CONTACTS

The Rector writes...

Easter and Holy Week are two very contrasting times. One is tinged with sadness, the other is full of joy. The sadness of Holy Week and Good Friday in particular is made easier by the fact that we know the outcome and glorious resurrection. As we ponder these times, we realise they reflect the life we live; the good times and the bad times, the happy and the sad.

Things can change very quickly. One minute we are trundling along quite nicely and the next it all goes pear shaped. What makes the Easter story so helpful is the hope it brings, the comfort we can derive from the words in Psalm 23 express this very well:

‘Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou are with me, thy rod and thy staff comfort me.’

I hope that many of you will make the effort to be in Church on Easter Day to celebrate a joyful Eastertide.

Rev Ian Gallagher

Three cream tablecloths have been missing for

almost a year from the Parish Centre. As you

prepare to clear out your closets for the Mayfair

perhaps you could take a look and see if you

inadvertently brought them home to wash and they

never made it back to their home!

No questions asked but their return would be greatly

appreciated as they are expensive to replace.

Thank You.

Stillorgan Players would like to thank all those who supported our production of ‘Blithe

Spirit’ by Noel Coward last month. We hope the audiences enjoyed it as much as we did.

This was a difficult script to learn as Noel Coward liked to play with words in a way that proved to be a challenge to the cast! However, all those taking part put their backs into it (as Madame Arcati would have said!) and a lot of hard work was undertaken. Rehearsals are always demanding but also always good fun and a lot of laughs are had.

In the busy times we live in it is often difficult to promote our productions as much as we would like and for people to find the time to come along, so we really appreciate our audiences and the support we receive.

As a Society we would also like to acknowledge and thank all the Parish organisations who so kindly allow us to use the Hall during the week of the Productions and who postpone their own use of the Hall at this time. Thank you everyone.

Our next production will be in the autumn and details of our next production will be in future Newsletters.

It is 1686 and Amsterdam is at the height of its power. Commerce and trade are flourishing and for many of the merchants wealth is what it is all about. Petronella comes to the city to join her new husband, Johannes, in his home. He is not the least bit interested in her as a wife but presents her with a small replica of their home and she commences to decorate it.

The miniaturist she chooses seems to have second sight as the items come with extra detail almost foretelling events. His sister Marlin helps run his business and also in the house are Cornelia the maid and Otto a freed slave.. The home has little warmth and the occupants all have big secrets which if they came to light would merit death in this Calvinistic society.

Vividly written descriptions of Amsterdam, the canals, great houses, etc give a sense of time and place but an eerie feeling runs through the book. It was hard to believe in the characters but the book was an easy read even if it wasn’t liked by everyone. The Miniaturist is the first novel by Jessie Burton so it will be interesting to see if there is another one to follow

The book for April is John Cleese’s autobiography “So, Anyway”. Meet at The Wishing Well at 11 am on Monday April 13th.

Last month we featured an article on ‘Contact’ - a long

established organisation in our Parish. This month the

spotlight turns to….

The Tuesday Club

10.00—12.00—March to October

For many years, a small group of parishioners have looked after the general

maintenance and renovation of the All Saints’ Church and grounds, usually co-ordinated

by the glebe wardens.

It was around the time of the Millennium Year, when, for example, the clock was

installed in the Church tower and a major tree surgery operation took place, that it was

considered appropriate to have weekly gatherings of vulinteers on a more formal basis

and so the ‘Thursday Club’ came into being.

This outline plan continues today, running from Spring to Autumn and the value if it is

there for all to see. A good sense of camaraderie prevails during the work and a mid-

morning tea or coffee break is an essential element. It should be emphasised that the

Club does not necessarily meet every week but anyone is more than welcome to join up,

even occasionally, to especially, keep the grounds in good order.

Bruce Watchorn.

What does EASTER mean to you?

Eternal Atonement Surrounding The Everlasting Resurrection of Christ.

The guides had their first trip away of 2015 at

the end of February we stayed in Coolnegrenia YMCA in Greystones for a night. The Friday night was spent exploring the hostel grounds and everyone making book marks from felt and some stitching and plating. After supper we headed to our rooms which were the highest quality we have enjoyed for a long time. Everyone actually got a good nights sleep. The next morning we awoke to one of those beautiful sunny days with the sun glistening onto the sea. After a breakfast of French fried toast and sausages we packed up and left the hostel. Our route home was along the coastal pathway back to Bray. This was a busy way on a fine Saturday morning. It proved to be an easy walk with beautiful views. On arriving in Bray had chips and a soft drink and pots of tea in the Martello pub. We were treated very well and enjoyed the fare after our walk even though we had the local starlings begging from us. A quick trip to the playground and then home, just as the clouds were rolling in and the wind picked up. So we were very lucky with the weather. We headed to UCD on Sunday 15th March to cheer Ireland ladies hockey team as they took on Canada. This is part of the world league and the competition winners move closer to gaining a place in the Brazil Olympic Games. It was a great afternoon and the guides met the team afterwards and got lots of autographs. The team complemented the crowd on their vocal support. Back at our Friday meetings we have being taking on some 'home skills' . Jennie Darlington has been running cross stitch sessions for the first half hour of our meetings. The skills of some of the guides is exemplary , while others struggle but keep trying. Helen then ran baking sessions in the kitchen where traditional oat cookies were prepared and baked. We will wait and see what activities the other younger leaders will add to our programme. As the evenings get longer we will move our programme outdoors and hopefully enjoy some warm evenings. Guides will break for Easter after the 20th March as the play is being performed in the hall the next week. We will return on April 17th. Susan

Our meeting in March was held in the Parish Centre in St. Brigid’s. Approximately 30 of us gathered to listen to a talk by Jessica Clarke. Jessica is the Links correspondent for Mothers’ Union and she spoke to us about the wonderful overseas work carried on by the Mothers’ Union. Some interesting facts we heard on the night included India having the most Mothers’ Union members in the world and we heard of one outreach programme which journeyed to a distant branch of Mothers’ Union every year – a journey which took 40 days every time!!!

We were delighted to have Mabel Carroll at our Mothers’ Union meeting the same night and of course her husband Harry as an honorary member. Mabel had celebrated her 90th birthday earlier that same week and we had a cake and candles and a bunch of flowers for her on the night.

Thanks to all our members who took part on the World Day of Prayer service—either by reading or coming along on the night to support us. It was a lovely evening and it was great to catch up with our friends in St. Laurence’s and St. Theresa’s parishes.

Our branch leader Barbara FitzPatrick was unable to attend as she is recovering from surgery. We wished her a speedy recovery and continue to do so.
