Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 26th, 2020
The Church has, for thousands of years, set aside this period of time to prepare Her people for the central celebration of our faith---the Resurrection of Jesus, Easter Sunday, April 12th. We encourage all to enter this marvelous season of grace with a spirit of renewal and recommitment to follow Jesus and proclaim the Gospel. To this end, we invite everyone to join us for the various Masses and services we have planned for Lent.
Distribution of Ashes on Ash Wednesday - 9:00am, 12:00 noon, and 7:30pm Masses Service of the Word at 4:00pm Ashes will be distributed at all Masses and at the Service of the Word.
Celebration of the Eucharist - Daily - Monday-Friday at 9:00am, Sunday- 5:00pm (Sat.), 8:00am, 10:00am and 12:00 noon
First Fridays in Lent - March 6 and April 3- In addition to the 9am daily Mass, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will follow the 9am Mass and conclude with Benediction at 10:30am.
Recitation of the Rosary - Thursdays in Lent at 7:00pm in the Church - The Rosary provides an opportunity for meditation on the life of Christ. Join us. Stations of the Cross - Friday evenings in Lent at 7:00pm in the Church
Parish Mission in Lent: “The Healing Ministry of Jesus in the Gospels”
Monday, March 23rd at 7:30pm – Sr. Laura of Mount St. Francis
Tuesday, March 24th at 7:30pm – Fr. Antony Sorgie, Pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish in Tuckahoe
Monday and Tuesday evening will include Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament with song provided by the choir.
Wednesday, March 25th at 7:30pm – Mass of Healing with the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick – Fr. DeBellis will be the Celebrant.
RCIA--Praying for those preparing to receive the Sacraments at Easter - The RCIA candidates will begin their final preparation on the First Sunday of Lent with the ceremony of the “Rite of Election”. At this rite, upon the testimony of sponsors and catechists, the candidates affirm their intention to join the Church. In the presence of the bishop (or his delegate), they inscribe their names in the Book of the Elect as a pledge of fidelity. This Lent, let us remember to pray for them and offer some sacrifice on their behalf. The Lord will in turn bless us.
**Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. **The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat.
Page Three
Lenten Obligations Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday (February 26th) and Good Friday (April 10th). In addition, all Catholics 14 years old and older must abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. The U. S. bishops define fasting as eating one full meal. Some food (not equaling another full meal) is permitted as necessary to maintain strength.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS On days when the weather is inclement, please listen to WHUD 100.7 FM for announcements on cancellations. Cancellations are also posted on-line on the WHUD storm center. You can also check the outgoing message on the Religious Education voicemail. The Religious Ed phone number is (914) 734-9243. Generally, because Holy Spirit falls within the boundaries of the Lakeland Central School District, when Lakeland is closed or cancels afterschool activities, Religious Ed classes are cancelled.
If you would like prayers for a family member who is ill or recently deceased, please call the Parish Office. The ill are prayed for during the weekend Masses for two weeks (their name will be announced during Mass). After that, names remain on the prayer list in our bulletin for four weeks. The recently deceased are prayed for during the weekend Masses and added to the list in our bulletin for an additional week. If you wish to have a name remain on the prayer list longer, please send a note or call the Parish Office. Thank you.
Stand in the Light during Lent Imagine looking up to the sky and seeing the sun, so powerful and bright that great beams break through any gray to touch the earth. Everything that was dark is now light and all that was cold feels warmth. Jesus is like that sun. His glory shines rays of hope on each of us, warming us with the strength of his love. During Lent this year, why not remove anything in your life that keeps you from standing in his light? Refresh your sight. Eliminate whatever bad habits keep you from seeing Christ’s light. Let Lent be a new beginning to your lifelong journey down the right path. Refresh your faith. Find your way to the light. Recommit to the promises made at Baptism and Confirmation. (You can find them at the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ website: www.usccb.org.) Sunday Mass can help you stay on track. Refresh your soul. Clear your way to the light by receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Jesus is ready to forgive us if we ask. - Growing in Faith
