Parents’
Newsletter
Dear Parents and Carers Yet again, we are approaching the end of a very busy and hard year for everyone connected with the school, where
does the time go? Parents, students and staff should be proud of the positive progress we have seen this academic
year and as in previous years, we and external bodies such as Bradford Partnership agree, that we are well on the
way to becoming the good school we should be and that everyone deserves. Being recognised and highly commend-
ed by both the LA for the most improved school as well as Sky Sports in their education awards, is indicative of the
ongoing improvements and successes happening daily here at Parkside.
The ongoing issues of expansion/academisation are also never far away, given the current climate and we will be
keeping everyone up to date as things progress and change. You may be aware that we have been allocated the
funding for the expansion. We are expecting this will be a re-organisation of the school and its infrastructure and not a
major re-build which will help minimise the impact on the immediate community. We have also expressed an opinion
that this is the ideal opportunity for the LA to look at solving the traffic issues surrounding the school, fingers crossed.
More news on these issues will be available in the new academic year and we hope to hold an information evening at
this time – watch this space.
The examination season is now over and we look forward to celebrating the successes of our students with you. We
are hopeful that we will again see some excellent results that are a credit to both staff and students alike. Leavers in
Year 11 and Year 13 marked the end of their examinations and for some, the end of their education at Parkside with
Proms, as usual a fantastic spectacle and thanks go to the staff that made it all possible. The PE department
organised our annual whole school sports day, a great success.
I would like to thank staff members for their work over this year and especially to those who ran the large number of
successful visits and trips, locally, nationally and overseas. These give our students a different type of educational
and learning experience and provide memories which last a lifetime.
The end of the school year sees the departure of some of our staff members as they begin new phases in their lives
and I wish them well and thank them for their commitment to the school and our students. Looking forward to the
future, we will be welcoming a number of new staff in September who are keen and enthusiastic to build on the
positive work undertaken here at Parkside.
Finally, I would also like to thank you the parents and carers for your support of the school and your children and for
the many positive comments you have made as well as those from our partners in Bradford. I look forward with
confidence and would like to wish all our school community an enjoyable and well deserved summer break.

Bradford Schools Games Baton Relay Parkside welcomed the opportunity to take part in the Bradford Schools Games Baton Relay. The baton travelled to 48 schools and is being used to promote and celebrate the 6 values of the School Games which are determination, honesty, respect, passion, self-belief and teamwork. Harden Primary School delivered the baton to us on Tuesday afternoon and on Wednesday morning 12 students from Parkside ran over the moors in a relay and delivered the torch to Oxenhope Primary School. The Parkside students were: Kameron Garnett, Ethan Wilkin, Owen Gallear, Quinn Fisher, Samuel Mahom-et, Fida Hussain, Rebecca Shepherd, Aleigha Barlow, Maisie Wharton, Beth Shaw, Lily Beetham Young and Eva Hogg. Inter-Form Quiz The Parkside Inter Form Quiz was held recently and - 24 forms took part over two weeks to get to the final. Well done to 7B from Hockney House, who beat off competi-tion from 8B, 10B and 10E to become Inter Form Quiz Champions 2016. It was a nail biting finish with 3 teams scoring full marks and 7B becoming overall winners after 3 tie break rounds! The winners received a £10 voucher each and the Parkside Inter Form Quiz Trophy. Pictured are the winners Lois Horne, Effie Brook, Evan Jones and Josh Schofield. All teams in the final were from Hockney House!

Parkside EU Referendum Parkside held its own EU referendum in June. The Student Leadership Team
delivered assemblies to each year group to explain what a
referendum is and why the UK was having one. Two of our
Sixth Form students stated the cases: one for the Remain Cam-
paign and one for the Leave Campaign. Students were given a
ballot paper and asked to vote either Remain, Leave or not sure
when leaving their assembly. All the information given to our
students was im-
partial and ob-
tained from the
BBC website The votes were counted during citizenship
lessons in a formal setting with teams of counters and a
Returning Officer. We wanted our students to see how an
election is run. Staff were also invited to vote. Our election
was a great experience for all our students and helped to
educate them on the process involved in an election, even
though they are not eligible to vote
Parkside Puppy Project
The idea came from our Student Leadership Team
(StLT) and their aim is for the school to sponsor at least
33 puppies, one for each form group. The StLT delivered
assemblies to all our students and Mr Needham
arranged for students to study about guide dogs during
their PHSCE lessons. The idea was to leave a lasting
legacy, with the Parkside Puppy Project continuing for
years to come. When the current Year11 students leave
they will hand over the sponsorship of their puppies to
the new Year7 groups. A non-uniform day was also held
raising £650. Pictured are the Year8 Student Leaders
with Val Sherred, a puppy walker with her 10 month old
German Shepherd Yara and Elizabeth White who is
hearing impaired as well as visually impaired. They
came in for a visit and talked to all our students in a
special assembly.

Perfect Number Day
At the end of June, the Maths Department celebrated Perfect number Day. The maths corridor was decorated, and there were lots of activities running throughout the day including a treasure hunt at break time. All the students work from Perfect Number
Day has been displayed on The Maths corridor. Puzzled as to what a Perfect Number is? Me too! Follow this link to find out, it could blow your mind and your calculator! To infinity and beyond! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfKTD5lvToE
Over 50 Parkside students braved the horrendous snow conditions in March to venture to the Isle of Man for the second school rugby tour. The school took 4 teams across the Irish Sea.
The Year 10 squad kicked off the tour in style with a resounding 55 – 0 victory at Ramsey RUFC. Saturday saw both the Year 9s and a mixed Year 7 & 8 team narrowly miss out to well-drilled Ramsey RUFC squads.
Students took part in a number of outward-bound activities in the afternoon, including archery and rifle shooting, followed by a 2 hour Go Karting challenge where the staff team came out overall winners!
The squad’s final day started with all 4 teams playing in fixtures against the Island’s other club teams. The 7s, 8s and 9s played at the picturesque Fitzwilliam College on the coast at the South of the island. It was only fitting that the Year 10s, who kicked off the tour in style, should finish it in the same fashion. The squad came out fighting against a tough physical “Nomads outfit” with both teams determined to have success and Parkside ran out 10 – 0 winners.
This was a hugely successful tour, with students not only excelling on the pitch but demonstrating a wide range of skills including many leadership opportunities. There were outstanding performances from: Ethan Lawrie, Brooklyn Slack, Nico Mori, Arron Green, Morgan Mirzali, Callum Munro,
Jacob Terry, Gregor Curr, Charlie Alvey, Evan Jones, Alfie Johnson, Arron Thorp, Harry Hollingsworth, Reggie Herd, Josh Slingsby and Ben Ellis. Students organised and ran their own fundraising events and were ably supported by local sponsors, MB Alarms of Cullingworth, Carta Sport and New Yorkees of Keighley along with Keighley RUFC, where a number of the youngsters play.

Following the successful Sky Living for Sport programme the school was nominated by their Athlete Mentor, Paul Broadbent for both UK Sky Living for Sport project of the year and also UK Sky Living for Sport Teacher of the year. The project had a significant impact on the students involved not only in terms of their pro-gress and GCSE ability but also on their attendance and attitude to learning. The combination of both the innovative use of the curriculum and the impact on the pupils secured the school’s nomination from the hundreds of projects that Paul is involved with. Although not winning the overall award, the school was 1 of 12 to have their project highly commended and Maths teacher Dave Russell made the final shortlist for Teacher of the Year added “Although disappointed not to be overall winners, the school is absolutely delighted to have had their work recognised at a national level. The project was only ever about improving the learning experiences for the pupils involved and Dave Russell and I are absolutely delighted we achieved this. Dave is an exceptionally conscientious teacher who, like the staff at Parkside, works tirelessly for the Parkside pupils, it is therefore extremely well deserved and a fantastic recognition of his continual hard work and commitment. The school has already launched their next Sky Living for Sport project; this is based on a similar model and is utilising orienteering to engage and improve the progress of Y7 and Y8 Maths students.

Sport Leaders As part of their Sport Leaders course, Josh Bingham and Paul Mercer visited the Cullingworth Over 60's Club to do some chair aerobics and demonstrate some exercises appropri-ate for the elderly. The boys did a brilliant job! They were fun-ny, caring and sensitive to the needs and limits of the people they were working with. Phil Logan Sixth Form Progress leader

Bradford Literature Festival –
Create a Superhero Competition
We were extremely lucky to have Mike
McKenny run a superhero workshop for
us at Parkside. The work the students
produced was taken to a panel of ex-
perts for judging and five of our students
were shortlisted for the Bradford
Literature Festival Superhero Character
Creation Competition. The students
were: Lewis Risdon, Rosie Bailey, Jamie
Smith, Anthony Nichols, Danyana Driver.
Mike McKenny said that their work
showed great consideration of how their
character's social environment had influ-
enced their powers and their heroic
drive. It stood out as having something a
little more unique and special about it, in a field that was incredibly competitive. They were all amazing
and very difficult to choose. The 5 shortlisted from over 30 is an outstanding achievement. The winner
was Rosie with Danyana a close second. Mike McKenny is the co-author of The Marvel Studios Phe-
nomenon: Inside a Transmedia Universe. Vicky Limbert Head of English

Rock Challenge
On Wednesday 27th April, 25 students
from Parkside School journeyed to
Magna Science and Adventure Centre in
Rotherham to compete in the national
performing arts competition Rock Chal-
lenge. Rock Challenge is a competition
that is held all over the country supported
by the Be Your Best Foundation which
promotes healthy lifestyles. Schools bring
a 7 minute performance based on a
theme and are then marked on a range of
criteria including set, choreography,
concept and soundtrack. We spent all day
at the professional venue rehearsing and
watching other schools rehearse, before
sorting hair and make-up and putting cos-
tumes on, for the evening performance. The Parkside students had a fantastic day and were a credit to
the school, and to top it off we won 3 awards of excellence for the soundtrack, video performance, and
entertainment. Well done to all students involved!

Four students from Year seven were invited to take part in
Salters Festival of Chemistry, a competitive chemistry
competition, at the University of Bradford. The Festivals are
one-day fun events held at universities throughout the UK
and Ireland. Salters' Festivals provide the opportunity for
enthusiastic young students to spend a day in a university
department and to take part in practical chemistry activities which are fun!. During the last 16 years over
44,000 students have experienced the fun of practical chemistry through the Salters' Festivals and
sponsorship in support of the Festivals has been raised from over fifty companies.
The students were tasked with creating a rainbow of colours in a colour chemistry section and also
solving a crime which had happened in the salt cellars. They were finally treated to a chemistry WOW
show which included freezing a banana, spooky smoke, and finishing on a BANG!
Our students where exception-
al in their performance on the
day, really working together
as a team and showing a real
flair for chemistry. It was this
high standard of performance
that lead to Parkside being
crowned the winners of the
competition, beating the other
15 teams who were taking part.
A huge well done to the follow-
ing students for their amazing
achievement: Zaynab Butt,
Bethany Rowell, Paige Mcbride
and Ellie Dimbleby.

The Year 11 Class of 2016 celebrated their Prom on Thursday 7th July at
the Mercure Hotel in Bingley. The event was fantastically well attended by
students and staff, the weather was great and everyone looked
amazing. Needless to say, the atmosphere was also terrific and it was a
great way to mark the end of an era for our students and also some of our
staff.
The Intermediate girls athletic squad finished in 2nd place in the first round of the
English Schools Athletics national competition held at Thornes Park stadium in Wakefield This meant that they qualified for the Regional Final. Despite the monsoon conditions, our girls performed brilliantly to finish in 5th place overall. Congratulations to: Bobby Humphries, Georgia Crabtree, Katie Martin, Louisa Yeates, Chloe Burbidge, Niamh Cater, Natalia Karkoszka, Eleanor Thom-as, Eliza Findlay, Erin Dark, Jessica Dyer and Megan Clayton.
