Pastor’s Corner My Dear Friends, This weekend, Catholic Christians celebrate the Third Sunday of Easter.
In today’s Gospel selection from St. Luke (24: 35-48), we hear the story of what has become known as the “Emmaus journey.” In the story, the risen Jesus suddenly begins walking with two of his disciples. At first, they thought they were seeing a ghost, but Jesus assured them he was the risen Jesus. Then, Jesus began engaging in Bible Studies, showing them how the Scripture – which was only the Old Testament at that time – referred to him. On another note, I’m delighted to report that our parish has surpassed our Bishop’s Annual Appeal (BAA) goal. All the money we have raised over our goal will be for our own parish projects. Krispy Kreme Doughnut Sale You won't have to wait until National Doughnut Day (the first Friday in June) to enjoy a delicious Krispy Kreme doughnut. Catholic Daughters of the Americas (CDA), Court 1036-Wilmington, will sell boxes of doughnuts after all masses (while supplies last) on Sunday, April 29. The cost of a box of 12 is $8.00.

We have been busy making the final preparations to facilitate the change to our service hours. As of tomorrow, April 16th, we will have two shifts. Volunteers will be working 8:30 am to 11:30 am receiving donations, sorting clothes, stocking shelves, handling administrative tasks, van pickups and deliveries. We will re-open at 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm to serve our guests. Please note we cannot receive donations during the second shift. Please keep us in your prayers as we make this challenging transition.

Fr. Gustavo in Truck Because our sister parish is the most far-flung parish in the Archdio-cese of Tegucigalpa with its 87 churches, a large part of priestly min-istry is spent traveling on the unpaved mountain “roads” of the parish. Some churches take 6 hours (1-way) to get to, and not all are accessi-ble by vehicle. Because of the rough terrain, a good pickup truck is an absolute necessity, and the priests need to replace a full set of tires every 6 months! Here we see Fr. Gustavo, pastor of our sister parish – San Francisco de Asís – in his truck.
We have exceeded our goal in pledges for the 2018 BAA! Thank you for your generous support!

Columbarium and Memorial Garden
We have received word that construction will begin on the Columbarium and Me-morial Garden on May 1st. The first phase will consist of 240 niches and 80 have been purchased so far. We will host sessions at 10:00 am on Thursday, April

Carolina Catholic learns about martyrs for our faith For our first show in April, Carolina Catholic chats with Father Fessio, president and founder of Ignatius Press, about one of its newest releases, Blessed Jerzy Popieluszko: Truth versus Totalitarianism. Father Jerzy was the Catholic chaplain for Solidarity who bravely preached on the truth of the Catholic faith, so that Poles could be free to worship God again, and who was brutally murdered in 1984 by three agents of the Security Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to silence his voice. We will also chat with Daniel Rabourdin who produced and directed The Hidden Rebellion, a docu-film about one of the world’s first genocides, the slaughter of the noble Catholics of the Vendee region of France dur-ing the French Revolution. This docu-film gives an eye-opening picture of this first progressive genocide done in the name of "social justice." David Miller Ordained Deacon St. Mary parishioner David Miller was ordained to the (transitional) diaconate on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral. He celebrated his first Mass as a deacon at the 11:00 am Mass on Sunday, April 8,
2018 at the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary. Following the Mass, there was a reception in the St. Mary School Cafeteria. It was at the 11:00 am Mass that David served as an usher before entering the seminary. Hopefully, the bishop will ordain David as a priest next year. Congratulations to Deacon David!
St. Mary School gala is less than 2 months away, and we need your help and generosity. The gala theme this year is “S.S. Mary Cruise” – on May 12th, we will transform The Upper Room into a cruise ship for the night, complete with casino games, live music, dancing, an all-you-can-eat buffet, dessert bar, silent auction and more. The funds raised from the gala will go toward upgrading both playgrounds – the pre-school playground and the hope-to-soon-not-be-sandy playground. This comes by popular request from parents and students alike. We have requested a design and estimate of the proposed playground, and are hoping to have something to share with you soon. If we can raise enough money, our goal would be to have it ready for the new school year. We are planning a fun evening and are hoping for a huge turnout. Over and above fundraising goals, we want this to be a fun evening for par-ents to connect with old friends and meet new ones. Aside from its stellar academics, St. Mary is known for its strong sense of communi-ty; the gala has always been a great way to get everyone together. There are several ways to help: (1) Volunteer, (2) Corporate/Family Sponsorship, (3) Feature Sponsorship, (4) Silent Auction Donation, (5) Purchase tickets. Matthew 5:16 I hope that you all enjoyed quality family time during the Easter break as we return to school after celebrating our Risen Lord. This week-end we will be sharing our city with thousands of visitors to the annual Azalea Festival. Paid parking will be provided at St. Mary to benefit
the church’s youth groups. I enjoyed a wonderful trip to Holland and Belgium with a friend from the days when we were grade parents together in Catholic school. Those valued friendships between students can last a lifetime as well as those of the parents. It was a wonderful adventure of learning, tulips, and windmills. Most moving was the opportunity to visit the Anne Frank House and the Museum Church of Our Lord in the Attic, both in Amster-dam. Unfortunately, I returned with flu symptoms. During the week before our break, Mrs. Linn was out the entire week with the flu, as well as Ms. Marren, our business manager. They were followed by Mrs. Fischer, Mrs. Caldropoli, and Mrs. Watts, all who had covered the office during portions of that week. However our staff is fully capable and trained to handle the school in our absence and I was in touch with Mrs. Linn each day. During this year’s flu season, I feel fortunate that we did not need to close our school as many schools did across the nation. Local History - I’m sure that many of you watched or read about the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Commemoration held this week at Williston Middle School. Our middle school students took part in the Essay Contest under
the direction of Mrs. Stabile, middle school language arts teacher. St. Patrick’s Day Golf Classic – On the same day as the parade, the 6th St. Mary School Golf Classic took place at Compass Pointe in Leland. The proceeds from these golf clas-sics have supported numerous improvements to our vintage gym. Great thanks and appreciation go to Mr. Tony Viollis, athletic director, and Mr. Tom Kennedy, coach and parent of Olivia who graduated last year, for chairing this event again. Thanks also to Mrs. Daley for her assistance with this project. We thank the many parents, both past and present, who volunteered their time to make this event a success. We also want to thank the parents and students, both past and present, who played in the tournament. It was a perfect weather day for a spirited event supporting our school. Proceeds will be reported soon. Freshly painted steps – Thanks to Mr. Viollis and Mr. Kennedy for painting the gym steps during our break. Athletic Banquet: On Thursday, May 31, 2018 the Athletic Awards Banquet will be held in the Upper Room. In the past we have had dinner, during which time our coaches presented our fine athletes with a partici-pation medal or pin for the year or years of being on a team. A planning meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 17, at 6:00 pm in the gym to form the committees that will make this wonderful evening another suc-cess. Fall Volleyball and Coed Cross Country: I will be sending out a sheet to our rising 4th through 8th graders to see who would be interested in participating on our Girls’ Volleyball or Tennis Team and our Coed
Cross Country Team. When you sign up, please include your name, email address, and telephone number so the coaches can contact you over the summer. Coaches Needed: We are looking for a Girls’ Volleyball Coach for the fall and a Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball coach for our winter season. If you can hold practice after school 2 days a week, attend games 2 days a week, and would like to talk about these positions, get in touch with me. All of the positions are on a volunteer basis. Golf Outing: I would like to thank everyone who helped or participated in our Annual Golf Classic on St. Patrick’s Day.
