Charities, please call the rectory or go to www.ccwny.org. If you donate online, please make sure to identify yourself as a parishioner and your donation will be credited to our Parish Goal.

As we spend these days at home and keeping our “social distance,” I am sure that many are feeling isolated and somewhat anxious about what the present and future holds. All the more reason to keep ourselves grounded in the love of God and God’s providential care for us. In the words of St. Paul to the Romans: “We know that all things work for good for those who love God… If God is for us, who can be against us… For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8) It is imperative that we keep connected by phone, skype and social media with our family, friends and neighbors, especially those who live alone. I encourage you to pray with each other over the phone and in your own homes. Here are some spiritual resources to assist you:

It appears the restrictions for Public Mass and large gatherings will still be in place for Palm Sunday and Holy Week. If that is the case, we will be taping the Masses and Services for Palm Sunday and Holy Week and will post them on our website (olvbasilica.org) and other social media platforms. The Blessed Palms will be available for pickup on Palm Sunday at the entrances to the Basilica during the hours that we are open for private prayer from 6:30 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. I know this is all very difficult for everyone. I will keep you posted. Please let us do as Father Baker would do—entrust our lives through the powerful intercession of Our Lady of Victory as we pray fervently for the end of the coronavirus pandemic. Please continue to limit your social interaction for the protection, health and well-being of everyone you come in contact with. Be assured of my ongoing prayers for you and your loved ones.

—Fr. David

Sacrament of Baptism:

Our Parish offers a special Pre-Baptism preparation program for parents who desire to share their faith with their children. Parents-to-be must attend this class prior to the birth of their child. Baptisms are usually scheduled two times each month. Call the Rectory to register for classes. Godparents must be Confirmed and practicing Catholics. Non-parishioners are required to have a Letter of Recommendation to serve as a sponsor.

Sacrament of Marriage:

To be married in the Basilica, you must be an active parishioner for at least 9 months prior to setting a date. Engaged couples should contact the pastor before making other wedding arrangements. Couples are required to attend a Pre-Cana Conference, or equivalent pre-marriage preparation program.

Letters of Recommendation:

Recommendations to act as sponsors for Baptism or Confirmation can be issued only to registered members of Our Lady of Victory Parish who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation, attend Mass and receive Holy Communion regularly, and have their children attending a Catholic school or Religious Education class. If married, the marriage must be in conformity with the regulations of the Catholic Church.

Care of the Sick:

Please notify the rectory office for a visit to any family member who is sick, in the hospital or confined to home. Regular home Communion visits are usually on the First Friday of the month by a priest, deacon, or minister of the Eucharist.

Devotions:

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament begins immediately after the 12:10 p.m. Mass in the Basilica on Fridays and concludes with Benediction at 5:00 p.m.

First Friday:

On the eve of the First Friday of each month, there are confessions from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Mass is celebrated at 7:30 p.m. on First Friday.

Tours:

To schedule a tour of OLV Basilica, please contact Dianne Bosinski, Tours & Basilica Programs by email ([email protected]) or phone (716-828-9424).

Weekly Offerings

In order to continue to care for the ongoing maintenance of our beautiful Basilica and to provide for the ministries of our parish, we depend on everyone mailing in their weekly offertory during this time when Masses are suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Please mail your contributions to the OLV Rectory Office at:

767 Ridge Road Lackawanna, NY 14218

We are deeply grateful to your dedicated

commitment to Our Lady of Victory National Shrine and Basilica. Thank you!

On the Fifth Sunday of Lent, just before we begin to enter Holy Week, we are summoned to Bethany. If we had been friends of Mary, Lazarus, and Martha, and found out that Lazarus was gravely ill, we probably would have dropped everything to be with them. This was what was so surprising about the behavior of Jesus. Although he was their close friend, he chose to stay away, that God’s glory would be manifested.

This is a persistent theme in John’s Gospel. Right to the very end, Jesus’ works were meant to give glory to the Father. As our Lenten journey reaches a crescendo, let us be mindful that, as people who have “put on Christ” in baptism, we are also called, by our attitudes and actions, to give glory to God.
