A TRYING 2015 has left many Nelson MandelaBay residents apprehensive about the yearahead, but there is hope, according to the city’sBusiness Chamber.

THE Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamberstrongly rejects additional increases in elec-tricity tariffs for 2016.

The Chamber said in a statement on Mon-day, that lobbying on behalf of their memberson issues that affect their sustainability, theBusiness Chamber simply cannot accept theraising of tariffs by nearly 17% by April thisyear, instead of the 8% already agreed upon.Representatives from the Business Cham-

berwill todaypresent their concernsat theNa-tional Energy Regulator of South Africa (Ner-sa)’s public hearing on Eskom’s RegulatoryClearing Account (RCA) application for thethird year multi-year price determination(MYPD3).Eskom has applied for an RCA balance of

R22.8 billion.“Citizens andbusinesses inNelsonMandela

Bay cannot afford increases beyond the origi-nalMYPD3 and, once granted, this applicationwould not be in the interest of an enabling en-vironment for business to be globally competi-tive – particularly in the current economic cli-mate,” the statement read.“Business simply cannot absorb the effects

of this RCA application, which we believe isto recover inefficiencies in maintenance andplanning by Eskom.”

Against the background of a cripplingdrought, national political instability and thedepreciation of theRand, theChamberpropos-es that tariffs must, in fact, be contained andminimised to accommodate businesses, whofind themselves under immense strain, tocounter the economic downturn by stimulat-ing growth and employment in the country.

Electricity tariffs have increasedalmost fivefold since 2001 and as a result business has hadto reduce itsusageof powerand invest inalter-native energy as prices continue to escalate.“This could inevitably lead to further reduc-tion of investment and employment in thecountry.

“The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Cham-ber will continue to be at the forefront of pro-tecting businesses’ interest in relation to un-competitive electricity tariffs, as we did lastyear by lobbying in various public meetingsand behind the scenes for the future sustaina-bility of the city’s economy,” the statementread. – REPORTER

WHILE the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro conti-nues to build its metro police force, a completeplan for this force had already been acceptedby the province nearly four years ago.

This is according to Athol Trollip, DA mayo-ral candidate, who recently visited the familyof Caydene Ruiters (2), who died in gang cross-fire last year.

The plan to which Trollip referred, was ac-cepted in 2012 by Helen Sauls-August, then theMEC for human settlements, safety and liai-son, and published in the Government Gazet-te. It would come into effect on February 11,2012.

However, the current mayor, Danny Jor-daan, requested a “tangible plan” for the me-tro police in October last year, said Trollip.

“This plan should have been submitted bythe end of November, but two months later the-re is still no plan and no officers,” Trollip said.

“It means that our people are still living inunsafe conditions. Crime and gang violence

The process to establish a metro police forceis “already underway,” said Mlungisi Ncame,Jordaan’s spokesperson.

“This process will include an investigationof all decisions regarding the police force, in-cluding the decisions taken by the provinceand the council - with the aim of establishingit as soon as possible,” said Ncame.

aanbeveel nadat sy haar kookkuns by ’n privategeleentheid geproe het.”Dié kok, Vanessa Marx, is kort daarna by Sa-

vages aangestel.

In Kaapstad is daar al jare ’n kultuur

ODETTE KEMP

der toe hy in 2001 in ’n motorongeluk be-trokke was.

As ’n kwadrupleeg was ditegter ’n uitdaging.

Deur Google beland ek toe by Karin DemingIndustrial in Amerika. Hulle vervaardig ’n

‘floating wheelchair’.

Maziena, ’n voormalige rampbestuurspesialis, is in ’n motorongeluk verlam.

SASHIKA PILLAY

PEDDIE-born poet, Thabo Jijana, recentlylaunched his debut collection of poems, titledFailing Maths and My Other Crimes at theNelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum.

The 27-year-old freelance journalist’s an-thology was the first book to have been pub-lished by the uHlanga New Poets series, anew publishing imprint dedicated to pub-lishing South Africa’s most promisingyoung poets.

“FailingMaths is a book of poems that arenarrative-driven, inspired by true life andall of them little studies on a life fully lived.

“On the whole, Failing Maths gatherswork I have produced in the last five to sixyears,” Jijana said.

Jijana was the 2011 recipient of the Antho-ny Sampson Foundation Award. He was alsothe 2014 winner of the Sol Plaatje EuropeanUnion Poetry Award for his poem titledChil-dren Watching Old People. In the same year,he published his first book, Nobody’s Busi-ness, which is a memoir about the death ofhis father during a spate of taxi violence.

“My father, a taxi owner-driver in Peddie, was killed in 2003 in King William’s Townduring a spate of taxi-related violence thataffected both towns.

“On the day he was murdered, violencebroke out at the Market Square taxi rankwhere my father and some of his colleagueswere attending to matters related to how thetwo towns could share routes,” he said.

Jijana has always been passionate aboutwriting but discovered his passion for poetryin high school.

“I became interested in poetry in highschool when I came across a narrative poemby the late South African poet, Mafika Gwala, but I began to really pursue poetry as a voca-

tion at university.”This year he will be studying towards an

MA in Creative Writing at Rhodes Universi-ty and as part of his studies, he will be work-ing on a novel which he hopes to publish inthe near future.Failing Maths and My Other Crimes costs

R140 and can be ordered at various book-stores around South Africa or directly fromuHlanga Press at [email protected]

WOULD you believe? Cricket theoh, so English game whichspawned sons as famous as W GGrace, was in fact invented by –wait for it – the French! As far backas 1748 they were playing it, be-lieve it or not!You ever heard of famous

French players? No? Well, isn’tthat just typically French? But be-fore we lose our way completely –what’s this all about?Okay, it has nothing to do with

the French except the loud-mouthed bellowing of a spectatorat Twickenham,whereABdeVilli-ers’ Proteas were thrashed by sev-en wickets by England, who nowhave the series 2-0 in their pocketwith one still to play. That’s when this loud-mouthed

fan bellowed, “Hey, this isn’t crick-et, chaps!” Even if he’d had toomuch beer, it was strangely rele-vant.It was aimed, it seemed, at the 13

players on the field, but you had towonder whether it wasn’t a cry ofpain at the state the “Gentleman’sGame” has got itself into recentlyover the mess caused by a cricket-ing son of the world’s eastern hem-

ispheremanymiles fromTwicken-ham, a fellow by the name of Gu-lam Bodi to be exact. What a messcricket is in at this moment. It’s areal quagmire. Even politics cantake a backseat as Bodi takes overfrom sports enthusiasts as awhole, the title of “Bad Man of the Mo-ment”; politicians, even their boss, can take a breather.Who is this Bodi character? He’s

Indian originally. He played forthe Proteas, our national team ofcourse, also the Dolphins, Titansand the Lions. He was brought upin a small Indian town in Oujaratprovince . Emigrating to South Af-rica he soon established himselfearly on as a talented cricketer, and soon himself adopted the nick-name of “Boom Boom Bodi”.He’s now been charged by the

Cricket South Africa (CSA) underits anti-corruption code. The termsof the charge allege he contrived tofix or otherwise improperly influ-ence aspects of the T20 tourna-ment. He has been suspended fromall cricket pending his response tothe charges. One of his contacts was allegedly

promised R827 000 for each “job”

Bodi singled out. Bodi is alleged tohave informed this Proteas playerthat the match-fixing organisationwas targeting 2015 RamSlamgames, and in his case the selectedplayer would have to ensure histeam scored less than nine runs ina nominated over.If the approached player was

able to lure another player into thespot-fixing plan, he as the agent, would receive a further R75 000 forhis efforts. Depending on his re-sponse, Bodi could face criminalcharges, which could be punisha-ble by a prison sentence.Observers are saying the out-

come could be more serious thanthe Hansie Cronje scandal, Bodi attimes having allegedly offeredR800 000 a game to tailor perform-ances to achieve a certain out-come.Bodi himself was undoubtedly

talented, with ahighest score of 160in first class matches and a bowl-ing best of 61 wickets.Meanwhile, with Super Rugby

round the corner early games towatch out for are: Feb 26 Cheetahsv Argentina; to be followed on Feb27 by Kings v Sharks, in PE.

AS the year winds up to the start of a newFormula 1 season there are still many issuesto settle before it can get going proper. Most of the teams will be putting the final

touches on their respective cars ahead oftheir not too distant launch date and the cru-cial fist testing sessions. However, some are still lining up a driver

pairing which they hope will strike just theright balance in combination with their me-ticulously built machinery. At the end of this month Pirelli will con-

duct a test at the Paul Ricard circuit. Butdon’t expect to see any 2016 pounding aroundthe circuit as it will be a wet weather per-formance test for the Italian tyre manufac-turer. It means that proper testing for the2016 season has been pushed back threeweeks from when it would normally haverun. The testing is set to commence at Spain’sCircuit de Catalunya on February 22.A second test, still at Catalunya, is sched-

uled to run from March 1 to 4. It leaves theteams with only eight days of proper testingbefore the season starts in Australia.Williams Martini Racing are happy with

the early performance of their car for the 2016FormulaOne seasonwhich is currently inde-velopment.Williams’s head of vehicle performance

Rob Smedley says that the target for the up-

coming season is to “get back to the front,”and that the Williams F1 team are definitelyhitting targets.“The 2016 car we have in the wind tunnel

and the 2015 car are significantly different,so there’s nothing we could do from an aero-dynamic point of view. Other parts of re-search and development and the mechanicaldesign we are trialing all the time,” Smedleysaid.“We think that everything we are seeing at

the minute is good. We’re hitting targets. Weare always looking, not just at numbers, butin other areas aerodynamic development aswell, other significant areas.“Of course, it’s all relative. Williams could

have a stellar development and Ferrari andRed Bull could have an, even more, stellarone.“But everything we are seeing at the min-

ute is good; we are hitting targets. We are al-ways looking not just at headline numbersbut in other areas of aero development, otherimportant areas.Smedleydescribed the 2015 seasonas “lack-

lustre” despite finishing third in the Con-structors’ Championship and said constantdevelopment had been the reason for thestronger showing in 2014.To move up the field in 2016 the Sauber

team is following an aggressive design con-

cept for its new Formula 1 car.“The concept looks very different. We

know the areas we have to improve and wehave to give it a try. We need to try some-thing,” said the team’s Brazilian driver Feli-pe Nasr, who scored three-times the numberof points of team-mate Marcus Ericsson.”Sauber scored 36 points in 2015 and finishedeighth in the constructors’ standings. For others it’s still about securing a drive

in a Formula 1 car.Mercedes F1 reserve driv-erPascalWehrlein is still awaitinghis racingfate. The 21-year-old driver is tipped to join the

Manor F1 team in 2016 thanks to an enginesupply deal between the teamandhis currentMercedes employers. The German drivermade history in 2015 when he became theyoungest ever DTM champion.Mercedes boss Toto Wolff confirmed that

talks are being held with Manor F1 and a po-tential seat for Wehrlein.“He definitely has the ability to be in For-

mula 1, to be one of the very successful ones, but it needs to be the right place for the rightvalue,” Wolff told Autosport. The first pre-season test starts onFebruary

22 at the Circuit de Catalunya in Spain.

MADIBAZ footballer of the year 2015,Cloudius Sagandira, is a rising sports starwho has proved that it is possible to strikea balance between sporting and academicachievement.

The 24-year-old striker, who is this yearin the final year of his master’s degree inchemistry, dreams of both a professionalfootball career and completing his doctor-al studies.“From the age of seven I’ve had a pas-

sion for football and academics,” said Sa-gandira. “I was equally talented in bothand couldn’t separate the two.”The Zimbabwe-born forward was an in-

tegral part of the Madibaz’ successes lastyear, which included winning the SafaNelson Mandela Bay regional league pro-motion championships and defendingtheir Port Elizabeth Football Associationleague title. His standout performances in these and

the Varsity Football competition have al-ready drawn the attention of several pro-fessional clubs.

But Sagandira, who completed his BSchonours degree with distinction is deter-mined to remain focused on his academicstudies and have the best of both worlds.“The sky is not the limit; with great will,

someone can go beyond it,” he said.“No one should limit him or herself.

Never settle for anything, knowing thatthere is always something better ahead.”An example to aspiring young talent,

Sagandira said his greatest role modelwas his father, who taught him to believein himself and inspired him to achieveboth on and off the playing field.“He is the one I look up to, as he believes

in giving the best in everything you do.”He said a sense of responsibility, good

time management skills and a strong per-sonal faith were key factors in his suc-cess.Despite his achievements thus far, Sa-

gandira remains humble and grateful forthe opportunities he has had.“Words cannot express how much this

institution has changed and shaped mylife. Going to study there was probably thebest decision I have ever made. I am whoI am because of NMMU.”
