Pastor’s Corner

My Dear Friends,

This weekend, we welcome all the

people who will be celebrating the

Pre-Encuentro Familiar at the

Basilica Shrine of St. Mary. This

event, going from 8-5 on

Saturday, will feature Fr. Chesco

Javier García, Parochial Vicar of

Sacred Heart Cathedral in

Raleigh, Mar Múñoz-Visosa, Executive Director of Cultural

Diversity of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, and

Andrés Arango, National Coordinator of the Catholic Charismatic

Renewal for the United States and Canada.

On October 25th, Mr. Gerard Hall from the Diocese of Raleigh will

visit the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary to give an informational talk

on what it means to be a basilica and the symbols and honors

associated with it.

From the time I came to St. Mary parish, I have encountered many

visitors who ask me the same question: “Where is the crucifix?”

Actually, we do have a crucifix. Unfortunately, however, it is

basically invisible unless one if looking for it. Not only is it much

too small, it is gold in color which makes it blend into the gold and

cream-colored marble that is behind it.

Therefore, we are seeking to remedy this by constructing a 5-foot

crucifix that will be above the tabernacle. A wood artist in our

community is devoting her talents to this project. The corpus for

the cross will be purchased. The Bishop of Raleigh has seen our

sketches, and he loves it and has given his blessing. I’ll keep you

posted on the progress of this sanctuary addition.

The Feast of the Assumption is right around the corner. Here at the

Basilica Shrine of St. Mary, we will have 4 Masses for the feast.

On August 14th, we will have a 5:30 p.m. Mass in English. On

August 15th, we will have a 7:30 a.m. Mass in English, a 12:10 p.m.

Mass in English, and a 7 p.m. Mass in Spanish. On August 14th, at

7:30 a.m., we will have a regular weekday Mass in honor of St.

Maximillian Kolbe, a priest who was martyred in the Nazi

concentration camps.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Father Bob

Parish Happenings

“A Stitch….A Prayer….The Touch of God” Our Prayer Shawl ministry offers warmth and the message of God’s blessings to those in need of comfort. Members of this ministry knit and crochet special shawls and blankets that receive a pastoral blessing. These hand-made items are made available to anyone experiencing a physical or emotional crisis. Some Prayer Shawl Ministry members do their knitting and crocheting at regular meet-ings (10:00am on the 2nd & 4th Tuesdays each month) others prefer to work exclusively from home. Call Noreen at 798-0055 for more information on this wonderful ministry. If you know of anyone who needs the warmth and comfort of a prayer shawl, call Noreen and she will make arrangements to get one to you. Again, you or the recipient need not be a member of our congregation.

St. Mary Nursery News

The parish nursery could use some more volunteers. The nursery is

available during the 9:30 a.m. mass on Sundays. On average the volun-

teers are only in the nursery one Sunday a month. If you are interested

please contact Michelle Timmons at [email protected].

For the past several years I have used the Sundays in August to report on

the happenings of St. Mary’s Parish Social Outreach from July 1, to June

30th. This gives me an opportunity to bring to the attention of those who

read my articles of the very good things you have been a part of as the

community cares for our brothers and sisters in need. Your prayers,

financial contributions and the giving of your time and talent have touched

the lives of thousands of households.

Today’s Gospel is so perfect for this reflection. Jesus takes a few fish and

some bread and multiplies them, feeding five thousand men, “not counting

women and children”. (That’s an interesting phrase isn’t it?)

In a very real sense this is what happens at the Ministry Mondays through

Thursdays. Our Food Distribution program is one the largest of our

various ministries and it will take two articles to do justice to it.

Where does the Food come from? Your contributions of a food item on

Share Sunday, the first Sunday of the month, along with the children’s

donations at their weekly Mass, are added to the following sources:

Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC – On the first Tuesday of

each month, several volunteers help us pick up at the Food Bank on

Marstellar St. about 2-3,000lbs of food. Canned items make up the

majority of the delivery, but there is also some frozen meat and fruit.

The men bring it to the Outreach and it is brought down the stairs,

unpacked and shelved in order to be ready for distribution the next

day. This is very hard work and truly appreciated. It takes about 2

hours.

Tuesday pick up at Food Bank – Each Tuesday a volunteer shops at

the Food Bank, purchasing food, meat, dry goods etc. at 18 cents a

pound. The funds used to purchase this food comes from the

donations that the Knights of Columbus receive when they hold a

food drive for us.

Knights of Columbus Food Drives – For many years the Knights

of Columbus have organized about 10 drives a year for the benefit of

our Food Pantry. This past year they received 3080 bags of donated

food, and $5390 cash to purchase food. The Ministry is most grateful

to the Knights for their giving of their time to beg for food.

Diabetic Pantry – A grant from the Cape Fear Foundation is used to

purchase diabetic food that is distributed to 30+ diabetics each month.

Homeless Food Pantry – The Presbyterian community, for the past

several years, has donated funds for this Outreach. Each month we

purchase nutritious food and snacks for our homeless.

Sandwiches – We are blessed by 3 families preparing lunches

(sandwich, fruit, snack and water) for 35 guests Monday, Tuesday

and Wednesday.

As we reflect on our readings today, let us ask ourselves, “What food am

I offering so that others can be nourished spiritually as well as

physically?

Special Need of the Week

We will be closed for the entire month of August and will reopen Sep-

tember 8th. We are not able to receive any donations during this time

and we really need your cooperation with this, as bags and boxes will

block the entrance to the building during construction.

Carolina Catholic interviews the hermit priest of North Carolina For our two August shows, Carolina Catholic went into the mountains of North Carolina to interview Father George David Byers, a priest living as a hermit in the mountains of Transylvania County in the Diocese of Charlotte. With Bishop Jugis’ permission, Father George lives in the mountains at his Holy Souls Her-mitage where he prays for priests, writes, and assists rural parishes on week-ends. In our first show, we will be learning about this priest, his 20 years in Rome, and his four years as a hermit. In our second show, we will be discussing his thesis and writings on Genesis 2 & 3 where he discusses his scientific and theological study of the Bible on the topic of original sin. These two shows in August can be heard on Wilmington Catholic Radio on 93.1 FM Saturdays at 11 a.m. and Sundays at 6 p.m. That's Saturday, August 9th for the first show and Saturday, August 16th and 23rd for the second show, and Sun-day, August 3rd and 10th for the first show and Sunday, August 17th and 24th for

the second show.

This show can also be heard on our website at www.wilmingtoncatholicradio.com

Diocese of Raleigh Response to the

Unaccompanied Children Humanitarian Crisis

Many children are coming to the United States, specifically Texas, seeking family members

who previously immigrated to this country. This has been extensively reported in various me-

dia. Below is an initial overview of the situation, how the Catholic Diocese of Raleigh is re-

sponding, and what the faithful can do to support the teachings of our Catholic Faith.

Overview of the Current Situation - - Unaccompanied children from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras are migrating to the United

States in record numbers. While not a new phenomenon, the number of children who are making this perilous journey has increased ex-

ponentially, upwards of 90,000 children are projected to arrive between October 2013 and September 20141. A delegation of the United

States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) traveled to Central America in November 2013 and reported that multiple interrelated

factors are contributing to the increase in child migration. Some of these factors include: a lack of strong social institutions and civil soci-

ety support, violence and family separation, lack of viable economic and educational opportunities, and environmental factors affecting

crop production. The delegation also reported that “one overriding factor has played a decisive and forceful role in recent years: general-

ized violence at the state and local levels and a corresponding breakdown of the rule of law have threatened citizen security and created a

culture of fear and hopelessness.”2

How Our Catholic Teaching Calls Us to Respond - - The sanctity of the family and the need to protect the vulnerable are integral elements of

our Catholic approach to service and pastoral care in the United States. There are three basic principles of Catholic Social Teaching on

immigration:

People have the right to migrate to sustain their lives and the lives of their families.

A country has the right to regulate its borders and to control immigration.

A country must regulate its borders with justice and mercy.

A country's regulation of borders and control of immigration must be governed by concern for all people and with mercy and justice. A

nation may not simply decide that it wants to provide for its own people and no others. A sincere commitment to the needs of all must

prevail. (Source: http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/human-life-and-dignity/immigration/catholic-teaching-on-immigration-and-the

Family Reunification, Care of Children and Immigration Issues

Reunification and Care of Children: The USCCB’s department of Migration and Refugee Services (MRS) provides community-

based services to support the reunification of unaccompanied children with family members in the U.S. Catholic Charities of the Diocese

of Raleigh contracts with MRS to ensure children are housed with families of relatives who can care for them. Temporary mass housing

facilities are provided for these children by the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement and are located in other states. (There are current-

ly no foster care situations which are licensed within the State of North Carolina for these children.) Additionally, Catholic Charities is

helping parents find unaccompanied children who have come to the U.S. to live in safety with their family.

Legal Immigration Issues: Catholic Charities and local partners are responding to the legitimate immigration claims of these chil-

dren and their families through our network of Immigration Specialists. Read a description of the services through which Catholic Chari-

ties is meeting some needs of these children and families: www.catholiccharitiesraleigh.org/immigration-assistance

How You Can Help

Pray: For our country; For those providing care for these unaccompanied children; For the countries of Guatemala, Honduras and El

Salvador- that leaders there can create a safe and prosperous environment for their citizens, especially their children.

If you choose, support the work of USCCB/MRS by donating to The National Catholic Fund for Migration and Refugee Services:

http://www.usccb.org/catholic-giving/opportunities-for-giving/migration-and-refugee-services/national-catholic-campaign-for-

migration-and-refugee-services.cfm.

If you choose, support Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Raleigh with a designated donation to expand its ability to provide legal

immigration services and care services for these children and their families: http://www.catholiccharitiesraleigh.org/how-to-

contribute

If you choose, join the Justice for Immigrants Campaign (http://www.justiceforimmigrants.org/index.shtml) and support Comprehen-

sive Immigration Reform legislation.

Contact Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Raleigh regarding opportunities to help at the local level.
