HOËRSKOOL PEARSON HIGH SCHOOL

ISSUE/UITGAWE: 8/ 2015

To add more history, character and tradition to Pearson and our

Summerstrand campus, we have named certain facilities in

honour of those who have made a major contribution to Pearson.

That is why we held a special assembly on the morning of Friday,

8 May. Our two front rugby fields have always been referred to as

‘The A Field’ and ‘The B Field’, but were officially renamed at this

special ceremony on the main field. The B field was renamed the

‘The Smith Field’ in honour of George Smith, who was a Springbok

rugby player with his first match for South Africa on 10 Septem-

ber 1938 against Britain. At that stage he was the

262nd capped Springbok player. The A field was also

renamed in honour of a past Pearsonite, Mr Hannes

Strydom who attended Pearson from 1979-1983 and

played 1st Team Rugby for 2 years. He played his

first game for South Africa against France on 3 July

1993 and is the 586th capped Springbok. He played

lock in the heroic, victorious 1995 team in the year

that South Africa won the World Cup for the first

time. The main field will in future be referred to as

‘The Strydom’. Mr Strydom and his family members

present were asked to join me for the unveiling of

the Strydom name board and the Head Prefects were asked to unveil the

Smith name board. Dit was ’n besonderse eer vir ons om die volgende

Strydom familielede by dié geleentheid te verwelkom. Susters van mnr.

Strydom, mev. Rika Potgieter en Elize Strydom en susterkinders van mnr.

Strydom, Rigardt Potgieter (2013) en Innes Potgieter ’n huidige graad 11-

leerder. Luzaan Potgieter (2014) kon ongelukkig nie bywoon nie.

Some distinguished guests who attended the ceremony were Mr

Stan Terblanche (1964), Craven Week and E.P. rugby player as well

as E.P. rugby captain and coach, and Andrew Johnson (1976) who

played 128 matches for E.P. - 20 as E.P. captain. The first Pearson

XV match on the Strydom was played on Saturday, 9 May against

Hudson Park. Dié opwindende wedstryd wat 19-18 in Pearson se

guns geëindig het, het by dié wonderlike geleentheid gepas.

Die Strydom het sy eerste wen opgelewer!

POETRY SOCIETY

On 15 May, the Poetry Society held their 2015 Inaugural Open Mic evening. It was a celebration of both

written and sung poetry, with special guests, the Red Hearts (Tania and Bianca) singing “Beneath

you’re beautiful” and Tumi with her rendition of “Soul in mind” by Lira. Vocalists also included

Zimkita who sang John Legend’s “Everybody Knows” and Caitlyn who sang “If I die young” . Poems

were read by Lilo, Zara, Bianca and Lwazi . Highlights included original poems by Adrienne and Lutho.

It was a most enjoyable evening and it is wonderful to see the budding talent displayed by our Pearson

learners.

Dying of thirst, Or sipping society’s insipid secretion… Our only options while on our peregrination Quest for greatness, love and prosperity Instead of ecstasy we’re met with bigotry. In a world where 1 cannot prosper without knowing Where corruption fuels our political system, Can there be any good left in me or you? Or have we become just collectable trophies in society’s museum. Pearson’s Open Mic Performers

Perhaps, we have become those whom the ground will open up on. If not, are we just exploring the opulent lifestyle while we seek asylum. When did life get so complex? When did the public defender become the transgressor? Could this have been when we became so fixated on tones, ethnic groups and complexion? Or when barbarity started to supersede our morals.
