St. Brigid’s Parish, Killester Parish Newsletter September 2015 Dear Friends, I hope you all have had a nice break during the Summer even if our own weather left a lot to be desired. The schools are open again and so life for many of you returns to a more regular rou- tine. At Parish level, Fr. Jim’s presence has been a great support and blessing and his departure will be a real loss. During his time with us he set up a meditation group which hopefully will con- tinue, while he pursues his Cistercian vocation. If, as seems likely, I may be the sole priest in Killester, it will become necessary to make some adjustments. The reality is that the Archbishop simply has no other priests at his disposal to appoint to parishes like ours. A changing church lies ahead and I believe that you the parish- ioners, along with those who frequent our Church at St. Brigid’s, will have a vital part to play in determining our future. It is both a challenging yet very exciting time. We must always remember the Lord is risen and with his Church in these new unfolding circumstances. It is also time for me to take stock as I will be 75 in December, and requested in accor- dance with Church law, to offer my resignation to the Archbishop. He in turn, having considered all the circumstances, then decides whether to accept or defer it. On a wider front the Synod of Bishops will be again meeting in Rome this October to re- think, as their Working Document states “with renewed freshness and enthusiasm, what Revela- tion, transmitted in the Church’s faith, tells us about the beauty, the role and the dignity of the family” (n.4). You are probably aware that a group of parishioners responded to our open invita- tion last February to meet in the Pastoral Resource Centre to discuss the many different aspects of marriage today. Our findings were then forwarded to the Office for Evangelisation at Archbishop’s House for consideration along with the responses of many other parishes who did likewise. These reflections will help form part of the Archbishop’s contributions in Rome. So the Synod’s upcoming debates should be hugely interesting for all concerned. Fr. Alex. Eucharistic Adoration Eucharistic Adoration takes place in our Church on each Monday and Wednesday after 10.00 am Mass until 3.00 pm and on Thursday night between 7.00 and 8.00 pm. If you are prepared to ‘Watch for one hour’ with Jesus in the blessed Sacrament you will be very welcome. We also invite everyone to spend some time - even a few minutes in prayer and reflection. Each Thursday night for September we will be praying especially for refugees and migrants and all who are suffering and have to leave their homeland. All Parishioners are welcome. “Merciful like the Father” Pope Francis has planned a Jubilee Year of Mercy beginning on the 8 th of December 2015 and con- cluding on the 20 th of November 2016, the Feast of Christ the King. Announcing this Jubilee the Pope said: The Church is commissioned to announce the Mercy of God, the beating heart of the Gospel, which in its own way must penetrate the heart and mind of every person. We want to live the Jubilee Year in light of the Lord’s words: “Merciful like the Father”. It was Jesus who says “Be merciful as your Father is merciful”. He shows us the steps of the journey we take to attain our goal. These are: (a) “Judge not, and you will not be judged; (b) condemn not and you will not be condemned; (c) forgive, and you will be forgiven; (d) give, and it will be given to you in “good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put in your lap”: (Lk. 6). The Lord asks us above all not to judge and not to condemn. “Be Merciful like the Father” should be our mantra for the coming Holy Year.

Shaping our future Parish

As a Parish we are all so grateful to our many volunteers who assist us in both our Church and Pastoral Centre. Eucharistic ministers, Readers, our Collectors and Cleaners, Gardeners, and members of our Baptismal and Funeral Teams all play an essential role in the upkeep of St. Brigid’s and in the smooth and dignified celebration of our Parish worship. Understandably, after many years of ministry some volunteers, if only from the demands of age are more than entitled to a break or change should they so desire. I am hoping that there are other Parishioners who would be willing to offer their services in assisting in some of these Ministries and so fulfil ever more deeply their Baptismal calling. I am planning to hold meetings shortly with all of these various groups, and if there is a minis-try which appeals to you and with which you might like to be involved, perhaps you would consider attending that particular meeting and then decide on the level of your own involve-ment. Thank you. Fr. Alex

Feasts of Our Lady in September 2015 Tuesday 8th: Birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary: The oldest Marian feasts are commonly agreed to have emerged in the 4th and 5th cen-turies in the Byzantine liturgy. Then in the 7th and 8th centuries they were adopted into our Roman liturgy. Sts. Joachim and Anne are believed to have been the names of Our Lady’s parents. These names are first found in the “Proto-gospel of James”, an ancient apocalyptic writing which contains an account of our Lady’s birth. It is called the Proto-gospel because it narrates events that took place prior to Jesus’ birth. Anne and Joachim were both from the tribe of Judah of the royal house of David. They were childless for many years after their marriage, although both of them prayed that they might be given a child. Finally, an angel ap-peared to each of them, telling them that their prayers had been heard by God and that they would have a child who would be spoken of throughout the world. In gratitude, Anne prom-ised that her child would be given to the service of God. The couple moved to Jerusalem from Galilee and this is where Mary was born and raised. We are told she was sent to the temple to be educated and to serve God. The Church, as we know, celebrates the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Our Lady on the 8th of December. So it is perhaps very under-standable then that when a date for celebrating Our Lady’s birth was sought, it would be nine months later i.e. the 8th of September.

Tuesday 15th: Our Lady of Sorrows: This Feast follows immediately that of the Triumph of the Cross which takes place on the day before. The Church acknowledges our Lady’s essential role in Christ’s earthly life and ministry which for her culminated at the foot of the Cross and her Son’s burial. When presenting Jesus in the Temple as an infant Our Lady was told that a “sword would pierce her own heart”. (Lk.2:35). Other events like the flight into Egypt, Jesus being lost in the Temple, her meeting with Her Son on the way to Calvary, her standing beneath the Cross as her Son gave up his Spirit, and finally, his being taken down and burial, recall Our Lady’s sor-rows. This last scene has inspired touching depictions of Our Lady holding her Son’s body, the most famous being Michelangelo’s “Pieta”.

Recently it has been devastated by the war and its present residency has dropped from 12,000 to 1,000 people due to the ongoing persecution. Twelve religious sisters who resided in an orthodox convent were kid-napped recently and held for some months as prisoners before being released. MARANA THA means “ Come Lord Jesus. MARAN ATHA means the Lord Jesus has come. (Book of revelation chapter 22:20). Newcomers and beginners welcome. Fr. Jim
