100% Design – A NewStart for London’sLargest and MostPrestigious DesignEvent in the UK

Earls Court 19-22 September 2012

100% Design is the UK’s most visited

contemporary design event. Entering its 18th

year in 2012 it is set to reinforce its position

of influence by delivering the most successful

edition of the show staged to date.

Last year’s event attracted over 18,000

visitors. This year, with former Deputy

Director of the London Design Festival

William Knight at the helm, a new layout and

a broad spectrum of new talent, fresh ideas

and innovative design, 100% Design 2012

will again be the essential event for the

industry diary.

Orangebox winsFurniture Makers’Sustainability Award 2012

The Worshipful Company of Furniture

Makers is delighted to announce that the

Sustainability Award for 2012 (a new award

this year) has been won by the office

furniture manufacturer Orangebox.

Open to all full members of the Furniture

Industry Sustainability Programme (FISP),

the award recognises the best contribution to

sustainable furniture manufacturing in

Britain.

Orangebox’s commitment to improving

sustainable manufacturing standards was

felt to provide a truly inspirational example.

Environmental issues are taken into

consideration right from the start of the

product development process. Raw

material usage is minimised by design

analysis. End of ‘first life’ considerations

are built in from the start when selecting

materials and allowing easy disassembly.

It was a night to remember for Combilift

at this year’s UK FLTA Awards for

Excellence. Not only did the company

win the Innovation Category for the

second time, for its new Rough Terrain

RT forklift, but its Combi-CB model also

scooped the first and only “Victor

Ludorum“ prize, billed by the FLTA as

the ultimate winner of winners in the

awards’ 18-year history.

The Victor Ludorum was a special one-off

award chosen from every winning entry in all

previous awards in the Environment,

Ergonomics, Safety and Innovation

categories. The final votes were cast by

attendees at the event, and as befits an

accolade of this nature, the winner’s trophy

was in a class of its own. The gold plated

“Archie” awarded to Combilift is unique and

was created to mark the Association’s 40th

year. “This very special trophy will naturally

have pride of place in our awards cabinet,”

said Combilift MD Martin McVicar.

The FLTA’s verdict on the Combi-CB when

it won the Innovation category in 2009 was

that “the Combi-CB compact multi-

directional counterbalance transfers the 4-

way principle into a small counterbalance

truck for the first time.” This ground-

breaking development, designed for

operations handling a mix of both palletised

and long loads, has since become one of

Combilift’s best selling models.

Sam Moffett of Combilift accepted both

awards from Olympic Champion Sally

Gunnell on behalf of the company. Martin

McVicar comments: “Innovation and

substantial investment in R&D have been our

bywords since we established Combilift and

we are delighted that this has once again

been recognised. To have the Combi-CB

acknowledged by our peers in the materials

handling sector as having made ‘the most

outstanding contribution to the industry

since the awards began’ is the ultimate

tribute. We extend our thanks to the FLTA

and everyone who voted for us.”

“As the Chair of the All Party

Parliamentary Furniture Group

(APPFG) and MP for Stevenage, home

of The Furniture Ombudsman and the

Furniture Industry Research

Association, I have needed to rapidly

understand the issues and pressures

that are facing the British Furniture

Industry. Fortunately the British

Furniture Confederation (BFC) has

been very helpful in highlighting

major concerns and working with me

and the other members of the APPFG

on how to address them.

Perhaps the most significant threat to the

industry at the moment is the

Government’s support to energy suppliers

in the form of subsidies. These subsidies

cost the taxpayer over £100M in 2009/10

and the figure is rising all the time. They

encourage the construction of new power

stations designed specifically to burn huge

quantities of biomass. Unfortunately,

biomass is a euphemism which actually

means trees and wood. Done on a small

scale and Combining Heat and Power

(CHP) Biomass plants are an excellent idea:

they help provide economic and

environmentally efficient solutions at a

local level.

Sadly, the subsidies are being harnessed

by big business and on an industrial scale;

this is neither sustainable nor

environmentally sound. Notwithstanding

this dilemma, the threat to our industry is

simply a by-product of this flawed policy:

the increased demand is steadily pushing

up the price of timber and board. Currently

this is just causing discomfort and concern

and manufacturers are absorbing the

additional costs, but as more and more

planned power stations are built the

demand for timber will increase and the

price will continue to rise. We are rapidly

reaching the point where manufacturers

will be forced to try to pass on these costs to

consumers, or cease trading. Retailers, who

themselves are already under huge

consumer price pressure will simply turn to

the Far East for cheaper, lower cost imports

to fill the void. While it can be argued by

free marketers that this is just the ongoing

price for globalization, they would be

forgetting that this subsidy is distorting the

market in the first place and placing a key

British manufacturing industry at a

competitive disadvantage. This is not good

enough, especially when we are trying to

promote British manufacturing and

exporting to help us grow our way out of

current economic situation.

I will be fighting the industry’s corner on

this issue. I urge everyone in the industry to

take a few seconds to register their

concerns at www.biomass-petition.org This

will help provide the ‘ammunition’ needed

to persuade Ministers of the strength of

feeling and prove that our case has

widespread support across the industry. I

plan to deliver the petition in person to 10

Downing Street to emphasise directly to

the Prime Minister how important this

issue is to us all. So please, get petitioning

now to ensure our furniture industry

remains competitive and world class.”

Chris Gasson25 Years WithWeinig UKChris Gasson has now served 25 years at Weinig UK. He

joined Weinig in the early days when they first set up in

the UK and had moved from Watlington to Abingdon.

Then, there were only 5 engineers and 2 office staff for

providing after sales service. Chris came with over 20 years

experience as an industrial engineer and the timber industry

was a complete change of career direction for him. He soon

settled into his new role and enjoyed his work and relationships

within Weinig and with customers. His dedication and

noticeable enthusiasm for everything he did, led to extra

responsibility as the company expanded with Waco, Dimter,

Grecon, and Raimann. Today he holds a senior position at

Weinig UK as Tooling Co-ordinator.

SCM Stefani LaserLine edgebander

The new Stefani laser edge banding technology resulting from in-depth scientific studies tocreate a very high quality finish on panel edges for companies in the furniture manufacturingindustry who have made quality finishing a cornerstone of their philosophy.

LASER LINE uses edges designed with an active internal layer which melts when coming into contactwith the laser beam thus forming a perfect and permanent bond with the panel. LASER LINE eliminates

visible glue lines and can be used to process edges with different heights and thicknesses for applicationon chipboard and MDF panels.

Integrated in the edge bander's cabin, the LASER LINE technology uses a diode laser source, reducingcosts considerably when compared with CO2 lasers, the latter having very low performance levels compared

to the installed power with very high energy consumption.

SCM Model Olimpic K260 EVOThe new compact Olimpic K260 Evo is the starting point for anyone requiring

professional quality edge banding as it is fitted with a patented panel conveyor systemequipped with a continuous belt that guarantees a smooth advancement of the panel,

avoiding any jerking, for an improved finish quality.Versatile, it can apply glue for various types of edges (PVC, ABS, wood, etc.) with a thickness

range of 0.4 - 6mm, on panels 8 - 60mm in height.Productive, thanks to the fast and simple set up of the machining heads when changing from thin edges, thick

edges with a radius, laminate and solid wood strip machining. Two melting temperatures and an easy to remove glue tank allow the user to edge band with two or more types of glue or colours.Various options available such as the rotating “nesting” tracers with two-support points to edge band panels with holes on the

upper side and the new glue scraper unit with double rotating tracer.

One of the most forward thinking

Scottish building companies is the

first in the UK to install the top of

the range HOMAG BMB 900

powerProfiler - a new generation of

window manufacturing machinery.

The machine, coupled with Oertli high

performance tooling and Klaes software,

manufactures the wide variety of different

styles of windows required for CCG

Customers.

Scottish agents for HOMAG UK, Deral,

first initiated the enquiry when John

Mackay suggested that CCG visit the

HOMAG factory in Schopfloch to see this

ground breaking machinery. John realised

that once CCG had seen the machine in

operation it would clarify the benefits and

highlight the advantages of the HOMAG

machine over the competition.

CCG’s general manager, John Paton,

along with workshop manager Robert Mair,

visited the HOMAG factory in Germany

and also combined a site visit to a local

window manufacturer. They were very

impressed with what they saw, “Seeing it

in a ‘real’ working environment opened

our eyes as to the potential of the machine

in our own business,” explains Robert Mair.

He continues, “HOMAG is the world

leader in woodworking machinery and its

vast knowledge and expertise in CNC

design and build gave us the confidence to

invest in this equipment.

“The versatility and speed of the

powerProfiler set our minds racing as to

the improvements it could make to our own

manufacturing processes. This, coupled

with HOMAG’s reputation and the after

sales service we receive locally from Deral,

convinced us that this was the right

machine for our business.

“The professionalism of the partnership

between Deral and HOMAG, from pre-

order right through to the delivery,

installation and commissioning has been

very impressive,” enthuses Robert.

The powerProfiler is basically three CNC

machines in one; it cuts the panels or

timber, drills and routs to create almost any

window style required. Just one step takes

you from planed timber to the finished

single part ready for surface coating. It has

the facility to machine single components

down to 150mm lengths.

The machine can handle multiple

bespoke window components in

continuous production thanks to its very

flexible clamping and highly intelligent

software systems. The loading zone is

capable of holding up to one hour’s worth

of production, meaning the powerProfiler

can be left to run whilst the machine

minder performs other tasks. If required

the BMB 900 can also process a door for

locks, hinges and other door furniture.

The unique machine design with

independent clamping systems and

processing units forms the basis for high

performance and flexibility. Different

processing operations such as sawing,

drilling, routing, component measurement

and 3D machining can all be combined

(simultaneously) to yield a high output

flexible processing centre.

Whether wood, wood composite

materials, plastics or aluminium – the

HOMAG BMB 900 is equipped to deal

with the material mix of the future. In

terms of joints, it manufactures everything

from mortise and tenon to counter, dowel

or mechanical corner connections.

HOMAG offers a wide variety of CNC

machines for the joinery market. Suitable

for small and mid-sized companies, right

up to high volume industrial size

operations there are machines designed for

every purpose.

traverse buffer which will hold

approximately 20 to 30 mins worth of

components and, at the out feed, there is a

buffer conveyor for accommodating all the

finished components prior to assembly. The

maximum component length is 4500 mm

and a typical average cycle time for one fully

machined component is 2 – 5 minutes

(depending on complexity) - this includes

positioning and all machining operations

including length profiling, end machining,

and all the other ancillary operations –

mortise holes, dowel holes for

mullions/transoms, hinge recesses, vent

slots or whatever else may be needed.

Typical innovative mechanical

features include a 5 axis head for

drilling and sawing; patented

clamping technology, ‘PowerGrip’;

the best controlled dust extraction

seen on any type of CNC machine; safety

through unprocessed part measurement

and collision management; tool storage

racks for up to 390 tools; full automation;

tool recognition by barcode label and many

more features.

Work instructions for the Conturex come

from an office based software program. The

software identifies exactly what has to be

done on each component, so the man on

the machine is only responsible for loading

the correct timber. Even the loading of the

machine is monitored by the Conturex to

check that the timber section is not over-

width, over-height, under-height or

incorrect length, before machining.

The Conturex is designed, in fact, to take

virtually everything into account for

machining windows and doors, to any

bespoke requirement, with minimal

changeover time; to provide total flexibility;

to ensure economic and efficient batch sizes

down to one-offs; to complete all

machining operations on

one machine,

at minimum cost and using minimum floor

space; to obtain top quality finish and

accuracy by high precision engineering; and

to avoid any additional finishing work after

the components leave the out feed buffer.

Technically, the Conturex provides a

realistic 90% operational production

capability in a working day, as opposed to

the usual average of between 50 to 80 per

cent. This is because of a buffer infeed unit

holding between 20 to 30 minutes worth of

production components, so if the operator

is absent, the machine keeps producing –

during tea breaks and lunch breaks for

example. Also, with appropriate control

systems covering extraction, pneumatics

and lighting, the Conturex can be left in

operation after the end of the working day

with no extra associated employee costs. On

average, an extra 100 minutes of

production is available per working day.

In addition to Hall & Tawse Joinery’s

Conturex, Weinig offer a range of other

models to suit different customer’s

individual needs. The C114 model features

one vertical machining head with a typical

average output of 3 – 6 minutes per

component (depending on complexity); and

the faster C226 which features at least two

vertical machining heads on two portals, with

an option to add an independent horizontal

and vertical drilling unit and a vertical or

horizontal shaper spindle to each of the two

portals – providing an impressive average

output of 0.8 minutes per component.

is at the forefront of innovative retail

equipment manufacturing, turning

over in excess of £7m. The company

operates a 24-hour production cycle

from a purpose built 120,000 square

foot facility. It has invested in state of

the art CNCs, beam saws, edgebanders,

postformers and laminaters. This

ongoing investment is supported by a

work force dedicated to delivering the

absolute highest standards of

precision and craftsmanship.

“Our reputation is created by the clients

who work with us,” explains Matthew

Lloyd, production director for Design &

Display. He continues, “Relationships with

our customers grow and prosper with our

commitment to providing exceptional levels

of service. To deliver this service we need to

invest in the latest equipment available and

that equipment has to give us the

confidence that we can consistently meet

the standards demanded by our prestigious

customers.

“We’ve been fans of Homag equipment

for some time now. The first items we

bought from them were CNC machines, a

BAZ 722 and a BAZ 322. Following this we

bought a couple of KAL 310 edgebanders.

All the Homag equipment has proved to be

extremely reliable with very little downtime.

The Need for a New CNC Machine

“In 2011 we were looking for a new 5-axis

aggregate CNC machine centre and so

visited a number of manufacturers to see

what was available. At Homag the new

Venture 316 machine had just been

installed in its Castle Donington show

room. When we saw it demonstrated we

were hugely impressed by what a full-blown

5-axis machine could do over and above a

standard aggregate CNC.

“It soon became obvious that there were

a host of production processes that we do

on the Venture 316 that we could not do on

a standard CNC machine. It was also clear

that with the 316 we could carry out these

processes on the one machine, whereas

previously we would have had to move the

work to two or three other machines to do

the same work.

“Whilst the Venture 316 was a bigger

investment, we could immediately see the

benefits it would bring to our business.

Consequently, we felt that if we were going

to invest in a new model it would be much

better to stretch ourselves and order the

machine that would take our business to a

new level.

Solid German Engineering“As an engineer, I really appreciate well

made, efficient machinery and it is plain to

see that all the Homag equipment is first

class. From its design and construction

through to the features and functionality,

everything is carefully thought out and

executed.

“Having placed the order, we also knew

from previous experience that Homag

would deliver the machine exactly when

they promised and that there would be

minimal disruption to our business. The

machine was up and running within about

a week and the Homag engineers carried

out training of our staff on site.

“Our operators love the machine. They

find Homag’s woodWOP software easy to

use and the graphics on screen give them a

clear picture of what’s happening on the

machine. It also makes life easier because

we use the woodWOP software on the other

Homag equipment in the business.

“In terms of service and support John

Shepherd, our main contact at Homag, has

always been very helpful and

knowledgeable, as are all the team in the

UK and Germany. John is always on the

end of a phone if we need advice and

support, even over the weekend. That level

of commitment and trust is vitally

important to our business and is one we

value very highly.

“The Venture 316 does everything we

expected it to do. The capabilities of the

machine have also allowed us to re-evaluate

and improve the way we build units for

customers. As time goes by we are finding

that we can do more and more on the one

machine, so it really is bringing significant

efficiencies to our manufacturing

processes.

“As for quality, it is way above what we

could achieve with the old equipment. The

Venture 316 delivers consistent results time

after time and gives us the confidence to

push the boundaries regarding the type of

units we can build for customers. We’re

doing more and more curved and 3D work

and this machine gives us the capability to

handle this easily. It also gives us great

potential for the future,” concludes

Matthew.

PACS are a company specialising in the

design and manufacture of polystyrene

and foam products, located in

Leicester's main industrial area.

Previously a manufacturer of wooden

packing cases, PACS now have over 20

years experience in their field,

offering solutions to almost any

packaging requirement, from straight

forward product transport solutions

to point of sale items, tool control and

protection.

PACS can offer a

number of different

products, including

Moulds in complex 3D

shapes for transport

protection such as End

Caps, Profiled Fitments,

Corner Protections and

Box Liners to provide

high transport durability

and manufactured to any

shape or size for the

highest quality of

protection. Also, PACS

will custom design and

manufacture all tool

control products to make

the working environment organised and

functional. Pads made from Polystyrene and

hard and soft foams, display signs and point

of sale products as well as plastic, timber and

plywood cases for display and transport

purposes illustrate PACS wide range of

products on offer.

With experience gained on a small, 12 year

old CNC machine, PACS Managing Director,

Malcolm Robotham, decided at the

beginning of 2011 to invest in a much larger

CNC Machining Centre and approached

SCM UK's local Distributor, Blyth Machinery

based near Leicester. Blyth's Mark Noon

discussed PACS' exact requirements and

soon afterwards demonstrations were

organised, quickly followed by an order being

placed for June delivery.

The SCM Pratix Z2-A CNC Machining

Centre was supplied with a 2750 x 1300mm

table size to accept 8 x 4ft sheets of various

materials, and can easily be loaded and

unloaded with tandem machining as and

when required. A generous 'Z'-axis of

180mm allows tall

components to be

accepted and machined. A

powerful 7.5KW

Electrospindle running up

to 24,000RPM is fed with

tools from a 10-station

rack-type tool changer,

with an F12 Drilling Unit

with independent vertical

and horizontal spindles

located adjacent to the

routing head.

SCM's multi-functional work table enables

the location of jigs or vacuum modules for

machining components or, using an MDF

base board, the nesting of component parts

from a full-size sheet of any material with

hold-down via a 250mc/hour vacuum pump.

Malcolm Robotham comments: "We are

very pleased with the SCM Pratix Z2. Having

to install a machine in a limited floor space

area, we did not want mats or light beams, so

with the provision of bumpers on the sides of

the moving beam, we saved valuable space

and therefore loading and loading is very

easy without worrying about stopping the

machine accidentally, and the feed speed is

perfect for our applications. We also like the

remote control unit for monitoring

machining and altering the spindle and feed

speeds if necessary during machining."

The Pratix is programmed by Todd Smith

in the office using SCM's Genio Cad/Cam

package that provides the entire machine

configuration with tooling files and

integrated macros managed using excell files.

Nesting mode management and 3D display

with simulation of all programmed

machining makes Genio easy to learn and

use. PACS' customers usually supply them

with DXF files for their machining

requirements.

Concluding, Malcolm Robotham states

"We have been very pleased with both SCM

and Blyth during the installation and

commissioning of the Pratix machine. We

use standard TCT tooling, the quality of the

finish obtained is excellent and we are

hoping to increase the level of business

obtained as we can offer new and existing

customers a fast and efficient service,

whether machining a one-off or much larger

quantities."

Picturesque Bodnant Estate, situated

in the Conwy Valley in North Wales,

is far from an every day destination

for equipment produced by Daltons

Wadkin. However in June 2011

Joinery Shop Manager Andy Cull and

Malcolm Parry-Jones travelled to

Nottingham with a view to acquiring

woodworking machinery to fully

equip a brand new joinery shop to

replace an existing facility in an old

mill which had been outgrown by the

requirements of the estate.

The Bodnant Estate has over 1000 acres of

woodlands and intends with its management

plan to use more of its own timber in the

production of making products.

The impressive new shop situated by the

banks of a tidal creek from the River Conwy is

entirely clad in hardwood grown on the estate

and provides a spacious clean environment

within which to work. It has been expanded

in order that it can offer its services outside the

estate to both the business and private sector

for quality hand made bespoke items. The

Estate Joinery has made bespoke items for the

National Trust at neighboring Bodnant

Gardens including trellis and pergola bridges,

all made as per their original features.

Joinery is also required for their own use

which includes the production and fitting of a

diverse range of products from hand rails to

foot bridges, signs and fencing, to say nothing

of the maintenance of the many farms and

holiday cottages which come within Bodnant’s

responsibilities.

The estate had a strict budget which

Daltons Wadkin were able to meet by

providing a selection of factory serviced

equipment including Band Resaw, Sliding

Table Panel Saw, Spindle Moulder, Chisel

Mortiser, Crosscut Saw, Single End Tenoner

and Bandsaw and all of these were delivered

and installed by Daltons Wadkin engineers in

the new Bodnant joinery shop last October.

Project Manager Stephen Dixon is

delighted with the new equipment which has

enabled Andy and Malcolm to produce joinery

to the standard required and given them an

opportunity to expand activities and the use of

the prolific home grown timber.

Francis Dalton commented “We were

delighted and privileged to be chosen as

suppliers to the Bodnant Estate and it was a

pleasure to visit the new shop and see what is

being achieved in this beautiful part of Wales.”

JOINERY

Page 20: Panel & Joinery Production May/June 2012

P&R Shopfitting Ltd provides a

complete carpentry and joinery service

within the retail and construction

industries. Working from its offices

and workshop in Long Eaton, on the

Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire border,

it successfully services clients both

nationwide and overseas. Often larger

manufacturers call upon P&R’s support

to produce joinery items for many high

street stores and corporate customers.

“We have a core belief in high quality

workmanship and customer service,”

explains P&R director, Paul Cannon. He

continues, “The Company’s fast-growing

reputation is a reflection of our diligence

and professionalism. Since we started the

business in July 2000, we have always

insisted on purchasing the best equipment

available because this helps in our quest to

provide first class quality products on a

consistent basis – to be the best you need

the best equipment to get the job done

right, at the right price.

“Our relationship with HOMAG began

back in 2002 when Simon Brooks, then

sales manager for HOMAG UK, sold us a

BRANDT KD 56c edgebander. We were

very impressed by the KD 56c and so when

it came to replacing it with a bigger

machine a couple of years later, we

naturally invested in a BRANDT KDN 650c

edgebander.

“In November 2004 we bought a WEEKE

BHC 550 CNC machine for nesting. At the

time it was the best in its class for matrix

bed CNC machines. As our business

expanded, however, our need for greater

volume production grew rapidly and we

looked to add another machine in order to

keep up with the demand.

“One of the biggest issues we faced with

our current machine which only had a 10’ x

4’ bed was our use of jumbo boards. These

boards had to be cut in half to fit onto the

old nesting machine. When we spoke to

HOMAG about it Simon recommended the

WEEKE Vantage 38L with a 3.1 x 2.1 metre

bed, big enough to accommodate jumbo

boards without cutting them in half.

“We saw the Vantage 38L in operation at

W10 in the NEC which helped convince us

that it was the right solution. Like all

HOMAG Group products, the build quality

stood out massively and that gave us great

confidence. To ease cash flow, HOMAG

finance put together a very attractive

package for us to buy the machine and so it

really was a no brainer.

“To ensure we got the best out of the

Vantage from the off, we sent three of our

guys to HOMAG UK to train on the

woodWOP software and then they also had

a day’s training on the machine when it was

installed. To a man they were mightily

impressed with both the machine and the

software. They say it’s the easiest system

they’ve ever used, a fact borne out by the

impact the new WEEKE has had on our

production capacity.

“With the Vantage 38L we are easily

coping with the increased new business.

The machine deals effortlessly with a wide

range of materials including plywood, MDF

and chipboard. We have found that it is

great for both volume production and one-

off bespoke work. The nesting is easier and

more efficient and we expect the machine

to have paid for itself within two years.

“It’s a pleasure dealing with HOMAG.

With their showroom and offices only two

miles down the road it is extremely

convenient for spares and if we need an

engineer. The real benefit, however, is the

durability and build quality of all the

HOMAG Group equipment and I would

recommend anyone looking to invest in

new woodworking machinery to talk to

HOMAG first,” concludes Paul from P&R

Biesse Group has always been at the

forefront of innovative technology, for

over 40 years the company has expanded

and grown to now being the world’s

largest manufacturer of CNC machines.

At the recent Technodomus show for

Wood Technology, which took place in Italy,

Biesse proudly exhibited its vast product

range, including machinery from Biesse’s

full family of brands, Biesse, BiesseEdge,

Selco, Bre.Ma, Comil, RBO and VIET as

well as its full range of software.

Biesse has more recently been focusing

on its smaller entry-level machines and how

it can incorporate the advanced technology

developed for its high-end products into its

range of smaller machines, this is

something Biesse has achieved across its

range. In the last two years Biesse has

launched an incredibly strong line-up of

small machines that offer big

advancements in technology for the small –

medium business.

New products that were demonstrated at

Technodomus were; The Biesse Selco 4

Series, which now offers the market a

simple, reliable and high performing panel

sizing centre with Twin Pusher that can

offer up to 40% more production. This

technology has been filtered down through

the Selco range and gives customers an

excellent option and a highly competitive

entry-level price.

The BiesseEdge Akron 1300, automatic

edgebander made its debut at the show, the

1300 range is Biesse’s smallest single sided

automatic edgebander and offers simplicity

in its design and flexibility in its

composition with minimal footprint. Biesse

UK have already reported that the 1300 has

received great interest and sales in the UK

and it is expected to continue.

Biesse’s Skipper V31, was also on display

and continues to receive great interest since

its launch last year. The smallest of the

range, is the compact and versatile Biesse

numerical control drilling machine that

combines flexibility and performance in a

reduced floor space and also offers optional

routing capabilities.

It is easy to see the advancement in

technology in the range of Biesse

smaller machines that has filtered

down from the high-end

products, when this

technology is

paired with

Biesse’s 5 Year

Total Care

warranty, it makes buying a new smaller

machine an attractive choice for customers.

Biesse UK’s sales manager, Chris Arend,

said “Biesse’s 5 year total care warranty and

service package makes it easier for our

customers to afford a new Biesse machine,

knowing that they have a fixed cost with

servicing and the warranty included in the

price of the machine. The fact that our new

range of smaller machines come with the

same Total Care package and advanced

technology as our larger high-end machines

make them an even more attractive option

to our customers”.

Technodomus 2012, the third

International Exhibition of Wood and

Panel Processing Technology for the

Construction and Furniture

Industries, recently took place from 20

to 24th April at the Rimini Exhibition

Centre.

On the large SCM Group stand at

Technodomus, covering over 7,000 square

metres, over 80 machines were exhibited

and in excess of 5,000 visitors from 50

countries worldwide attended their stand,

where there was plenty of space to affirm

the strong bond that links the SCM Group

with the "Made in Italy" design and

technology.

Technodomus 2012 was not only a place

to find new technological solutions but also

ideas, interactive tools and new ways of

managing complex production processes

with extreme simplicity and presentations

that clearly highlight the SCM Group's

leadership in designing and implementing

industrial systems.

With the motto “The leader in

production processes”,

the SCM Group aimed to demonstrate its

vocation as a supplier of complete, turnkey

systems. With a series of interactive tools, 3-

D renderings, films and personal accounts,

SCM presented their experiences and their

most powerful and flexible technical

solutions. A clear and explicit presentation

of SCM Group's ability to create the “ideal

factory” for any type of finished product,

thanks to the ability to carry out research

and pursue a continuous innovation

process.

For example, the innovative 6-axis

interpolating technology in the brand new

Routech 'OIKOS' CNC Machining Centre,

which is the signature of the SCM Group's

campaign for Technodomus, by adding an

additional 6th axis to the usual 5 axes to

obtain perfection in the production of

wooden beams, a winning proposal for the

timber building sector of the market. The

success of these machines strongly depends

on what you cannot see, that is to say, the

effectiveness of the software that we

decided to develop in-house.

The 5-axis “Author M800” CNC

Machining Centre from Morbidelli, is a

powerful and flexible machine for the

furniture industry, equipped with up to 70

tools and a drilling head with 57

independent spindles. It has a completely

new gantry type structure, redesigned to

totally eliminate vibration, guaranteeing an

extremely high quality finish. Furthermore

the newly designed mechanical structure

allows the Author M800 to perform heavy-

duty machining, for extreme flexibility and

quality of the finished product, in any

situation.

The Author M800 features high

production efficiency achieved with 2

electro-spindles, one of which is moved by 5

controlled and interpolating axes, with

maximum power electro-spindles of up to

18KW on the main head and 8.5KW on the

second head, and a dedicated tool magazine

that reduces fixturing times so the units are

always ready to work. A wide range of

worktables is available, with the latest

technology manual, semi-automatic and

automatic worktables to meet all possible

production requirements, with a useful

work area of 6360x1905 mm.

“Xylog-Maestro” is the new programming

software and is a fully functional software

that is easy to use and quick to learn. It

also allows drawings and geometries to be

imported directly.

The new Stefani 'Evolution S' Double-

Sided Edge Banding machine with a panel

squaring function is a step forward in edge

banding technology. In fact, it's the first

industrial model on the market to also

provide the panel squaring function in

reduced dimensions compared with the

alternatives marketed by other

manufacturers. Evolution S perfectly

combines the technological wealth and

productivity of edge banding machines

designed for the medium to high sector of

the market with the reduced dimensions

and minimal investment that are essential

in the small/medium companies, the target

market.

Evolution S offers not only a double

shoulder for the simultaneous machining

of the two panel sides, but also a panel

squaring function that immediately resets

the correct panel geometry and dimension

when necessary and all this with an

investment similar to that for an average

single-sided edge banding machine.

Working with an Evolution S is extremely

simple. The operator can, in fact, use the

same skills learnt on a traditional single-

sided edge banding machine, without

needing any further training.

The new SCM 'Profiset' Automatic

Planer Moulder was launched at

Technodomus. The working space in a

workshop is never enough to get through

all of the orders and machining required,

particularly in a highly flexible and varied

market such as the current one. Profiset 40

is the new automatic planer moulder which

has compactness and ergonomics as its

strong points. The Profiset 40 comes as

standard equipped with an idle roller in the

outfeed table to guarantee effective

feed and an improved finish,

independent dust hoods, infeed table

adjustment above the table and

a new NC with feed

speed control.

The electronic

version of the machine

is even more dynamic

due to a single push-button for sequential

automatic starting of the motors, automatic

management of the working sections and

feed speed control.

The Profiset 60 version is designed to be

very sturdy. The new feed system, using

Cardan joints and a gearbox with a 3KW

motor, is the technological heart of this

machine providing higher productivity and

producing even

better finishes.

Distinctive features

include pneumatic pressure on the feed

wheels and an inverter for continuous

speed control 5 - 25metres/min. Available

in four different configurations to meet all

moulding requirements, with four or five

spindles or the possibility of adding a

universal shaft.

SCM proudly presented the new

'VERTICUT 60', the vertical panel saw for

dynamic, developed panel cutting

requirements, for those seeking a versatile

machine capable of operating in a limited

floor space. The VERTICUT design,

developed by SCM, was based on the desire

to make the production process really

simple and easy in any

working condition. The

designers were driven to

focus on an “unusual”

market sector, smartly

combining

sturdiness and

smoothness so that this superior machine

now rivals other manufacturer's models.

Sturdy and with the performance of

much larger machines, this saw suits all

cutting requirements. The VERTICUT 60

is available in two versions, one manual

and one automatic with continuous action,

having working

dimensions of 4300mm for horizontal

width cutting and 2080mm height cutting.

Both versions fully benefit from the

2200mm vertical cutting height with a

working thickness of 60mm to meet the

most diverse machining needs.

New software, called "Professor

Pappagallo", made its' debut in Rimini,

giving a representation of what will be the

new relationship which, according to the

SCM Group, must exist between technology

and the end user based upon maximum

simplicity. This special software lets anyone

execute a machining program, even without

specific knowledge of CNC programming.

Just follow the “Professor's” instructions to

be at ease when machining a panel or

diagnosing a problem, a competent work

A wide variety of manufacturers are

planning to visit both W12 events – many of

them on the back of extremely rewarding

experiences from previous exhibitions held

under the “W” banner.

Among these are Ben Gray of Allenday

Kitchens who says: “We bought machines at

W10 and will certainly visit W12 if, for

nothing else, to keep abreast of the latest

developments. The staging of the parallel

show Working with Design will be of

obvious interest to us.”

“We will definitely be visiting W12 in October

as a team”

Philip Laight of Blackthorn Workshop in

Worcestershire who manufactures specialist

contract cabinet furniture for the security

and control room sectors agrees: W10 was

very beneficial to us and we’ll be back at W12

and very interested in the new Working with

Design exhibition.”

Door component product company

Canopy Products are based in Lancashire are

enthusiastic about the prospect of W12. MD

Alan Scaife says: “It’s extremely important

for us to keep up to date with developments

in terms of machinery and materials – W12

is the ideal opportunity at which to do this.”

Other niche manufacturers have their

own reasons for attending. Cheryl Stubbs of

carcase manufacturers Century Productions

in Staines, Middlesex says that she and co-

director Mark Green will definitely attend

W12: “We will especially be targeting

edgebanding machines and are really

pleased that Working with Design with it’s

big contingent of edging material

manufacturers will be running alongside – a

great opportunity!”

Stoneham Plc are a fifth generation

family-owned manufacturer of fine English

kitchens and other cabinet furniture. The

company holds The Royal warrant to HM

The Queen and operates some of the most

advanced workshops in the land. Mike

Stoneham, Production Director, says that

they will definitely be visiting W12 in

October as a team: “It’s important to have a

national exhibition of machinery and

associated products as we can’t always spare

the time to visit international shows. This

year having the machinery show running

alongside the exhibition for components and

materials will be very important. We can

assess new product introductions and, at the

same time, see technical application

techniques all under one roof. This allows us

to understand the possibilities (and

limitations) of ideas going forwards and

realize the feasibility of future planning and

projects. It also means that we don’t have to

spend more than a day out of the factory –

very important.”

“It’s extremely important for us to keep up to

date with developments in terms of machinery

and materials”

All of these companies are in for a very

interesting dual exhibition experience by all

accounts. Feed back from signed-up

exhibitors is starting to indicate significant

levels of new technology or at least

important upgrades. The W12 Working with

Design show has many exhibitors excited

with one major international firm indicating

that they will use the occasion for a ground

breaking new product launch.

All of this will be of huge interest to Kevin

Johnson, MD of Abbey Furniture in Selby,

North Yorkshire. They manufacture quality

bespoke cabinet furniture at the high end of

the market and Kevin says that while both

shows are of important interest, they will

especially be focusing of Working with

Design.

Of course there are as many specialist

joinery firms planning to visit as there are

furniture companies. One of these is AD

Canning Joinery located just outside of

Londonderry in Northern Ireland. Feedback

from Ryan Canning: We will definitely visit

the shows. We find that the spacing is good

as there’s always something new to see and

it has been very worthwhile from us each

time in the past. Although we are mainly

involved in joinery production the Working

with Design part will be very interesting and

important for us to visit.

JAGUAR Land Rover needs no

introduction: as one of the UK’s

premier car manufacturers specializing

in the design and production of both

luxury saloons and desirable sports

cars, and off road vehicles.

But, did you know that based at the

Browns Lane plant in Coventry are the

main veneering and lacquer workshops that

not only produce the door cappings, centre

consoles and dashboards for the Jaguar

Land Rover range of vehicles, but also for

Aston Martin.

This site was purchased by Lawrence

Automotive from Jaguar Land Rover in

December 2010: Jaguar Land Rover is still its

biggest customer, and many of the people

working at the factory today formerly worked

for Jaguar Land Rover.

Needless to say, all equipment purchased

at the Browns Lane plant has to meet the

strictest demands in terms of quality and

durability, to withstand production levels and

meet performance, in terms of the

productivity and quality required by this

international marque of distinction.

When looking at ways to increase

production volume back in 2007, it was quite

apparent that one of the areas proving very

labour intensive was the preparation of

veneers prior to and after lacquering. The

technique employed involved a series of brush

wheels prior to lacquer, followed by the

component parts being placed on pad sanders.

The operators previously had the arduous task

of manually sanding back and denibbing each

component using two different high grade

sanding belts (400 and 600 grit) prior to the

final product being delivered to the automatic

polishing machines.

Based on the timed production trials, it

was found that to meet the proposed

demand for 1,100 car sets per week, existing

methods would take an excessive amount of

hours. To resolve this very labour intensive

and costly issue, an enquiry went out to a

number of producers of sanding machinery

to see what was available to assist in

speeding up this operation.

One of the companies to receive this enquiry

was Kündig Ltd, who was presented with PDF

drawings of the component parts. This was

backed up by a single sample from which a

small batch had been produced, then sent out

to relevant manufacturers for assessment.

Kündig was the only company to

successfully return the sample back sanded!

One of the problems faced when

producing a certain type of door capping,

was during the building up of the veneer, the

actual aluminium substrate curved slightly,

which, coupled with the fixing tags on the

back of the substrate, meant the components

would be difficult to feed through a

traditional style sanding machine.

The answer to this was to have a carrier

board designed and manufactured so that a

number of components could be easily

clamped flat and sanded in a single cycle of

the machine’s operation.

Further trials ensued, which resulted in a

visit by Jaguar Veneer Manufacturing Project

Engineers to Kündig’s Wetzikon

manufacturing facility in Switzerland, where

a number of samples were sent to be

sanded. The dedicated showroom in

Wetzikon proved to be the ideal platform to

try different specifications of the machine

but ultimately the most beneficial solution

was found to be a machine having two

oblique sanding heads with one mounted at

+10° and the other mounted at –10°.

This configuration is referred to as the

Kündig V-Max and is ideally suited to those

looking to achieve a high gloss finish which is

accomplished by not only giving a shear cut

across the surface, but the abrasives sand the

surface from two different directions giving a

flatter, mirror like surface which is also free

from abrasive defects and raised fibres.

An additional issue of occasional ‘pooling’

of lacquer which formed raised lumps on

the surface was encountered. To resolve this

a calibration roller also had to be offered as a

first sanding head which would be set circa

0.1 mm above the component parts; this

would simply strip away the surplus built up

of lacquer prior to the components reaching

the finer grades of abrasive mounted on the

two oblique sanding heads.

Trials using the sample components for

this test were sanded both on the raw veneer

pre-lacquer and also on a number of

lacquered components which were sanded

in readiness to go straight onto the

automatic polishers. Stringent quality checks

on the parts resulted in a high level of

satisfaction that the process/machine could

achieve the levels of finish expected.

Another result which was quite startling

was the actual productivity of the machine

which, when compared to the previous

manual manufacturing methods, the Kündig

V-Max could process multiple components

per cycle, completing the same amount of

production in less hours, saving valuable

production time, utility usage, consumables

such as belts and in addition to all that was

shown to pay back in a little over six months!

Having proved that the Kündig machine

was more than capable of the task in hand,

the final criteria for Jaguar was to have at

least ten reference points where the Kündig

machine had been installed.

The feedback was exemplary, resulting in

an order for the Kündig Brilliant-3 V-Max

1100 RCd-Cd+ some 12 months after the

initial enquiry.

The final specification of the machine

included a reverse conveyor to bring the

sanded components and carrier-board back

to the operator for loading and off loading

the components along with infeed and

outfeed tables for additional support.

Lawrence Automotive is very happy with

the service the sander is giving more than

three years down the line. Supervisor,

Darren Goodyear, reported that the sander

had given an immediate 20% increase in

productivity, and that at one point the sander

had been working on 1,200 sets/week,

greater than the initial target capacity of

1,100 sets/week.

Craig Murphy is one of two operators

working regularly on the Kündig sander. He

is very impressed with it, saying that it is the

fastest and the best sander that he has used

… and he has used several!

He also appreciates the fact that it takes

the hard work out of the manual sanding

process described above. Craig also reports

that the machine is extremely reliable and

really easy to maintain.

The sander is programmed by Lawrence

Automotive’s engineering department. Once

the programme is set, the operator can make

minor adjustments to suit individual pieces

at the machine itself, but otherwise it is

simply a question of allowing the

programme to run: something else that

Craig appreciates!

Darren Goodyear reports that, while

Jaguar Land Rover is still Lawrence

Automotive’s biggest customer, work is now

also coming in from other sources. For

example, a new contract has recently been

signed with a company specialising in

limousine conversions and the manufacture

of hearses, both areas where only the best

will do: the Kündig sander will be used in

both of these projects, particularly for the

production of the rear of the hearse, where

the coffin sits.

Another prestigious project that

Lawrence Automotive has undertaken is the

production of a captain’s table for HMS

Diamond, featuring an inlaid emblem in

the centre of the table: and again, the

Kündig sander was a key part of the

production process.

Just as in the days when the plant was

owned by Jaguar Land Rover, Lawrence

Automotive has the highest standards when

it comes to both the work it produces and

the machinery it operates.

The Kündig V-Max sander is a key part of

this process.

Walford Timber Limited are essentially

a family business originally

established in 1945 by Herbert Smith

on an ancient sawmill site close to

Ross-on-Wye.

During the early part of 2011 current MD

George Smith, grandson of the founder,

took the decision to replace an ageing

Robinson Planing and Moulding Machine

thereby providing their production facility

with higher performance, updated

technology, reductions in set up time, ease

of operation and above all a heavy duty feed

works which would cope with both wet and

dry timber.

All in all the requirement was for a

strong and very capable machine which

would meet the company’s requirements

for years to come. This is where Daltons

Wadkin came in. Sales Director Andy

Walsh initially received the enquiry from

George Smith and was able to source a

Wadkin 6-Head XE Through-Feed High

Speed Moulder which fully met Walford

Timber’s criteria. The machine which had

been previously used was subsequently

refurbished in the Daltons Wadkin

engineering facility in Nottingham and

after expert attention from their

experienced engineering and electrical

personnel was finally delivered, installed

and commissioned by Daltons Wadkin at

the Herefordshire site last November.

Walford Timber Ltd provide numerous

services to their customers throughout

many parts of the UK which include the

machining and manufacturing of a wide

range of timber products. The company

hold large stocks of timber sections, garden

products and fencing materials and

manufacture an extensive range of gates,

decking, foot bridges, styles and many

other bespoke timber products. George

Smith commented “We are delighted with

the Wadkin machine which meets or even

exceeds our specification and is already

enabling us to speed up our production and

provide an improved product. When the

machine was delivered it was hardly

recognizable from when we first saw it

during its period of use, the attention to

detail and overall service provided by

Daltons Wadkin has been top class.”

Francis Dalton said “We were very

pleased to have the opportunity of meeting

Walford Timber’s requirements. They are a

family run company similar to our own and

we like to think we can play a small part in

their success.”

Leading supplier of high-performance

routing, engraving and cutting

systems to the industrial

woodworking, furniture production,

joinery and panel processing

industries, AXYZ International has

introduced a new helical rack and

pinion drive system as an optional

production enhancement for all AXYZ

Series machines. Installation of this

powerful new tooling device will, it

is claimed, greatly reduce

wear by comparison with

conventional rack

and pinion drive

systems,

significantly increase

feed rates and lead to

smoother, quieter and more

accurate cutting in the most

demanding applications likely to be

encountered.

Unlike conventional rack and pinion

drive systems, the new AXYZ system

operates through multiple gear teeth at all

times. This greatly decreases wear on the

system as a result of more even distribution

of the load over

several gear teeth

and

significantly increases the working life of

the system. When specified as an optional

production feature on AXYZ Series

machines, the helical pinions would

normally be driven by a high-performance

servomotor operating via

a precision planetary

gearbox to deliver

a rigid and more

powerful drive

system with little

or no backlash and

to enable much

higher feed rates and

more precise cutting.

As the economic downturn continues,

most manufacturers are on the

lookout for efficient ways to reduce

operating costs. Users of dust

extraction equipment – in effect, all

woodworking and furniture companies

– can take encouragement from the

experience of High Wycombe-based

Verco Office Furniture Ltd.

Established 100 years ago, Verco is one

of Britain’s leading office furniture

manufacturers with extensive ranges of

ergonomic seating, desks, tables, storage

and screens for all office or business

environments. The family-run business

has grown over the years on its original site

and today employs 120 people within a

modern 50,000 sq. metre facility.

The sizeable woodworking machine

shop at Verco has a large number of high-

performance machines requiring high

volumes of extraction to deal with the dust

and chips generated. The dust extraction

system, which has been installed for a

number of years, employs four main

extraction fans with a total power rating of

167kW. And, as is the case with most

workshops, the fans were installed to run

continuously at full load, all day long.

Last year, Verco management decided

that they would explore the potential for

energy savings by taking advantage of the

free ‘energy saving appraisal’ offered by

Dust Control Systems Ltd (DCS). Mick

Pitwell, who is responsible for machine

shop maintenance at Verco explains: “DCS,

who have maintained our dust extraction

plant for many years, came in and were

able to determine the extraction demand

for every single machine in the shop. From

this they identified how the individual

systems could be adjusted for volume and

duty cycle, with the aim of lowering the

average total volume and, therefore, the

power usage.”

DCS presented their findings and put

forward an energy-saving proposal which

involved retro-fitting their innovative

Ecogate computerised optimisation system.

It was estimated that the system would

result in savings of up to £14,000 per year.

Verco commissioned DCS to install the

system which comprises: four Ecogate

greenBOX controllers; Ecogate motorised

gates fitted to all machines; and variable

speed drives for each of the four fans. The

greenBOX controllers constantly monitor

individual machines and determine the

optimum speed of the respective fan. The

system also detects when all machines on

any fan line are inactive, and will shut that

particular fan down.

At the time of going to press, the system

at Verco had been operating for 30 weeks.

Ian Rayner, technical sales engineer for

DCS Ecogate, had just visited site and

interrogated each controller. From the

stored data he was able to determine that

savings already amounted to more than

£9,000 when measured against pre-

installation figures. This means that

savings are on track to far exceed initial

estimates.

Mr Pitwell added: “We are extremely

pleased with the level of savings and with

the all-round efficiency of the system – it

virtually looks after itself. Also, we are

enjoying a noticeably quieter life in the

machine shop, much to the delight of the

workforce and our visiting HSE inspector.”

The industry body that represents the

UK sawmilling and wood processing

industry has joined the Stop Burning

Our Trees (SBOT) campaign, urging the

government to cut subsidies for

burning UK wood in power stations.

David Sulman, Executive Director, UK

Forest Products Association added his

organisation’s voice to the growing number

of parties demanding the government review

a policy that has had significant knock-on

effects for companies involved in the supply

and manufacturing of wood and wood-based

products.

He questioned whether the subsidy for

burning trees in biomass power stations was

an effective use of the country’s natural

resources from both an economic and

environmental point of view.

“Our trees and forests and the wood

products derived from them provide us with

valuable economic, social and environmental

benefits. We must ensure that we maximise

the delivery of these. Burning wood that is

suitable for product manufacture squanders

that opportunity. The message is simple;

stop burning our trees.”

“Trees that would otherwise be used to

make useful products for us to use are

already being burnt in power stations in

Great Britain, supported by generous

Government subsidies; this is a scandalous

situation and a complete waste of a valuable

resource which should be put to better use,”

he continued.

“It seems that the Government has

identified biomass, including wood, as a

‘quick fix’ to its problems of a short term lack

of electricity generating capacity.

“First the Government wanted to sell off

our forests, now it is paying power stations

to burn trees. Our trees, woods, forests and

wood products have a great story to tell; not

least their carbon benefits and their role in

mitigating the effects of climate change. For

this reason we should focus on product

manufacture first, then recycling and reuse

and finally, at the end of its useful service

life, we can use wood for heat and power

purposes”.

The UK Forest Products Association is the

latest body to back the SBOT campaign,

which is aiming to collect 100,000

signatures to enable a debate to be raised in

the House of Commons.

For years waste disposal charges have

eaten into the profits of firms in the

wood working industry. Taking time to

review waste processes could help

companies reduce or eliminate these

costs and transform wood waste into a

money saving or income generating

business asset.

Woodwaste Technology offers companies

a number of alternatives to traditional wood

waste disposal methods, with technology

that can reduce the hundreds or thousands

of pounds being spent by businesses each

month on such as skip hire charges, and

instead help transform their wood waste

into a valuable commodity that can be sold

for cash or used as fuel.

Woodwaste Technology has developed an

exceptional reputation in the industry for its

UK manufactured wood waste burners that

convert wood waste into heat. Last year the

company added shredding and briquetting

technology to its portfolio when it became

the UK distributor for Gross, providing

additional reliable and cost-effective waste

disposal solutions to wood working firms

across the UK and Eire.

Briquetting machines compress waste

wood shavings and dust into a cylindrical

form, making the waste easier to handle

and ideal to use as fuel due to its high

calorific value. All types of wood, including

soft or hard woods, plywood, MDF or

particleboard can be shredded to create

briquettes, which are easy to use, transport

and store. Businesses can use the

briquettes in wood burning heaters or sell

them to generate an additional revenue

stream for the business.

Kurt Cockcroft, MD of Woodwaste

Technology explains, “In today’s

manufacturing environment, every penny

counts and there’s increased emphasis on

environmental impact. By investing in

shredding and briquetting technology,

wood waste stops being a cost and starts

becoming an asset with value. Instead of a

business paying to have its waste taken

away, the business can use the waste to

generate heat or sell as fuel – saving or

making extra money for a business.”

Gross shredding and briquetting

machines have a reputation in the industry

of being economical and highly

dependable, and there’s a wide range of

shredders and briquetting pressers

available, for all needs and applications.

Woodwaste Technology’s years of

expertise in wood waste solutions have

helped many companies reduce their waste

disposal costs.

A highly successful manufacturer of

high-end bespoke commercial

furniture has solved a bottleneck in

its sizing operations with a Striebig

Compact vertical panel saw.

The saw has also delivered more accurate

sizing and better use of workshop space.

Manufacturing by Design creates hand-

crafted furniture for some of the UK’s

leading design and building practices,

commissioned for blue chip clients in the

retailing, banking and hospitality sectors.

Managing director Tony Juchau set up

the business in1992. The company has

expanded steadily since then, culminating

last year in a move to 9,300 sq ft premises

in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire. It has 20

employees, including eight highly skilled

cabinet makers.

“Despite all the talk of gloom and doom

in the media, business is buoyant at the

moment and we have a good order book,”

said Mr Juchau.

Amongst recent prestige jobs have been

retail installations for Diptyque, the French

perfumers and makers of luxury scented

candles, and the fitting out of Graff

Diamonds’ new flagship store in Bond

Street, London.

The company has also been

commissioned for installations in Europe,

the Middle East and the United States.

It was because of the steady increase in

demand for its work that a second saw was

needed in the workshop.

“We have a panel saw which was not able

to cope with the increasing amount of

sizing we needed to do on it,” said Mr

Juchau. “As most of our work starts off with

panel sizing, this was causing major

problems further down the line.”

After deciding to invest in a second

machine, Mr Juchau and workshop

manager Chris Lawley agreed that a vertical

panel saw would save on workshop space.

“From reading the trade journals we soon

realised that Striebig was considered the

bench mark to aim at,” said Mr Juchau.

“The two other manufacturers we looked

at in addition to Striebig offered cheaper

machines but they were far less well-built

and not as robust,” said Mr Lawley. “They

were also not as simple to set up, which is

important as almost all of our work consists

of one-offs.”

They then talked to Striebig’s UK agent,

T.M. Machinery Sales, about which model

would be best for their needs.

“T.M. suggested that a Compact would

do the job well, so I went to look at one

used at a local kitchen cabinet maker,” said

Mr Lawley. “Seeing it working and listening

to the positive views of the operators

clinched our decision to buy. It’s amazingly

accurate and cuts perfectly square every

time, which is not the case with the panel

saw which needs to be checked and reset

from time to time.”

Manufacturing by Design’s Compact

4164 sizes various sheet materials, mainly

veneered boards and MDF, plus the

occasional acrylic sheet, ranging in

thickness from 19 to 38mm.

The machine is the smallest in the nine-

strong entry level series with a cutting

range of 3100 x 1644mm (10 ft x 5 ft) and a

maximum depth of cut of 60mm.

Featuring automatic moving backing

support and with a powerful 3.9kW motor,

it has exceptionally efficient integral TRK

dust extraction that surpasses current

European health and safety legislation.

Useful accessories chosen by

Manufacturing by Design included a

scoring saw for laminates and a 600mm

strip cutter for repeat cuts.

Felice Iannone, one of the company’s

team of cabinet makers, said most of the

panel sizing work is now being done on the

Striebig.

“As well as being simple to set up, we

get a totally accurate cut every time and it’s

far easier to load the biggest panels on to it

than on to the panel saw. It has made panel

sizing much, much easier.”

Established over 80 years ago, WJ

White Limited, located in Swindon,

Wiltshire, manufacture high quality

workplace furniture with an excellent

reputation for applying great skill and

craftsmanship to everything they

produce, with a heavy focus on

customer satisfaction.

Modern-day technology newly installed in

WJ White's factory has brought with it all

the benefits of method and efficiency, yet

maintaining their craft skills which are at

the heart of everything they do. As markets

change and new working procedures are

introduced, workplace furniture designs

have evolved too, with White's Concept

Drawing Team constantly developing new

unique products enhanced by new

materials and new finishes.

WJ White have three clearly defined

brands: Congress - which is a range of

exceptional wood-veneer furniture, Crome -

developed to manage all power and data

requirements, and Custom Build, which is

bespoke designs to meet a client's specific

requirements in both design and function.

These three ranges enables WJ White to

fulfil all meeting room, conference and

boardroom furniture requirements, and

open-plan and cellular offices, where only

the finest veneers, substrates and finishes

will do.

Three years ago, Managing Director,

Peter White, decided to move WJ White's

complete operation to a modern 30,000sq.

foot unit, as their existing factory had so

many limitations,

surrounded by houses,

working hours were

restricted due to noise

issues from the outside

dust extraction system.

Also, floor space was at a

premium, which made

incoming materials

difficult to access the

production area,

movement of work

around the factory

inefficient, and assembly

and despatch of finished

goods problematical.

Works Director, Gerry Donaldson,

comments "With the move, we had the

opportunity to completely analyse our

production systems, with an empty factory

and floor space as a blank canvas.

Machinery, finishing lines, spraying,

assembly and despatch could be placed

exactly where we wanted them for

maximum efficiency, with power and dust

extraction services put in place before the

machines were moved in to avoid

disruption to our production as little as

possible. We also allowed floor space for

new machinery to complement existing

machines or to replace older machines with

the very latest technology."

SCM Group UK's Area Sales Manager,

Mike Lee, was called in by Gerry Donaldson

to discuss the latest technology available

and specify machines to compliment

White's changing

material and

production

processes, including

Sanders, Edge

Banders, Beam

Saws and CNC

Machining Centres.

The first machine

replaced was a 10

year old DMC Wide

Belt Sander that had

given years of

excellent service,

although it is still

running on various

jobs. As WJ White

apply solid wood

lippings to a chipboard or MDF core, to

ensure a perfect, flat surface before

veneering on a hot platen press, boards are

calibrated. A new DMC Automatic

Calibrating Wide Belt Sander was installed,

a model Mastersand 1350 RR from the SCM

Group.

The DMC has two 320mm diameter

calibrating rollers, the first a helicoidal

grooved steel roller, followed by an 85Sh

roller with 18.5KW 2-speed motors to each

roller for maximum power and stock

removal, with each roller automatically

selected as required. Floating pressure bars

and double grooved rubber pressure rollers

ensure components are easily fed through

the sander. A cleaning unit with rotating

blowers ensures the panels are perfectly

clean as they exit the DMC sander.

Gerry Donaldson continues

"Traditionally, WJ White have supplied only

veneered furniture, but as the market has

changed, we were increasingly being asked

for MFC furniture, not to replace the

veneered furniture, but to compliment it

with different colours and shades. Our old

IDM Edge Bander was not capable of

applying and finishing 2/3mm edge

banding from a roll, and certainly not

capable of corner rounding, so we invested

in a Stefani Solution HD Single-Sided Edge

Bander from the SCM Group.

The Solution HD has a variable feed

speed of 12 - 25metres/min., with an infeed

RT-E 4KW Pre-milling Unit with 2 planing

heads with diamond cutters to provide an

excellent edge to the panel before hot melt

glue is applied, with a rotating magazine

for selecting different types and colours of

glues. Solid wood lippings up to 22mm

wide can be applied. The top pressure

beam, with belts instead of wheels for

maximum traction, has electronic height

positioning.

End Trimming and Top and Bottom Edge

Trimming Units are followed by a C1 + C2

4-motor Corner Rounding Unit to provide

an excellent finish on the corners with

2/3mm PVC applied. Quick release and

changeover of tools is included with an 8-

position revolver for tool storage. Glue

Scraping and Oscillating Buffing Units

follow with a Brightening Unit

guaranteeing a superb finish to all edged

panels.

Another machine recently replaced was

an SCM Beam Saw that had been moved

several times, so the latest Gabbiani Galaxy

3 -110A Saw was ordered

and installed, with a 3200 x

3200mm capacity, as WJ

White only use 8 x 4 and 10

x 4foot boards. Optimised

blade and pressure beam

strokes and electronic

setting of the scoring saw,

plus front air flotation

tables, ensures the Galaxy 3

is very operator friendly,

especially with the easy to

use PC for programming.

Panel optimisation is

included, but little used as Whites

production is generally in small batches

and bespoke to the customer's needs.

Although WJ White already have two

Morbidelli Author 600k CNC Machining

Centres, each with bar and pod tables, it

was necessary with a recent very large

contract obtained to sub-contract out much

of the panel cutting work. But it was felt

that the investment in a flat table Morbidelli

CNC would enable the work to be carried

out in-house, saving costs, and space was

not a problem. The Nesting of panels could

now be carried out, not possible with the 2

existing Morbidellis.

The new Morbidelli Universal 3622, with

SCM's aluminium multi-function work

table, 3660 x 2080mm, and 2 - 250 mc/h

vacuum pumps, Nesting is now a simple

task, with programs fed to the CNC from

the production office. A powerful 12HP

Routing Head running up to 24,000rpm

and a Drilling Unit with 12 vertical and 6

horizontal spindles, plus a saw unit for

cutting and grooving, enables Whites to

carry out all types of routing and drilling,

whether Nesting or on individual panels

received from the Gabbiani Beam Saw.

Gerry Donaldson concludes "Following

our move, we have invested in the factory

on an on-going basis, and we are

continuing this policy, having just installed

the DCS Ecogate energy saving system on

our dust extraction that has dramatically

reduced our energy costs. New interior

design software from IMOS will be

installed soon in our design and production

offices that in turn will program the

Morbidellis through SCM's XILOG

interface, and the Gabbiani Beam Saw,

producing parts lists, cutting lists and

management data."

"Our continued success is due to our

faith in the SCM Group and their range of

quality industrial machinery they offer and

install, with excellent back-up within the

UK and local engineers to assist when

required."

Alan Nuttall Ltd, one of the UK’s

leading shop fitters, based in Dudley,

West Midlands, has returned to

consistent, quality pressing after

recently installing Elkom replacement

heating platens to its existing

hydraulic press.

The new platens were supplied through

Elkom UK, part of CD(UK) Ltd. Eric

Whorne, who manages the company’s

Machinery Division, says: “Management at

Alan Nuttall Ltd recognised that the press

was no longer performing consistently

enough to meet their required standards

and they invited us to put forward a

proposal to replace the existing platens with

the latest Elkom platen system.”

New top and bottom 3100 x 1250mm

electrically-heated platens were custom

made by Elkom, specifically for Nuttall’s

press, and Elkom engineers were able to

carry out installation of the replacement

platens in just one day. The rejuvenated

press now provides Nuttall’s with a flat

smooth platen surface and a consistent

temperature tolerance, which means they

can confidently achieve quality pressing

results on large or small work-pieces.

Elkom, the market leading platen

manufacturer, already supply platens to

many of the world’s leading press

manufacturers and can produce platens to a

size and specification to suit any existing

press. Electric, water or oil heated platens

can be supplied, and their gold anodised

surface makes them wear-resistant, scratch-

resistant and easy to clean.

Mr Whorne adds: “Like Alan Nuttall Ltd,

a growing number of firms are benefiting

from the cost effective solution of

replacement platens. Apart from general

wear and tear, many problems associated

with substandard platen performance can

be a result of uneven loading or, in some

cases, forgotten tooling being left in the

press during closure. Platens can become

distorted, with depressions resulting in

poor pressure distribution over the platen

surface. Temperature variations and cold

spots across the surface area of the platen

can occur which can cause bubbling or

delaminating of veneers and laminates.”

Two areas of growth in the present

climate are the hotel and leisure

sector and the upper market contract

and reproduction furniture.

A strong trend among designers,

architects and manufacturers is for quality

veneered surfaces. Many of these require

thicker surface profiles and it because of

this that lightweight boards have come to

the fore. There are a number of sources of

lightweight boards but only one

international manufacturer who can

combine expertise in lightweight board

construction with superb veneer sourcing

and production.

FINSA is a multi-national Spanish

company with factories in many parts of the

world but it is in north west Spain that they

have a specialist veneer division. FINSA’s

international footprint allows them to

procure the highest quality stock for

producing veneers from every corner of the

globe. Once the logs are peeled the raw

veneers is shipped to FINSA’s matching

department where they’re selected,

matched, stitched and then dispatched to be

meticulously laminated to the selected

substrate board.

The breadth and scope of FINSA’s veneer

sources allow them to offer a wholly

bespoke and customised service to

customers requiring very specific surfaces

and patterns for individual projects.

The other invaluable aspect of the

product that FINSA brings to the table is

the ability to supply the lightweight core

board product which, while being solid, is

manufactured to 400kg/cubic metre

density while having all the performance

and machinability of a conventional board.

It also has excellent screw holding

properties. This is FinLight which is

available in thicknesses from 35mm

through to 60mm. The Iberpan 300 core

and thin MDF surface faces manufactured

in a continuous process is the ideal support

material for a superior final veneered board

product.

Another strong requirement for this type

of product is coming from office furniture

manufacturers as well as the burgeoning

leisure interior sector for hotels, bars,

restaurants and clubs. All of these now

recognise the huge advantage of a beautiful

and superior surface finish for large thick

pieces with a significant decrease in weight.

In the UK FINSA have sales and

distribution headquarters at Birkenhead on

Merseyside from where they service the UK

market and hold stocks of FinLight

veneered boards in both Walnut and Oak in

thicknesses of 50mm.

Contact FINSA UK for information about

their full range of lightweight board products

including their unique GreenPanel hollow

core board and the Iberpan and Fibrapan

low density MDF boards.

Returning for its third year,

Clerkenwell Design Week (22 - 24 May

2012) continues to build on its

inspiring programme of product

launches, talks, debates, exhibitions,

installations, open studios, workshops

and pop up stores…

A core component of this essential design

date is that it takes place in London's unique

enclave of showrooms, representing some of

the world's leading furniture, lighting,

flooring and surfaces brands. The

showrooms set to take part in CDW will,

once again, raise their game with a host of

must-see activities and events.

During the 1990s, architecture, design

and other creative practices flocked to the

comparatively cheap and central workshop

premises of Clerkenwell, reviving the faded

fortunes of the once thriving area of artisans

and craftsmen. The neighbourhood's rich

history and current renaissance makes it the

perfect location for CDW, firmly establishing

EC1 as the nexus of London's design

industry.

The winners of the international TOP

DESIGN contest were announced on 5

March at the Arena Design show, a

forum held in Pozna, Poland, for

presentation of design work in various

branches and fields. Schattdecor was

the sole decor branch company to

receive one of the awards, namely for

design and execution of the digital

print decor 'Paint Splatter'.

The motto of this year's Arena Design

show was sustainable design, a highly

topical theme that was intensely discussed

at the event's lectures and workshops.

Visitors were also able to experience it up

close in an exhibition of products

nominated for the competition finals.

The jury, which was made up of an

interdisciplinary team of noted design

experts, was chaired by the French designer

Francois Azambourg and the well-known

Polish designer Janusz Kaniewski.

As stated in the jury's notes, 'Paint

Splatter' was primarily chosen for

distinction "as it perfectly demonstrates

that an industrial item can have the

character of a unique product. Devised for

use in flooring and taking its inspiration

from an artist's studio, the decor interprets

splatters and streaks of paint on a coarse

paper surface, underscoring the used and

artistic character of the material in

consummate fashion".

Claudia Küchen, Head of Design at

Schattdecor, proudly accepted the trophy.

As the second such award to be gained by

Schattdecor at this event, it underscores yet

again the company's globally-leading

design and trend expertise.

The launch of the new Fresh range by

Kronospan aims to give designers a

market advantage with a collection of

melamine faced panels inspired by the

latest design influences and informed

by sharp commercial sense.

A respect for the past and reinvention of

classic trends influence the decors contained

within Fresh. The new collection takes four

established trends – Bohemian Kitsch,

Industrialism, Visionnaire and Sentiment –

and frames them in modern terms to create

a range that is reassuringly familiar and

effortlessly on-trend.

The new surfaces are given infinite scope

to create stunning interiors when combined

with Kronospan’s new Express Colour

Collection, which features 55 colour surfaces

from muted tones, exuberant primaries and

every shade in between.

Paul Duddle, product development and

marketing manager for Kronospan, says:

“Our decors exist to give designers the

commercial edge. They’re the result of global

trend research, listening to the industry and

attending the leading design shows.

“Designers, manufacturers and customers

– the people that matter - are then invited to

join us at Kronospan’s annual Design

Forum to define the most on-trend concepts

for production. The result is Fresh.”

The decors are influenced by honest and

natural materials to give designers the

freedom to refresh beloved traditional

trends.

For example, the contemporary mix of

Fresh decors Trojan Oak (D6672) and Swiss

Elm Dark (D6597) can update the eclectic

romance of Bohemian Kitsch.

The saw blade texture of Sonoma Oak

(D8197) and Santana Oak (D6602) soften

the raw contrasts of Industrialism.

A combination of Rijeka Oak (D5502) and

the uni-colour Lemon Sorbet (U7123) draw

dramatic lines through the low-key chic of

Visionnaire.

While the deep and timeless appeal of

Sentiment is lovingly reinvigorated by the

natural tones and grains of Swiss Elm

Natural (D5500) and Wyoming Maple

(D5504).

There are boundless opportunities for

introducing a modern twist on our current

craving for goodtime nostalgia. What is

more, each decor has harmonising NCS,

RAL and Pantone matches. Simply visit
